Give the Unforgettable Gift of Entertainment Looking for a unique present to give this holiday season? You can capture some special holiday savings when you give the gift of Carmen or West Side Story. Present the music lover in your live with tickets and save 15% off. For an even greater savings, give tickets to both productions for 25% off entire order. One of the most popular and frequently performed operas in the classical canon, Carmen has been widely acclaimed for its brilliance of melody, harmony, atmosphere, and orchestration. This February 12 – 27, Opera San José joins forces with the acclaimed Flamenco Society of San José for a beautiful reimagined production of this work, fusing dance, singing, and drama to tell the passionate tale of a defiant heroine, whose rebellious quest for freedom seals her tragic fate. Immensely challenging to sing and perform, the award-winning West Side Story has bridged the gap between musicals and opera. For the first time in company history, Opera San José brings a musical to the stage from April 16 – May 1, 2022, closing out this unforgettable season with a stunning production of West Side Story. Bursting with passion, humor, dancing, and some of the most memorable music ever written, this company premiere tells the American tale of two star-crossed lovers and the prejudices that keep them apart. For more information or to purchase tickets, the public can visit operasj.org or call (408) 437-4450 (open Monday through Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm).

How Shop with a Cop Collaborates with the Community to Help Our Youth This has been an unprecedented era for law enforcement. Now more than ever, police agencies need to find ways to instill confidence and build bridges of trust — one truss at a time. Youth outreach has the potential to do that and can pay dividends in long-lasting relationships and a renewed confidence in our nation’s police officers. Officers enjoy reading aloud with the students. Investing in youth and helping them achieve their full potential is key to the safety, security, and economic vibrancy of our city, state, and nation. Here’s to their future. Shop with a Cop SVhas allied with communities of color and low-income communities to pursue social justice, address systemic causes of poverty and dismantle inequity and racism. We also must acknowledge we all have more work to do. Shop with a Cop fosters continued mutual respect between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Through engendering trust in the community and humanizing the person behind the badge, children see police officers through a positive lens. We strive to build bridges of collaboration and strategically invest in education, leadership development, and capacity building program to help under-served youth reach their fullest potential. For the past 14 years, the Shop with a Cop Foundation Silicon Valley hosts over 200+ under-served children for a holiday shopping spree with local Bay Area police officers.

For many of the children, this special opportunity becomes the only holiday experience they will have. Some participants are selected from the Readers Are Leaders reading campaign at local elementary schools, where they “earn” their way to the shopping spree. Other children participating are living in traumatic crises from the loss of a parent, domestic violence, and other tragedies. With a uniformed police officer by their side during the shopping spree, each child receives a $150.00 Target gift card to shop for gifts for their family members and for themselves. The whole premise is to humanize the people behind

the badge so that children can grow up trusting the police. This unique program brings the holiday spirit to children who need it most and hopes to build safer communities for our future. Our goal is to raise $50,000.00 (total budget costs) for this annual event. We have not reached our goal this season, so any monetary donation would be greatly appreciated! 100% of all donations will go to this special program. All monies stay local. To donate visit our website, http://www.shopwithacopsv. org or Venmo @SWAC-SV We are a registered 501 (c) 3 charitable organization.

Celebrate the holidays with TheatreWorks Silicon Valley

For many, Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life has become as synonymous with the holiday season as candy canes or eggnog. This year, experience this yuletide favorite in a new way with TheatreWorks Silicon Valley’s It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play, performing December 1-26. Celebrating its 75th anniversary, the enduring classic film starring James Stewart and Donna Reed almost didn’t stand the test of time. In its 1946 release, It’s A Wonderful Life was critically acclaimed but failed to win any awards, up against postwar blockbusters like The Best Years of Our Lives, ultimately fading into obscurity for decades. The film gained

a second life when it entered the public domain, frequenting televisions across America. It’s A Wonderful Life makes an annual sold-out run at Palo Alto’s Stanford Theatre. Sadly, that theatre remains closed, but this beloved story finds a new Palo Alto home at the Lucie Stern Theatre with TheatreWorks’s new stage production. It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play offers the film as a 1940s era radio play, complete with live foley-style sound effects. Presented in a fun, theatrical style, this live radio-play version of the holiday favorite is told by a diverse cast, including Moses Villarama, Sarita Ocón, Phil Wong, Luisa Sermol, and

Hershey Felder returns to TheatreWorks Silicon Valley in “Hershey Felder as Monsieur Chopin” January 19 - February 13, 2022 at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts. Photo Credit: Hershey Felder Presents

Todd Cerveris. These five nimble actors take on dozens of roles, sharing George Bailey’s iconic tale of love, loss, and redemption on Christmas Eve. On-demand streaming will also be available for audiences to enjoy this theatrical treat from home. Whether you’re a veteran viewer or it’s your first time visiting Bedford Falls, It’s a Wonderful Life should be on your must-watch list this season. Its message still rings true today—much as the community rallies behind George Bailey in his time of need, Silicon Valley communities have supported and uplifted their members, despite not being able to gather in person. Giovanna

Sardelli, who directs the play, says, “It’s A Wonderful Life is about celebrating those who often feel unseen and unvalued. It offers hope about who we can become, and it reminds us of the best within ourselves—our ability to overcome adversity, to support one another, to envision a better world together. This is why people return to it time and time again.” Also, something to look forward to in 2022: virtuoso pianist/ performer Hershey Felder is returning to TheatreWorks in the musical masterpiece Hershey Felder as Monsieur Chopin, performing January 19- February 13, 2022 at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts.

Felder dazzles as brilliant Polish composer Fryderyk Chopin, illuminating an exclusive piano lesson with this musical master. In this stunning solo show, the “Poet of the Piano” tells his romantic story while sharing dazzling performances of his compositions. Tickets for this highly-anticipated show make excellent holiday gifts for theatre fans and music lovers alike. Tickets for It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play (December 1-26, 2021) and Hershey Felder as Monsieur Chopin (January 19-February 13, 2022) are now available at theatreworks.org or by calling (877)-662-8978.

Child Advocates of Silicon Valley: LIFTING UP Foster Youth Give the gift of hope this holiday season by supporting local foster youth Child Advocates of Silicon Valley, an independent nonprofit formed in 1986, is dedicated to serving foster children from birth to 21 years old that have been placed in the Santa Clara County foster care system for having experienced abuse, neglect, and/or abandonment. Child Advocates provides them with the nurturing support and resources needed to thrive. About 1,000 children are in the Santa Clara foster care system at any given time. Child Advocates strives to ensure every one of these children has a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Volunteer. These volunteers are community members appointed by a judge to be a mentor, advocate, and voice for a child/ youth in foster care. Zianna and Joelle exemplify the kind of support a foster youth can receive from a CASA. Earlier this year, Zianna, a teen foster youth, and her CASA Volunteer, Joelle, began navigating the college application process. They applied for scholarships and financial aid. With Joelle’s support, Zianna is now attending UC Davis, is enrolled in several programs to support her transition into college, and has received scholarships and funding to cover housing, tuition, and books.

Child Advocates also works to build enduring community partnerships to broaden and strengthen its impact. In 2020, Child Advocates launched partnerships with eight local organizations, including the Children’s Discovery Museum and the Happy Hollow Park and Zoo, which have agreed to offer free resources, programming, and/

or free admission for foster children and the volunteers. Child Advocates depends on individual, corporate, community, foundation, and government partners to make their work possible, and there are many ways to help yearround. Donations also help recruit, train and support new volunteers.

Consider contributing online at childadvocatessv.org/donate/ or contact development@ childadvocatessv.org to learn about opportunities to become a sponsor at one of the three Child Advocate signature fundraising events. The annual Holiday Toy Drive is also collecting gifts through December 5. Make

a donation or purchase a gift from their Amazon Charity list at childadvocatessv.org/ holidaytoydrive/. You can help LIFT UP foster youth this holiday season. Learn more at childadvocatessv.org. Sobrato Center of Nonprofits 509 Valley Way, Bldg. 2, Milpitas childadvocatessv.org

Smuin Returns to Live, In-theatre Performances

Fiercely festive, with a little something for everyone—that’s Smuin’s “The Christmas Ballet!” After 21 months of virtual and outdoor performances, San Francisco’s premier contemporary ballet company will return with live, in-theatre performances of its beloved holiday program around the Bay Area (Mountain View, Carmel, San Francisco). Set to holiday tunes and featuring ballet, tap, jazz, and swing, two acts are packed with both breathtaking classical ballet and festive contemporary numbers. Along with the unveiling of two stunning world premieres, this year’s edition of “The Christmas Ballet” includes many fan favorites, such as the everpopular “Santa Baby” number, featuring the “world’s longest feather boa.”

The first act, Classical Christmas, shows off the company’s classical style, with joyful celebrations of the season. Dressed in snowy white, the dancers perform works ranging from Bach’s stately “Magnificat,” to the festive “Wassail,” to playful dances highlighting winter’s wonders. The Cool Christmas second act features a red-hot costume change along with a spirited medley of contemporary festive numbers, with a dazzling display of tap, swing, and much more. Among favorites returning to the stage are Smuin’s sultry “Christmas in New Orleans” and the spirited tap dance “Bells of Dublin,” as well as a charming sock-hop in “Winter Weather” and dancing conifers in “Droopy Little Christmas Tree.” “The Christmas Ballet”

has something delightful for audiences of every age. For those unable to attend in person, “The Christmas Ballet” can also be enjoyed from home. This year’s program will be offered as a virtual on-demand streaming option available from Thanksgiving through Christmas. (And a special note to Smuin fans: the streaming version offers an exclusive “Santa Baby” segment featuring archival footage of the company’s first siren, now Artistic Director Celia Fushille, seen in the role she originated.) Smuin’s “The Christmas Ballet” will tour the Bay Area, with shows in Mountain View (December 2-5), Carmel (Dec 10-11), and San Francisco (December 16-26). Tickets are available by calling 415-912-1899 or visiting www.smuinballet.org.

Meet the Women of California Interiors & Design Inc. California Interiors & Design Inc. has been building, designing, remodeling and furnishing homes for decades. Founder Mary Seaton began her career in real estate and had purchased and built her first home by the age of 21. Although she currently holds both an AS and BS degree in unrelated fields, her vast knowledge of design, build and function comes from many years in the trade. It was natural for her to open a showroom hosting custom upholstery along with everything else a home would need. Mary’s daughter, Collette, joined the company after getting a degree from Cal Berkeley and trying her hand at law school. Collette is a very integral part of the business. She is extremely detailoriented and knowledgeable when it comes to layout, material selection and design. Her daughter, Amaya, is only 8, but has literally grown up in the showroom. She’s a child prodigy and is often heard telling Google, “show me a modern, contemporary home, not a farmhouse.” Amaya sketches houses she likes and has been drawing 3D renderings since she was five. She has aspirations to become an architect and Mary and Collette are sure that, that will come to fruition. See How Sail Internet is Making a Difference for Local Communities For the past 6 years, local start-up Sail Internet has been addressing the problems of consumer choice and access to high-speed internet. In areas where the big names dominate, Sail creates choice by bringing competitive high-speed internet with unlimited data, requiring no contract, with flat pricing. A larger — and somewhat surprising — problem in the Bay Area is the lack of access to affordable, highspeed internet. Sail brings service to many mobile home parks that have traditionally had little choice in internet providers. Recently, the company worked with Gardner Family Health to install the infrastructure needed to serve Summerset Mobile Estates in Alviso, CA who previously had no option beyond DSL. With fiber at its core, Sail uses a mixture of fixed wireless and other technologies to deliver high-speed internet to businesses, singlefamily homes, and multi-unit complexes in the San Francisco Bay area and San Diego area. While growing rapidly in San Jose and other cities, Sail looks for businesses and residential homes willing to host equipment that can broadcast a signal to residents nearby. Where available, Sail brings a fiber connection directly to homes and buildings resulting in gigabit internet speeds. Sail Gigabit service is now available at

select multi-unit residential communities and multiple businesses in the Bay Area. Sail was founded in 2015 by experts and innovators from the internet access industry. Led by Kevin Fisher, PhD, Stanford University, former Engineering VP at 2Wire and Ikanos and George Ginis, PhD, Stanford University, former Engineering and Marketing VP at ASSIA, Sail requires no contracts, has no data caps for customer use, and is net neutral. Sail’s speeds exceed most ISPs’ basic packages while offering competitive pricing. Sail’s speeds and coverage areas are detailed on their website at sailinternet.com.

How CoCo Farms is Helping the Community During the Holiday season, it’s all about sharing, spreading holiday cheer, and most importantly-- giving to those who need it most. As a private business residing in the area, CoCo Farms understands how important it is to be involved in local communities. This year, the cannabis retailer partnered with leaders in Antioch, including Mayor Lamar Thorpe, to create CoCo Cares, a program to fight the issue of Homelessness in the city of Antioch. CoCo Cares works with local agencies to provide good-paying jobs, companypaid health care, and permanent housing for those who are homeless or about to become homeless in order to give them the opportunity to function and be productive within the community. With these efforts, we hope to reduce the number of individuals “on the street” and alleviate the workload of city officials and law enforcement who are also working to take care of the community. Aside from efforts made through the CoCo Cares program, CoCo Farms has also partnered with Newberry’s B.L.O.C.K.—who focus on giving underprivileged youths the opportunity to get involved in organized sports, Loaves & Fishes, including sponsoring a Golf Tournament where all efforts went toward providing hot and nutritious prepared meals, delivered and served to the Bay Area community, and Opportunity Junction who provides

training, support, work experience, and placement assistance, which helps motivated Contra Costa job seekers launch careers that lead to financial security. “It’s important for us that the cannabis experience is a

positive one in the cities we do business in.” says President of CoCo Farms, Martin Wesley, “We’re looking to do more as we grow, we’ll be launching a program at Vtown Farms (sister location in Vallejo) and Concord in 2022”

This season, CoCo Farms will be hosting a Toy Drive within the store and other locations including — Vtown Farms, Del Rey Farms, Rio Vista Farms, and Valley Farms. Bins will be placed in the store for

Toy donations. Donations will be handed out during the Mad Hatter Festival held in Vallejo on December 4th. From our Farms to your Holidays, CoCo Farms | enjoycocofarms.com
