MOUNT MORGAN AQUATIC CENTRE OFFICIALLY OPENED

To celebrate the opening of Mount Morgan’s brandnew Aquatic Centre, Rockhampton Regional Council hosted a Community Open Day on Saturday, 13 April.

Families were given the opportunity to enjoy free entry into the Aquatic Centre and a free BBQ throughout the day, ice blocks and jumping castle.

Divisional Councillor Cherie Rutherford and Councillor for Parks, Sport and Public Spaces said locals had been embracing the new facility since the pool opened three weeks ago.

“We have been really pleased to see some fantastic attendance numbers since the opening which really highlights what a great investment this facility is for the Mount Morgan community,” Cr Rutherford said.

“The sight of swimming lessons, aerobic classes, and families coming along to enjoy the new pool over the school holidays has created a wonderful atmosphere and is bringing life back to the facility exactly as we had envisioned.

“We are extremely grateful for receiving $4.5 million from the Queensland Government’s Resources Community Infrastructure Fund in addition to Council’s $2 million investment to allow the community of Mount Morgan to finally have a pool that meets

contemporary standards.

“Importantly, there are some fantastic features incorporated into the new facility as a result of input from locals, like the gold mine themed wet play area and the revival of the grandstand, which have come together really well.

“I really looked forward to enjoying the Community Day with locals and seeing the enjoyment on people’s faces as they come through the gates to celebrate,” Cr Rutherford said.

Assistant Minister for State Development and Infrastructure, Julieanne Gilbert said the Miles’ Government was proud to have invested $4.5 million for the new Mount Morgan Aquatic Centre.

“This will be a fantastic facility, not just for fun and relaxation, but for the vital work of helping our children learn how to swim safely,” Ms Gilbert said.

Member for Rockhampton, Barry O’Rourke MP the centre was going to make such a huge difference to the community of Mount Morgan

“I am proud to be part of the Miles Labour Government that helped deliver it.

“The completion of the new Aquatic Centre will be a delight for so many through our very hot summers,” Mr O’Rourke said.

The Mount Morgan pool project is proudly funded by the Resources Community Infrastructure Fund – a voluntary partnership between the Queensland Government and the resources industry through the Queensland Resources Council, in association with Rockhampton Regional Council.

The pool is operated by Splash-A-Bout Swim School.

DR RICHARDS - A GALLIPOLI HERO

Thursday, 25 April 2024 will be the 109th anniversary of the inaugural landing at Gallipoli.

At dawn on 25 April 1915, Allied troops landed on the Gallipoli peninsula in Ottoman Turkey. The Gallipoli campaign was the land-based element of a strategy intended to allow Allied ships to pass through the Dardanelles, capture Constantinople (now Istanbul) and ultimately knock Ottoman Turkey out of the war.

Allied success in the campaign could have weakened the Central Powers, allowed Britain and France to support Russia and helped to secure British strength in the Middle East. But success depended on Ottoman Turkish opposition quickly crumbling.

General Sir Ian Hamilton decided to make two landings, placing the British 29th Division at Cape Helles and the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) north of Gaba Tepe in an area later dubbed Anzac Cove. Both landings were quickly contained by determined Ottoman troops, and neither the British nor the Anzacs were able to advance.

Trench warfare quickly took hold at Gallipoli, mirroring

the fighting of the Western Front. At Anzac Cove it was particularly intensive. Casualties in both locations mounted heavily, and in the summer heat conditions rapidly deteriorated. Sickness was rampant, food quickly became inedible and there were vast swarms of black corpse flies.

In August a new assault was launched north of Anzac Cove against the hills around Chunuk Bair. This attack, along with a fresh landing at Suvla Bay, quickly failed and stalemate returned. Finally, in December, it was decided to evacuate - first Anzac and Suvla, followed by Helles in January 1916.

One of the many men to perish at Gallipoli was Dr Samuel Jabez Richards, a doctor from Mount Morgan (Pictured left).

Samuel was the fifth child of Moses and Eliza (nee Sullivan) and was born at Dean on the Ballarat Goldfields. After Samuel’s birth, the family moved back to Tasmania.

Samuel started his working life as a teacher. It wasn’t until after his marriage to Jessie Kidd in 1885, and with the assistance of Jessie’s parents that Samuel was able to fulfill his dream of becoming a doctor.

His wife’s parents paid for Samuel to study medicine in Sydney and he was told not to pay back the loan.

After graduating in 1893, he was appointed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital at Glebe Point. His next appointment as assistance to Dr Frank Liddell.

By this time Samuel’s Brother, George Richards was the manager of Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company and in 1896 George wired Samuel advising him that Mount Morgan was in of a doctor. Samuel initially went alone in 1896 with his wife and children following in 1897.

Samuel soon established a large practice in Mount Morgan. He was an advocate of simple foods and home grown fruit and vegetables and of not eating anything too hot or too cold.

Samuel took a keen interest in military matters and was for some years medical officer of the 15th Regiment of the Light Horse. When the 1st Australian Ambulance B Section was formed, he was given the command. In 1914 he volunteered for active service and at the age of 50, as a Major he became second in command of the Australian Clearing Hospital.

Samuel was given a send-off at the Mount Morgan School of Arts and soon set sail to the front, landing in Gallipoli in 1915 where he served until coming down with pneumonia. He was evacuated from Gallipoli on 21 July 1915, but died during transportation and was buried at sea.

In 2015 a contingent of Samuel’s descendants journeyed to Mount Morgan to pay their respects at the commemoration, marking 100 years since the Gallipoli landing.

REVITALISATION PROJECT UP FOR ARCHITECTURAL AWARD.

It’s been almost seven years since Mount Morgan’s main street was revitalised and it now has been nominated for two awards - one a general architectural award and the other for a People’s Choice Award.

This is where Mount Morgan residents can help simply by following the link and instructions on the right. Voting closes on 20 May 2024.

The design took eight months to complete by design+architecture in collaboration with M. Ramsay and Rockhampton Regional Council.

Architect Colin Strydom said his firm was approached by the council who had some strong ideas about what was to be done.

“Some of the elements were to be left - like the Running the Cutter Statue and the Elvet Lewis Memorial,” he said.

“Inspiration was drawn from the Tree of Knowledge that once stood in Morgan Street.

“The tree was very significant and it was important to us to include it in the design, “ he said.

“We waited for bougainvillea to grow until we submitted the nomination he said.

“We have been amazed that there is no real graffiti which I feel is a sign of respect for the project,” he

said.

“We are very passionate about Mount Morgan and hope that through the awards process, a spotlight shines on Mount Morgan.”

MIRANI MESSAGE

With Stephen Andrew, MP

Lest We Forget – 109 years on from the landing at Gallipoli. It is with respect I acknowledge those who have served our country and current military personnel, who work to give us the freedoms we have in Australia today. I am attending a number of Anzac Day events in this part of the Mirani electorate, sharing stories and memories.

The Golden Mount Festival and the Mount Morgan Rodeo weekend are fast approaching. Again, this year I am sponsoring both events (as I have done for the past seven years). What a fabulous way to spend the May Day weekend, so put it in your calendar and I’ll see you there!

There will be many visitors (from interstate and overseas) driving to and through Mount Morgan and Central Queensland (CQ) during Beef Week from 5-11 May (held in Rockhampton). CQ is ‘flavour of the month’ showcasing our region and promoting and celebrating our sustainable cattle industry. During this time, please take care on the roads.

Important Telecommunication Update: The mobile phone 3G network shut down is ongoing with Telstra’s network ceasing on 30 June 2024. To check your phone Telstra customers can text ‘3’ to 3498 and receive a message confirming your phone’s status. Optus is shutting down its 3G network in September 2024. Optus advise they are contacting all affected customers directly. You can also call to check your mobile phone status on 1300 219 070.

If you or a loved one are currently using a personal medical device or personal security alarm that relies on the 3G band, it will stop working when the 3G networks close. Please check with the device manufacturer as soon as possible.

It was good to be in Mount Morgan for my visit last week. Some issues raised include problems for residents dealing with CQHHS Oral Health Service and discussions regarding recreational and competitive shooter gun laws and regulations. Do call my office if you have issues with government departments. I will endeavour to assist you.

One hundred and nine years ago, soldiers from the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula.

The landing was part of the ill-fated Dardanelles Campaign – the Allies’ attempt to break the stalemate on the Western Front by opening a second front that also sought to force Ottoman Turkey out of the war.

Bitter fighting took place over the following months, resulting in dreadful casualties on both sides.

With no chance of success, a withdrawal commenced; and in December that year, the remaining Australians were evacuated.

Of the 50,000 Australians who served on Gallipoli, more than 8,700 died and almost 18,000 were wounded.

Gallipoli was one tragedy within the greater catastrophe of the First World War. A war which engulfed a generation and defined the times which followed.

We pay tribute to all Australians who have served and died in wars and operational service.

Those who fought to end evil and topple tyranny.

Those who worked to protect and promote peace. Those who returned from service physically wounded and mentally scarred.

And those who gave their lives, sacrificing their days so that we could live ours.

On this sacred occasion, we also thank the men and women of the Australian Defence Force.

Those people who today carry on the duty of defending our nation and its interests.

Men and women serving at home, in our region, and far beyond it.

They contribute to our national responses to the pandemic and natural disasters.

They support our Pacific friends and neighbours. And they help maintain maritime security in the very important Indo-Pacific region.

They assist in international peacekeeping, humanitarian, and security operations around the globe.

Australians are grateful for, and proud of the efforts of our servicemen and women who keep Australia safe and secure.

And importantly, we acknowledged their families.

The wives, husbands, children, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, and grandparents who make a

sacrifice in their own right while their loved ones are away on training or on mission.

Australians across the nation will commemorate Anzac Day in many ways.

Some will attend dawn services, local memorials, and parades.

Many will watch the televised national service at the Australian War Memorial and importantly observe one minute’s silence.

Others will proudly wear medals – awarded in service or handed down by loved ones.

But the manner of commemoration is not as important as the mere act of commemorating.

For in remembering the original Anzacs – and those that followed them – we not only recall their deeds, but also recognise the best qualities that defined them.

Qualities which represent the highest standard for the Australian character and the society that we desire to live in.

A society defined by sacrifice, not entitlement. By mateship, not malevolence. By egalitarianism, not tribalism. By responsibility, not resentment. And by optimism, not cynicism.

On Anzac Day, we express gratitude through tribute, we nurture community through commemoration, and we find meaning in remembrance.

Anzac Day brochures from Senator Matthew Canavan and I have been delivered containing information about the significance of Anzac Day and details of local commemorations in the Flynn electorate.

Lest we forget.

FUNDING FOR ARTS PROJECTS

If you have an idea for an arts project, then the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) may be able to help.

The next round of Rockhampton’s RADF is now open, with applications being sought for projects that will start after 1 June 2024.

RADF is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Rockhampton Regional Council, supporting professional artists and arts practice in regional areas.

RADF covers projects that enhance the arts on a local level by providing financial assistance to support artists’ professional development or increase artists’ employment opportunities.

Funding comes under two categories – Development Grant and Project Grant

Development grants for artists and arts workers cover: professional career development, skills development workshops, concept development and creative development of new work. Assistance is available for up to 65 percent of the total costs to a maximum of $5000.

Project Grants cover: artistic components of exhibitions, performances, festivals and events, public presentations. Assistance is available for up to 80 percent of the total cost to a maximum of $10,000.

Rockhampton Regional Council Communities and Heritage portfolio spokesperson Cr Drew Wickerson encouraged local individuals and groups to see if RADF could help them.

“RADF can support all kinds of projects, within these two broad categories,” he said.

“I recommend that anyone considering an arts project have a look at the case studies of recent RADF funding rounds to see the kinds of applications that have been successful. These are available on the RADF page of Council’s web site” he said.

Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch said the Queensland Government’s successful, long-term partnership with local governments through the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) supports the delivery of hundreds of arts experiences, employment opportunities and capacity building for arts and cultural workers across the state.

“As part of our ongoing commitment to strengthen local communities and drive economic outcomes through arts and culture, the Queensland Government has provided $2.184 million for RADF 2023-24 to 59 local councils who have contributed a co-investment of $1.979 million,” Minister Enoch said.

“The Queensland Government’s Creative Together 2020-2030 roadmap prioritises activation of Queensland’s places and spaces and arts engagement that drives positive change for Queensland communities. Projects funded through

RADF support communities to share stories and creativity, provide important pathways for learning and connection, and boost local creative economies and tourism.”

Applications are now being accepted for projects commencing on or after Saturday 1 June 2024.

Applications close 5pm Friday 26 April 2024. For more information, visit www.rockhamptonregion. qld.gov.au/RADF or contact Rockhampton Regional Council on 4932 9000 or email RADF@rrc.qld.gov. au.

Find the History of Your House

Peeling back the wallpaper in your house can sometimes reveal fascinating insights into the lives of families who have lived there before. Newspaper fragments, heights of children carefully measured on doorjambs and snippets of graffiti written by builders can tell stories of previous inhabitants. Dig a little deeper with renovations and owners frequently start to ask questions about the origins of the house, what it used to look like and who lived there.

The Rockhampton History Centre at the Rockhampton Southside Library has a range of books, journals, photographs, newspapers, microfilm, family and business records and Council archives. These resources are incredibly useful for researchers and family historians as they start to investigate the history of their house.

During Australian Heritage Month, History Centre staff will present a free information session at the Southside Library on Tuesday 14 May, from 9.30 -10.30am on ‘Finding the History of your house using Library resources.’ The session will be repeated on Saturday 18 May from 9.30 -10.30am at the Southside Library.

This information session will explore how resources such as vintage photographs, Council rates books, newspapers, government archives and family histories can be pieced together like a puzzle to find the history of your house.

Bookings are preferred as seats will be limited. Please call our Library Administration office on 4936 8043 to reserve your seat.

Pop the search term ‘Mount Morgan’ into the online library catalogue and select ‘Historical Images Search’ as another limiter and thumbnail images of digitised photographs from the Central Queensland collection will be revealed. Nearly 190 digitised images will be shown in this search, but there are thousands more physical images held in this extensive archival collection at the Rockhampton History Centre.

Please contact our Rockhampton History Centre Monday to Friday from 9.00 am-5.30 pm on phone 4936 8043 or libraries@rrc.qld.gov.au if you would like to know more.

CQ TALENT TO PERFORM AT FESTIVAL

Two talented artists will perform Centre Stage at the 2024 Golden Mount Festival.

Celeste Caught (pictured left) is a singer from Rockhampton, who never fails to put on a great show.

Accompanied by local creative professionals, Celeste brings you a repertoire of pop, rock and funk from inspirations such as Amy Winehouse, Etta James and Alicia Keys.

“Nothing commands the atmosphere of an event like live music. It is the soundscape that truly captures the emotion of any event and creating this soundscape is what I love doing.

“When we perform, we aren’t just playing songs, we are building memories and bringing people together by creating a warm atmosphere with the songs that people love. See you all at the festival!” Celeste said.

Up and coming performer and Rockhampton-born, 23 year old Jaymon Bob, started performing a year ago.

DEE RIVER OLDIES

We remember all the soldiers on ANZAC DAY who went off to fight for their country over the years. Growing up in Mount Morgan we saw the mateship among those that fought and the bonding of their families over the years.

With the rain we have had, the dam is looking good. The amount of people from out of town that have visited has been good to see. Catching up with friends and family is so important to make the precious memories.

Our members are looking forward to our next Musical Morning Tea on 24 April, 2024 starting 10 am. The music will be by Lyn Anstey. It will be held in St Mary's Hall, Gordon Street, Mount Morgan. The cost is $5.

There will be a lucky door and raffle prizes.

Come along and enjoy catching up, morning tea and the music.New and existing members welcome. You must be aged over 50 years old. There is no cost for membership.

Stay happy and healthy.

Festival Performers...From Page 14

Jaymon, a proud Ghungalu man, said music had always been a part of his life, however, a lack of confidence kept him from taking to the stage.

“Music has always been a huge part of my life and my family’s life he said.

“I love how music can bring people together. I love networking and meeting new people,” he said.

“I am only new to performing and I just love learning new things and getting tips from other experienced musicians.

At his second performance, Jaymon opened up for Busby Marou.

Celeste and Jaymon will appear at the 2024 Golden Mount Festival along with John Bidgood and Alisha and Amanda Sealy.
