It is with great honour that the SCOPRE team presents the third edition of its annual MMSA Exchanges Booklet for 2022-2023. Exchanges have a long history within our organisation and for many years they have provided students with new friends, family, knowledge and experience. Exchanges are truly the perfect opportunity to broaden one’s horizons and learn so much more about being independent and working with people from around the world. There is no better opportunity to travel and learn!

Every medical association abroad organises a social program for its incoming students. This includes parties, nights out and trips around the country! This means that every exchange is as fun as it is educational. That being said, there is nothing stopping you from creating your own social program with the friends you make!

Above all else, an exchange is the perfect opportunity to become a better doctor. Whether your interest is research, medicine, surgery or public health there is an exchange for you. Many exchanges provide more hands-on experience than is provided locally, and student organisations organise training and other opportunities to compliment this.

With the troubles of covid mostly behind us, we are looking forward to a fantastic exchange season. That being said some issues may still come up, but me and the exchange team are dedicated to solve whatever comes up!

So you’re thinking about going on an exchange? The first thing you need to know is that exchanges are divided into SCOPE (Standing Committee of Professional Exchanges), SCORE (Standing Committee of Research Exchanges) and SCOPH (Standing committee of Public Health) exchanges. Like last year, we will also be offering the Stirling elective as part of our program (See UK for more info on Stirling electives)

All the above opportunities are allocated to students depending on how many MMSA points they have at the time of the Final Points Ranking. The more points a student has, the more likely they are to be awarded the top exchange of choice. Points are allocated to students depending on how involved they are in MMSA according to the MMSA Points Protocol The final points ranking and applications for exchanges will be opened on the 26th of November. Students will be able to rank their top 10 exchange destinations. You can apply either by yourself or with one or more students (maximum of 2 applications, 1 solo and 1 group). Exchanges are preferably awarded to those who have more MMSA Points. In a group application, an average of the points is taken. You may still apply for an exchange even with few points! Last year some exchanges remained open after the first call, after which a second call is opened with the same rules Applications will close on the 3rd of December, and allocation of exchanges will be released on December 9th. After which we will guide you on the application process and you will be able to choose your preferred cities and projects/departments.

For exchanges there are 2 fees:

Bilateral fee Paid when applying for an exchange

€285 exchange fee includes the exchange itself, accommodation and one meal per weekday or the pocket money equivalent. Often includes a basic social programme This is refundable if the student is not awarded an exchange, or if the exchange is cancelled due to extraordinary circumstances or by the hosting country.

€15 application fee (non refundable) needed for MMSA to keep exchanges going

Unilateral fee

This is variable depending on the country hosting the unilateral exchange. This money goes to the hosting country and not to MMSA. Should you be awarded a unilateral exchange, MMSA will refund the €285 euros of the bilateral fee.

Clinical exchanges giving students the opportunity to attend attachments with consultants abroad Sometimes, tutorials and one on one sessions are also offered. Students are encouraged to ask questions and to try participate wherever they can. While most SCOPE exchanges are reserved for clinical students only (3rd year and up), there are a few SCOPE opportunities for pre clinical students too Students will be able to select their preferred departments for the exchange.

Research exchanges allow students to choose a particular research topic and work alongside a research team on said project. Research varies from lab work with clinical experience to working with data and so much more. In some countries, students may also have the opportunity to present or publish their work Whilst pre clinical students are more likely to apply for SCORE exchanges, clinical students can also equally benefit from these exchanges!

Like research exchanges, students participating in SCOPH exchanges will pick an internship project and do a mixture of research and clinical work on an aspect of public health. SCOPH exchanges are unique opportunities to be exposed to more endemic problems as well as deal with more personal public health issues

Belgium, a country in Western Europe known for medieval towns, Renaissance architecture and as headquarters of the European Union and NATO The country has distinctive regions including Dutch speaking Flanders to the north, French speaking Wallonia to the south and a German speaking community to the east. The bilingual capital, Brussels, has ornate guildhalls at Grand Place and elegant art nouveau buildings.

Belgium hosts some of the best music festivals in the world (including Tomorrowland, Rock Werchter and many more). It is world famous for its chocolate (in fact they claim to have the best chocolate in the world), waffles (that you definitely must try while you ’ re there), beer (there are over 1000 beers brewed here), and its national football team, the Red Devils.

Clerkship is 4 weeks long with students being expected to attend 5 days a week for 8 hours per day. There are no night shifts. There must be a minimum of 80% attendance and if one is unable to attend, the student must notify the supervisor beforehand. The social programme is very well organised with several activities being organised including pub crawls, festivals, BBQs, bar, and food tour, NFDP, parties, bowling, kayaking and more Social programmes are planned at the weekends to Ghent and Bruges, two medieval cities in the heart of Belgium and at least 2 activities each month with a guided tour and beer tasting.

Brazilians are some of the most welcoming people around the world. It is known for its diverse cuisine and culture, natural wonders and festivals, especially carnival!

Although Brazil has a good academic programme it is known to shine in its social programme. The social programme differs between the different committees and between the months. A National Social Program is provided to all the incomings for July & August It's called BEACH Project which stands for IFMSA Brazil's Exchange Assistance on Care and Hospitality Project. Students will also easily be able to organise their own trips around the country

SCOPE Student's Handbook and Evaluation Form required. 98% of Brazilians speak Portuguese and so knowing some basic Portuguese would be of great help when it comes to dealing with patients or locals in general, especially considering that only 2% of the population speak English.

The students must be aware that proper clothing is utterly necessary for the hospital based activities Our national biosecurity standards demand: trousers, closed shoes, long sleeved white coat, no earrings and accessories, long hair must be tied up. Bring your own white coat and stethoscope. No students from past exchanges have ever reported feeling unsafe while on exchange in Brazil

The main emergency numbers used in Brazil are 112 (universal emergency Number), 190 (Military Police), 192 (Ambulance), 193 (Firefighters) and 199 (civil defence). It is highly suggested to get travel insurance when visiting Brazil

Bulgaria is situated in the heart of the Balkan peninsula found at the crossroad between Europe and Asia. The country is rich in tourist sights, historical artifacts and diverse landscapes ranging from soul stirring mountain peaks to lazy seaside towns with golden beaches, whilst the cities hum with nightlife and art. The social programme in Bulgaria is divided into two main groups, the local and national. The local one mainly consists of events in the city and nearby such as national food and drink party, hiking in Vitosha, discos, free walking tours etc In previous years, the national social program consisted of 3 weekends which will include the 3 biggest cities Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna In this way, the incomings can see the best of the country.

Nestled in the center of Europe, the Czech Republic (also known by its short name Czechia) is a country steeped in history It’s a land dotted with castles, medieval towns, beautiful mountains, ancient ruins and world class wineries. Every year, more and more people visit this wondrous place but, sadly, they mostly stick to the capital, Prague, leaving the rest of the country unvisited. However, once you escape that beautiful (but crowded) city, you’ll find an inexpensive country with some of the most striking and rugged landscapes in Europe

The Czech Healthcare System is noted for the very good quality of its medical services to its citizens Healthcare is free for Czech citizens It is provided through compulsory contributions to a state approved insurance fund. Recently there has been a rapid growth of high quality private healthcare facilities, equipped to the highest standards, offering world class care at a fraction of the price paid in Western Europe.

The social program is guaranteed during August and it’s organized by each Local Committee During August, they also organize their National Social Program Previous students have said that it was a very hands on experience, however not everyone there spoke English fluently

Finland, the land of a thousand lakes and forests. Take in a deep breath of the cleanest air in the world while gazing upon the outstanding lakeside vistas and munching on a Karjalanpiirakka Finland is known to be the happiest country in the world, which is no surprise as it is home to the breathtaking Northern Lights (can start being seen from late August onwards unfortunately) It is an incredible destination for outdoorsy travelers and adventure lovers.

During July, the social program is organized by the local officers and contact persons There will also be a National Social Program which is adventurous and helps immerse students in the outstanding Finnish nature During weekends, all of the incoming students from the different cities gather together and organize activities between them.

Don’t forget your night mask as due to Finland being so far north, there are approx 18 hours of daylight and so getting your sleep may be a bit hard until you adjust.

Finnish people are polite but not majorly interested in endless chit chat and talking to strangers

Tipping is not compulsory but is appreciated.

Don’t forget to pack warm clothes as it can get quite cold at night. You can pick wild berries and mushrooms, but not someone ’ s apples or plums You can also go canoeing and camping, but not too close to someone ’

house.

Finland is known to be very safe.

Finland has a strong drinking culture People over 18 can only drink alcohol of up to 22%, while those older than 20 can buy alcoholic drinks of any kind from an Alko, as beers and ciders are openly sold in supermarkets. 112 is the emergency number in Finland

Whilst French clinical exchanges are meant to be observational analysis, however, some doctors may encourage students to carry out and assist in various tests and examinations on patients. Previous students have had the opportunity to gain greater knowledge of how to take a history. Some of the hosting committees may provide interesting educational activities which include suturing skills and dissection sessions, as well as lectures on CPR and emergency sessions. Whilst the social program varies in every city, the French social programs are generally well renown often offering cheap prices for various sightseeing trips, provide National Food and Drink Party and BBQs During weekends, students will visit other cities including Paris and its surroundings including Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Notre Dame Cathedral amongst others A National Social Program is organised once or twice during summer

Hungary’s stunning architecture, deep tradition, world famous thermal spas and Europe’s most exciting capital after dark are sure to impress. With everything from Roman ruins, medieval townhouses to baroque churches, Hungary’s diverse history is plain to see

If partying is more your style, Budapest is practically Europe’s nightlife capital. From street markets to popular nightclubs, the city nightlife is a great example of how Hungarians like to have fun while taking a break from their everyday lives in the city. When done with that, why not relax? The country is teeming with thermal water springs, more than 1300, with 123 in Budapest alone.

To top it all off, Hungarian cuisine remains the most sophisticated style of cooking in Europe and has some of the most famous wines, so it’s sure to please all of the foodies out there! Its central location also means that travel to other countries is super easy

Hungarian universities put a huge focus on research life, so the Research Exchange program is very popular. If you would like to attend and experience a research exchange, you should definitely consider Hungary, as the departments consist of modern, well equipped laboratories with professional and friendly tutors. Students are expected to attend 6 hours per day, 5 days a week for 4 weeks.

Hungary offers a colorful social program during the summer months, including sightseeing tours, weekend trips around Hungary, parties etc The local officers organize many programs from which you can choose.

It’s hard to beat the range of experiences that Indonesia has to offer, being made up of over 17,000 diverse islands. Indonesia is a land of so many cultures, people, animals, customs, plants, sights, art and food, that it defies homogenization The people are as radically different from each other as the variety of landscapes you’ll see. The great thing about adventure in Indonesia is that it happens when you least expect it. Watch an orangutan swing through the trees whilst taking a surfing break on a remote island, or hanging onto the back of a scooter anything can happen in this intoxicating land.

Students are expected to attend attachments for approximately 8 hours a day, 5 days a week for 4 weeks Should they wish to do so, students are also given the possibility to experience an attachment during a night shift. Hospital placements in Indonesia are truly unique, giving students the opportunity to experience many tropical medicine cases and diseases that may only be seen in Indonesia. Being very large, the social program in Indonesia is highly dependent on the LC of the allocated city. That being said, it is near to impossible for you to run out of things to do, places to see and people to meet in Indonesia! The abundance of culture, mountains, temples and beaches, will truly keep your senses aroused

The social program has something planned for everyday as their CP teams believe that this is the best way to discover Lithuania and enjoy the exchange to the full. Romania is sure to be a treat for the eyes with rugged stone churches and monasteries that dot a pristine landscape of rocky mountains and rolling hills, and Transylvanian towns have stepped out of time. The Carpathian Mountains draw a wide arc through the centre of the country, leaving a swath of exposed rocky peaks surrounded by forests, while Europe’s second longest river, the Danube, marks Romania’s southern border with Bulgaria. In general, most SCOPE exchanges that allow pre clinical students will take into consideration if a student is pre clinical or not. While it’s generally recommended for pre clinical students to attend SCORE exchanges, there’s nothing stopping pre clinical students from applying and students generally report learning a lot at their exchanges anyways. Long story short, if you’re passionate about a particular SCOPE exchange, you still stand to gain a lot by applying!

Exchanges are month long clinical or research experiences organised by the MMSA through the IFMSA database In reality, both tend to offer very similar experiences though in a few instances, some students have said that their elective was a little more hands on The main difference is that when you apply for an elective, your country, university and department are guaranteed

No, unfortunately your favourite city is not completely guaranteed Once you’ve been allocated an exchange, you’ll be told how to finalise your application, select your favourite cities and the sooner you do this, the more likely you are to be awarded the city of your choice That being said, you’re usually asked to rank cities so if you don’t get your first preference, you’re usually able to get your second or third preference

The date by when you know your city and department/project varies between countries with some countries sending you all the information very early The latest a country can notify you of your exchange details is 8 weeks prior to the start of the exchange but this does not commonly occur

When an applicant is selected for an Exchange, s/he will have 25% of their points deducted for the first exchange, 30% for the second exchange and 35% for the third exchange from the final points released before the country allocation Points are deducted even if the person doesn’t go on the exchange without a valid reason

The COVID 19 pandemic has affected all SC’s within the MMSA in an unprecedented way Currently the effect this will have on the next exchange season is not very predictable, but we think (and hope) that by July, exchanges will be able to go on as normal, with some adjustments to ensure student safety.

That being said, we highly encourage students to apply from now to make sure that they have their place reserved At the end of the day, there’s nothing to lose by applying! As we get closer to July, we will keep you updated regularly and ensure that student safety is being prioritised always

Yes you can! You can ask to be in the same city even if one of you is SCOPE and the other SCORE or SCOPH Just make sure to speak to the exchanges out officer, Conor Shaw, about this as soon as you are accepted so a formal request can be made to the other country.

For all countries where there is 1 SCOPE and 1 SCORE or 1 SCOPH, there is already an agreement for the students to attend in the same city Accommodation may not always be the same though!

The exact start of the exchange date varies between countries, but most exchanges start on the 1st Monday of the month. Exchanges generally last 20 working days (weekdays only) and you have to attend 80% of this so 16 days for the certificate to be awarded (although arrangements can be made in certain cases). As such, if you start a little late, there’s nothing to worry about and arrangements can usually be made.

Yes! Going on an exchange alone can seem daunting but you are much more likely to make new friends and meet new people like that! Rest assured, as soon as you land in the country, you’ll find so many other exchange students from all around the world, just as willing to make friends as you are!

When an exchange’s months are marked as ‘July/August’ this means that the student is able to choose to attend in either July or August.

If there is 2 July / 1 August exchange, then 3 students can go on the exchange, however, 2 in July and 1 in August.

Yes! Every year a number of exchanges are awarded to first years. You don’t need to have thousands of points to get an exchange.
