Every placement begins on a Monday and ends on a Friday. Students have the option of arriving the Friday evening before their placement begins. You will be given a welcome bundle with all the information you will need for your stay. Elective placements will differ greatly for each student and specialty. Most placements will entail working shifts in departments, shadowing staff members, and attending teaching sessions, amongst other activities. The entire program is geared to provide elective students the hands-on experience they need to advance their medical study.

The University of Cambridge was founded in 1209, making it the second-oldest university in the English-speaking world and the world’s fourth-oldest surviving university. Medical teaching at the University of Cambridge can be traced back to 1540 when Dr John Blyth was endowed the University’s first Professorship of Physic by Henry VIII. Cambridge has been in the spotlight since the first direct measurement of blood pressure, as well as the unravelling of the complexity of DNA and the discovery of monoclonal antibodies. It is now one of the best University teaching hospitals in the UK, having an international reputation based soundly on treatment, teaching and research.
