Toy Singer Sewing Machine

Pride in your Town Having seen the freshly painted stage area and the attractive additions to our School of Arts one must hope that the floor will be restored to a polished dance floor again. If this does not happen the area will look like a man in a wonderful dinner suit wearing unpolished shoes. Remembering the dances, balls etc. held in the School of Arts brings back fond memories of the Fred Cole Trio.

This Trio played such a wonderful part for yesteryears dance lovers.

Mount Morgan had many talented musicians who gave of their talent for the enjoyment of many, but now we will concentrate on the Trio.

The Trio consisted of talented male members, Fred Cole being the pianist, Harry Weir on drums and Noel Underwood, saxophone and clarinet.

Fred Cole needs no introduction to Mount Morgan people as he was also very well known for his tennis skill. Fred was a gifted pianist with no formal knowledge of music but could play any tune from his wonderful memory store. His gift is one that only a few receive.

The wonderful part of Fred and his piano playing was that his love of music enabled him to sit at his piano for hours and hours enjoying every minute of playing melody after melody and never tire of playing.

Harry Weir, drummer, needs very little introduction as many thousands of children who attended the Central State School enjoyed his talent during their school years.

Harry taught at that school for many many years. at many local concerts.

Harry was also a very talented violinist, organist and choirmaster.

Noel Underwood, saxophonist, needs a little more introduction. He joined Mount Morgan Limited as a draughtsman from New Zealand in 1949.His musical knowledge started in a Boys band playing sax, trumpet and euphonium. Very soon after his arrival to Mount Morgan the Fred Cole Trio was formed and continued till 1957 when Noel left to accept a position with Mineral Deposit Limited at Southport.

He had a successful career of 34 years with Mineral Deposits, including many interesting overseas trips for that company. Close to retirement he again resumed his love of music and joined a Concert band playing various instruments but at present in his senior years he is playing trombone in a Swing Band (which he helped to get started) playing the music of Glen Millar, Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman etc.

With Christmas not far away this week’s little story is about a Christmas present that was popular with little girls in the 1900s. A toy sewing machine that actually works, I have read many stories of mother and daughter sitting side by side at the table, making clothes, one for the family, one for the dolls.

It is a Singer Hand Crank Toy Sewing Machine; the machine was made from about 1910 to the 1950s with almost no change to the basic design. It was made for a time in the 1970s as well. The machine came in a cardboard box with an instruction sheet, seam guide and attachment clamp. It is a simple design, turn the handle and it produces a simple chain stitch. This machine was originally called a Model 20, after the 50s it was called a Sewhandy. It is heavy for its size, about 1.2 kg, made very solid; it stands about 18 cm tall, 18 cm long and 9 cm What interesting talented musicians wide. made up the Fred Cole Trio?

Graduation!!

Dee River Oldies On Sunday November 20th we had a bus trip to Emu Park Markets, although the numbers were down, everyone who came, enjoyed the day.

Instead of attending the Country Music Concert, the members requested going to Yeppoon to shop around before returning home.

The winner of the bus raffle was Carolyn Read.

Congratulations Samantha Jayne Lamb for graduating grade 12. Samantha attended Rockhampton High School.

John Cani News On Monday 28th November Carinity Aged Care Unit - John Cani Mount Morgan was pleasantly surprised to receive a cheque for $500 from the Grand Hotel’s Cutter Social Club. Manager Margaret Eater and DT Leeann Rolfe were delighted to accept the donation from Kathy Griffiths treasurer of the Club. “This is wonderful, we’ll be able to purchase paint supplies for our activities for the residents.” Diversional Therapist Leeann Rolfe said. Cutter Club President is Judy Crane and Treasurer is Peter Gerber.

We held our Christmas Lunch Breakup Friday, November 26th. in the School of Arts Luckily the weather wasn’t quite as hot as the day before.

70 people enjoyed a delicious lunch provided by Golden Roast and some lovely Christmas carols by Fab Four.

The lucky winners of the raffle were Barbara Thompson a Christmas cake first prize, second, Val Young, a Money Tree and third Gordon Fritz a Christmas cake.

We would like to say a big thank you to Betty Ware for her donations of the Christmas cake and the Lucky Door Prize, as she has been through a trying time of late.

Also thanks must go to Mary Valler for her donation of the Money Tree and Val Young for donating the Christmas cake. These donations and the help we get from our members make everything worthwhile.

The Lucky Door winners were Freda McDougall and Merle Curtis.

As this will be our last newsletter for the 2016, we would like to wish everyone all good things for 2017.

Nursery Now Open

On Saturday the 26th of November, the gates to Golden Mount Nursery were re-opened at a new premises.

The scorching heat stayed away for the opening which made for a pleasant browsing experience for customers.

Many residents came out to see the family who started it all 16 years ago. Back them the nursery was up at the dam recreational area.

After a 6 year hiatus from shop front trading, the Hare family decided it was time to open the gates once more to the residents of Mount Morgan.

“Over the next couple of months we will be able to step up our propergation. We are just waiting fon the weather to change so the cuttings will be able to root better. Stock will be changing and increasing weekly.”

The nursery is now situated in 98B James street which is directly behind touchwood theatre. Drop on in and witness the nursery grow back to what it once was.

“Thank you to everyone who arrived to see our new premises. It was good to see some old and even new faces in our nursery once again”

An Exciting New Opportunity for One Special Girl Rotary have been happy to partner with Mount Morgan Central State School (MMCSS) and to share this good news with the media. Australian Hearing Audiologist, Katherine Huntley came to the presentation and shared what the benefits of the FM system will be.

Amanda is happy to speak on behalf of Jasmyne to thank all those involved.

The FM system will be stored at school and will be available for Jasmyne every school day.

Rotary have worked with the school and

Australian Hearing and have funded an FM sound system and 2 receivers for Jasmyne (well over $2000 donation).

This product will be highly beneficial to use at school to enhance Jasmyne’s opportunity to engage with the curriculum and learn. Jasmyne’s mum, Amanda, is having Jasmyne fitted with the FM sound system and 2 receivers on 28 November at Australian Hearing.

Amanda Marsh, Jasmyne’s mother, expressed her joy and gratitude towards rotary at the official ceremony. “ With Jazzy’s Central Auditory Processing Disorder, she hears things s little different to the rest of us and this can make the way she processes info quite difficult.”

Council welcomes $2m Funds for three key projects

Council updates Mount Morgan Residents

Minister for Justice Michael Keenan and Queensland Assistant Minister for Local Government and Infrastructure Glenn Butcher today announced Natural Disaster Resilience Program funding of $1.77m for upgrades to Stanwell - Waroula Road and Nine Mile Road. Mr Butcher also announced $348,000 funding for the Mount Morgan Streetscape Redevelopment project.

Rockhampton Regional Council Acting Mayor Cherie Rutherford thanked Rockhampton MP Bill Byrne and his Mirani counterpart Jim Pearce for helping to secure the support.

Cr Rutherford said the projects would all help take the Region forward in their own way.

She said the Mount Morgan Streetscape Redevelopment would reinvigorate the historic town’s main street and create an opportunity to entice more visitors.

“This money will be used for the first piece of a transformative project that will upgrade the existing Morgan St median and streetscape to create a vibrant area for all the community to utilise,” Cr Rutherford said. “It will entice tourists passing through to stay and visit local businesses.”

“Importantly, the project reinforces the town’s identity, ‘heritage’ tourism products and strengthens existing local businesses in the town to support the creation of additional local jobs and business offerings.” She said this project, which has been the focus of extensive community consultation, was recently recognised at the Planning Institute of Australia’s Awards for Planning Excellence in Queensland, where it received a Commendation by the judges in the category of “Best Planning Ideas – Small Project”.

Approximately 30 receptive people attended the RRC Community Conversation meeting on Thursday 10th November at 7pm at the Mount Morgan Schools of Arts following a scrumptious sausage sizzle courtesy of Rockhampton Regional Council.

The meeting was attended by Mayor Strelow, Deputy Mayor Rutherford, CEO, General Managers and Council Officials and was facilitated by Wade Clark.

Several topics were discussed at the meeting including the Mount Morgan Streetscape, the new lookout at the Mount Morgan Range and revamped “Welcome to Mount Morgan” Signage at the entranceto the town.

Acting Mayor Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the recent Community Conversations meeting in Mount Morgan gave residents the chance to talk with local Councillors and Council Officers on current projects in their local area.

Our Community Conversation meetings are always a great opportunity for residents to come down, see what’s going on in the area and ask us questions they feel are important and relevant to them,” Cr Rutherford said.

“I was really pleased with the positive contribution from residents on the night as well as their comments through our online survey and Facebook.”

Councillor Rutherford said Council Officers presented several major projects set to roll out in Mount Morgan.

“We took residents through the revised Mount Morgan Streetscape plan, which the community was quite involved in, and it was well received. We also presented the new signage plans for the Region including Mount Morgan,” Cr Rutherford said.

“We welcomed MMPAD representative John Steinberger who spoke about his group’s regular fish stocking of the Mount Morgan No.7 Dam, which will be very helpful with the Region’s Recreational Fishing Development Strategy.”

Carbine Gold Copper Project Update and Community Meeting.

Carbine Resources Ltd would like to invite interested people in Mount Morgan to an information session about the company’s proposed Mount Morgan Gold-Copper Project.

The information session will be held at the Mount Morgan School of Arts building on Wednesday evening December 14th from 7:00pm to 8:00pm. In conjunction with the information session, Rotary will run a fund raising sausage sizzle from 6:00pm until 7:00pm.

Carbine is in the process of finalising a Feasibility Study that may underpin proposed financing possibilities to enable the project to be developed. The community information session will be an opportunity for Carbine to explain the work completed to date and the nature of the planned operation moving forward.

Carbine’s Managing Director Tony James will give a presentation and there will be opportunity for questions after the presentation. Carbine, working in conjunction with the Department of Natural Resources and Mines Abandoned Mine Land Unit, believe Carbine’s Project will make substantial contributions to improving historical environmental impacts from former mining as well as creating potential business and employment opportunities for the community. MULTI PURPOSE HEALTH SERVICE NEWS Christmas Closure: The hospital office will be open on Wednesday 28th December, Thursday 29th December and Friday 30th December and will then re-open as normal on Tuesday 3rd January. Our Emergency Department will be available 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week for emergencies only. Outpatient clinics will not be held during the Christmas / New Year period, except for essential wound care clinics.

Dental Clinic: The Dental Clinic will hold their final clinic for 2016 on Wednesday 21st December and will re-open on Tuesday 3rd January, 2017. Rockhampton Dental Clinic will close from 24th December to 2nd January (inclusive) and will also re-open on Tuesday 3rd January. For emergency dental appointments during this break please phone the Emergency Department at Rockhampton Hospital.

Travel Office: The Rockhampton Hospital Travel Office will be closed from COB (close of business) Friday 23rd December to Monday 2nd January. For emergent patient travel enquiries during this period please contact the switch at Rockhampton Hospital.

Immunisation: Please note our final immunisation clinic for 2016 will be held on Tuesday 20th December.

The Relationships Australia Community Hub is facilitating a FREE Craft Group over the holidays for children of all ages.

Come along, enjoy some light refreshments, make some Christmas decorations and have a chat in the air con!

The first session commences on Tuesday the 13th of November 2016. The group runs through the school holidays but takes a break over Christmas and New Year’s.
