107-year Legacy commemorated - from Page 1 Australia’s most defining moment in history - the Gallipoli Campaign - was commemorated and remembered in schools and in the community in 2022. Mount Morgan Central State School held a special ANZAC Day Service with students organising and presenting the service. Veterans, Mike Johnston, Cheryl Cunynghame and Michelle Emery were special guests. Mr Johnston spoke about three of the many important aspects of the Gallipoli Campaign - Simpson and his Donkey, the football match played and the evacuation.
opportunity to pay their respects at the Dawn Service and the 11 am Service which had the best attendance in many years. The ANZAC Day address was given by Mr Jim Lynch, a Royal Australian Navy Veteran. who spoke about the meaning of ANZAC. Pastor Justin Morgan of the Peace Christian Church spoke about the sense of hope the ANZACs must have felt when going into the conflict. He said the wide cross sections of generations present at the service were all beneficiaries of the hope experienced by the ANZACs.
Following the bugled Last Post, one minute’s silence and Reveille, students led by Preps Hunter and Zamira, laid handmade wreaths of poppies around a cross. Mount Morgan State High School held its Leadership Induction (postponed due to a late start to school) prior to its ANZAC Day Service. School Captain, Amy Hansson reminded us that ANZAC Day was more than a national holiday, saying it was a fundamental Australian tradition. “ANZAC Day is not merely a date, or some remote campaign, but rather a spirit,” she said. Jesse Tyne (School Captain) spoke about Mount Morgan miner Oliver Woodward who fought in the tunnels in Belgium. “The Australians were given the sarcastic name of “diggers”. In true, typical Australian style, the troops wore the name with pride,” Jesse recounted. Mount Morgan Community members had the

RAIL TRAILS FEEDBACK REQUIRED Plans for a multi-use rail trail from Mount Morgan to Gracemere are continuing to make tracks, with Rockhampton Regional Council releasing a preliminary design to the public this week. The design is the next stage of the project that could provide a recreational route for cyclists, walkers and potentially horse riders and cover a distance almost 30km. Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams said the design released this week offers a detailed look at the proposed track and incorporates a wide range of feedback received from the community over the past months. “Last year we carried out community consultation for this project and asked the community their thoughts on an initial concept design we had developed,” Mayor Williams said. “We received feedback on a whole range of things including the trail’s alignment, potential rest stops, picnic areas and also things like fencing, gating and trail access and all of this has helped shape a detailed preliminary design. “This design provides a lot more
detail into what the proposed trail will look like, as well as its final route and even the type of surfaces at certain sections of the trail.” Parks Sport and Public Spaces Councillor Cherie Rutherford said Council is now inviting the community to review the preliminary design and provide their thoughts on the plan to date. “It’s the next big step in assessing this project’s potential and how likely it is that we will be able to see it come to fruition,” Cr Rutherford said. “While it’s a really exciting project, no decision has been made as to whether it will definitely proceed and any feedback we receive from the community helps to inform our final decision.” Member for Rockhampton Barry O’Rourke said the design work was supported with a $250,000 grant from the Palaszczuk Government’s Transport and Main Roads Rail Trail Local Government Grants Program. “Rail trails are a great way to repurpose the space for those keen on getting out and about,” Mr
O’Rourke said.
“They support active, healthy lifestyles, and contribute to environmental preservation and management. “And we know that, on average, every dollar we invest in bike-riding infrastructure will return nearly five dollars in economic benefit to Queensland with improved health outcomes, reduced traffic congestion, and lower transport costs. “They also create diversity in local economies and encourage the growth and creation of small businesses in hospitality and tourism. "That’s why the Queensland Government has committed $252 million in funding over the next four years to support and encourage bike riding across the state, including investigating options to turn disused rail corridors into vibrant bike riding facilities for locals and tourists alike, getting more people riding more often.” To provide your thoughts on the design, head to Council’s Engagement website: engage. rockhamptonregion.qld.gov.au

LIBRARY NEWS This time of year is full of public holidays. This gives many of us time to catch up on our reading, learn a new skill or spend time with family and friends. Though the library buildings are closed on public holidays, the Rockhampton Regional Libraries are always available online. If you forgot to stock up on reading material before the long weekend simply visit the online catalogue to find out about our range of digital resources or pick up an “Online resources @ your library” pamphlet during your next visit for more information. If you are planning a car trip this Labour Day long weekend, Rockhampton Regional Libraries recommend audiobooks for travel
entertainment. Audiobooks have all the benefits of reading while leaving you free to do other tasks or enjoy the scenery. You can listen to your favourite story while driving to the store or holiday destination. The most wonderful thing about audiobooks is that they can be accessed straight from your phone using the BorrowBox or Libby apps! Simply download the app and log in with your library card to browse hundreds of audiobooks, eBooks and eMagazines. If you have some extra time over the long weekend why not try out a free course on LinkedIn Learning? There are courses on many different topics such as
computer programming, article writing, mindfulness and painting. Each course is self-paced and offers a certificate of completion. Visit the online catalogue and click on the LinkedIn Learning icon to find out more. All Rockhampton Regional Libraries will be closed 2 May for the Labour Day Holiday. Gentlefolk tour Mount Morgan for sixth time The Gentlefolk Single-speed, Fixie and old Bike Society is hosting its annual Mount Morgan ride on Saturday, 7 May. Starting out at 3 pm from the Collectables and Memories shop in East Street Mount Morgan, the ride this year is called “Something New and Something Old”. This is the sixth edition of the Gentlefolk ride in Mount Morgan, so new places are getting harder to find. Hopefully I will have a couple of new places to go to. People have requested that the ride includes spots visited on previous rides as they would like to look at a particular spot or point of interest. This year we will go to the dam, to look at the work that was done there, then over to the cemetery, a request, with more points of interest along the way. Anyone is welcome to join us for the ride, an old bike is good, but Page 10
any bike is fine. The only rule is, no lycra, just wear comfy clothes and shoes. The ride should finish about 5.30 pm, as usual we will have a postride cool drink at the Leichhardt Hotel and anyone that would like to can stay for dinner. If anyone would like to stay overnight, there is a range of MOUNT MORGAN ARGUS
accommodation in Mount Morgan, message me on FB if you would like more information. The Facebook page is Gentlefolk Single-speed, Fixie and old Bike Society So, if you see a group of people on bikes riding around, give them a wave and encouraging cheers, they are friendly folk as well. OLD SCHOOL BICYCLE SHOW The Central Queensland Old School Bicycle Show and Swap Meet this year is on Sunday, 31 July, between 10 am and 2 pm at the Leichhardt Hotel. We have managed to run the show throughout the Covid pandemic, so this year with the restraints over we hope that more people will be able to attend. The Show highlights pre-2000 bicycles, so if you have grandad’s old bike under the house, dust it off and bring it along. The swap meet is open as well, so you can bring any bike related things along to sell. There will be music playing in the beer garden as well as other activities happening to make for an entertaining day. Submitted by Graeme Meade.

REMEMBERING BETTY WARE – A LIFE WELL LIVED
Betty May Ware was born on 30 October 1933 to Alex and Beatrice McDougall at Lady Goodwin Maternity Hospital, Rockhampton.
the 1950s, Betty worked as a cook for Stewarts at the QN Hotel, and later for the Lomas family at the Leichhardt Hotel.
The early years of her life were spent in Mount Morgan until her mother died when she was 6 years old.
In the 70s, Frank and Betty moved to “Playfields” and later, “Thuriba”, properties located near Wowan where they quickly became valued members of the local community.
Although the time with her mother was short, she retained idyllic memories of the time she and her siblings spent with their mother, memories she often recalled throughout her life. She continued to mourn her mother’s passing until the end of her life. Following her mother’s death, she and her 2 brothers were raised by their grandmother. It became a busy household as her grandmother became the carer of other grandchildren. They were all raised with love and Betty came to consider her cousins as her brothers and sisters. During school holidays, Betty and her brothers would spend time in Mount Morgan and Boulder Creek with their uncle producing wonderful memories which she cherished all her life. As a teenager, Betty developed a love of singing which continued all her life. She sang on Rockhampton Radio 4RO and in the 1960s, she was the front singer in bands at Mount Morgan, including the Possumvale Rhythm Ratbags which included George Clanfield, Bill Nolan and Jacko Sigvart. In later years, she often sang at functions with her friend and relative, Freda McDougall. In 1952, she married Frank Ware in Mount Morgan. She embraced Frank’s family, and they reciprocated with love and inclusion. She remained close to Frank’s sisters and nieces throughout her life. The couple settled into married life in Mount Morgan and had two children, Dennis and Shayne. In Page 12
While Frank worked on the properties, Betty became carer of the aged property owners. She was generous with her care, making herself available seven days a week to ensure they maintained a dignified life.
a stage play, activities requiring period dress, or a ride on the back of a camel.
Frank passed away in 2016 and Betty spent the final years of her life at Carinity’s Summit Cottages. She passed away suddenly on 5 April 2022. She was 88 years old.
Even so, Betty found time to participate in the community and support community events, offering volunteering for fundraising activities and catering for social gatherings. She constantly demonstrated her social responsibility and was always passionate about assisting in community to make life better for others. She was a Show Judge for cooking and flowers and was a member of numerous committees, including Wowan Ambulance Committee, Wowan RSL, and Mount Morgan Show Society. She was a founding member of the Dee River Hack and Pony Club in the 1960s and she was asked to officially open the Mount Morgan Show in 2017.
STUDENTS REMEMBER
Early in their retirement, while she and Frank were living in Brisbane, she worked tirelessly as a volunteer at the nearest St Vinnies Shop. The couple returned to life in Mount Morgan in 2007. Betty was a wonderful cook and avid gardener, but it was never enough to keep her occupied. She needed to be doing things that served the community. She was a member of Dee River Oldies and was always available to make cakes and dampers when they were required for activities. She liked to be part of fun activities and was always keen to participate in community events whether it be MOUNT MORGAN ARGUS

DEE RIVER OLDIES With Easter and Anzac days now behind us members are looking forward to the Golden Mount Festival Gold Rush celebrations on the Labour Day weekend. Catching up with visitors who once called Mount Morgan home is always something special. With the market stalls, gold digs, parade and running the cutter, fireworks, and other events it is always fun. The next bus trip for Dee River Oldies members leaves the bus stop in Morgan Street, Mount Morgan at 8.30am on Wednesday, 11 May 2022. We will travel to Cockscomb Veteran’s Retreat near Cawarral, where we will have morning tea and get a chance to see what is there. Then, we go on to Keppel Sands, where we will have lunch at the hotel. To secure your seat, please pay the $50 at our next morning tea on Wednesday, 27 April 2022 at St Mary’s Hall in Gordon Street. The $50 covers morning tea, lunch and the bus trip. You will need to buy your own drinks at lunch. Check out ‘Save the Date’ on the back page of the Argus for meeting and morning tea dates. Membership forms need to be completed. There is no cost for membership.

THE ORANGE DOT By Larry at Fox Video
Movie Review THE LUMINARIES A luminary of course is a source of light. The sun and moon are often referred to as luminaries. In our wonderfully rich English language, a luminary can also be an eminent or influential person, a mentor, teacher, guide or leader. Luminaries can also be sources of enlightenment, such as astrology is for its believers, and astrology plays a key part in our story today. New Zealand had been through troubled and turbulent times during the first half of the nineteenth century. For thirty years (1807-1837) The Musket Wars raged throughout the islands with traditional intertribal Maori wars escalating exponentially as many and various tribes armed themselves with firearms instead of just the traditional weapons of wood and stone. Disputes, often ancient as well as new, were now being addressed with arsenals of muskets that were lethal from a distance, and with devastating results. Up to 40,000 Maori were killed by their brothers, cousins and kinsmen during this period. Just a few years after the musket wars wound down came the eruption of The New Zealand
Wars (1845 - 1872), bringing another twenty-seven years of strife, heartache and trauma to The Land of the Long White Cloud. This time the protagonists were the NZ colonial government along with their Maori allies on the one side, against Maori and Maori-allied settlers on the other. It began with localized conflicts over disputed land purchases and escalated dramatically from there. Ultimately in 1864 and around 14,000 troops were engaged in the war on the side of the government. Into this turmoil sail our two innocent, unwitting players, fresh off a boat from England. As if there wasn’t already enough excitement and activity for one small country, gold had been discovered and the rush was on. Anna (Eve Hewson) has travelled to New Zealand to forge a new life. On the very last day of her journey in 1865 she has a romantic encounter with the radiant Emery Staines (Himesh Patel) and they instantly form a bond that goes way beyond mere affinity, the connection between them is powerful and magical. Her heart is filled with wonderful expectations but
scheming fortune teller and madam Lydia (Eva Green) has other ideas for the lovely Anna and plots to keep the two young lovers apart. Anna’s fortunes begin to fail. Drawn into Lydia’s world of blackmail, opium, gold, false identity and fraud, she is ultimately framed for murder and forced to fight for her life. Then Emery vanishes without a trace. Anna is alone... Love, magic, murder and revenge on the wild west coast of New Zealand’s South Island at the height of an insane gold rush, THE LUMINARIES will transport you to a fascinating time in a beautiful yet chaotic place. Also featuring the always terrific (and a personal favourite) giant of Hollywood as well as Oz and NZ cinema, New Zealander Marton Csokas, THE LUMINARIES is rated M for ‘mature themes, violence, drug use and coarse language’. Immerse yourself in an epic adventure in a new world... THE LUMINARIES - loved it!
FESTIVAL RECEIVES RRC FUNDING The Golden Mount Festival has received a $10,000 boost from the Rockhampton Regional Council’s Major Sponsorship Program. Festival President, Mr Gavin Finch, said the funding received was extremely welcome. “There hasn’t been a festival since 2019 and every donation is essential to the continuation of Page 14
this 43-year old tradition,” he said. Mr Finch said while it was a shame that the previous two festivals were postponed due to the Covid pandemic, it was a fitting year for the festival to start again. “Mount Morgan celebrates it’s 140th birthday this year,” he said. “In 10 years, the town will celebrate its 150th birthday and every MOUNT MORGAN ARGUS
contribution now helps to ensure that the Golden Mount Festival will endure to be at the centre of the town’s sesquicentenary celebrations,” he said. Mr Finch said he would like to thank the Council for supporting this very important event for Mount Morgan.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Do you find yourself driven to lend a hand in times of crisis? Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is seeking enthusiastic and dedicated people of all ages and genders to join our dynamic teams. QFES comprises the Fire and Rescue Service, State Emergency Service and Rural Fire Service. Each service plays a crucial role in serving and protecting their communities and surrounding areas. Positions available include both voluntary and paid roles. Fire and Rescue Service Auxiliary firefighters are fully trained firefighters employed in a paid, on-call capacity. They respond to structural and grass fires, road crash rescues, ambulance assists, community safety and fire education and more. Once the necessary training has been completed and skills acquired, auxiliaries are encouraged to continue professional development and contribute to the leadership and camaraderie that firefighters are known for.
State Emergency Service
Rural Fire Service
The State Emergency Service (SES) is a volunteer organisation. SES volunteers are pillars in their communities, filling operational and non-operational roles that are vital to disaster response and emergency management. Training is ongoing across all roles. Non-operational roles include community engagement, administration and operational support. Operational roles consist of qualified first aid, chainsaw operations, temporary repairs to homes, vertical rescue, flood boat evacuation and rescue. SES also assist the Police with searches for missing persons and crime scene/forensic searches.
With around 30,000 dedicated volunteers, the Rural Fire Service (RFS) provides fire services across 93% of Queensland. Rural Fire Brigades operate in areas not covered by the Fire and Rescue Service and help develop resilient communities in the face of fire and natural disasters. Many volunteer roles are available, including firefighting, incident management, community education, communications, catering and administration.
QFES volunteers and staff are essential members of the Queensland community and when called upon, go above and beyond the line of duty. From all walks of life, all are united in keeping Queensland safe. If you are interested in learning unique and valuable skills, building your personal and professional network and contributing to a rewarding career, we want to hear from you.
Have you got what it takes?
Scan the QR code or visit www.qfes.qld.gov.au/careers-and-volunteering to find out more.
