Welcome to Northern California The waters and forests of Northern California are a mecca for outdoor adventurers. From the sparkling Pacific to the soaring peaks of the Coastal Range and the Cascades, thrill-seekers of all types will find something to pique their interest. The charming towns of this sparsely populated area offer all the amenities of their larger neighbors to the south with none of the Courtesy of Shasta Cascade Wonderland Assoc. crowds. Ride the rapids of the untamed rivers, try your luck at fishing for catfish and bass, or relax in your houseboat on the crystal clear waters of a mountain lake – the possibilities are endless.

WATER SPORTS Water sports abound in Northern California’s lakes, and for hydrophiles, choosing where to go wakeboarding, water and jet skiing, or parasailing is like being a kid in a candy store. The lakes that give Lake County its name provide endless opportunities for water sports. At Clear Lake, several businesses offer jet ski and water ski rentals; for more of a workout, try renting a paddle boat and cruising the lake’s vast waters. The never-ending sun at Shasta Lake, just north of Redding, makes the lake an ideal spot for water sports. The jewel of Northern California, Shasta Lake’s average summer temperature is a pleasant 77 degrees, making it the perfect place for endless days of playing on the water. Nearby Whiskeytown Lake is a favorite for water fans, and boat ramps can be found at both the north and south ends of the lake. Trinity Lake’s 16,000 surface acres offer plenty of room for water skiers to hit the water. Water skiing, boating and windsurfing are just some of the activities you can enjoy on Courtesy of Tri-City Weekly 4

the scenic waters of Lake Almanor, located in Plumas County. Looking for a calm swimming hole? You’re sure to find one in any of the more than 100 lakes in Plumas.

KAYAKING In addition to the rivers and lakes that dot the Northern California countryside, there are several lagoons scattered along the Pacific coastline – not to mention the ocean itself – to explore by kayak. Along the northern Humboldt coast, you’ll find three goodsized lagoons where freshwater and saltwater combine. The marshland habitats of Dry, Stone and Big lagoons support a variety of plants, birds and other wildlife. Big Lagoon’s marshes are an important stop for migratory birds on the Pacific flyway, while spruce and redwoods thrive along the lagoon’s shores. Humboldt Bay stretches from Arcata in the north to the town of Loleta in the south. There are several boat ramps along the bay where boaters can launch their crafts. At the south end of the bay is the Hookton Slough Boat Ramp in the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Explore the marshlands of the refuge while keeping an eye out for egrets, herons and sandpipers. The Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary in the north is an ideal spot to put-in; here, you can see more egrets and water fowl stalking the edges of the farmlands of the Arcata Bottoms. The rocky coast of Mendocino County provides numerous caves, rock gardens and inlets for ocean kayakers to discover. This spectacular stretch of coast is a memorable place to paddle and explore; in the spring, see the wildflowers abloom on hills overlooking the ocean, or escape the summer heat with a relaxing ride on the water. If the waves are too rough, take a tour of the Noyo River and get an up-close look at sea lions, harbor seals and several species of birds. At Van Damme State Park, sea kayakers will find a complex cave system, where you’ll find everything from short, straight caves to 100-yard tunnels to caves as big as barns.

HOUSEBOATING What better way to spend your vacation than on board your own floating home, relaxing in calm lake waters and exploring secluded coves? Come try a unique boating experience and rent a houseboat on one of Northern California’s sundrenched lakes. From simple pontoons to four-star luxury on the water, you’ll be sure to find something to fit your needs and your budget. If you’ve never cruised the lake in a houseboat, you’re definitely in for a treat. Shasta Lake, the “Houseboat Capitol of the West,” is one of the most popular places to go houseboating. The largest manmade lake in California, Shasta’s 30,000 acres provide numerous opportunities for water skiing, parasailing, fishing and swimming. Rugged mountain peaks and majestic forests provide an endless backdrop to your days on the water and stunning views are almost the norm. Another excellent lake for boating is Trinity Lake in Trinity County. The third largest lake in the state, Trinity Lake boasts 147 miles of shoreline and remains relatively uncrowded during the peak summer months. Unwind Courtesy of Shasta Cascade Wonderland Assoc. from the stress of daily life in one of Trinity’s many tree-lined coves or try catching a prize bass from the lake’s crystal waters.

FISHING From Clear Lake to Whiskeytown Lake, Northern California is a fisherman’s dream. Fantastic fishing awaits at any of the numerous lakes found throughout the forests and mountains of this wild region of the state. Clear Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake in California, is the “Bass Capital of the West.” Beginners and experts alike can cast their lines into one of Clear Lake’s “hot spots” and hook Florida strain largemouth black bass, catfish, crappie and bluegill. Fishing season runs 365 days a year at Clear Lake, so don’t forget your license. 8

At 43,000 acres, Clear Lake is the biggest lake in Lake County, but it’s not the only one. Fishermen can search for trout and largemouth bass on the peaceful waters of Blue Lakes, where power boats are limited to 5 miles per hour. Indian Valley Reservoir’s 3,700 acres of water offer plenty of room for anglers hoping to catch rainbow trout, bass, catfish, kokanee and crappie. Rent a fishing boat at Lake Pillsbury for a chance at catching black bass, rainbow trout and sunfish. Farther north, in the Shasta Trinity National Forest, is sunsoaked Whiskeytown Lake, a manmade reservoir featuring 36 miles of pristine shoreline surrounded by impressive mountain views. Too crowded for you? Try the Marble Mountain Wilderness Area, where more than 80 alpine lakes are annually stocked with trout. To truly get away from it all, put on your hiking boots, brush up on your map skills and trek through the backcountry to an off-trail lake. In rural Trinity County, fishermen can cast their lines into Lake Lewiston, home to worldclass trout fishing. Trinity

For more opportunities at largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass, try beautiful Shasta Lake. The lake is a frequent host to bass fishing tournaments, while white sturgeon, brown bullhead and channel catfish also haunt the waters of the lake. Rent a boat or bring your own to pull rainbow trout from the waters of Hammerhead and Howard lakes in the Mendocino National Forest. Golden shiner is also abundant in the lakes; although not considered a game fish, the shiners are a great test for fly fishermen when the trout bite slows. Rainbow trout are the predominant game fish in Plumas County’s many lakes, but German browns, brook trout and Eagle Lake trout, a special strain of rainbow, are also common. Try reeling in a few fish at Lake Almanor – the fishing at the lake is good year round.

Lake’s uncrowded shores are a great place to try for prize bass, trout, kokanee, landlocked Chinook salmon and white catfish. The lake, a 7-mile reservoir surrounded by ponderosa pine and white fir, offers fishermen a chance at rainbow trout, bass, bluegill and brown bullhead.

SURFING When you think of surfing in California, you probably picture Southern California’s crowded beaches or the massive waves of Half Moon Bay. But Northern California’s beaches have long been a favorite haunt of experienced surfers and beginners alike. From the long sandy beaches of Del Norte County to the hidden coves of Mendocino, you’re certain to find the perfect spot to hang ten. At any time of the year, you’ll find surfers riding the waves at Crescent Beach, just south of Crescent City. Because of its sheer size, Crescent Beach works with any swell direction, while the easy access to the beach makes it an ideal spot for family outings. A good spot for beginning surfers is Moonstone Beach, near the town of Trinidad. The beach offers plenty of peaks and several outer sandbars create long peeling lines. Moonstone is large enough to avoid feeling crowded, allowing plenty of room for novice and intermediate surfers to practice their skills. Further south, but also in Humboldt County, is Eureka’s North Jetty. The jetty offers some of the county’s best waves, with high-quality breakers consistently crashing into shore. Not to be outdone, Mendocino County features its own fantastic beaches. North of Fort Bragg is the small beach at Virgin Creek. When the winds are right, an organized swell creates nicely Courtesy of Mark Jacobson shaped peaks and fast waves. For the beginner, check out the cove at Caspar Creek. Protected from the northwest winds by the bluffs, the waves at Caspar Creek are generally slow and peeling – ideal conditions for those just starting out on their surfing careers. As you head south, the waves keep getting better and better, culminating in the world-class beach at Point Arena. Two excellent breaks are found at the point, just south of Mendocino. Whether you want a fast wave with a steep takeoff or a more gentle peeling wave, the choice is yours at Point Arena. 14

DIVING World-class diving sites abound along the Northern California coastline, especially along the Mendocino County coast, where you’ll find beautiful reefs and magical marine life. Point Arena is known for its colorful reef, while the rocky ocean bottom at Van Damme State Beach is covered in green anemones. More interesting habitats wait to be discovered at Russian Gulch and Noyo Harbor; MacKerricher State Park, just north of Fort Bragg, features an offshore underwater park for divers. Further north, around Humboldt Bay’s North and South jetties, divers will find abundant and colorful marine life, while Trinidad harbor and Patrick’s Point State Park offer several fine diving sites. If the seas are too rough to dive, explore the diverse sea life in the tide pools at Palmer’s Point. There’s more diving Courtesy of Rachel McGinnis

RAFTING Northern California is a mecca for whitewater rafters; choosing which rapid to brave first won’t be an easy decision. A multitude of rivers crisscross the region: there are the wild rivers that give Six Rivers National Forest its name – the Smith, Klamath, Trinity, Mad, Van Duzen and Eel – as well as the lesser known, but equally exciting, Scott and Salmon rivers in the Shasta Cascade. The Smith River is one of California’s last free-flowing rivers, flowing unimpeded to the Pacific. For a warm-up, try the

DIVING/RAFTING

For a freshwater diving experience, try popular Whiskeytown Lake in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The lake’s 3,200 acres offer endless opportunities to discover the life under the surface waters. In the spring, join the annual treasure hunt for abalone along the Pacific coastline. Although commercial and recreational sale of the elusive mollusks has been banned, divers still enjoy searching the frigid and unpredictable ocean waters to bring home these delicious delicacies.

easier sections of the Middle and South forks before hitting the rapids of the North Fork. The South Fork offers a nice Class III-IV run with great scenery, while the Middle Fork features the Class V Siskiyou Gorge followed by Class II+ rapids. The challenging North Fork of the Smith River is a classic run, a scenic 14-mile trek with several Class IV rapids and rare vegetation found along the riverbank. The Trinity River offers more whitewater adventures, including the Pigeon Point Run, a 5.7-mile run of Class III rapids that flows through a forested canyon. A vertical drop at the Class IV- Hell Hole Rapid is the highlight of this daylong trip. For a longer trip, try the Lower Klamath River; the 37.5-mile run from Happy Camp to the Green Riffle offers several quality Class II and III rapids, while great campsites along the river can turn this into a oneto six-day run through the wilderness. For an advanced group of rafters, the meandering Eel River could be the longest continuous run in the state. It’s Courtesy of Jeff Mackay possible to float the tributaries of the Middle Fork of the Eel to the main river all the way to the Pacific. Of course, if you want a shorter trip, there are several places to put-in and take-out all along the river. The main stretch of the Eel River is usually run from Dos Rios to Alderpoint, a four-day run of Class III rapids. This stretch of the river follows an old railroad track, and the dramatic scenery is picture perfect. The Scott River is ideal for experienced rafters. A 10.2-mile Class V run through the Klamath National Forest, the Scott starts in the spectacular Marble Mountains, running through the Scott Valley before dropping into a canyon full of Class IV and V rapids. More challenging rapids await on the nearby Salmon River, another 10.2-mile run with several Class IV and three Class V rapids. The clear water flows through a bedrock canyon, and because of its remote location, the river is rarely crowded. 18

MOUNTAIN BIKING Hidden among Northern California’s rugged hills and sunny forests are a multitude of biking trails, from the Oregon border to the rolling countryside of Lake County to the foothills of the Cascades. The Smith River National Recreation Area is crossed by more than 150 mile of county and forest roads, all open to mountain bikers. As you pedal along, keep an eye out for eagles, falcons, coyotes and other wildlife. The mountain paths also lead you past bubbling streams and sparkling lakes not seen from the main road. Biking in the Shasta Cascade is a treat for any mountain biker – both the Shasta Trinity National Forest and the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area offer trails for all skill levels. In Shasta Trinity, ride the 50-mile loop around volcanic Mt. Shasta and see the glaciers on the eastern slope and the lava flow in the valley. Trails in Whiskeytown vary from the Clikapudi Trail in Jones Valley to the challenging Shasta Bally Loop. The Shasta Bally trail starts with a steep ascent and culminates at the peak of Courtesy of Christopher Bruno Shasta Bally Mountain at 6,200 feet.

In the ancient Klamath Mountains, you’ll find the trail to beautiful Carter Meadows. Beginning at the Scott River-Salmon River divide, the path takes you through the trees to the meadow, while an alternative trail on the other side of the river offers challenges to the more advanced rider. Mt. Shasta is visible from nearly every corner of the forest, so keep an eye out for photo-worthy views. Experienced riders will fall in love with the Happy Camp Campground Trail, a 20-mile dirt path that begins with a steep drop to Cedar Creek and follows with a climb to the natural meadow of Groves Prairie. Take a rest and enjoy the scenery at Groves Prairie, which is surrounded by towering evergreens and magnificent ferns, before heading back to Happy Camp.

MOUNTAIN BIKING

The Mendocino National Forest’s near-total lack of cars creates a paradise for mountain bikers. There are 100 miles of trails that cut through the forest, from leisurely day rides to 26-mile hell-and-back treks. The Letts Lake Loop, a moderate 7.5-mile trip, takes you through conifer and oak forests; although there are a few sustained grades along this well-marked trail, it is suitable for experienced and novice bikers alike. Also found in the Mendocino forest is the North Cow Mountain Recreation Area. Primarily dedicated to non-motorized activities, North Cow Mountain has 17 miles of trails to explore and discover.

Many miles of biking trails cross the rugged terrain of Plumas County. Families will enjoy the paved loop trail along the west shore of Lake Almanor, while the more experienced bikers can ride through the heart of the forest on an abandoned logging road.

ROAD BIKING The light traffic along Northern California’s roads make this region a paradise for bicyclists. The charming towns that border the Pacific offer day rides along urban streets, while the more adventurous can travel from town to town along the coastal highways. Explore California’s far northwestern corner on two wheels – Del Norte County’s rural roads lead you past cattle ranches, farm fields and evergreen forests, as well as wild sections of the untamed coast. Among the sights to see are the Easter lily bulb farms near the town of Smith River, where 90 percent of the world’s Easter lily bulbs are cultivated. Or take a break from pedaling in Crescent City and watch the fishermen unload their catch on the docks. If the tide’s out, be sure to take a tour of the Battery Point Lighthouse, on the far western edge of the city. Humboldt County offers bikers the best of both urban trails and rural roads. You can ride through the Victorian seaport of Eureka or pedal past dairy farms in the Eel River Valley. For a relaxed ride, try the Hammond Coastal Trail, a 5-mile multiuse trail that starts in the Arcata Bottoms, then crosses the Mad River before continuing north to Clam Beach County Park in McKinleyville. The crashing waves of the Pacific are never far off as you ride, and several spots along the trail offer excellent views of the river and ocean. Of course, no biking trip to the North Coast would be complete without a ride down the Avenue of Giants. This alternative to Highway 101 winds through the heart of redwood country. Riding under these towering giants of the forest will leave you speechless as you cruise down the narrow, 31-mile road. As Highway 101 turns inland, bicyclists will want to venture onto Highway 1, a curving road that passes through the New England-style town of Mendocino as it follows the Pacific coastline all the way to San Francisco. In Mendocino, bikers will find a multitude of quiet country roads that traverse the area’s inland forests and parallel the rocky headlands of the Pacific.

ily or a challenging trek through the state’s rugged wilderness. You can meander between beach dunes in sight of the Pacific, walk under ancient redwoods or stroll past sparkling alpine lakes – the choice is yours. In Del Norte County, 65 miles of trails crisscross the Smith River National Recreation Area. The challenging 5-mile Doe Flat Trail takes you to the Devil’s Punchbowl, while the more relaxing 0.8-mile High Dome trail leads you to a high mountain meadow. The historic south Kelsey Trail crosses the pristine and rugged Siskiyou Wilderness. Hikers seeking solitude will enjoy the Siskiyou backcountry – get off the beaten path and hike along windswept slopes, where you’ll see amazing views of mountain ridges unfolding to the horizon. The nearby Six Rivers National Forest also offers plenty of trails. Named for the wild rivers that flow through it – the Smith, Klamath, Trinity, Mad, Van Duzen and Eel – the forest is a region of jagged peaks, glacial lakes and mountain meadows. The Clear Creek National Recreation Trail cuts through the heart of this wilderness, with lots of side trails to explore. The moderate Summit Valley Trail offers magnificent views of the Pacific as it winds through mountain meadows where beautiful wildflowers bloom in spring and summer. The trail eventually takes you to the Old Summit Valley lookout site, where you can look east to the rugged Siskiyou Wilderness and west to the endless Pacific Ocean. In the Shasta Trinity National Forest, you’ll have the opportunity to hike along one of America’s most famous trails – the Pacific Crest Trail. More than 150 miles of this 2,600mile trek pass through the forest in an east-west direction. Hikers along this stretch of trail will catch awe-inspiring views of Mount Shasta, Castle Crags and the Trinity Alps. Of course, the Pacific Crest Trail isn’t the only trail in Shasta-Trinity. With more than 1,400 miles of trails winding through the forest, hikers are certain to find something to suit their needs. Along the far north border of California, you’ll find the Klamath National Forest, whose multifaceted terrain ranges from high desert to lush rain forest. Trails in this area cut through the Klamath Mountains, the oldest of the Pacific coastal mountains, dating back almost 500 million years. Be sure to bring your camera – this is Bigfoot 26

country and you just might come across the elusive beast while strolling through the forest. For a chance at solitude without a trek into the wilderness, head to the Mendocino National Forest. Although just a few hours north of San Francisco, Mendocino’s forests remain relatively unknown – probably because it’s the only one of California’s national forests that’s not traversed by a single paved road. Within the Mendocino National Forest are two wilderness areas that will be sure to please backpackers – Snow Mountain and the Yolla Bolly Middle Eel. Both offer numerous trails and stunning views that often leave visitors speechless. In the Yolla Bolly Wilderness Area, you’ll find the 8.8-mile Ides Cove Loop, an ancient Indian route. The loop trail passes through chaparral and foxtail pine and through landscapes ranging from steep-walled basins to rugged Harvey Peak. Shorter routes are also available – try the 3-mile Peterson Trail, which leads you to pioneer ruins as you walk under massive ponderosa pines. The well-known Lake Almanor Recreation Trail in Plumas County gives hikers a chance at a quick excursion, while the more experienced head to the magnificent trails of nearby Lassen Volcanic National Park. 601 N.
