Matt’s Media Tips 5-14 Last week I shared with you five of my favorite free summer resources. And, as I mentioned before, that was just the tip of the iceberg. Well my friends, have I got a treat for you! My colleague (and personal hero) Lance Rougeux (Twitter handle @lrougeux) has created a phenomenal resource for you to use this summer. He has created a 62 page, 40-day enrichment packet for grades 5-6. Wow! It is pretty special. I will link to it each week but you definitely should check it out. Lance posted it on the DEN Blog. Here is a link to his summer packet. And since today is Monday - check out his idea for Mindson Monday section. This week’s Tips - Who Knew We Had News? This week I would like to share a few hidden gems within Discovery Education that I think you’ll really enjoy. Each of these items is centered around a type of news. As you may know already, Discovery Education is part of Discovery Communications (you know the Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, Science Channel, TLC, Investigation Discovery, and 23 other network brands). And since our content is aired on more than 100 channels in more than 180 countries in 39 languages, there is a lot of content that is globally created and shared. Discovery Education gets to hand-pick the best stuff, create curriculum resources around it, and then provide it to you to use in your classroom. But again, you probably already knew about that. Here’s what I’m betting you didn’t know. You actually have access to an additional set of video resources from Discovery News. Yep! This rich dynamic content that is available to anyone who logs into www.discoveryeducation.com. Every day we provide a video feed from Discovery News about news...Discovery style. That means you have access to even more great content about solar storms, marine life, museums, historical figures and more.

So how do I access all of that great stuff Matt? Fear not my friends, here are the four simple steps. 1. Log into www.discoveryeducation.com

2. Click on the Personalize Page link in the upper right-hand section of your MY DE section. 3. Check the box next to Discovery News Videos 4. Click on the blue Done button.

By following these steps you will have turned on your Discovery News feed. Your news feed box will appear somewhere in your MY DE section. You can further customize this page by dragging your Discovery News feed box to a different location on this page. I like news feed right next to my Upcoming Webinars box. News from Discovery Education Primary Sources Another great news series available to oneand-all is the Video Yearbook Collection. The Video Yearbook Collection is a video almanac that runs from 1929-2005. In addition to all of those videos, there are companion quizzes that run from 1931-1962. I love this series. It highlights news and events with primary source footage over the course of 66 years. Some of my favorite primary source footage include, “Video Yearbook Collection 1929: Radio Soothes Crying Babies, and Video Yearbook Collection Radio Soothes Crying Babies. Prod. Fast forward 80+ years and students are using them to announce their own morning news shows. And that is pretty darn cool! To find this great resource, type “Video Yearbook Collection” into your Discovery Education search bar. Then choose any year. Remember that you can click on the “More in this Series” tab to see a clickable list of the entire series.
Webinars - Our Own Great News. I make sure to highlight the upcoming webinars on the next page but, truth be told, why wait until Monday’s to see all of the great sessions we’re doing? And we’re doing webinars almost every day of every week. Our webinars come in all sorts of flavors. We have a Discovery Live series where we deliver unique up-close-and-personal experiences for students and teachers, no matter where they are in the country. Recently we’ve broadcasted from the NYSE floor, White House, and even with the Mythbusters. At each of these events students and teachers can interact and ask questions from the Discovery Education team on site. We also deliver integration sessions, sneak peeks, and more for educators who are interested in learning how to incorporate media into their instruction. Discovery Education Webinar Schedule Recently I got to see another one of my personal heroes and App Gurus speak about ipad apps. One of the free apps that he showcased was called Roadshow.
