80 AMAZIN How do we celebrate an 80-year musical legacy? In Louisville, all we need to do is simply continue. We continue to be creative and responsive. We continue to be part of an exciting and vibrant community. We continue performing both massive epics and intimately tender works of music. Doing so, we celebrate the origins of our orchestra in the best way possible – by faithfully and enthusiastically carrying its founding ideals into the future. There’s no doubt that 1937 was a tough year for Louisville. Our city was devastated by “The Great Flood;” but it was also the year that our first music director, Robert Whitney, and other community leaders, laid an idealistic framework for the future. They believed that talented local musicians performing for their own citizens were important for a community. They believed that creativity begets creativity, and prosperity, and happiness.

2

1937 - NOW

NG YEARS Starting in 1948, we made an international sensation by commissioning and recording new works; looking forward at a time when others were satisfied with looking back. And we are inspired to do the same now. This season, our concerts offer a new vision of favorites and a few wild attempts at some very big ideas. Plus, we release our first recording in over 20 years. It’s a bold plan. I invite you to join us to create, share, and celebrate the 2017-2018 Season.
