Editor’s note
Home maintenance is not one of my strong points. Just the other day, I looked out my daughter’s second-floor window and saw water pooled in the gutters. Not good. My hubby quickly rectified the situation, but we both wondered how long the water had been sitting there and how much damage it had done. I know my home has to be maintained. And when money is tight, it makes sense to do it yourself. Or does it? Hardware stores sell a lot of items I could use to get my home ready for winter. But if I buy those items, will I know what to do with them? Probably not. My husband is much handier than I am. As a trained automotive technician, he’s a dream in the garage. But, when you get down to it, neither of us is a carpenter, a plumber, a painter or an electrician. So some jobs require help from the professionals. I think everyone can benefit from getting tips from the professionals from time to time, which is why we asked a couple of local experts to tell us how to get our homes ready for winter.

They came up with a 10-point checklist on pages 10 and 11. And, even someone with limited technical experience, like myself, can handle their practical advice. But this magazine isn’t all work and no play. Football season is upon us, and we include a guide to throwing the perfect tailgate party. Turn to pages 24 and 25 to find out what it takes. (Hint: Food and beverages are pretty important.) Autumn is also time for some fun local events: The York Fair, Apple Harvest Festival and, of course, Halloween! For a longer list of fun things to do this fall, turn to pages 6 and 7. If those ideas don’t suit you, just head outside, find a pile of leaves and jump in.

Letter To the EDITOR I was very interested and pleased with your magazine, this was the first copy I have ever seen. I look forward to future issues. I was disappointed with the cover photo and the photo with the story on page 16. It is obvious that the seat belt in the car does not properly fit the 2-year-old child. The shoulder belt would cut his neck if in a crash. It should fit over the shoulder, not across the neck. The child needs to be in a child safety seat. Pennsylvania law states children younger than 4 should be in an appropriate-sized car seat. Children 4 to 8 should be in a booster seat. Until a child is 80 pounds and about 4 feet 9 inches, they won’t properly fit into an adult sized seat belt, and should ride in an appropriate safety seat. Even if the child was posed for the picture, the picture sets a bad example for parents who already may not do the correct thing regarding child safety seat restraints, or on the fence about buying the correct safety seat. You could use this mistake to your advantage by using it as a stepping off point for an article about safety seats in your next issue. At the very least, I will look forward to seeing a loud broad statement in your next issue saying that the child should have been pictured in a safety seat. While we are all not perfect, we need to be careful what safety messages we present to the public.

READER’S SMART TIP A child’s masterpiece + going green = the spirit of giving My older son finished kindergarten in June. His first year of school brought many new experiences to our family: field trips, concerts, PTO activities, report cards. In addition, there were art projects, alphabet worksheets, workbook activities — decorated with a smile or sticker praising our son’s hard work. Of course, we were overjoyed but quickly became overwhelmed. What were we possibly going to do with all of this paper? I found myself in a quandary. I knew I couldn’t save it all, yet as I stood before the recycling bin, my fingers simply couldn’t release the memories. So I thought of my parents — pioneers of the Go Green Initiative,
if you will. I asked myself, “How can I reuse this paper?” Thankfully, the energy efficient light bulb ignited. Why not use my son’s work to wrap gifts — Christmas, Hanukkah, birthdays, Mother’s and Father’s Day, Teacher Appreciation, etc.? So, I tried it with both of my sons on Father’s Day. First, I asked them to select “masterpieces” they would like to use. Then, they helped me wrap each gift. What began as an effort to reuse paper soon became an intimately special exchange. I had discovered a recipe for the spirit of giving. — Erica Walter, 35, Conewago Township, York County

hen it comes to interior design, “the green movement” isn’t restricted to an added environmental consciousness. The color itself is hugely popular. Nan’s European Peddlers owners and interior designers Lynda Carroll and DeAnna Hain say the secret to incorporating the color is to look to nature. The mother-daughter duo formerly worked in Philadelphia. Hain favors urban styles, while Carroll says her preference is modern with a touch of European. Both said green is hot, and it works with any style. “What you’re really seeing as a trend right now is the use of nature as a society as a whole,” Hain said. “We’re more conscious of nature, so in all decorating styles, the trend is to bring the outside in.” In the boutique, Hain and Carroll practice what they preach. The Tollgate Plaza store in York Township is filled with greenery, from jeweltoned pillows to whimsical topiaries. “When people come in, they feel like they’re walking into a garden.” The natural trend means the dark hunter hue so popular a few decades ago is definitely a thing of the past. “The greens we’re seeing are a lot of bright spring greens, almost a citrus or lime tone,” Hain said. “The deeper greens have a mixture of brown, like an olive. Very, very natural greens.” The best part of this trend: It’s easy and inexpensive to incorporate it into any design, Carroll said. Just start with accessories. “Accessories tell a lot about personality,” Carroll said.

8 | smart
HERE’S HOW Start with the basics. “We found that people put all of their money into a fullon design overhaul with one style or trend in mind,” Hain said. Instead, keep the furniture, window treatments and walls neutral beige or brown. Then bring in art and accessories, each of which can be easily — and inexpensively — switched out as trends change. “In this economy, that’s the most important thing to think of. If you have a pattern sofa and mauve tone on the wall, you’re really limited.” Pick your hue. When choosing your shade of green, look to nature. Soft natural greens like grass and trees give a classic and timeless look. The bolder greens found in citrus fruits give a vibrant, energetic punch of color. Your olive tones will add a comforting warm touch to your home. Most importantly, the trend is to showcase you and your home’s personality — pick a shade that makes you happy. Accessorize. If you already have a lot color, add topiaries or a splash of ivy to a mantle. Bring a small greenery to the cof-
fee table. This applies whether the current décor is country, Victorian, traditional, modern or urban. “Our flowers work in all of those rooms,” Hain said. “A natural piece can work in anything.” Maybe buy a few emerald pillows for the couch and add some green-hued balls to a glass bowl for a centerpiece, Hain said. Be adventurous. Too many times, clients try to match patterns and shades exactly, Carroll said. If the window treatments match the rug, which matches the sofa, personality is stifled. “You really want your home to be creative. Balance, a very important element to design, can be achieved without matching everything.” Figure out your budget. “In all fairness, you can’t go out and think you’re going to change a room with one floral arrangement and one piece of art,” Carroll said. If you have a budget, don’t sink all of it into a piece of art. It’s best to start small and build your room as you find pieces that suit your taste and reflect the individuality of your home. Keep in mind that you can always add more and more layers.

TRENDS AND TIPS Here are few other trends and tips, to consider from DeAnna Hain and her mother, Lynda Carroll. • Bring the outside in. If it looks like something you’d find in nature, it’s in style, Hain said. “Together, everyone is becoming more and more earth-minded. It’s nearly impossible not to.” • Accessorize with jewel tones. Look for items, such as throw pillows, that capture the light in shimmery golds and citrus hues. • Glass is hot right now. Buy a big glass bowl as a centerpiece. Put colored balls into the bowl, and you have an easily changeable and trendy piece, Hain said. • Start a collection. A room means more when it’s filled with personality. So figure out what you love, and add it to your décor.

Keep out the cold
Getting your home ready for Old Man Winter By BETH BENCE REINKE for Smart
Have you ever left the garden hose outside all winter? According to local home maintenance experts Annie Weirich and Scott Hittie, checking outdoor faucets and hoses are among the most common things people forget to do in the fall. Weirich, who is owner/operator of Almost Anything by Annie in East Manchester Township, said many homeowners don’t turn off the water feeding their outdoor spigots. “Water freezes in the pipes and it bursts where it attaches to the spigot, so then you have a plumbing bill,” she said. As co-owner of Shrewsbury True Value Plus in Shrewsbury Township, Hittie sees people attempting home repairs during winter that should really be tackled in autumn. “It’s better to check things over before you get into the bad weather because a lot of products might not work in cold temperatures,” he said.

10 tasks to prepare for winter:
1) Turn off the water to outdoor faucets. Follow the water pipe until you find the shutoff valve inside your home, Weirich said. Look for a round handle and turn it to the right. Or replace regular faucets with frost-free, self-draining fixtures. 2) Unhook and drain garden hoses. Hoses should be removed and drained before storing, Hittie said. Start at one end and hold the hose up, then work your way down until it’s empty.
3) Clean your gutters. Gutters often contain a mudlike mixture from shingle granules washing down into the organic material that has accumulated. Scoop out the debris, then use a hose to ensure water is running freely. 4) Insulate your attic. Since most heat is lost through the attic, adding insulation there is cost efficient. “Around York County, a minimum of 12 inches of fiberglass insulation (in the attic) is recommended,” Hittie said. 5) Check your windows. If you have an older home with single-pane glass, pull the storm windows down. Consider replacing single panes with thermopane windows.
HHH HHH
6) Caulk around windows and doors. How can you tell where to caulk? “Anywhere you have cracks or can feel cold air coming in,” Weirich said. If you have irregular-shaped cracks or holes, Hittie recommends using an expanding foam sealant that you spray in. 7) Check your furnace. Change the filter and have the furnace inspected and cleaned by professionals. Install a carbondioxide detector at your furnace in case it malfunctions, Hittie said. 8) Protect your outdoor furniture and grill. Weirich suggests storing lawn furniture inside a garage or shed. Or use lawn furniture covers or a tarp and bungee cords. Grills should be cleaned, then covered or stored in a shed.
9) Clean up your yard and flower beds. Trim plants and rake leaves that have collected in flower beds and on the lawn. Hittie recommends spreading lime and winterizer-type fertilizers, which strengthen the root system of your grass. 10) Winterize your lawn mower. Clean all grass off the outside and underneath the mower deck, and sharpen the blades so they’re ready for next spring. Run the engine until the tank is dry, or drain the gas back into your gas can. Another option is to add a fuel stabilizer to the gas tank each fall, then run the engine a few minutes to circulate it through the carburetor and fuel system.

WALL MAKEOVER Hang wallpaper like the professionals By TARA HAWKINS for Smart PHOTOS BY KATE PENN for Smart
Steve Rickrode of New Oxford has been hanging wallpaper professionally for more than 40 years. In addition to having his own business, he also is a contractor for York Wallcoverings in York. While a professional installation costs $30 to $35 per single roll, doing it yourself costs relatively little. With the right tools and Rickrode’s expert instructions, your room can have a fresh new look for fall. Choosing your wallpaper Finding the right paper for your room might be one of the hardest steps. There are thousands of choices! Keep your budget in mind. Wallpaper prices can vary from $16 to hundreds per roll. Before ordering, take your room dimensions into the store. A salesperson will be able to figure out how much paper you need. Preparing the walls Repair any cracks or blemishes. The paper might temporarily mask problems, but over time, they will show. If the drywall is new or has not been properly sealed, use a good primer. Rickrode recommends using Zinsser’s Shieldz Universal White Wallpaper Primer. A gallon costs about $16 at Lowe’s.

Your Dreams! Inspecting your bolts Don’t be surprised to come away with half of the number of wallpaper rolls than you expected. Wall coverings are sold by the bolt. A bolt is a double roll. Each bolt will list the pattern name and run number. Make sure all have the exact same run number. Cutting your wallpaper Start in the least conspicuous corner in the room. Do not assume that your corner is plumb. Measure out a plumb line and draw a line on the wall. Cut one piece of paper at a time leaving at least 3 extra inches. You will be able to trim the excess at the ceiling and floor once it is in place. Pasting Many wallpapers and borders come pre-pasted. These only require submerging the paper in water until it is thoroughly wet. The water activates the glue. Most installers prefer to use a paste activator. It keeps the paper wet longer and makes installation easier. You can use paste even if the paper is pre-pasted. Before soaking the wallpaper, roll your pre-cut sheet inside out and place it in the water. If using paste, simply roll out the paper upside down on your work surface. Use a paint roller to apply a very thin coat — only enough to wet the surface. Re-measure the paper after it is wet. It will expand slightly and will not shrink back to its original dimensions.
SMART TIP
Hanging Using only your hands, begin placing your paper at the top of the wall. Try not to drag it across the wall. Once it is all in place, use the brush or plastic smoother in an up-and-down motion. Don’t stretch the paper. Like paint, paper does not look perfect when it is wet. Finishing Once the sheet is secured, use the 3-inch Spackle blade and OLFA knife to trim the excess paper from the top and bottom. Use a damp sponge to clean the excess paste off of the paper. Roll the seam and wash over it again. Towel dry the entire surface.
CHECKLIST
The right tools can make the job a lot easier. ❏❏ OLFA cutter with built-in blade snapper ❏❏ Seam roller ❏❏ 1½-inch putty knife ❏❏ 3” Spackle blade ❏❏ 6” Spackle blade ❏❏ Nail bag to hold tools ❏❏ Scissors ❏❏ Brush or plastic smoother ❏❏ Tape measure ❏❏ Ultra-clear paste ❏❏ Ladder ❏❏ White rag or towel ❏❏ Sponges
Suzanne Vernetti, store manager at York Wallcoverings, recommends allowing the paper to dry overnight before hanging anything on the wall.

It will soon be that time of year — the colors will be bright oranges, yellows, and reds, and those beautiful leaves will tumble to the ground in ever-increasing increments. Although they might be fun to pile for your children to play in, what should you do with them afterward? Often, people decide to burn their autumn leaves, if their municipality allows. Can’t burn leaves? Turn to York County Solid Waste Authority. The facility is taking steps to use organic matter and convert it into clean energy. Disposing of these materials in the waste authority’s facilities reduces pollution, making it safer for the environment. There is a minimum fee of $10 to dispose of leaf and yard waste at the Waste Authority’s Resource Recovery Center, up to 340 pounds. Loads larger than that cost $56 per ton. Other possibilities for leaf disposal include small farms. Companies, such as H & H General Excavating in Spring Grove, collect organic materials, such as leaves and all parts of trees, as well. Some townships also have a curbside pick-up service, where the garbage service will have a separate collection for leaves and yard waste. Contact your township or waste pick-up company for information.

Check with your municipality. Each municipality has different rules about holding open burns. Also let County Control and the local fire station know when and where you are holding the burn. Be safe. Keep the burn away from buildings. Keep a good visual on the fire. And don’t burn very dry things because the fire could spread too quickly. Have a back-up plan. Have a way to put out the fire nearby.
Don’ts
Burn during a county burn ban. This mean the area is too dry, and a small fire can easily get out of control. Burn illegal items. Because of excessive smoke and chemicals, it is illegal to burn wires, insulation and other materials that become hazardous when burning. Other dangerous items are accelerants, such as propane and gasoline. Plastics also create a lot of smoke. Burn at night. Burns are illegal after sundown.

Motor vehicle crashes are the No. 1 killer of children younger than 14, local experts say. Although guidelines regarding car safety seats have been created to protect children, knowing how to choose and use a car seat can be complicated for some parents. Laura Fagan, a traffic safety specialist for the Center for Traffic Safety, which serves areas including York and Adams counties, said Pennsylvania law requires all children younger than 8 to be properly restrained in a child safety seat that’s appropriate for the child’s age and size. “We say up to the age of 8 ... but we recommend that the car seat be in the back seat,” Fagan said. She also said it’s important to follow the directions when using a car seat.

“We don’t recommend going to a yard sale,” she said. “There are a lot of reasons you don’t want to use an (unknown) seat.” Parents can also seek assistance from a certified child-passenger-safety technician to correctly use and install their child’s car seat, said Joe Anne Ward-Cottrell, community health improvement and coordinator of the Safe Kids BuckleUp program. “Parents can actually come in and have their car seat checked,” she said about the Safe Kids York County office on South Edgar Street in York. The law does not require children to ride in the back of a vehicle. However, the back seat is the safest place for children younger than 13, she said. Children from 4 to 8 years old are required to use a seat-belt system and an
Safe Kids York County says: • Child safety seats are continually updated. Read and follow vehicle owner’s manual and car seat instructions to install a child’s seat correctly. • Keep seats rear-facing until an infant is at least a year old and weighs 20 pounds. Use a rear-facing convertible seat longer if the seat has higher weight and height limits. Children are five times safer in a rear-facing seat up until their second birthday. • Install an infant’s car seat rear-facing, reclined no more than a 45-degree angle, so the infant’s head stays in contact with the seat and his or her airway stays open. • Use a forward-facing seat with harnesses for toddlers older than 1 and heavier than 20 pounds. Use the top tether if your vehicle and car seat are both so equipped. • Be sure the car seat harness is tight, so you can’t pinch extra webbing at the shoulder. Adjust the chest clip to armpit level. • Use a booster seat until the child weighs 80 to 100 pounds, is about 4-feet, 9-inches tall and can sit upright with a properly fitting safety belt.

appropriately fitting child passenger safety seat, she said. “It’s actually 4- to 8-(year-olds) that have the most injuries,” Ward-Cottrell said of children who aren’t properly restrained in a car seat. “That adult seat belt was just not made for the little guys.”

Throw the
perfect tailgate
pa rt y
Sport fans, fire up your grill By HOLLY WHITE for Smart
Mountains of food, sports fans galore, friends, family, music and (hopefully) warm weather: the perfect combination for tailgating. “You can tailgate at baseball, football and NASCAR, though it gets a bit cold in hockey season,” said Ray Gross of Hellam Township. A Pittsburgh fan, he’s been tailgating since he was in college. “You can either go all out with a grill, tables, chairs, canopies, or you can just throw open your hatch-back and spread out a blanket,” said Kathy Eby, a Penn State tailgater from Lancaster.
About our model
Some people arrive with the sunrise, others late morning, but most spend the majority of the day in the parking lot and at the game. “If you want a good spot, you’ll have to get there very early,” Gross said. He usually tries to arrive about 7:30 a.m. Once, he showed up after 8 a.m. and had to park more than 2 miles from the stadium. The important things are that there’s lots of food and lots of fun. “Mostly we walk around, talk to people, look at all the things going on

and the games being played and eat!” said Cindy McConkey, also a Penn State tailgater, from Seven Valleys. She recommends that the best idea is to find groups with the largest spread and get yourself invited. Once you get there, let the food-making begin! “We always bring lots of items to cook up, like chili and hot cocoa for cooler days, and eggs and sausage for breakfast,” McConkey said. Eby often makes some of the desserts the day before but brings steak, potatoes, salad and shrimp to make the day of the tailgate. “I have the best recipe for shrimp — you buy one or two pounds of it, wrap it in one of those foil grill bags with a stick of butter and loads of old bay seasoning, and then steam them on the grill for a few minutes. They are delicious,” Eby said. Gross recommends big, juicy burgers on the grill with home-
made bread and micro brews. “I always make my burgers interesting, with either cheddar cheese and bacon chopped up and cooked inside the burger, or blue cheese, or maybe some jalapenos,” he said. Other dishes that are great for tailgating: • shish kabobs • chili • chicken sandwiches • subs • baked potatoes For drinks, anything you love can make the day more enjoyable. A keg of your favorite beer, a local micro brew, Bloody Marys or mimosas, Kool-Aid, or Fanta can all be a part of your tailgating outing. “It’s a great activity for all ages; we’ve brought our family since our kids were little, or we’ve come with other couples. We see groups of college kids and big extended families all sitting together, talking and laughing and catching up,” McConkey said.
Jared Bean of Manchester Township is a Penn State tailgating fanatic. He even has a Web site dedicated to the cause, pennstatetailgate.com.
Here’s his list of basics:
Parking space: Get there early and find a space with some open area around you. By finding grass, you will be able to spread out and be comfortable. Food: Next to the game, food is the reason many people tailgate. So, have plenty of it. Beverage: Pick what you enjoy. While most prefer beer, you can be creative, with mimosas and Irish coffee in the morning, and Captain Morgan to cap the evening. Or pick your favorite soft drink.
Bark bars recipe
2 sticks of butter 1 cup of dark brown sugar 1 sleeve of saltines 1 12-oz. bag of semi-sweet chocolate morsels Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line cookie sheet with foil, then spray with cooking spray. Line cookie sheet with crackers salt side up. Melt butter and sugar in medium pan and boil for 2 to 3 minutes. Pour over the crackers and bake for 5 minutes. Take out and sprinkle morsels over and return to oven for another 2 to 3 minutes. Take out and spread the melted morsels over the mix with the back of a spoon. Freeze for a minimum of one hour — more is fine. Bring to the game and enjoy all day long! — Kathy Eby

Tying a scarf doesn’t have to be a chore. Scarves can be fun, and there are lots of ways to wear these fashionable accessories. A few ideas include:
Fold scarf in half longways. Place around neck ends draped down in back. Criss cross ends and bring to front. Knot ends in front and place under neck of scarf. Should look like a loose turtleneck.
Place around neck. One end hangs longer than other. Take longer end and loop around shorter end and begin to pull through neck hole. (Don’t completely pull end through.) Drape this end over neck. It should resemble a half bow.
Place scarf around neck with ends even in the front. Flip right end over left, forming a half-knot about chest-high. Layer a long chain, pearl or stone necklace over top of scarf.
SMART TIP
A scarf can also be tied around the waist for a belt or hip wrap, worn as a wrap, used for a headband or wrapped around a hat. Sources: Collage Specialty Shop in Spring Garden Township; youtube.com ILLUSTRATIONS BY SAMANTHA K. DELLINGER for Smart

pucker up Make your lips more kissable By HOLLY WHITE for Smart
golden and chocolate red colors, and light complexions should try pinks and peachy colors,” Tiepernam said.
“If you use the right products and layer them, you shouldn’t have to reapply a product at all,” Tiepernam said. She recommends using primer, liner, color and gloss if wanted, and your color will last
How to pick the right shade?
“Often the right shade has to do with skintone and eye-color combinations. Those with silver hair should stick with pinks and melons, bronze skin tones should try
Should I use lip liner?
“Lip liner defines and shapes the lips, preventing lipstick from feathering and bleeding out, and helps the lip color last longer,” Stokes said. Tiepernam said if a woman colors her entire top and bottom lip with the liner as a base, it will cause the lipstick coat to be brighter. “Just outline the lips and lightly shade in to the center with liner,” she said.
How often should I reapply to keep my lips lustrous?
most of the day. If you use a lip product that needs only one application, make sure it has both an spf and moisturizer, Stokes said.
How can I make my lips look larger or smaller? “To make the lips look more plump, some product lines carry an application that diminishes fine lines on and around the lips. Some lipsticks also have Retinol and collagen ingredients to assist the lips looking more full,” Stokes said. To make lips smaller or larger, simply coat with concealer or foundation, and then draw in the lip liner where you’d like your lips outlined. For a pouty look, apply a slight amount of gloss just in the center of your lips. And, don’t forget to smile!

Smooth, lustrous, kissable lips is something every woman wants to have. “To have great lips, you have to care for them properly,” said Amy Tiepernam, a Mary Kay representative from York. She recommends exfoliating your lips once a week. You can either use a gentle microderm product with emollients or a warm face cloth accompanied by a very soft toothbrush. “The most important tip to keeping your lips smooth and fresh is to moisturize your lips after exfoliating and before applying any products,” said Denise Stokes, an independent Avon representative from York.

ONE SMART WOMAN
Ready to respond By TARA HAWKINS for Smart
How did you first become interested in a career in law enforcement? I have always been interested. After high school, I became a firefighter and an EMT. My dad was a fire chief for more than 25 years; my mom is a nurse; my sister is a paramedic; and my youngest sister is a dispatcher. It runs in the family. I even married into it. My husband is a probation officer. When I moved here from New Jersey, I wanted to make a change in my life. I wanted to create something for myself, by myself. I went back to school to prove that I could do it. What are your duties with the Criminal Response Unit? I am out on the street all of the time. As a unit, we serve warrants and assist other police agencies. We also walk the streets with the Guardian Angels. The days are long, but I love my job. I have been with the Sheriff’s Office for five years. I can’t imagine doing anything else. I also have been sworn in as a U.S. Marshal with the Fugitive Task Force in York County. It has been a great opportunity.
I have gone out with the marshals to serve high-risk warrants for homicide, rape, burglary and felony drug charges. Are some of the situations you deal with scary? Yes. I do have a sense of fear. You never know what is going to be behind the next door. That fear is beneficial. It makes you more aware of your surroundings. What is the most rewarding part of your job? This just isn’t your typical job. I encounter different people and situations every day. I am out there to help. Seeing the members of our unit working together with other agencies has been really rewarding. This job isn’t about individuals. We can only be successful if we work together as a team. What advice do you have for other women considering a career like yours? Well, it really is a man’s world. There aren’t too many women. If you believe that you can do it, go for it. Don’t give up because of what others might say. I knew that I could do it and I did. And I love it.
