College of Med on standby; twinning plan w/ UNP cancelled by: Patrick Jan R. Reyes

SIRMATA

After the country’s technical panel for medical education disapproved the twinning arrangement of MMSU and University of Northern Philippines (UNP), MMSU had to independently submit its application documents, putting the opening of the College of Medicine (COM) on standby in the meantime. The original plan of partnership with UNP is a move of SUCs in the region to have a regional university for medical education. Since it was not approved by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) panel headed by Dr. Alfredo Reyes, MMSU is now the lone SUC applying for the authority to operate. “We are still hopeful about that because we just lacked

USC to purchase 2 e-jeeps by: Irene Ulit

Due to the growing population of MMSU and the need for more eco-friendly transportation systems on campus, the current University Student Council (USC) pursued the plan of the previous council to purchase two additional e-jeepneys. “The e-jeepneys will continually promote environmental awareness and protection and will be

a great help in lessening the financial burdens of students with its lower fare charge,” said former USC President, Addielou Fidelfio Abad, who endorsed the project during his term. Allan Josef M. In 2012, the university accepted 39 scholars from the province under the Student’s GrantsIn-Aid Program (SGP-PA), the forerunner of the ESGP-PA. The significant increase of scholars aligns with the national government's aim of increasing the number of graduates in higher education. Implementing guidelines of the ESGP-PA are set in Joint Memorandum Circular 20141, which states that the national government shall “provide financial benefits and make it as a longterm instrument and commitment to break the vicious poverty cycle afflicting the poor but deserving Filipino youth and their families.” >Turn to page 2

The university’s enrolment for this academic year posted a significant increase of 6.12 percent, records from the Office of the Registrar show. From last year’s 13,700, this year’s enrolment rose to 14, 539. “The sharp increase in the number of enrollees was caused by the accommodation of 700 students under the Expanded Students’ Grants-In-Aid Program (ESGP-PA) for Poverty Alleviation Scholarship of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) that provides scholarships to students who belong to underprivileged families,” Ms. Felina J. Isaac, university registrar said. Posting the highest percentage of increase are the College of Aquatic Sciences and Applied Technology (CASAT) and the College of Agriculture, Food, and Sustainable Development (CAFSD), with 63.87 percent and 40.72 percent, respectively. President Miriam E. Pascua stressed that the university is ready to address problems that will arise out of the full implementation of K to 12 program, which include a sharp enrolment drop and the possible retrenchment of some teachers due to the standards of the new curriculum, as well as CHED requirements.

As per CHED Memorandum Order (CMO) No. 40, s. 2008, “all faculty members of higher education institutions (HEIs) must have at least a master's degree in line with their specialization.” Although some faculty are only bachelor's degree holders, >Turn to page 4
