The soundscape is based around a train excursion to Bell Park at Emu Park for the Linda Picnic and was made possible with funding from the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Program, the Rockhampton Regional Council’s Community Assistance Program and Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc [MMPAD]. MMPAD President Mr John Steinberger said the project involved the installation of speakers on the platform, acquiring portable speakers for the railmotor and the development of two soundscapes - one depicting a busy platform where picnic-goers are waiting to board the train and one that recounts the actual journey to Emu Park. “MMPAD is also planning to develop a brochure that will be given to visitors to the museum so they could learn about this important part of Mount Morgan’s tradition,” Mr Steinberger said. “The beauty of using modern technology is that we will be able to expand on the soundscape at a future date,” he said.

In addition to Labor’s $3.5 million commitment to Mount Morgan, Labor has announced our plan to future-proof Australia’s water resources, including by establishing a National Water Commission and broadening the National Water Grid Investment Framework to include town water.

LABOR WATER COMMITMENT FOR THE MOUNT Labor will commit $3.5 million for detailed design, approvals and construction support services for a pipeline, which is an essential next step in providing a long-term water security solution for the community. Mount Morgan’s water supply ran dry last year, and Council have been sending truckloads of water to the town each day. “Labor wants to see a permanent, safe and secure water supply for Mount Morgan which is why we are funding this important next step,” Shadow Minister Terri Butler MP said. memories of norma leigh - a hard life, but a good life

swimming holes, picnics in the hills and lots of friends playing and using their imagination. As a family they all looked forward to their annual holiday at Yeppoon where they enjoyed walking to town and swimming along the way almost every day as the tide came in. It was their adventure.

Norma Iris Leigh (Sleeman) was born on 10 April 1925 in Rockhampton, on her Aunt’s veranda to parents Gladys and Percy Sleeman. Her family was not a wealthy one and with five girls and one boy, life was very modest and full of hard work, helping and sharing. They moved a few times, as families did then and she had fond memories of Takoko, Boaga and Rannes, all little railway communities where there was work for her father. It is in Mount Morgan that she met and married Colin Stanley Leigh and established a life. They had five children and like her family it consisted of mostly girls, Yvonne, Jennifer, Colleen, Suze and one protective, proud big brother Bevan. They live in houses in Hall, Pattison, and the top end of Darcy Street as a young family. The family finally settled in Mount Morgan where other family members lived and where work and support were in abundance. Despite this Norma always made her childhood sound like an adventure. They would catch fish and crabs on Baffle Creek and sell them to passengers and staff passing through on trains, they would play until dark with other neighbourhood children and make the most out of the chores that were expected of them. The Leigh family was never a wealthy family either, but while they lived a simplistic life, adventures and love were in bucket loads. Norma knew how to make life fun for her children and as a good cook, knew how to make sure that they never went hungry. Their childhoods existed of walks to local parks and Page 4

One of Norma’s proudest times in life was purchasing 64 D’arcy Street, Mount Morgan in the early 1960’s, paying it off at approximately 3/4 of Colin’s pay. It is in that house and the adjoining yard that so many memories have been made and shared. She told stories how her tiny kitchen often became a dance floor, and the house would be filled with music and laughter. Her doors were always open to help anyone that needed it. Her kettle was always boiled and sweets on the table for anyone who needed an ear or a break. Her stovetop and oven were always busy making food to share with family and friends. Her kindness and love of people was extended to the paper boys delivering their papers in winter who might need some porridge to warm their bellies. Norma never expected any acknowledgment or recognition just knowing that she had helped someone was enough. Norma was a very uncomplicated person who didn’t beat around the bush if she had something to say that she thought was important and with her what you saw was what you got. As her grandchildren and great grandchildren know if there was something she disapproved of like short shorts or a tattoo, you would simply get a shake of her head and her infamous eye roll. This look of dissatisfaction was enough to make Alex in particular ensure that she had packed something appropriate to wear for her visits. She would ground us when the world seemed to be getting difficult and reminded us to be grateful and see the brighter side. She would often giggle when someone was relaying a story about how naughty the kids were being, this was probably because she was thinking about her mischievous self as a child or maybe because she absolutely adored little ones. She didn’t think money or material possessions, or status were important in life, but was always generous with what she had. She dreaded the thought that she would turn 100 and receive a letter from the Queen or the prime minister remarking “I don’t want letters from them, they’re just the same as us.” Norma has lived through so many world events and seen so many changes in her almost 97 years. The repercussions of WWI, a depression, WWII, the Vietnam War, economic collapses, the invention of electricity, cars, television, computers, rock and roll. What a life! As she would say she had a hard life, but it has been a good life.

DEE RIVER OLDIES There was a good turnout of members for the March morning tea and AGM. It was good to catch up with members who enjoyed their morning tea. The raffle was won by Jean Morgenstern and the lucky door prize was won by Ruth Summers. The AGM was held, and the positions were declared vacant. With no other nominations for the positions Carol Glover accepted the position of President and Colleen Constable accepted the position of Secretary. The position of Treasurer will be left open. Have a think about it and let us know if you are interested. We would like to thank our members for helping with the morning tea and the donations received. Check out the back page of the Argus ‘Save the Date’ for the next meeting and morning tea dates. Our guest speaker will be from RRC Disaster Management. Stay happy and healthy. Shopping on Morgan Street

This 1913 image from the State Library of Queensland shows an eclectic mix of Morgan Street businesses with interesting shopfronts. You may recognise some of the businesses from my previous articles in this shopfront series, such as tailors, Sidney Gray and J. A. Bukowski. Horse-drawn carriages and motor vehicles line the street, with the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company’s chimneys as a backdrop. Based on the building signage, businesses from the corner of Morgan Street and Morgan Lane (far right) towards Central Street are: • Lee & Humphreys. Booksellers – Stationers – Artistic Printers. • S. W. Jones. Watchmaker Jeweller & Optician. • Henry McLean. Boot & Shoe Importer. Boot Palace. • Sidney Gray. Tailor and Mercer [fabric merchant]. • Mrs J. Winter. The Arctic Fountain [refreshment rooms]. • Chemist. Thos. Hempenstall. • D. D. O’Connell & Co. Clothiers, Drapers, Tailors & Milliners. • A. • Music Warehouse. • Unidentified store. • The People’s Cash Store [grocery, produce, household goods store]. • Woods & Co. [draper and milliner]. In line with earlier shopfront images I have published, businesses from draper, Woods & Co., to the corner of Morgan and Central Streets in 1913 would have been: • Central Queensland Meat Export Company, Limited. • Charles Williams. THE ORANGE DOT By Larry at Fox Video

Movie Review CRY MACHO “Go ahead, make my day!” You know who this is instantly, right? Even President Ronald Reagan used this line. Need a clue? How about “ I know what you’re thinking -’ Did he fire six shots or only five?’ Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I’ve kinda lost track myself. But, being as this is a .44 magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and would blow your head clean off, you’ve gotta ask yourself one question: ‘Do I feel lucky?’ Well, do you, punk?” It’s now more than fifty years since Dirty Harry muttered those immortal lines, almost sixty years since we were introduced to “The Man With No Name” or “Blondie” in the Sergio Leone trilogy FISTFUL OF DOLLARS, FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE and THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY, and sixty-five years since Rowdy Yares first sauntered onto the set of RAWHIDE. For all of that iconic history Clint Eastwood is far from slowing down or resting on his laurels. He says that as long as people want to hear his stories he’s going to keep telling them. We are so grateful that this amazing man is still going strong

and still working. Even though Clint told the world that THE MULE was his last time out in front of the camera, as we suspected, and thankfully, the right role comes along and he wants back in - you can’t keep a good man down. A man, a boy and a rooster - what else do you need to begin a great story. Mike Milo was a big deal back in the day. A major rodeo star, fame, glory, accolades and riches were heaped upon the tall, lean young man who tamed wild beasts in the ring. Few roughriders are good with money though, they tend to live in the moment - and none of them have long careers. Definitely a young fella’s game. So Mike moved on to become a horse-breeder but still kept in touch with Howard Polk, his old friend who ran the rodeo stadium in Galveston, Texas. Eventually, due to his bad back Milo retired to his small cabin and few remaining trophies and clippings that hadn’t been sold off. He was surprised when Howard turned up with a most unusual but very lucrative request. Following

LORIKEETS SEASON STARTS ON SHAKY GROUND Mount Morgan Lorikeets started off the season playing against Rockhampton Brothers at Biloela. The score was not a reflection of how well the Lorikeets played. The first try was scored by Kyle Dodd and second by Connor Stewart. The final scoreboard was 1459 to Brothers. Mount Morgan played Gladstone at Rockhampton. The Lorikeets didn’t score any points in the final score of 19-0. The team has two weeks off with a bye and then Easter, then it will back to the field playing Biloela in Biloela. The first home game in over two years will be on 7 May. Times to be confirmed. Follow the Lorikeets on their Facebook page for updates. Page 14

his divorce some five years ago Howard had lost custody of his only son Rafo who was taken to Mexico to live with his mother. More than anything Howard wants his boy back. He wants Mike to go down there and “retrieve” Rafo from the very tight grip of his wealthy mother and her highly questionable, very suspicious, well-heeled, heavily armed cronies. The $50,000 would be a great help to Mike but this job sounded way too dodgy. He says “no”. But Howard had done so much for him in the past. He was his old friend and he DID owe him. He looked at the old pickup truck outside. This promised to be a hell of a roadtrip... Co-starring Dwight Yoakam as Howard (always good), CRY MACHO runs for 104 minutes and is rated M for ‘mature themes’ (we’d give it a PG13, suitable for the family). Really, it’s just great to see Clint on screen again. CRY MACHO loved it!
