t Schwab, we believe in the power of investing to transform people’s lives. Chuck Schwab founded our company more than 40 years ago to challenge Wall Street and provide more Americans the opportunity to benefit from investing. Then, just as today, we at Schwab believe that too often the industry gets in the way of investor success. We see this as a business opportunity, and our strategy for pursuing it is simple: We see the world through clients’ eyes. This perspective guides our actions and behaviors as a company. It’s how we disrupt the status quo on behalf of our clients – the individual investors, independent advisors, employers and others we serve – and how we challenge long-held assumptions about products, service and solutions. At Schwab, what unites our employees is a shared belief that the work we do can make a direct impact on our clients. Seeing our business through clients’ eyes also influences the way we serve clients. It keeps us focused on fulfilling our purpose, living our values and earning our clients’ trust. Life at Schwab is inclusive – a place where people with different interests and different backgrounds can work together in an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect. We are dedicated to building and maintaining a dynamic organization and culture that reflect the individual strengths of every person who is part of the company. Through diversity we gain a wider range of perspectives and experiences, which benefits everyone and helps us see through clients’ eyes. Being recognized as a great place to work is very important to us, and we are very proud to again be named a Bay Area Top Workplace -- for the third year in a row. We are also proud to have received the Gallup Great Workplace Award for four consecutive years, and to have been recognized as a Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality (100% rating on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index since 2004).

Schwab has a long history of service, not only for its clients but also for its communities. During the company’s annual Volunteer Week, Schwab volunteers decorate onesies for San Francisco’s Homeless Prenatal Program, which provides care and support to more than 3,500 families each year. We survey employees at participating employers using either paper surveys or an online survey application. Each of the statements has a positivity score. The positivity score on the Positivity page shows the overall percentage of positive responses for each statement. Responders rank our statements on a 7 point Likert scale, ranging from‘Strongly Disagree’to‘Strongly Agree’, so the score shown is the percentage of responders who answered‘Slightly Agree’, ‘Agree’or‘Strongly Agree’to each statement. Each of the statements has been tested to ensure it has a high correlation with how employees feel about their workplace, which is calculated by correlating the statement responses to a control question which asks each employee to rate their workplace on a scale of zero to 99. The Statement Importance page lists the statements that were part of the survey.

We require a response rate of at least 35 percent for employees based in the Bay Area. In addition, employers with 85 or fewer Bay Area employees must have at least 30 responders. We encourage employers to survey all employees, but large employers can choose to randomly sample their Bay Area employees. At least 500 employees must be included in the random sample for employers 2,500 or less. For those employers over 2,500 but less than 5,000 employees, we require 20 percent minimum distributed. For employers 5,000 or more the minimum is 1,000 surveys distributed.

We categorize the employers into size bands because smaller employers tend to score higher than midsize employers, and midsize employers tend to score higher than large employers. We then rank the employers within their size band based solely on the employee responses to the survey statements. The top employers in each size band are then selected as the Top Workplaces in the Bay Area for 2015.

Community Involvement Community service runs the gamut By Carole Lucido Correspondent

T

he range and style of charitable giving and philanthropy varies widely among the Top Bay Area Workplaces. For some, giving and community service is linked to the corporate mission or identity while for others it is a facet of operations that brings employees together to work on causes outside of their normal roles. There is no doubt that corporate giving pays dividends in terms of social responsibility, public relations and drawing millennial employees who may be looking for a greater connection with the causes they support. East Bay Innovation Inc. is an example of a company that has tailored its community service efforts to coincide with its mission, which is to serve individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities so that they may live in their own homes, have jobs, and connect with their communities. At East Bay Innovation, community service is focused on building communities that accept those with disabilities. Northstar Memorial Group, a company that operates four funeral and memorial parks, celebrates diversity and the traditions of different cultures. They host celebrations complete with lively music, entertainment, food and refreshments. They welcome the community for holidays like Dia de los Muertos in November, two events to celebrate Chinese culture, Memorial Day and a celebration for Black History month. Electronic Arts Inc. of Redwood City houses a nonprofit organization on its campus. GlassLab is“exploring the potential for digital games to serve both as potent learning environments and as real-time assessments of student learning,”according to its website. This summer, EA also plans to host“Girls Who Code”– a day for female youth to learn about careers and opportunities in technology. The company offers a donation-matching program, which empowers employees to give back to the local community. KeyPoint Credit Union offers a financial literacy program at San Jose State University as well as programs to support the Bill Wilson Center and the March of Dimes. GoDaddy offers six programs for charitable giving: GoDaddy Gives (financial support for nonprofit partners); GoDaddy Inspires (paid time for employees to volunteer for their choice of charities); GoDaddy Dollars for Doers (grants); GoDaddy Shares (discounts on website services); GoDaddy Matches (matching funds); and Round Up for Charity (customers round up their GoDaddy purchase to the nearest dollar and donate the difference to charity).

KeyPoint Credit Union

The FedEx Northern California community project list for 2014-2015 fills nearly a full page. he 2015 Top Workplaces in Bay Area show great diversity in size and sector. There’s motor vehicle company Tesla Motors, with more than 7,500 employees, and Clari, with 40. What common thread winds through these 100 Top Workplaces? It’s not the perks, though there are many great perks represented in the Top 100, such Mountz Inc., who holds monthly workshops with outside facilitators that practice in the health and wellness field. Our research of employee feedback concludes the common thread is having a healthy organization.

Workplace connections That begs the question, what is a healthy organization and what role do people play in it? Healthy organizations thrive on people who feel connected to their workplace through meaningful work and the belief their company is moving in the right direction. That gives executive leadership the task of ensuring their employees buy in to where the company is going and how it is getting there. Executives are challenged to create a sense of connection between company and employee. Think about where you work or volunteer your time. Do you buy in to where the organization is heading and how it is getting there? Do you feel a connection?

Employees among the Bay Area News Group Top Workplaces buy in to where they’re going and how they are getting there. So much so, they are not afraid to use the “L-word”when it comes to their jobs —“I love my job.”For example, an employee at Intacct Corporation commented:“I feel that senior executives have the employees’best interests and the industry’s best interests at heart.”

Comprehensive programs focus on education, child welfare and behavioral health. The diverse and vulnerable population served includes 49 percent African American, 26 percent Hispanic/Latino and 18 percent White, with more than 90 percent who fall below the federal poverty line. Their mission remains rooted in the belief that ending the cycle of poverty depends upon providing accessible, early and progressive intervention in the lives of children and youth, while delivering comprehensive services to build engaged and effective families.

Organizational health In eight years of research with millions of workers across the United States, WorkplaceDynamics has determined more money or perks do not account for the difference between an average or poor workplace. Employees want to work at a place that is organizationally healthy. By promoting organizational health, employees, leadership and investors are aligned. Employees want high levels of organizational health because it enriches their working life. Investors want high levels of organizational health because it makes their companies more successful. Good leaders want to serve both groups. And when more employees are fulfilled and more organizations are successful, communities benefit. ■
