Starting university Finding your feet, making new friends, managing your own money, time and space; learning to find and express your own personality and voice; exploring a subject you care passionately about in great depth, and setting you firmly on your chosen professional career path for life. These continue to be the fundamental reasons for going to university. We’ve been welcoming new students to MMU for decades, and each year we welcome thousands of new students from across the UK and around the world. We aim to ensure that you can quickly adapt and flourish in your new environment. From the moment you arrive at MMU with the welcome reps helping you to move in, through the freshers’ welcome week, first lectures, tutorial, location orientation and ensuring that you know where everything is, it is our job to help and support you. Friends that you make at university, whether in halls or from your course and studies, will often become friends for life. We see and welcome many reunions of familiar faces over the years.

There are many ways of making new friends at MMU...

Welcome Week This programme is especially designed to give you loads of opportunities to meet new people, no matter how or where you study.

Clubs and Societies Over 100 clubs and societies to choose from. Visit theunionmmu.org/your-opportunities to see what’s on offer.

On your course Everyone’s in the same boat, so chat to everyone and those sitting next to you in lectures and seminars… you might meet your best friend!

Accommodation Our reps will help you move and settle into halls, but it’s also important to spend time chatting and getting to know your new flatmates.

What can I expect from my first year at MMU? You can expect a lot from your first year at MMU: ÃÃ You will learn how to become independent, managing your time and money and developing your personal skills and confidence.

“You may, at first, feel like a fish out of water but don’t worry, it will all soon make sense!” Jen Adamson, Education Officer The Union

ÃÃ You will need to become adept at learning for yourself, developing your personal study and reading skills, as well as your ability to express your thoughts and opinions on your chosen subject area. ÃÃ You will get through a lot of academic work, in lectures, seminars and tutorials, as well as assignments and group exercises. ÃÃ Becoming an independent learner and thinker in your first year, along with getting on with people from all walks of life, will give you the skills and confidence to take you into your chosen career.

Above all, enjoy it! Take advantage of the time and many opportunities available to you

8

“Make a really good playlist full of music that means a lot to you; when I first moved in I heard my new flatmate playing The Beatles full blast from their room, before I even met the person I knew I’d get along with them!” Sarah-Beth Cooper, Community Officer The Union

facebook.com/welcomemmu

What does MMU expect from its students in the first year? Attending classes

Academic writing

University is very different from school or college; whilst you will be taught and supported by academics with specialist knowledge, you will need to attend every lecture, seminar and tutorial to get the best from your studies. We have introduced a digital attendance monitoring system; we expect our students to show up on time, show respect to fellow students and to the academics who are teaching them.

You will need to read widely and research a range of views for your work; proper referencing of information sources is essential otherwise you could unintentionally plagiarise someone else’s work or ideas. The Harvard Referencing System is widely used at MMU, but not by all subjects so check with your department which referencing system you should use. Referencing workshops will be organised by your student support officer.

Independent learning For most students, the work you do outside lectures, tutorials and seminars requires a lot of your time. It is essential to do further reading and research beyond core texts and lecture notes. This helps you to gain an indepth understanding of your course content, and will help you to get the best results in your assignments and exams. Independent learning also includes group work and assignments with other students, which helps you to develop your communication and interpersonal skills.

Reading lists Most courses will have extensive reading lists and suggested information sources to help you to explore the subject matter in depth. You can learn effective reading and note-taking strategies to help you to get the most out of the texts you use, but more importantly, ensure you dedicate enough time to doing it in order to get the best results.

@theunionmmu

mmu.ac.uk/ studentsupportofficers libguides.mmu.ac.uk/ refguide Assignments and deadlines The first assignment is a key milestone in your first year at university. It’s important to know that deadlines are fixed, so give yourself enough time to do the reading and research, complete your assignment and check it thoroughly before you hand it in. Once it has been marked, make sure you take on board the feedback you receive for your next assignment and if anything is unclear, always ask your lecturers for more information.

Study support We have created a strong student support service; if you feel anxious or unsure of something then talk to your personal academic tutor or get support from the many student services that we provide. This covers our online resource ‘skills online’ which provides help with time management, assignments, working in groups, writing, giving presentations, reading and note-taking.

9

Getting started: the essentials In addition to academic support, we provide a huge range of personal and pastoral support that you may need while you are a student. We are renowned as a very friendly university, and we take a personal interest in making sure that you are happy here.

Enrolment and ID card collection

Your MMU ID and password

Collecting your MMU student ID card, and having it scanned, completes your enrolment with the University. You must carry your ID card with you at all times on campus; it will allow you access to:

As soon as you become eligible to enrol (usually after exam results are confirmed) we will set up an MMU email account for you.

ÃÃ the library

You will need your MMU login to access your account and access the University systems, on and off campus:

ÃÃ a range of computer-based resources ÃÃ university buildings and facilities

mmu.ac.uk/students

ÃÃ your ID number is the 8 digit MMU ID number included on your confirmation letter ÃÃ your initial password is based on your date of birth. For example, if you were born on 23 July 1988, your initial password would be 23Jul88 If you need any support, look out for IT Services Connect and Protect Clinics, and our IT Rovers who are fellow students trained to help you with the most common IT queries, recognisable by their blue ‘Ask me for help’ t-shirts.

Library services

Accommodation

In your first few weeks at MMU, your tutor will organise a short session led by a member of library staff who will introduce the basic services including how to log into the IT network, and print documents.

If you haven’t sorted your accommodation yet, get in touch with our Residential Services.

Do make sure you attend this session as it will show you how to access sources of quality information that are relevant to your course. Both libraries have helpdesks that can be contacted by phone, email or in person. Opportunities will arise later in your course to find out how to use more specialised resources for your research through the library’s InfoSkills programmes. These are arranged with the library via tutors on behalf of groups of students.

If you’re a local student studying in Manchester and you would prefer to live in University Halls you can apply via our ‘commuters’ waiting list’ which is now open. If you live locally and can commute from home but don’t have a contract in privately-owned halls, you can apply for a cancellation place in University Halls. If you haven’t previously applied for halls you’ll need to submit an application at the web address below.

mmu.ac.uk/accommodation If you are a local student who has already applied (and been unsuccessful) for MMU accommodation you may be considered for the ‘commuters waiting list’. Please e-mail us now at accommodation@mmu.ac.uk with your name, contact details and name of the halls you wish to be considered for. Please don’t submit another online accommodation application.

Information can be communicated to relevant members of staff involved in your teaching and learning, so they are aware of the recommendations for disabilityrelated study support, and can help eligible students to apply for funding.

Counselling Service If you experience any personal problems or just feel that things are getting on top of you during your time at university, we can offer you the chance to talk to a professionally trained counsellor in confidence about any issue you may have – not just those related to your studies. Student financial support

Your advice centre

If you have applied for a maintenance loan from the Student Loans Company (SLC), this will be paid to you 3-4 working days after you have collected your ID card.

Free, independent and impartial, The Union’s advice centre is here to offer you help and support with just about any issue that may affect you during your time at MMU. From funding and benefits, to housing or issues on your course.

The University’s student financial support team is available to provide information and advice on financial matters throughout your time at university.

Support for care leavers MMU is committed to providing care leavers with as much support as possible to help them adapt to life at university. We recognise that you may not need, or want, any extra support, but it’s important to know what you are entitled to – especially if you are settling into a new course and a new place to live.

0161 247 6533 theunionmmu.org/ your-advice-centre

The support available includes a care leaver’s bursary (currently £1,000) that is paid to care leavers (as defined by the Leaving Care Act) who are under 25 years of age and a UK full-time undergraduate student. This is paid in addition to the financial support you may get from your Local Authority and from Student Finance England.

Student living: local and commuting students A large proportion of our new students choose not to live in halls, preferring to commute from within the region, often juggling personal, work, family and other commitments.

More than 30% of our students regularly commute, so it is especially important to take advantage of the many opportunities to connect and find out about all that’s on offer at MMU.

There are lots of activities you can get involved in during Welcome Week to socialise with students as part of your course induction programme and outside your course; check out pages 25 - 29 for more information.

In addition to Welcome Week, this year we have developed a range of taster activities which commuting and mature students may find particularly useful. These ‘Step In’ events are running from late August and through September. They are designed to give you an informal introduction to MMU and enable you to meet like-minded students.

International students International students are an important part of our student community, and here at MMU there are more than 130 nationalities represented.

The University understands that international students may sometimes require a little extra assistance; we have specialist teams to provide the right support, from application through to graduation and beyond. The MMU International Office have around 19 dedicated and experienced staff. For many of you, this will be the first time you’ve lived away from your home and family and we understand that the thought of spending time in a different country can be a little daunting. We recommend you read the Statement of Student Responsibilities under Tier 4 for Manchester Metropolitan University (mmu. ac.uk/studenthandbook/your_visa.pdf) when you enrol with us; this document includes our services and contact details.

Independent and mature students Around a third of our students are over the age of 21, including more than 5,000 who have children. This means that you’re probably coming to higher education after a period away from studying.

We know that juggling your family and social life, work commitments and study can be tough at times. Getting back into it can take a bit of getting used to, so why not take the opportunity to meet other people and share the experience. You may find our ‘Step In’ programme of events helpful.

“I chose to come to university as a mature student because I wanted to develop my career and provide a better future for my family.” Kelly Capin BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy

mmu.ac.uk/welcome-events

If you consider yourself a mature student and would like to connect, share tips and advice with people in similar situations, join the Burlington Society on Facebook. The Burlington Society is the social society for over-21s at universities in Greater Manchester. Made up of postgraduates, mature students, researchers, staff and alumni, it is the place to find out what it means to be a mature student in Manchester.

We are fully committed to creating a positive environment where everybody is treated with dignity and respect.

We have created a culture where: ÃÃ Fairness and inclusion are a fundamental part of everything that we do ÃÃ Diversity is valued and celebrated ÃÃ Good relations between diverse members of the University’s community are promoted ÃÃ People’s diverse abilities and backgrounds are recognised and are treated with respect ÃÃ Students from diverse backgrounds have an equal opportunity to benefit from higher education ÃÃ Students and staff from diverse backgrounds have an equal opportunity to reach their potential ÃÃ Benefits are maximised to the local communities that we serve. mmu.ac.uk/equality-and-diversity
