ED’S NOTE
Money Matters... Whilst shopping with my kids recently, I realised how difficult it is for me to say no to their requests for things they want. Even if I do say no on the day, those requests purposefully make their way onto birthday lists, Christmas lists, good results lists, rewards for doing your chores lists, etc. I know I shouldn’t spoil them too much and they need to work for things they want, but they are wonderful children and I do so like to give them things that I couldn’t have. I often remember going shopping with my parents and, being one of four children with only one parent working meant I definitely couldn’t get everything I wanted. But I somehow stopped requesting and became mindful of my circumstances. I am thankful that my children don’t throw tantrums when we do say no, and as they’ve grown their requests have also become more mindful. I do believe that this cycle continues in every lifetime – all parents always want to give their children more than they had when growing up, as we constantly aspire for better lifestyles. So, in this issue of Milestones we have decided to give you a helping hand when it comes to making the best financial decisions for your family. It all starts with planning for your “Maternity Money” on page 32, “A Money Plan for Your Child’s Education and Future” on page 45, and then some great tips on how to entertain your kids with crafts on a budget (page 64), as well as how to survive not overspending when the kids join you for grocery shopping (page 72). As parents, beside the financial anxieties, we often have many other anxieties too. Getting back to school or starting school for the first time after spending so much time together during weekends and holidays can be all too daunting for both you and your child. So if you are still struggling with separation anxiety, do take some tips for Dr Laura Markham on page 9, where you can master her 12-step programme to help you manage your own emotions too. And then – you will definitely be smiling from ear to ear – and you will realise how unnecessary all the anxieties are when you read Shawn Theunissen’s story (page 68) on life with his three little girls. You will learn to accept that all the tears, the tantrums and the giggles are what we live for as parents, ensuring that each of our children has a strong foundation to grow up into strong, well-balanced individuals. Happy Parenting!

Share Your Stories! Regulating baby
Our little guy arrived on 19 October 2016 by natural birth – 19 hours of labour, with 20 minutes of that being active labour! Best experience in our lives! We are so in love with our little guy; he’s everything and more than we expected. As this is our first child and I have to be alone with him quite often, Milestones has been a lifesaver. I always read the articles and go back and check certain ones when I’m unsure about something. The article about keeping baby cool and safe this summer saved me! My poor little guy gets so irritated with the heat and, being a first-time mom, I’m so paranoid about keeping his temperature on point and dressing him warmly, and not allowing too much sun or too much cool air. I doubt almost everything that I do because I have no idea if it’s okay and will keep baby happy. And of course nobody wants to harm their little pumpkin, but being so unsure and new to it all can lead to making silly mistakes. I now feel more confident. When he gets uncomfortable, I just give him a lukewarm bath to cool him down and soothe his heat rash. He absolutely loves it – who would have thought?! I now also leave the fan on to regulate the room temperature, making sure it’s off before we go for a nap. And I’ve been dressing him in lighter, cooler clothing. Since then he’s been a lot more relaxed and generally happier. The article really was such a huge help. Thank you, Milestones, we can now enjoy summer with our two-month-old boy knowing that we aren’t doing it wrong! Samantha Leigh Snyders Cape Town
Mike and the new mom
My husband was watching the rugby while I read my latest issue of Milestones. I became hysterical with laughter and I’m sure my husband thought the pregnancy had really affected my brain (FYI, my most embarrassing moment has been forgetting to put mielies into a mielie bread). What had me in giggles was your article “Preparing the Nest For Baby’s Arrival”. That same day I was driving my husband crazy in the shop while buying things for baby.

I’m currently in my last trimester and definitely in the nesting phase. The night before, we’d had our year-end function for work, so he was nursing a pretty nasty hangover. As we stay in the Kruger Park, town can be far, but his hangover did not hinder my plans. After some time I noticed his exhaustion from taking the larger items down from the higher shelves for me, and placing them back again, as the colour or shape was wrong. This is why I was in giggles with the article: it seems my husband was experiencing the same problems as “Mike” from the article. Happy to hear I am not the only one making my other half crazy. Happy nesting everyone! Elskemea Stoltz Hazyview, Nelspruit
Experienced mom, new knowledge
I am expecting my second child and I am due on 6 December 2016. Even though this is my second child I am reading up more about pregnancy and childbirth, and the first few months of baby’s life, than I did before, as I didn’t have resources and tools like I do now. I am very happy with Milestones magazine as it is very helpful and also contains very interesting and informative articles for an expectant parent. Juanita Arries Blue Downs, Cape Town

How do you keep your child entertained on a budget?
Angelique Bruwer We bake cookies (with ingredients in the cupboard). We make our own playdough. We play shop-shop with toys. We take turns doing puppet shows with teddies. We fill water in a bucket and learn about full, half and empty with different containers. We build mud houses. We skip rope. We watch movies. We build forts in the lounge and bedroom and play pirates in the forts. We make fruit faces. We paint. We watch Barney. We learn animal sounds with animal toys and play with Lego and we blow bubbles with non-toxic soap food colouring and a straw on paper. Jennifer Cuyler Cohen We bake, make our own bubble mix, take early morning trips to the beach and collect shells. The kids make up a bakery and bake us stuff out of playdough. They love painting, walks with made-up maps with which they have to find items outside, etc... . The list goes on. Our kids love being at home! Leanne Zwiegers We go to the beach and build sand castles. Friday nights are movie nights with a huge bed on the floor and toasted sandwiches. Cold days are art days... : we buy a big role of inexpensive news print paper and draw road -treasure- or fantasy maps to play on. Athraa Voterson Hendricks The park is a great way to keep your kids entertained while on a budge. It is even more fun if you bring along their bikes or tricycles. Tasneem Cassim Maganlal I attended the Clicks Baby Bootcamp not too long ago and I learnt how to create some cheap home-made rattles. My favourite is using an old porridge packet and filling it with macaroni. It makes a great sound and my little one loves it. Also putting beans in an old toilet roll holder and sealing the ends makes a great rattle. Elaine van Huyssteen We bake, paint, draw or play outside. Zeenah Rahim Gardening DIY projects. Tarryn Tunnell We love painting, playdough, swimming and picnicking. Jade Kimberly Cupido-Cheemee Here are just a few things I do on a budget: bubbles/play outdoors, put out the pool, do some arts and crafts, bake cookies, and take the kids to the park or to the beach.
