History & Reflections

Baby Weight Scales

By Graeme Meade Now and again it is interesting to go back in time and recall some of the history of Mount Morgan. This edition we will return to the movie theatres that once gave us all so much pleasure, especially on a Saturday night when you would have to reserve your favourite seat.

Pride in your Town

The beginning of movies in Mount Morgan apparently started by the Hall Brothers in early 1900. They screened the movies in the School of Arts untill 1922. It was a marathon to get gas power to get the engine This is something that some of the readers going. Of course the School of Arts was burnt down on 25th April have used, but may not be aware of. Then in 1917 Birch measurements; pounds and ounces. The and Carroll built the airdome theatre where IGA now stands. In 1923 imperial measure was not used in Australia both theatres were taken over by Birch Carroll and Coyle – a very from the late 1980s, but I think baby weights famous company in the movie world. Because of the paint job it makes you had to scatter round to East Street theatre. Kids, being kids, then it almost impossible to find a makers name or dashed upstairs and not into the bottom section. It was the done mark and stops it from becoming a museum thing. Seating in the airdome at ground level was very uncomfortable piece. The base is cast iron; the tray is made in long wooden forms while in the raised area deep canvas seating from steel so it is quite heavy. The original was chosen but it was quite difficult to get out of by older folk. Mount Morgan’s first General Hospital was built in 1890, at a cost of 3000 pounds. That building was added on to over the years, and it served the town and district until 1968. It was replaced with a new building at a cost of $540,000.

Of course over many years all technology improved, and films were not split in two reels when time had to be allowed for rewinding etc. After John Kelly the theatre was taken over by Basil Wood and family in 1953 to 1959. We had many cowboy films in that period as Basil was a fan of those movies. The last owners of the Olympia were the Schinkel and Hickey families until it was burnt down in 1976. The Olympia had seen many changes over the years from concerts, music The present hospital facility opened in October 2011. evenings and plays performed within its walls. With no movie theatre in the town Richy and Gwen Bills had “a make do” theatre at the old skating rink in James Street. Then Mount Morgan Limited converted the Club House (now the Arts and Craft Building) into a small theatre around 1978, with the seats coming from the Wintergarden theatre in Rockhampton. Finally, Larry Fox opened the Touchwood theatre in James Street. All theatres are now closed. Mount Morgan certainly experienced the progress of film making, bigger screens, better acting and better productions. With the introduction of black & white television in September 1963, cinema hit the beginning of its demise. It was a wonderful era and most of us still enjoy a good movie. Think Clean - Be Tidy

99th YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF ARMISTICE DAY 11/11/1918 - 11/11/2017

Lest We Forget

Dallas & Nikki Olzard

Keith Hare & Mike Johnston

There are only a few days every year when you can hear a pin drop. No people chattering away to themselves, no excessive noise just silence, and the sound of a bugle. It is instinctive to Australian’s to stop, take their hat off and stand quietly for one minute when they hear the last post playing. This time it was for the 11th day of November 2017. Remembrance Day is a significant part of the year. On 11/11 at 11am 1918, the guns on the western front fell silent. Ninety-nine years later on the anniversary of Armistice, the soldiers who fought and died in the war are still commemorated at ceremonies across the nation. Mount Morgan’s ceremony may not have attracted the largest numbers, however that does not mean it is any less significant to the people who attend. Anzac Park echoed with the haunting and moving sounds of the Last Post. The residents lined up to lay their wreaths and red poppies, and to pay their respects to those who had given their lives for our freedom. The Last Post is one of the bugle calls in military tradition that marks the phases of the day. Reveille signals the start of the day and the Last Post signals the end. Mike Johnston led the Mount Morgan ceremony and the address. Clergy address and prayers were presented by Lay Minister Keith Hare. The 5th Light Horse Brigade Mount Morgan, proudly stood around the Cenotaph which was adorned with blood red poppies. During the first world war, red poppies were among the first plants to spring up in the devastated battlefields of Northern Belgium and France. The poppy soon became widely accepted throughout the allied nations as the flower of remembrance, to be worn on days such as Armistice Day. After WWII the name Armistice was changed to Remembrance Day to commemorate the fallen who suffered for Australia’s cause in all wars and armed conflicts.

News from the Dee Bowls Club Inc.

Thank you Mount Morgan and surrounding townships for reading this small passage on where OUR Club is at now. Our Club is now under ‘new’ management, with one or two old stayers and quite a few newbies, who give the Dee new ideas and possibly a new direction. Our Club is totally volunteer driven, with no one receiving an allowance for the time and effort given, which is truly ‘volunteer’. OUR Club has predominately Social members, who are a friendly and fun loving bunch that support OUR Club on Friday evenings from 4:00pm and on Sunday afternoons from 3:00pm, as not many of us like being burnt from the sun rays. OUR Club wants to become YOUR Club, and thus we are looking for new members to both join with us in some fun and laughter, or simply to use OUR Club as YOURS with parties and farewells, or as a neighbourhood centre to share local information or to hold association meetings in a safe and affordable environment. OUR Club’s Management Team consists now of: President - Michael Willis; Treasurer - Richard (Dick) Needham; Green’s Manager - Stephen Smith; Secretary - Kevin Fox; and most importantly the meeter and greeter as Club Bar Manager - Robyn George, who is ably assisted in training by Isaac Fox. OUR Club has many others doing their bit to keep the Dee happening, such as Tony Pascoe; Judy Sanderson; and Andrew Cope, however as we said OUR Club is really YOURS, so come and join in with us. YOUR Club has a relaxing outlook, a cool breeze to enjoy, a sausage sizzle after each game with friends, with a nice cold drink to soothe YOUR pallette. So PLEASE come and join with us in making OUR Club YOUR Club. Contact numbers at the Dee Bowls Club have changed for: * Bookings of the Club’s ammenities please phone Robyn George on 0487180073 * General information please contact Kevin Fox (or Foxy) on 0429616365; and

Carbine Gold Copper Project Update and Community Meeting Carbine Resources Ltd would like to invite interested people in the Mount Morgan district to an information session for an update on the company’s proposed Mount Morgan Gold-Copper Project. The information session will be held at the Mount Morgan School of Arts building on Tuesday evening November 28th from 7:00pm to 8:00pm. In conjunction with the information session, Carbine will sponsor a sausage sizzle run by Mount Morgan Rotary from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. In December 2016, Carbine completed a Feasibility Study that demonstrated the viability of reprocessing former mine tailing to recover gold, copper and pyrite. Since then, Carbine has progressed project permitting along with final engineering studies and design work. Carbine’s Environmental Authority amendment application and project financing are yet to be completed. The community information session will be an opportunity for Carbine to explain the work completed to date and the nature of the future planned operation. Carbine’s Managing Director Tony James will give a presentation and there will be opportunity for questions after the presentation. Carbine, working in conjunction with the Department of Natural Resources and Mines Abandoned Mine Land Unit, believe Carbine’s Project will make substantial contributions to improving historical environmental impacts from former mining as well as creating potential business and employment opportunities for the community.

Red Frog Early Learning Centre gets back to basics Malachi and Jessie Conway from Rocky Instincts visited the children and educators of Red Frog 4 Early Childhood Education recently with an age-appropriate, ‘YESTERDAY’S SKILLS SURVIVING TODAY’ WORKSHOP. An interesting morning was had learning about basic survival by using the natural resources found in the bush. Primitive skills such as friction fire making, how to find bush rope, animal trapping techniques, creating tools from stone… We can recommend Rocky Instincts workshops!

The Orange Dot Movie Review

By Larry at Fox Video

In Memoriam LYLE CURTIS 18-11-1997 Remembering our beloved Dad, who passed away suddenly 20 years ago, aged 39. Kimberley, Brendan and Ryann.

News From Dee River Oldies

September saw us losing two of our older members, Agnes Hoehne and Madeline Reinecker, and as result it was a quiet month. In October, we held our usual meeting on the 17th and our street stall on the 19th. The winner of our popular meat tray raffle was Joel Dickfos. A superb action thriller, brilliantly written by David Guggenheim and played by an amazing cast including Keifer Sutherland, Virginia Madsen, Kal (Kumar) Penn, Maggie Q and Natasha McElhone et.al. The American Broadcasting Co (The ABC) were so sure about “DESIGNATED SURVIVOR” that the project skipped the pilot stage and was ordered straight to full season production. Whenever the USA Government gathers at a major event like The State of the Union address in the Capitol Building, it is their practice to select a “DESIGNATED SURVIVOR” and have him or her protected at a distant, secure location in case of a catastrophic natural disaster, or an attack on the Government for example. On the night of the State of the Union a massive explosion in the US Capitol claims the lives of the President and everyone in the line of succession as well as most of the Judiciary. THE DESIGNATED SURVIVOR, Tom Kirkman, a low-level cabinet member and Secretary of Housing and Urban Development is sworn in immediately as President of the United States, unaware that the attack is just the beginning... There’s more to come. In this dramatic action thriller, Kirkman must lead the dangerous search to find out who is responsible for the attack while trying to rebuild his government and navigate the highly volatile political arena that is Washington. At the same time he must prevent his family as well as the entire country from falling apart... It’s enough to turn a bloke grey overnight. DESIGNATED SURVIVOR straps you into your seat from the very start, then begins the roller coaster of action, intrigue, human relations and global settings. It is rated MA15+ for “strong themes and violence”, and that’s about right. DESIGNATED SURVIVOR... Simply brilliant! Loved it!

As this was our last street stall, we would like to thank our cooks and everyone who supported us throughout the year. On Wednesday November 1st we had Lindy from Dance Health Alliance in Rockhampton attend our Morning Tea to give a demonstration and to see if we were interested in the program. The feedback was very positive, so may see Lindy back next year. The winner of the Breakfast Tray was Margaret Hoehne and Claire Page won the Lucky Door prize. Our Christmas Lunch Breakup for members only will be held in the School of Arts on Friday, December 1st 2017. Our Next Meeting: November 21st Mount Morgan Historical Museum held its AGM on Tuesday 7th November 2017 at the QCWA Hall in East St. The Committee stood down and the following Officers were elected: President is Roberta Bolton, Vice President is Bruce Rogers, Secretary is Robyn Marshall, Treasurer is Gwen Scott, Committee Members Stewart Crump and Dianne Herbener, CoOrdinator of the Museum is Gwen Scott. Our Chairperson was Mr Brian Farley who congratulated the new committee and welcomed them into their positions. The Mount Morgan Historical Museum will be closed between 20th December and 2nd of January for the Christmas break and will reopen at 10am on 3rd January 2018 .

Local history preservation rings true in CBD upgrade

11.

A special piece of Mount Morgan’s history will be showcased in the future upgraded CBD, with the latest works including the relocating of the well-known Mafeking Bell. The bell has this week been removed from its former location outside of the local Scout Hut and polished. It will soon stand in a prominent position of the town’s new-look main street, in the centre area of the traffic island strip. Paying special tribute to its early life and ties, the bell and its structure will be fitted above a large Scout emblem, embedded into a section of the CBD’s pavement. Local history tells that the bell was cast at the Mount Morgan Mine in the year 1900, in celebration of the relief of Mafeking - a siege that took place during the Boer War involving a number of local soldiers. The release was under the command of Lord Baden-Powell who later founded the Boy Scout movement. What else is coming as part of the CBD upgrade: The relocation of the Bell follows a number of other works, including: •All earth works – complete •Underground works – complete •Installation of street art structures – underway •Upgrade of toilet facility – underway •Shelters and gazebos – underway, to be completed by the end of this week Fast facts about the Mafeking Bell: • It was cast in 1900 to commemorate the relief of Mafeking during the Boar War and was originally erected in a tower at the front of the Mount Morgan Council Chambers • The Bell weighs 560kgs, stands 956mm high and is 610mm at the mouth • Tradition has it that the bell was cast from pennies by local school children • The gong is believed to have been made from melted watch cases • The Bell was at one time used as a fire alarm for the town • In 1962 it was presented to the local Boy Scouts of Mount Morgan to tie its special history Andrew Richard Curtis “Panda” 5-1-1973 - 21-11-2008 To us you were so special, what more is there to say? Mount Morgan Pioneers in Pictures

15.

by Catherine McIntosh

descendant of the colonial Stubbs family of Mount Morgan

‘Mount Morgan was the source of a very large portion of his fortune and few watched its development with more interest than he did ... Mr. Hall made a large number of handsome donations to Mount Morgan. He was always very liberal in matters of education and sport ... His personal liking for the [gold mining] company’s staff was marked by many a dinner and many a merry evening’ (Morning Bulletin, 14 October 1911).
