DALEY FIX FOR MOUNT MORGAN Mount Morgan residents received their Troy Cassar-Daley fix on Sunday night in the final Legend and the Locals Tour performance. Troy was supported by wellknown regional performer, Brad Butcher and locals Denvah and Lynette Anstey. The Legend and the Locals concept is organised by Hey There Happiness in conjunction

with organisations. The concept is based around the Legend, in this case, Troy Cassar-Daley mentoring locals in songwriting and performing. Troy was backed by a choir consisting of residents from Mount Morgan, Bouldercombe and Gracemere. As the only place in the Rockhampton Regional Council

region to host this leg of the tour it was pleasing to see locals from across the region participate. Former Mount Morgan resident, Amanda Sealey was chosen to perform Stand By Me in a duet with Troy. Amanda and Gavin Finch also participated in a songwriting workshop with Troy. Continued on Page 2

Daley Fix... From Page 1 Both Gavin and Amanda had an opportunity to show Troy some of their work and have a “jam” session with Troy, after which he spent time rehearsing with the choir. Mount Morgan was the only leg of the tour where Troy performed an encore. “I was really impressed with the response from the Mount Morgan audience, it was great,” he said. Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc (organisers of the Mount Morgan event) would like to thank Hey There Happiness for including Mount Morgan in the tour, Rockhampton Regional Council and the Regional Arts Development Fund for funding towards the event, Lynnette Anstey for her work with the choir, members - Rosemary Izzard, Del Rowley, Dianne Coburn, Kevin, Audrey and Kym Crawford, Evelyn Rogers and John Steinberger for their hard work and volunteers Cass and Aaron Donald, Sharon Bell, Rose Munez and Kraig Hixon for their valued assistance.

Above: Gavin Finch and Amanda Sealey learn receive sound advice on their music and following their dream to become musicians.

A special thanks to the choir for their dedication over 16 weeks, pictured above and below rehearsing with Troy and conductor Luke McIntosh (Hey There Happiness).

Welfare Bowls Club Sunday, 18 August Mount Morgan Welfare Bowls Club hosted its Annual Presidents Day for club President Wally Edwards. Perfect weather was enjoyed by the players who came from clubs in the Central Queensland District. Two games were played, with a break for a delicious lunch prepared by the ladies. One of the visitors was ex ‘Morganite’ and past President of Welfare Bowls Club, Alan Hansen. Alan is now in his 90’s and has just purchased a new set of Bowls and is going very well. Winners on the day were Diggers Memorial Bowls Club, from Rockhampton. Runners up were Moura Bowls Club, and Rockhampton Bowls Club took home the Sportsman Prize. Our Bowling times are Tuesdays, 1pm start and Sundays 9.30am start. New members are always welcome, and we are situated in town, at 28 Thompsons Avenue. Phone 4938 1131.

ACTIVITY HERALDS OPENING

MANDOLINS PRESENTED TO TROY

OF MORGAN STREET GALLERY There has been lots of activity at 77-79 Morgan Street lately, as the premises are being prepared for our very own Art Gallery. Opening on the evening of Friday, 30 August, there will be entertainment, drinks and nibbles, while patrons can witness the unveiling of the aptly named EMERGE Exhibition. With locals and regional artists all represented, the Mount Morgan No7 Gallery aspires to provide an inspirational gathering place, where all can enjoy workshops, where artists can display and sell their work, and where people can draw inspiration in a collaborative and fun way. Mount Morgan No7 Gallery can also provide a platform where artists can hone their skills and share techniques. Open Day will be Saturday 31 August, where there will be free activities such as rock painting and lantern making. All are welcome. A roster of upcoming workshops will be in the next Argus, and any information will be displayed in the gallery window. Opening hours will be Thursday and Friday 10 am – 5 pm, Saturday 10 am - 3 pm and Sunday 10 am – 2 pm.

Above: While in Mount Morgan, former 4YOU presenter Nell Carter presented Troy with two Mandolins which belonged to her husband, Ned Carter. Both Mandolins were painted with indigenous artwork on the back.

Please come along and support Mount Morgan No 7 Gallery, we will be seeking members and volunteers, and looking for ongoing artist contributions to keep a continuously evolving display. After school workshops will be held every Friday at 3.30 pm from 21 September, and we are looking at bringing back the Rockhampton Regional Gallery supported Craftanoons’ Printing Workshops and Sculpting Sundays. Also down the track will be community projects. If you have any ideas, or would like to keep up to date, please follow or contact us on the Gallery’s Facebook page, or call 0411 865 621 with your query.

THE ORANGE DOT By Larry at Fox Video

Movie Review LONG SHOT Seth Rogen was just a fluffy little Canadian kid when at the age of 13 he delivered his first standup comedy performance. In that same year he and Evan Goldberg (Seth’s lifetime writing partner. They still work together today, twenty-six years later.) wrote SUPERBAD, and they spent the rest of their highschool years polishing the script. Unlike many in the industry who do their best work early in their careers and then just gradually fade away, Seth, since that very first pimply performance, has been continually growing his talents and skillset, constantly improving - getting better and better. He received his first award in 2000 for Best Young Artist in a TV Series for FREAKS & GEEKS, and has since garnered (to our knowledge) another thirtysix awards for acting, comedy performances and writing (with a couple thrown in for charity work and “Stoner of the Year” for PINEAPPLE EXPRESS).

not so much). He has moved beyond the loud, raucous acting and pratfalls for cheap laughs to now being a fine actor - more quiet and subtle, with most of the laughs coming from good writing and excellent delivery (okay...And a few pratfalls.) In LONG SHOT Charlotte Field (beautiful, smart and funny Charlize Theron) is one of the most powerful and influential women in the world. Clever, sophisticated and accomplished, she’s a powerhouse diplomat with a talent for - well, almost everything. Charlotte is Secretary of State. Fred Flarsky (our boy Seth) is a gifted, free-spirited journalist with a self-destructive, even if highly principled streak. The two have absolutely nothing in common... Except that she was the kind, gorgeous, slightly older girl next door and baby-sitter to his pubescent, hormonally-charged childhood self, and she was his first and biggest-ever crush!

When Fred unexpectedly reunites with Charlotte he charms her with Seth has matured wonderfully. his self-deprecating humour and Gone is the Yuk-Yuk Guffaw that memories of her youthful idealism. some of his fans loved (others

As she prepares to make a run for The Presidency, Charlotte impulsively hires Fred as her speechwriter, much to the dismay and horror of her trusted advisors. A fish out of water on Charlotte’s elite team, Fred is completely unprepared for her glamorous and high-stakes lifestyle. However, sparks fly as their unmistakable chemistry fires up and leads to a series of dangerous and outlandish escapades. Look for genius turns from Andy Serkis (Golum/Smeagal from LORD OF THE RINGS and Caesar from PLANET OF THE APES) as a Murdochesque villain, and Alexander Skarsgard as a Trudeau-esque rival. LONG SHOT runs for two hours and is rated M for “coarse language, sex and drug use”. LONG SHOT... Loved it!

Pride in Your Town Recently we read these words and thought them so interesting and maybe provoking. We wish to share them with you. Hope you are as amazed and surprised as we were…….here goes. If you could fit the entire population of the world into a village consisting of 100 people maintaining the proportions of the people living on earth that village would consist of 57 Asians, 21 Europeans, 14 Americans and eight Africans. These would be 52 women 48 men. They would be ….30 Caucasians and 70 non Caucasians 30 Christians and 70 non-Christians 89 heterosexual and 11 homosexual. Six people would possess 59% of the wealth and they would all come from the USA. Out of our village of 100 - 80 would live in poverty, 70 would be illiterate, 50 suffer from hunger and nutrition, one dying, one would be being born, one own a computer and 1 (yes, only one) would have a university degree. If we looked in the world in this way the need for acceptance and understanding would be obvious. But consider again the following! If you woke up this morning in

good health, you have more luck than 1 million people, who won’t live through the week. If you have never experienced the horror of war, the solitude of prison, the pain of torture, were not close to death from starvation then you are better off than 500 million people. If you can go to your place of worship without fear that someone will assault or kill you, then you are luckier than three billion people. If you have a full fridge, clothes on your back, a roof over your head, and a place to sleep you are wealthier than 75% of the world population. If you have money in the bank or in your wallet, a few coins in your purse, you are one of the eight privileged few amongst the 100 people in the world. If your parents are still alive and married, you are a rare individual. If you read this message you are extremely lucky because you do not comprise one of the two billion people who cannot read…….and so WORK like you need a purpose in your day. LOVE like nobody has ever hurt you.

DANCE like no one is watching. SING like nobody is listening. LIVE as if this is paradise on Earth. Recently, I received the most delightful letter from an old friend aged 82, parts of which I wish to share with you. She had seen on Facebook the RRC video shown at the River Festival. She said it brought back the fondest memories she holds. As a young child playing outdoors with all the kids in the neighborhood; to her schooling at the Mount Morgan High; then her happy years at MML. The friends she made there and the excellent training received enabled her to obtain high secretarial positions in Brisbane. She even named the three members of the Fred Cole Trio and the enjoyment and fun of the Past Pupils Association. She finished her letter by saying,” You can take the girl out of the Mount, but not the Mount out of the Girl”. How good I felt reading her

letter and I just hope many have the same wonderful memories of the Mount, like my friend and I.

GUESS THE MOUNT MORGAN IDENTITY This little cutie was born and educated in Mount Morgan and represented Mount Morgan for running in Brisbane. Sadly this person is no longer with us, but she played an important role in Mount Morgan. This lady worked with Miles Parson, who was a chemist in Mount Morgan. She married in 1960 and had three children - two boys and a girl. If you are the first person to guess who this Mount Morgan identity is, you win a $10 IGA voucher. There will be more clues provided in the next issue of the Mount Morgan Argus. To be eligible to win, you must not be related to the identity and you must email mmpad@bigpond.com or phone the answer through on 07 4938 2312. If you have a baby photo of someone who has contributed to the Mount Morgan community, send it to mmpad@bigpond.com. If you do not have access to a scanner, we can scan the image for you. 28 August - 11 September 2019
