Boulder Creek Wind Farm receives planning consent - Rockhampton region set to benefit from $750M renewable energy project Queensland’s renewable energy pipeline has received a major boost with the Queensland Government’s approval of the Boulder Creek Wind Farm. Located in the Central Queensland Renewable Energy Zone, the $750M project will be the first wind farm of its scale for the Rockhampton region and is expected to create up to 350 jobs during construction and 15-20 ongoing jobs during operation. Paul Stangroom, Development Director for Epuron, the company behind the proposal, said it will be a significant project for the region. “It is an exciting step that the Boulder Creek Wind Farm has been granted approval by the Queensland Government,” he said. “This project will be a great opportunity for the Rockhampton region to benefit from Australia’s clean energy transition.” The project straddles Rockhampton Regional Council and Banana Shire Council local government areas and involves up to 60 wind turbines. Once operational it is expected to generate up to 372 megawatts of clean electricity, enough to power about 215,000 homes, and contribute to the state government’s target of 50 per cent renewable energy generation by 2030. “The Boulder Creek Wind Farm site is ideal for wind energy generation. It has an excellent wind resource and is close to the existing transmission network,” said Mr Stangroom. “Central Queensland is blessed with natural resources, so it is well placed to continue as an energy generation hub into the future.”

The application is yet to be approved under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and once that has been achieved the project will start preparing for construction. Construction is expected to begin towards the end of 2022 and take 18-24 months, with the wind farm to be fully operational by 2025. Epuron will host community information sessions for the project in the nearby towns of Westwood and Mount Morgan in December. More information is available at bouldercreekwindfarm.com.au.

TURNING DREAMS INTO REALITY

on the management of Fern’s Miners’ Rest units and house and increasing accommodation availability at Meyenburg Units by turning three rooms and a sleepout into Bed and Breakfast rooms. Normally, the house attached to the Fern’s Miners’ rest is used for accommodation for the manager/ owner, but as Lizzy doesn’t require the house for accommodation, she decided to turn in it into guest accommodation. “It didn’t make sense to leave it vacant,” she said. She is managing the units on behalf of John and Marcie Farrell for the time being. Lizzy has also made camp sites available at Meyenburg and Golden Mount Rest. Not including the camp sites, Lizzy can accommodate up to 66 guests.

Everyone has dreams. Whether these dreams are about being famous or about being wealthy. It matters not what the dreams are, but what you do to achieve your dreams. Some people sit back and wait for their dreams to come to them, while others continuously seek to make sure their dreams are turned into reality. Elizabeth “Lizzy” Hope is one of these people. In 2020, the Argus ran a story about up and coming real estate entrepreneur, Lizzy. Since that story ran, Lizzy has expanded plans to “improving her wealth through real estate investment” by taking

The house attached to Fern’s is also beingw used for accommodation. Whether there’s a family, couple or single person looking for somewhere to stay, there’s a great chance that accommodation can be found at Fern’s, Meyenburg or Golden Mount Rest. Along with the extra accommodation comes the extra work. She still works at the Leichhardt Hotel, while also managing her properties. In May, Lizzy’s parents turned up for a two-month visit and this took the pressure off a little, especially when, as a result of lockdowns in southern states, the two months, turned into five months. “I can’t wait until their next visit,” she said. “It was really great having them here and they were wonderful with giving me a hand,” she said. Lizzy’s dream is alive and well and it’s a dream that she works hard to ensure it doesn’t fail.

Project Update

November 2021

Project granted planning consent

Boulder Creek Wind Farm is located in the Central Queensland Renewable Energy Zone, one of three areas in the state identified by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) as optimal for new renewable energy projects to support Australia’s clean energy transition. AEMO forecasts Australia will need 26-50 Gigawatts of new grid-scale renewables over the next 20 years, with most expected to come from wind and solar.

• Up to 60 wind turbines • Up to 350 jobs during construction and 15-20 ongoing jobs. • Construction period of approximately 18-24 months, estimated to start end of 2022.

• Up to 372 megawatts – enough to power about 215,000 homes.

10 - 24 November 2021

The Queensland Government has given its consent for the Boulder Creek Wind Farm project, approximately 40km south-west of Rockhampton, between Mount Morgan and Westwood. Located in the Central Queensland Renewable Energy Zone, the wind farm will be the first of its scale in the Rockhampton region and a significant opportunity for the area to take advantage of Australia’s clean energy transition. Epuron is finalising work for the proposal’s assessment under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). Once it has been approved by the Australian Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment the project can prepare for construction. Construction is expected to begin towards the end of 2022, create up to 350 jobs and take up to 24 months. It is estimated the wind farm will also require 15-20 ongoing jobs for operation. Once operational the wind farm is expected to generate up to 372 megawatts of clean electricity, supporting the state’s renewable energy target of 50% renewable energy generation by 2030.

Community information sessions Information sessions will be held in Westwood and Mount Morgan in December to give interested members of the community an opportunity to learn more about the final proposal and discuss it with members of the project team. MOUNT MORGAN Mount Morgan No7 Gallery – Final Weeks! CITIZEN’S CLUB A Big Thank You Over the past few months, a local Artist by the name of Roslyn Bennets has embarked, and now completed an ingenious fundraiser to support the Soldiers Rooms Hall. Running her own studio in Morgan Street, she has engaged 50 local identities by painting their portrait, and auctioning off each one, with the majority of the proceeds donated to the Mount Morgan Citizens Club. Roslyn is an unassuming individual, and declined an opportunity for a photo op, but the Club wanted to officially acknowledge her amazing contribution, and thank her sincerely for her absolute generosity, and we hope she has a place on the shelf for a little something coming her way. Cent Sale Our next Cent Sale with be after our General Meeting, at 12 pm on Sunday, 28 November. Things are ramping up for Christmas, so is a great time to win some prizes! Refreshments available. Please call 0411 865 621 for any donations to be collected, and we hope you can all come along! Membership New Members are always welcome to join the Mount Morgan Citizens Club. What do we do? We are not a social club as such, but mainly come together to ensure that the Soldiers Rooms Hall is taken care of maintenance wise, financial obligations are met, governance is running smoothly, and for the occasional fundraiser, to ensure the Hall remains in community hands. Many clubs utilize the hall for regular meetings and events, as well as locals who celebrate many important occasions such as wedding receptions and parties, as well as on the sad occasion, funeral services. The Soldiers Rooms is entrenched deeply in Mount Morgans history, and we want to keep that ongoing, as well as bring the building back to it’s former glory. If you feel you have something to offer, or want to get involved somehow please contact us. Sponsorship is welcomed, as are corporate donations. To join the Mount Morgan Citizens Club Inc @ The Soldiers Rooms, forms can be collected/ returned to the Mount Morgan Post Office, or via email at mountmorgansoldiersrooms@gmail.com. Mount Morgan No7 Gallery will be closing its doors on 17 December! After two years and three months, MMNo7 will no longer occupy the space in Morgan Street, due to rising costs, and a need to focus on other projects. It is something that has been weighed up for some time, as juggling commitments, fulltime work and two kids who are growing up very fast has adjusted priorities. Ideally, if there was someone who wanted to walk in and take over a ready-made Gallery, with all the hard work done, we would love to discuss, but other than that, it will be farewell for now. Rest assured future projects are in the pipeline. During our time there, we have channelled over $30000 dollars into over 40 AMAZING local Artists pockets, held eight Exhibitions using local catering, musicians, and comedians, and run over 45 workshops for children, youth and locals. The space has been a gathering place for many, and we have had amazing Volunteers who have brought a wealth of varied skills and lots of good humour and laughter, with many gaining experience and going onto paid employment. We have hosted other businesses specialising in music lessons, massage, Reiki, Access Bars, crystal work, pottery, and fashion, and launched affirmative action whilst empowering youth, devoted to the #itstimeforapipeline cause. As much as the Gallery has played a role in the community, the community has supported the Gallery, and we are forever grateful to have been a small part in the much larger story of our town. Thankyou Mount Morgan, and here is to turning the page, renewal and regeneration. JOY Exhibition Do not fret, our Joy exhibition will be going ahead, albeit for a shorter duration. “JOY” will commence Saturday evening, 27 November at 6pm with nibbles, entertainment and drinks and run through to the 15 of December. For submissions, email mountmorgangallery@mail.com or call 0411 865 621.

On a personal note, I would like to thank Barb. She’s been the best mentor that anyone could ask for. I have learnt so many things from her over the past three years as Secretary.

Mount Morgan in Pictures By Catherine McIntosh, descendant of the colonial Stubbs family of Mount Morgan

William Pattison: his rise and fall

William went into Mount Morgan as one of five of the original syndicate. There’s a family photo of him looking like the cat that got the cream. William was Member for Rockhampton and the Queensland Treasurer at one stage. He was a wellconnected politician with a wide range of business interests, with a love of the Rockhampton area. Our family is peppered with clever people, but no-one has risen to William’s level of public attention. Journalist and author, James Grant (‘Battler’) Pattison (1862-1946), son of one of the original Mount Morgan Syndicate members, William Pattison (1830-1896) (pictured), wrote that his father ‘lost more than he gained from Mount Morgan, and he would have been a wealthier and happier man had he never known it’ (Evening News (Rockhampton, Qld : 1924-1941), 31 July 1929). William Pattison’s great-great-granddaughter, Albury artist, Vicki Pattison Luke (pictured), provides some insight into Battler’s intriguing quote. “My family were business people in the colony. My paternal great-great-grandfather, William Pattison, was a real go-getter, who made the most of opportunities. He and his brother had butcher shops supplying meat to the Ballarat goldfields and Melbourne hotels before William went to Rockhampton. His first business in Rockhampton was a butcher shop. William bought and sold stations because stock was his core business. A family anecdote is that he made £10,000 in a tallow (beef and mutton fat) deal in ten minutes! A shrewd and tough businessman, I expect. His children described him as an astute businessman and no-nonsense. Page 12

However, William’s reputation as a prominent member of the community was at stake when Mount Morgan shares began to fall. I believe William tried to buy collapsing shares to prop up the share price as people he knew lost their money. He just didn’t have enough capital. So it all must have been dreadful to be a public figure and the figurehead of those lost investments. I believe he had a stroke in his midsixties as the pressure of his collapsed empire became too much.” Left: c. 1890 / Hobart-born William Pattison (18301896) / Butcher and station owner / Original Mount Morgan [gold mining] Syndicate member (18821886) / Original shareholder and director of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company Limited (18861896) / Politician. VET NEWS Everyone loves a happy ending and here at Alma Street Veterinary Hospital we certainly cherish them. Just recently we were reminded of the importance of microchipping your pets. One very sad family had been missing their cat for about four and half months and had just come to terms with the sad reality that they might never see their cat again and had purchased two new kittens. Meanwhile... A lovely lady brought in a handsome ginger cat to us at Alma Street Veterinary Hospital, who had followed her home. She figured it had to be someone’s pet as he was so friendly. One of our receptionists scanned the cat with the hope that he had a microchip and luckily, he did! We got in contact with his owners, who had a very surprised and excited reaction. They raced down to the vet to pick him up and were reunited at last. Without a microchip, he may have never made it back home. Microchipping only costs $55 and is a quick needle under the skin, between the shoulder blades of your pet. All the details are then sent to a records company and kept in case your pet ever goes missing. It’s not only a great idea but makes it so easy for us to get your pet back to you as soon as possible. Unfortunately, the only down fall we see quite frequently is when we find an animal who is microchipped, but the details are not up to date.

THE ORANGE DOT By Larry at Fox Video

Movie Review SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED Every now and then you want, no, need something of Mum and old-fashioned fruitcake, traditional values, people loved and trusted, warmth, laughter and safety. It can all get a bit much sometimes, this old world of ours. Like when your business is almost totally smashed by a hailstorm (as were many others I’m sure) and thousands of movie cases (made of plastic and paper) are completely soaked and needing immediate attention to save them before they dry and are totally ruined. The task seemed daunting, insurmountable, soul-destroying. However, not having time to wallow we got stuck in straight away and like eating an elephant, first we took one bite, then two... Three days later victory was declared. The day was saved. (Our thoughts go out to everyone who was battered by the storm, not least of which was our local flock of tiny double-bar finches who were stuck in the open with nowhere to hide. Amazingly, after several days to heal, most of the flock have returned, having survived a battering from hailstones as big as they were. It’s times like these that it’s good to have something to turn to like SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED. Not all mail makes it to its intended recipient, so what happens to the undeliverable mail? Created by the person who brought you TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL,

Martha Williamson, SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED has a unique premise which focuses on a very special group of postal detectives who take it upon themselves to team up and use their own unique sets of skills to track down the intended recipients of undeliverable mail which is often so damaged that the address is indecipherable. These assignments usually take them out of their headquarters, The Dead Letter Office, and into the world at large to deliver letters and packages that can sometimes save souls, solve crimes, reunite old loves, and change lives and the mysteries they solve often relate back to their own personal journeys. Our loveable team includes leader, charming postal detective and old-school gentleman Oliver O’Toole, technophile Miss Shane McInerney, free-spirited Tita Haywith and master researcher Norman Dorman. Sit back and enjoy these often inspirational and heart-warming tales as our postal detectives, “The Postables” work together to solve the mystery and get the mail to its destination time and again. And although late, in some respects it often gets there at just the right time. Suitable for the whole family, SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED is like balm on an open wound - it’s wonderful, a must-see and it will help you to heal. SIGNED SEALED DELIVERED... Loved it!
