Broadly speaking, museums are educational establishments, and they come alive when they are full of visitors and users. Directing the museum towards users, increasing its social use and working to offer a quality experience are today just some of the premises that museums have to use as guidelines. The educational, family and leisure-based programme that we are presenting is headed in this direction. Through art we can discover, experience, imagine, excite, learn, rethink and, why not, transgress. We invite you to do this by enjoying the collection and this range of proposals. Pepe Serra
Director of the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC)

Introduction educArt is the educational programme of the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya educArt is aimed at all kinds of people and all ages: schoolchildren and teachers, families and leisure associations, young people and adults.
excite, express, experience... discuss, deduce, discover... understand... comprehend, construct, create... A ct, accede... reflect, recognize, rethink... transgress, transcend, touch... Words that define the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya’s educational action and which are implicit in all the ideas that you will find in this programme. educArt is a proposal that situates and defines art as an essential part of people’s education, as a way of learning and raising our awareness. By observing a work of art we gain a whole new way of looking at the world. educArt can help us to construct these different ways of observing.

Adults The MNAC’s collection and the exhibitions the museum organizes are an inexhaustible source of inspiration for talking about art and, also, for creating art. With your visit, accompanied by our educators, you will discover the wealth of artistic material conserved by the MNAC or be able to study the temporary exhibitions in depth. You may also discover some of the less well-known parts of the museum or take in an exceptional view of Barcelona from the terraces of the Palau Nacional.

Museums have often been places to meet for those who wish to put into practice their creative skills. It has always been quite normal, and it still is, to find people in museums with their sketchbooks, doing drawings and sketches of the works of the great masters. We are reviving this tradition and at the same time learning more about artistic techniques, materials and methods of working.

Families and leisure There are all kinds of activities for families and leisure associations. They can either be guided by the museum educators or done autonomously. By programming these activities, the museum becomes a place where it is possible to develop the sensory, exploratory, manipulative, emotional and social skills of children, young people and the adults accompanying them.

This initiative is a pilot experience of training-action, arising from the IMEB Barcelona Council of Pedagogical Coordination’s Artistic Idioms Working Party. Its principal aim is to bring together cultural institutions and educational centres to reflect jointly on a common theme. In the first edition (2010-2011 academic year), the theme for reflection was The Genre and its Construction.

The aim of the inclusion programmes is to increase people’s access to the artistic patrimony. They are geared towards nonhabitual museum visitors or people who are unable to do so without needing assistance. n

The museum also hosts initiatives by other bodies with the aim of broadening participation and access to the artistic patrimony, as in the case of Susoespai. Creació i salut mental (www.susoespai.org).
Preparatory and training sessions The museum organizes working parties formed by the educators of the occupational centres, special education schools and the museum professionals, to share experiences that may contribute new knowledge to ways of approaching the artistic patrimony from the point of view of universal accessibility.
To help the hearing-impaired to enjoy the visit, the MNAC, together with the Fundación Orange, offers this group a free service. It is a PDA device in Sign Language in Catalan (CSL), Spanish (SSL) and International (ISL). Each explanatory video contains the subtitles in its language (in the case of International Sign Language, the subtitles are in English).
Commented visits The museum offers the possibility of making, on request, free commented visits for the users of the bodies that attend to people at risk of social exclusion.
The MNAC and the Barcelona Libraries network The project Una mà de contes del MNAC in the Barcelona Libraries (www.bcn.es/Biblioteques) positions the museum in the territory by opening it up to new forms of participation. The users of these cultural facilities can enjoy a different view of the museum’s collection through 20 audio-visual stories, and they can invent a story based on a scene inspired by a work of art.
