EXCHANGES
It is with great honour that the SCOPRE team presents its very first annual MMSA Exchanges Booklet for 2020-2021. This would not have been possible were it not for the dedication of the entire SCOPRE-Out team, SCOPRE-In team and Julia Woods who designed the entire booklet.
The process of making all these exchanges available to the MMSA student body was very challenging and was made more complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic but seeing all this come to fruition fills us with great pride. Exchanges have a long history within our organisation and for many years they have provided students with new friends, family, knowledge and experience. Exchanges are truly the perfect opportunity to broaden one’s horizon and learn so much more about being independent and working with people from all around the world. There is no better opportunity to travel and learn: exploring the globe and your inner self.
Moreover, every medical association abroad organises some sort of social programme for its incoming exchange students. This social programme provides all travelling students with the chance to sightsee, make new friends, go to parties and much more. That being said, there’s nothing stopping you from creating your own social programme with the friends you make!
Above all else, an exchange is the perfect opportunity to train to become a better doctor. Whether you’re interested in research, medicine, surgery or public health, there’s an exchange for you. Exchanges are often more handson than opportunities here at home and medical associations abroad will often provide students with Upon-Arrival Training or other lectures to further increase training. Truly, participating in an exchange is a must for any hopeful doctor.
Naturally, all of this comes at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has raised a large amount of uncertainty surrounding so many of our daily activities. That being said, we remain determined to deliver quality exchanges to our students and we hope to be able to help any students with any queries or worries they may be having pertaining to exchanges and their travels.

So you’re thinking about going on an exchange? The first thing you need to know is that exchanges are divided into SCOPE (Standing Committee of Professional Exchanges), SCORE (Standing Committee of Research Exchanges) and SCOPH (Standing committee of Public Health) exchanges. Like last year, we will also be offering the Stirling elective as part of our programme (See UK for more info on Stirling electives).
All the above opportunities are allocated to students depending on how many MMSA points they have at the time of the Final Points Allocation. The more points a student has, the more likely they are to be awarded the top exchange of choice. Points are allocated to students depending on how involved they are in the MMSA according to the MMSA Points protocol. The final points allocation will be out on November 30th and the applications for exchanges will then open on the 1st of December. Students will be able to rank their top 10 exchange destinations. You can apply either by yourself or with one or more students. Exchanges are preferably awarded to those who have more MMSA Points. If you choose to apply with a friend, then the average of your points will be taken for your application. That being said, last year many exchanges were not taken up so you have nothing to lose by applying! Chances are you’ll still get something even if you don’t have many points! Applications will then close on the 9th of December and the allocation of exchanges will be posted on the 10th. If there are more places left afterwards, there may be a second and even third call. Those who are allocated an exchange will then attend a pre-departure training session with information on how to finalise a proper application for the exchange.
Once you are allocated a country for an exchange, you will be guided to send a proper application through the IFMSA website where you’ll be able to select your preferred cities and projects/departments.
For exchanges there are 2 fees: €185

Research exchanges allow students to choose a particular research topic and work alongside a research team on said project. Research varies from lab work with clinical experience to working with data and so much more. In some countries, students may also have the opportunity to present or publish their work. Whilst preclinical students are more likely to apply for SCORE exchanges, clinical students can also equally benefit from these exchanges! Click here for the list of projects
scoph Like research exchanges, students participating in SCOPH exchanges will pick an internship project and do a mixture of research and clinical work on an aspect of public health. SCOPH exchanges are unique opportunities to be exposed to more endemic problems as well as deal with more personal public health issues.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has affected nations all over the world. Through all of this, the MMSA has put measures into place that prioritise student safety whilst ensuring our campaigns and even exchanges can keep going. That being said, due to the pandemic, exchanges in certain countries (namely Canada and the UK) could not be planned as normal and as such, Malta was unable to sign contracts with them for this year. Stirling electives in the UK have not been affected though.
As the exchanges team, we remain cautiously optimistic and hope that we’ll still be able to offer the student body quality exchanges for the Summer of 2021. Should any further exchanges be cancelled, all students affected will receive a ₏185 refund.

ACADEMIC & SOCIAL PROGRAMMES The healthcare system is very highly rated. Doctors speak fluent English and German is not required for most placements (a comprehensive list detailing this is available on the IFMSA Exchange Conditions). AMSA Austria has just introduced an educational programme on top of your hospital placements, including lectures and anatomy lab tours. All of this points towards a very worthwhile educational experience. Although a national social programme is on offer, previous students have claimed that this was not the case, with only a handful of local activities provided. With that being said, Austria’s

SLOVENIA SCOPE x3 July/August Clinical students only SCORE x2 July Ljubljana and Maribor
ABOUT Slovenia, located in central Europe, is a relatively small country rich with culture. With a varied set of landscapes, in Ljubljana you are only a couple of hours away from mountains, forests and the sea. It is bordered by Italy, Austria, Hungary, Croatia and the Adriatic Sea and it is extremely easy to travel to any of these countries by train or by bus. Slovenia’s warm climate in the Summer means it’s fairly commonplace to see so many people outside enjoying the sun and a beer in the parks or squares. As such, whether you’re the history type, the hiking type or just someone looking for an allround exciting experience, an exchange in Slovenia has something for everyone!

Social Programme for electives is generally made by the incoming students themselves although some basic activities may be organised by the University or local students.
Pricing for the Stirling elective works differently from regular exchanges. While the 15 euro application fee will be charged, if a student is awarded this elective, their 185 euro exchange fee will be refunded. The elective, including all teaching, is entirely free of charge, although there is a
£ 25 admin fee. This elective is only
for Maltese students (anyone without a Maltese passport will need to apply via Edinburgh or Glasgow Universities at a cost of about
£ 100 per week). If a student wishes they can book special accommodation for the elective (single room) which is provided at a cost (about
£ 10 to £ 15 per day). This will be at the doctors'
quarters at a neighbouring hospital. The undergraduate office will organise this.

The main difference is that when you apply for an elective, your country, university and department are guaranteed. To apply for an elective, in most cases, you must apply through the hospital/ university itself not through the MMSA or this booklet. The only exception is the Stirling elective (see UK). While exchanges and the Stirling elective are awarded based on points, most electives are awarded based on other criteria mainly your CV and academics.
