About the Maskew Miller Longman Literature Awards Launched in 2006, the Maskew Miller Longman Literature Awards competition is currently the only literature award that gives equal weighting to all official South African languages. Aimed at further developing literature for youth in all 11 official languages, the competition also acts as a platform to encourage and provide exposure for aspiring writers who wish to produce literary works in the language of their choice. Previous winners of the Maskew Miller Longman Literature Awards include Conny Lubisi and Mafori Charles Mphahlele, who went on to win 2008 M-Net Awards for their novels and another winner, H. R. Tshianane, won an honourable mention in the 2008 M-Net Awards. This year we are proud to announce the 2010 Children’s Story Award winners and finalists. Judges awarded 8 prizes in 5 language categories and 2 prizes in the illustration category. The Maskew Miller Longman Literature Awards is an annual event with a different genre explored each year. This year we called on writers of novels to send us their original and unpublished novels for youth. These winners will be announced in the middle of 2011. To assist new and emerging writers with submitting quality entries each year, Maskew Miller Longman hosts writers’ workshops at the beginning of the year to provide writers with guidance in the relevant genre. These workshops are held across the country and are facilitated by an expert in the relevant genre. Maskew Miller Longman is committed to developing quality literature in all South African official languages.
