The future of Agricultural Shows around Australia is guaranteed with many young competitors taking up the challenge and competing across a range of events.
This was evident at the Mount Morgan Show held on Saturday at the Mount Morgan Showgrounds.
Young Jace Lamb (Front Page) from “Parraweena” near Banana competed in a couple of events at the show, not least of which was the Under 13 Junior Judge for Cattle.
“It was so good to see the Juniors entering in the horse, cattle and poultry and bird events as well as the pavilion classes,” Heather Barker, Mount Morgan Show Society President said.
“It is really important for the future of shows for young people to become involved,” she said.
More than 1500 people attended the Mount Morgan Show, which is on par with previous years.
“It was a very enjoyable day and was certainly a great social success.
“This wouldn’t have been possible without the many sponsors, the exhibitors and the community,” she said.
Rain threatened throughout the day, but it held off until many of the events were completed.
Cattle numbers were down on 2023’s numbers, due to exhibitors choosing to take their cattle to Ekka, but were still well represented. However, horse numbers and competitors were up on previous years.
Below are the Champion and Grand Champion Results for Cattle and Horse events. Bird and Poultry events will be in the next edition of the Argus.
The George and Annie Bills Memorial Trophy for Supreme Champion Led Pony of the Show - Lynda McMaster on Kintyre Shilleagh, the Irene and John McDougall Memorial Trophy for the Champion Pony Hack - Chelsea Smyles on Winter Rose, the Elenor Shield Memorial Trophy for the Supreme Led Exhibit of the Show - Lynda McMaster on Kintyre Shilleagh (above top), the John and Ivy Hempseed Memorial Trophy for Supreme Champion Hack of the ShowCherie Purkis on Keeobarki Lethal Dulce, the George Sealy Memorial Trophy for Champion Thoroughbred of the Show - Tahlia Mortimer on Poet’s Girl, the Mount Morgan Light Horse Troop Memorial Trophy for the Rider with the Most Potential - Rosa Bonham (middle), Grand Champion Female of the Show (cattle) - 2AM Relana - N BAA Vegemite - Lamb Family, Grand Champion Male of Show (cattle) - Can Valley the Big Bang - Lamb Family and Supreme Cattle Exhibt of Show - Can Valley - the Big BangLamb Family.

MIRANI MP TO CONTINUE REPRESENTATION DESPITE
Stephen Andrew, the State Member for Mirani has confirmed he is leaving One Nation and won’t be standing as a One Nation candidate at the upcoming Queensland State Election.
Mr Andrew has held the seat of Mirani since 2017.
He is the first Australian South Sea Islander elected to the Queensland Parliament and the only sitting One Nation member of a lower house in the country.
Mr Andrew confirmed he had received a letter from One Nation’s Pauline Hanson earlier this week, while he was attending Budget Estimates Sessions in Parliament.
Mr Andrew said the One Nation leader had advised him she had decided not to endorse him again as the One Nation candidate in the electorate of Mirani.
According to Mr Andrew, the decision was not expected and had been made without any consultation or ‘right of reply’, less than 100 days out from the Election.
While expressing disappointment with the decision, the MP acknowledged he had never enjoyed a particularly close relationship with either Pauline or her second in command, James Ashby and that he had not seen or spoken with Pauline in 11 months.
“To be honest, I’ve been so busy this year with my State based work, that I’ve barely had a chance to speak with my own family, let alone Party leaders”.
“It’s disappointing, of course, but what can you do.
GLENMORE CABIN TOURS ON OFFER FOR MOUNT MORGAN WATTLE DAY
The Glenmore Signal Cabin once controlled train movements at the junction from the North Coast line to and from the Emu Park/Yeppoon branch.
The Glenmore Junction signal cabin ceased to be used as part of the Queensland Rail [QR] infrastructure in the 1990’s and was relocated from Glenmore in Rockhampton to Mount Morgan not long after this, having been a part of the rail system for well over 60 years. The cabin was repainted in 2019 when the Mount Morgan Railway Station building was painted and had an internal makeover a couple of years later followed by further minor works. It is now ready for tours. Special guided tours of the Glenmore Junction Signal Cabin will be included in admission to the Railway Museum on Mount Morgan Wattle Day.
I’m hardly the first member to be let go by One Nation and I certainly won’t be the last”.
The MP said he was particularly disappointed he wouldn’t be able to continue his work in helping all the new One Nation candidates standing for seats in his region at the next election.
“They are all a great bunch of people and I wish them all the best”.
Mr Andrew said he would be talking with friends and family over the weekend, but had made no concrete decision yet on what his plans were.
“For now, my focus is on doing the job I was elected to do, which is to represent the people of Mirani to the best of my ability, and holding government to account”.
Specific times to view the cabin will be advertised on the day. We envisage this section of The Rail Museum viewing will be undertaken by guides to assist access for the group to and from the cabin.
The highlight of the cabin tour will be a personal presentation delivered by guest speaker Sid Powell (pictured left), former QR signalman who worked for many decades at the Glenmore Cabin.
A few years ago, Sid donated the panel which he purchased from QR years before to the Mount Morgan Rail Museum. Sid has also donated a range of memorabilia which will also be displayed in the signal cabin.
Mr Steinberger, Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc [MMPAD] President also former QR employee said he was excited to have the Cabin tours included in the Rail Museum for the day.
“What we will deliver is a comprehensive presentation of the history and workings of the cabin. To have Signalman Sid to come up and volunteer his time to share his knowledge is a fantastic treat.
“This will allow us to take the journey provided by Sid to relive the historic cabin’s life and share his experiences,” Mr Steinberger.
These tours will only be held on Wattle Day for now, but with more development, future tours will be made available.
Drone work stacks up for lightning protection test
The Department of Resources is using innovative drone technology to help protect the historic chimney stacks at the Mount Morgan mine site.
The department’s Technical Services area recently employed Expert Energy to test the chimney stacks lightning protection systems, and they engaged Queensland Aerial to use two drones to simulate lightning strikes on the stacks.
The drones flew a steel cable up to the two lightning rods on each of the stacks, having to maintain contact for at least three seconds to test the lightning rods were successfully deflecting electrical current to earth.
A department spokesperson said the test was to ensure the department was protecting the chimneys as best as possible from potential lightning strikes.
“Being the tallest structures on the surrounding mine site means the chimneys are at risk of being struck by lightning and this has happened in the past,” the spokesperson said.
“Within the first few years of the Main Stack being built in 1905, it was struck by lightning and the scar remains on the stack today.
“Looking after the chimneys is important to the mine site as the Main Stack is a real focal point for the
township and many images of Mount Morgan contain the image of the Main Stack.”
It was also a first for Queensland Aerial, and they did a number of practice runs on the ground using a stainless steel bowl to simulate the cap of the lightning rod before completing the successful tests at height.
Using two drones in the exercise had the added benefit of gaining video and photos of the innovative work as well as some fantastic aerial photographs of the historic site itself.

RIDE 4 LIVES TO VISIT MOUNT MORGAN IN 2024
The annual Ride4Lives Suicide Awareness ride will again take place this year on 7 September 2024.
The ride which has been visiting Mount Morgan for the past few years, will stop at the Mount Morgan Railway Museum again for morning tea.
Organiser, Mark Brookes said the response to date was not as strong as it was last year.
“We had about 300 riders last year - most of which registered in the last few days - so there is still a chance for the number to be equalled,” he
said.
He said this year the ride would be open for push bike riders as well. Organisers have included a 52 km, 26 km and 22 km section of the Boyne-Burnett Rail Trail for the cyclists to participate.
“The Rail Trail ride is new to the event this year. We are trying to encourage family members to participate and the section of rail trail chose is perhaps the easiest section,” Mr Brookes said.
There are also opportunities for motorcyclists as well four wheel drives. Riders and drivers will either ride 250 or 350 km depending on which route they take.
The ride finishes in Ubobo with an evening of entertainment and guest speaker, Mary O’Brien from “Are you bogged mate?”
An update will be provided in the next edition of the Mount Morgan Argus.

Aliza has not allowed her vision loss to prevent her enjoying performing with her friend Leyton, who is a masterful guitarist and cover-artist. Aliza’s folk-style music is heartfelt and reflects themes of love, nature and healing. Both Aliza and guitarist Leyton will perform live in the morning at the festival

“MMPAD has been organising this Wattle Day annual event since 2012. We owe our success each year to all the volunteers who contribute many tireless hours of effort to bring this event to fruition.
“Some seating will be available near the stage area and adjacent tables and seats for viewing from under the magnificent fig trees. This will add a shady, cool delight to our festival. Bring a fold up chair or picnic rug to spread on the ground.
“Wattle Day is a wonderful way in which Central Queensland residents can celebrate Wattle Day and Mount Morgan’s very own wattle the Mount Morgan Silver Wattle
This is a great opportunity for the whole community to come together. Everyone is welcome to join in.
“Most of everything at the event is free including admission into the festival.
“Of course, items at stalls, Devonshire Teas and light refreshments will need to be purchased.
“Entry fees into our great Railway Museum and platform area also apply.
Mr Steinberger said a value-added experience was available with guided tours of the historic Glenmore Junction Signal Cabin, undertaken during the day.. This will be included with the admission to the Rail Museum.
“We’ve been very fortunate to have the support of some very good artists as well as the Golden Mount Nursery,” he said.

The LNP Candidate for Mirani, Glen Kelly and I had a wonderful time in Mount Morgan on 19 July.
We started off the day at Mount Morgan’s No.7 Dam which reached over 90 percent of full storage capacity earlier this year.
Did you know Mount Morgan No.7 Dam (otherwise known as the Big Dam) was one of seven dams that were built by the Mount Morgan Mine in its early establishment? The No.7 Dam was dug out in the early 1900s for water supply for the processing of the mine.
Next on the list was a visit to the ‘Mount Morgan CBD – Links to its Historic Past project’, with John (President of the Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc).
I was proud to support this project with $12,000 in funding from the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Programme.
The ‘Mount Morgan CBD – Links to its Historic Past’ project was installed late last year and can be accessed through five QR posts. It is a self-guided tour through the main business area of the town.
We were pleased to next catch up with the Rotary Club of Mount Morgan and hear what they've been up to in the community.
The club was awarded $1,900 through the Federal Government's Volunteer Grants for eskies, urn and kitchen supplies.
They also received $1,500 for a payment terminal under the Federal Government's Stronger Communities Programme.
Thank you to the Wattle Bee Next Mount Morgan for hosting us and for the lovely cup of coffee.
Our next trip was to the Mount Morgan Arthur Timms Lookout.
Thank you to everyone who stopped by including Keith who had several energy questions which I was happy to answer.
We finished off the day at the Mount Morgan Soldier’s Room which is looking better and better every time I visit.
The organisation received $6,500 under Batch 2 of the 2023-24 Saluting Their Service Commemorative Grants Program for renovations and upgrade works.
I look forward to my next visit to Mount Morgan!
