Arthritis MINIMIZE
winter’s impact ON YOUR PAIN
OU’RE NOT JUST imagining It - you really can feel winters chill in your bones, especially if you’ re among the 45 million Americans who have arthritis. Coping with this often debilitating disease can be even more challenging when the weather turns cold, making joints feel even mere stiff and painful. In fact, rheumatoid arthritis that first appears in the winter or spring may be more severe than arthritis that emerges in summer and fall, according to a French study of arthritis patients In addition to cold temperatures associated with winter, viruses — which are more prevalent during winter — may play a part in the increased severity of winter-onset arthritis, the study concluded. But winter’s chill shouldn’t drive you indoors until the spring thaw. Just the opposite, says the Web site ArthritisToday.org. Walking outside in the winter has many health benefits for arthritis sufferers, including burning calories and helping you feel positive and motivated, the site says. Plus, inactivity is often associated with an increase in pain. So how can you stay active and manage your arthritis this winter? Here are a few tips:
Y
6 2010 Active Adult services directory
Stay warm and dry Dampness and cold exacerbate arthritis pain. Dress warmly and avoid dampness. If you live in an area with particularly damp weather, equip your home with a dehumidifier to take excess moisture out of the air. When walking outside, wear warm, waterproof footgear and gloves. Layer your clothes for warmth and breathability, and choose fabrics that wick moisture away from your skin.
Stay Active “Use it or lose it” definitely applies to arthritis sufferers. Exercise can help keep joints moving, strengthen muscles connected to joints, preserve bone health, and improve your overall health and fitness, according to www.Arthritis.org, and, the Web site of the not-for-profit Arthritis Foundation. If you are less active during winter, arthritis can cause even the smallest movement to be painful. Maintain your prescribed exercise regimen, under your doctor’s guidance, as much as possible during winter months. The movement will help fight off the stiffness that cold weather brings to your joints.

Get help See your doctor regularly throughout the winter and consider using aids that are designed to help ease arthritis pain in the colder months. For example, IMAK’s Arthritis Gloves provide mild compression and warmth to help relieve the increased joint pain and swelling associated with winter. Designed by an orthopedic surgeon, the gloves can be worn indoors during daily activities and outdoors under your regular gloves. Made of cotton Lycra, the gloves have open fingertips that allow freedom to touch, feel and grip. Visit www.IMAKproducts.com to learn more.
Keep to your diet Our diets lend to become “heavier” In colder weather as our bodies instinctively crave warmth-generating and tat-building fare to help us stay warmer. But it’s important to maintain a healthy diet throughout the winter Controlling excess weight, which puts undue strain on already sore joints, is a key element of managing your arthritis. Also, talk to your doctor or a qualified nutritionist about what nutritional supplements might be helpful in minimizing your pain. Courtesy of ARAcontent

Do you feel like your bladder controls your life
?
If you answer “yyes,” to any of these questions you may have a condition known as Overactive Bladder (OAB) Do you urinate more than 8 times during the day? Do you urinate more than twice during the night? Are you bothered by the number of times you urinate? Do you often have an overwhelming urge to urinate, an urge that is difficult to ignore? Have you had wetting accidents because you are unable to control the urge to urinate and are unable to get to the restroom in time? “When patients first come to my office with OAB, they are desperate to find a solution. Their fear of wetting accidents, their intense “gotta-go” feelings, and their very frequent trips to the toilet – night and day – impact their family, work, and social lives. I’m excited to now help these patients with an alternative treatment.”
Once a month we will be holding an educational meeting where you can meet with Dr. Davis and he will discuss in detail what OAB is, how to make a diagnosis, explain changes in the bladder anatomy and discuss treatment options in detail.
Please join us January 27, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. Gregory L. Davis, M.D. Skyway Professional Plaza 111 Raley Blvd, Suite 220 Chico, CA 95928 RSVP to 332-9703 If you are unable to attend on this date, check out our website at gldmd.com for future dates and times listed under the News tab.

Not the retiring type of gal …
Fchanges ibromyalgia retirement plans for former newspaper editor By Linda Meilink EARS AGO — all right, it was decades — my mother told me that the first thing she thought of in the morning before she got out of bed was what she was going to cook for dinner. In the 10 years I was the editor of the Paradise Post, I woke up thinking about what stories we were going to work on that day. Now I wake up thinking about what the pain from fibromyalgia will be like. Sometimes the pain wakes me, which is a pretty dire indicator of what the day will be like. Other times I wake up and it isn’t so bad, just an odd assortment of aches, pains, burning, tingling. Other days I have to roll on my side to keep the pressure off my back. Sometimes it gets better after I take a few steps. Sometimes not. The first thing I swallow every morning is a pain pill. Then I get back in bed with my coffee. And wait. Sometimes it works pretty well, sometimes not. What will I be like at 6 in the evening? I have no idea. I miss the rhythm and certainty of my life. It’s been 10 years since fibromyalgia has taken charge of my schedule, my moods, and my abilities. I feel like I’m supposed to write how much I am grateful for the good times I had before I got sick … blah, blah, blah. But I won’t. This sucks. I can’t sit for very long and I can’t stand up as long as I can sit. I can’t use a computer often. Sometimes I have to go lie down for a while. Some days I have to take a lot of pain pills. Years ago when Rush Limbaugh was caught faking oxycontin prescriptions I was disgusted. People like me didn’t take Class II drugs. People like me got up at 5 a.m. for aerobics class. People like me worked 12-hour days and still had time to play. “This wasn’t supposed to happen to me!” I wailed to Dr. Edgar Clark, my Paradise doctor. “There’s no guarantee,” he said. That sucked too. At my last job I was the features editor at the Reno

Then I began to draw attention to myself by standing up and sitting down and carrying my hot pad like a Gucci accessory. I refused to quit my job or take drug medications until my blood pressure went up to 210/120. “You’re gonna have a stroke or a heart attack,” my doctor said. All right, I grumbled. Give me the pills. My husband, former Post reporter Kevin Valine got a better job offer at the Modesto Bee, and here we are. Now here is something about denial: The Bee editors asked me, in a rather back-handed way, if I would be interested in covering a nearby community for them – and I said Yes! I thought Kevin would be so proud of me. Instead he had to drag me back to the doctor who had to repeat once more that she said that someday I might be able to work, and then only at a part-time job. I threw everything I had at her. I lied. I said I was feeling better. I said I was getting strange signals when I was meditating. I said it was God’s will. They were not impressed. I had to call and turn down the job before it was officially offered. It took months to unpack in Modesto. I was in the slow lane. Some days it took all day to go to the store. Some days I couldn’t go. Six months later former Post co-owner, Lowell Blankfort, called me. “What are you doing?” he asked. Now Lowell and I share some qualities, and the most dangerous of all is that neither of us knows when to quit. We talked about all the businesses I could run as long as I didn’t really have to run them. Then he came up with a plan. “You should write a book about this,” he said. “About what? Lowell, I do absolutely nothing all day.” “But that’s the story,” he said. “Write about the disease and how it changed your life. About how you had to give up your career just when you were getting where you wanted to be. About the doctors and how long it took to diagnose you.” “Yeah,” I said. “Yeah, sure.” It was a little trick I Fibromyalgia continues page 18

Fibromyalgia continued from page 16 learned from working with him. Always agree. Then just hope he forgets. As time went on and I talked too much and wrote too little, he could see the writing on the wall. Or the lack of it. It wasn’t there. It wasn’t anywhere. Lowell is a lot smarter than I am, which pains me to admit that. Maybe that’s why he was my boss. “Look,” he said one day. “I’ll loan you $10,000 if you write a book. If the book doesn’t sell, you don’t have to pay me back.” And so that’s how my book was born. I want to tell you that eventually the writing began to inspire me and I felt great joy in sharing my story. But it sucked. It hurt most of the time. I didn’t like dredging up the details: emergency room visits, friends who got tired
of me whining about being sick all the time, people who thought I was faking, medicine that made me throw up. My original plan was to dupe Lowell – just throw some words on a page, turn in something that would pass for a manuscript, pretend to be sad when it didn’t sell. But somewhere between revisions I became a writer again. I was like the dumb crook in O. Henry’s short story, “Clothes Make the Man.” This schmuck was pretending to be a cop while his friends carried off a robbery. But somewhere during the day, as he helped ladies across the street and broke up a gang of belligerent kids, somewhere it kind of got to him, you know what I mean? And when the moment came, he pulled his gun and yelled at his friends, “Stop in the name of the law!”

So without even realizing it I started making revisions, strengthening my vocabulary, tightening the copy. And then I won prizes before the book went to press. Even then I wasn’t really surprised. It just felt normal. And lots of days it still sucks. Writing is hard work. Nearly everyone wants to be a writer but when faced with the Emptiness of the Blank Page and the Trauma of Intense and Terrifying Rejection, they freeze. Because it does suck. But most of the time — and for me this is a good thing — it just feels normal. I asked a mentor once, some 30 years ago, how to become a professional writer. And he said, “It’s like this. Let’s say you’re waiting for a bus. When the bus comes along you just get on the bus
and sit down and look just like everyone else.” So I’m back on the bus. Back to deadlines and revisions and writer’s block. Back to my desk, my thesaurus, my tea cups from yesterday left on top of the printer. But I learned one thing this time as paid my bus fare: Next time I’ll wait for the limo. f you’re over 65 and you own a home, chances are you probably have to do periodic maintenance. If you are in poor health or you have the extra money, you may hire a contractor to do the work for you. That’s all well and good, as long as the contractor you hire is honest and fair, and actually completes the work they were hired to do. Unfortunately not everyone is honest and fair. Just because a contractor is listed in the Yellow Pages does not mean they are good. While the demand for quality home contractors is on the rise, the number of complaints against them is also rising. Home repair scams are increasing in number, and if you’re over 65, you may be a target.
The best defense against a dishonest contractor is an aggressive one. Stay alert and watch out for these warning signs: 0 Door-to-door salesmen who have no local connections and offer to do home repairs at a low price 0 Home repair companies that list only a telephone number or post office box number 0 Contractors who refuse to provide references and proof of insurance 0 Contractors who offer free home inspections but cannot provide evidence of their qualifications 0 Contractors who insist on full payment before the job is complete 0 Contractors who ask for a check payable to a third party 0 Contractors who insist on being paid in cash and offer to take you to the bank to withdraw funds to pay them for their work Before you hire a contractor, make appointments with several and get estimates from them in writing. That way, you will have an idea of approximately how much the job should cost and you can weed out any contractors with bids that seem low or high. Once you have narrowed down your list of contractors, check around and see how long they have been in business. Ask for references and find out if the contractor guarantees their work. Check with the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been lodged against them. Once you have selected a contractor, they must by law 24 2010 Active Adult services directory

provide you with a written contract for any repair or remodeling work costing over $1,000. Both you and the contractor must sign the agreement. Before you do, however, make sure that it includes the contractor’s full name, address and telephone number, as well as a description of the work to be performed. The starting and estimated completion dates should be noted, as well as the total cost of work to be performed, including charges for estimates. A schedule and method of payment should also be included, indicating the exact amount of the down payment, subsequent payments and final payment. If the contract looks suspicious in any way or you do not understand its terms, do not sign it. Take the contract to a lawyer or find a different contractor. If you do sign a contract and have second thoughts, you may be able to cancel it. By law, if the sale was made and signed at your home, you have three business days to cancel it. If it’s been longer than three days, you may have to consult a lawyer. Legally, a contractor must carry minimum
amounts of insurance for property damage, bodily injury and improper home repairs. Ask the contractor you have hired for proof of insurance. If you are having substantial work done, you may want to get a lien waiver. This will protect you from any claims that could be made against you or your property should your contractor fail to pay subcontractors for their work or suppliers for their materials. Once the contractor has finished, inspect their work and voice any complaints you may have. Arrange for your complaints to be taken care of right away and do not make final payment until you are completely satisfied with the work and know that all subcontractors have been paid. It’s your home and your money, so be careful whom you hire to make repairs. Just because you’re over 65 doesn’t mean you have to fall prey to home repair scams. Get the facts about home repair fraud and be on the lookout for anything suspicious. Stand firm and don’t give in to highpressure sales tactics or be fooled by prices that seem too good to be true. Protect your home and yourself !

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE GETTING
OLDER
HE SIGNS OF AGING aren’t always as obvious as a few more wrinkles and grey hairs. The body naturally changes as you get older, but what exactly can you expect and how do you make sure you’re aging in a healthy way? The experts at Mayo Clinic offer a list of things to look for as you age, and tips on how you can stay healthy:
T
HEART As you get older, your heart must work harder to pump the same amount of blood through your body. Your blood vessels may narrow if hardened deposits of fat have formed on your arteries. This can lead to high blood pressure (hypertension). You can help prevent high blood pressure by maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly and reducing your salt intake.
MUSCLES, JOINTS & BONES Your bones shrink in size and density as you age, which makes you susceptible to fracture. Your muscles and joints also lose some flexibility and strength. To help your body stay flexible and to keep your bones strong, get the recommended daily amount of vitamin D and calcium and engage in weight-bearing exercises like walking, climbing stairs and light weight training.
EYES Experienced eyes have thinner retinas with lenses that are less clear. Focusing on objects close up may become more difficult and you may be sensitive to glaring lights, particularly when driving at night. Common eye conditions include glaucoma and cataracts. Eat a healthy diet full of fruits, vegetables and whole grains and get regular eye exams to help catch any problems early. 26 2010 Active Adult services directory
EARS Hearing loss is one of the most common conditions reported in aging adults. The thickening of eardrums can cause you to have difficulty hearing high frequencies and you may notice an increase in ear wax. Avoid prolonged exposure to loud noises and wear hearing protection when doing noisy tasks like mowing the lawn. Have your hearing checked regularly. If you’ve got health concerns or questions about what you can expect as you get older, a great resource to have on hand is the Mayo Clinic Family Health Book, 4th edition. You’ll have great information at your fingertips including: • Preventive screening recommendations and tests to consider based on your age • Hundreds of pages of fully updated information on diseases and conditions • How to protect yourself and prepare for flu pandemics • How to make sense of your symptoms • A medication guide Also included is general information designed to help you navigate the changes and health care decisions that come as we get older. For more information and healthy aging tips, visit MayoClinic.com. To purchase your copy of the Mayo Clinic Family Health Book, 4th edition, visit Courtesy of ARAcontent Bookstore.Mayo Clinic.com.

Part of the Oroville Community Since 1956
There’s a beautiful spirit of community. Of knowing our neighbors, of having friends. Of being with people we can count on. The management and staff of Rose Chapel have been a part of this community spirit since 1951. We’re people you know. People who’ll be here when you need us.
While a great many things have changed over the past 44 years, there’s one thing that hasn’t. That’s our commitment to providing concerned, thoughtful, caring service to the people of this area.

Many people never dream they won’t outlive their pets. But every year, families handling the “estate” drop off countless elderly pets at the local animal shelter. There, among the puppies and kittens, they’re often passed over. But in Paradise, there’s a very special program for those people who open their homes to adoptees over eight years of age. It’s called The Sarah Fund, and it was established by a woman who believed that senior pets were just as deserving of loving homes as younger ones. So it helps with the medical costs these elderly adoptees may incur. Now, her generous fund for the Paradise Animal Shelter is running low, and PASH is asking the public to make a special donation earmarked for “The Sarah Fund.” Because all of Paradise’s elderly deserve the most loving care possible—even those on four paws.
