elcome to Ontario — Southern California’s Next Urban Center. Located just east of Los Angeles, Ontario is the gateway to all the region has to offer. Getting here is easy. LA/Ontario International Airport is Southern California’s most stress-free full-service airport and offers a wide range of daily flights to most major cities. If you are driving in, Ontario is centrally located at the intersection of Interstates 10 and 15 and is served by Route 60. Staying in Ontario is great. Whether you are here for business or pleasure, Ontario offers everything from full-service luxury hotels to low-cost options for those on a budget. Ontario is home to fabulous shopping at Ontario Mills and within minutes of exciting entertainment, thrilling attractions and auto racing, outdoor adventure, championship golf and casino action. Plus, Ontario offers dining and nightlife options for everyone — from family dining to comedy clubs and live music. In Fall of 2008, Ontario celebrated the grand opening of its new Citizens Business Bank Arena. Built and owned by the City, and managed by AEG, the Arena hosts a full slate of headline entertainment including exciting concerts and family shows, basketball and Ontario’s very own minor league hockey team, the Ontario Reign. The Arena is the heart of Ontario’s business and lifestyle district and serves the entertainment needs of the entire region. Ontario’s Historic Downtown Euclid Avenue District takes you back in time. Go see the old-fashioned mule car and the culture of Ontario’s Museum of History and Art. You can watch live music at Ontario’s historic bandstand, sample olives at the world famous Graber Olive House and taste wine at two of California’s oldest wineries. For event planners, Ontario offers a wide range of meeting facilities including the state-of-the-art Ontario Convention Center. A mere two blocks from the LA/Ontario International Airport, the Convention Center features contemporary architecture and modern amenities, as well as customized catering and special event coordination. With a great climate and within easy reach of all that Southern California has to offer, you’ll find everything you desire in Ontario. Whether you are looking for small town pleasures or big city treasures, Ontario has it all right here. Play and stay as long as you like. Sincerely, Paul Leon, Mayor

O

ntario has always been known as great destination value. Perhaps it’s due to our location right in the center of all things Southern California, which makes us very easy to reach. Maybe it’s because Ontario Convention Center’s easy-in, easy-out proximity to a major airport is primarily served by budgetfriendly Southwest Airlines. Or it could be because of a staff that works hard to help event and meeting planners maximize their budgets and grow attendance. At a time when travel budgets are shrinking, we’ve expanded our technology capabilities to including simulcast, live interaction, web casting and webinars so more people can attend your event without traveling. Meeting planners tell me that they truly enjoy working with our hotel partners, the City of Ontario, the Ontario International Airport and the talented team here at the Ontario Convention Center. They tell me we share a can-do attitude that makes every event special — no matter what the budget limitations may be. Easy access. Cutting-edge technology. Helpful and friendly staff. I think it’s the confluence of all those things and more that make Ontario such a great place to hold events. I hope you’ll consider holding your next event at Ontario Convention Center. You’re always welcome here. Bob Brown, Ontario Convention Center   General Manager and CEO

It’s all right here

O

ntario is a gem with many facets. While many cities have some of what Ontario has to offer, few have all of the elements. To put it another way, Ontario is the complete package. First, there’s shopping. Ontario Mills — the largest single-story mall on the West Coast — has more than 200 manufacturer and retail outlets, brandname and specialty stores all under one roof. In another part of the city, the historic district along Euclid Avenue offers a different type of shopping experience. More than two dozen stores and shops are there, all within walking distance of each other, selling antiques, candies, clothing, flowers, furniture,

souvenirs and more. The entertainment in Ontario can’t be beat. Citizens Business Bank Arena attracts top music acts (Neil Diamond and the “American Idol” finalists), family shows (Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus), and world champion sports teams (Los Angeles Lakers). For movie fans, the AMC and Edwards theaters at Ontario Mills screen everything from art house films to the latest Hollywood blockbusters. And if video games are your thing, Ontario Mills also has Dave & Busters and Gameworks. Both have hundreds of games ranging from such classics as Ms. Pac Man and Donkey Kong to shoot ’em up crime-fighters to race-car simulators.

Want to relax? It’s hard to beat a lazy afternoon under a tree. Ontario has more than 400 acres of parks, including the 150-acre Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park, where visitors can enjoy pedal boats on the lake, fishing for trout and catfish, swimming, a picnic lunch and playing horseshoes. Soccer enthusiasts can kick around a ball at the new Ontario Soccer Park. Bring the clubs and play 18 holes at Whispering Lakes Golf Course or the Arnold Palmer-designed Empire Lakes Golf Course. And thanks to Ontario’s central location, beaches, mountains, deserts, theme parks, casinos and many other Southern California playgrounds are a short drive away. There is a veritable feast of dining options in Ontario. There are unique experiences for the entire family or a romantic dinner for two. All of the major restaurant chains also are here, offering familiar places to go for breakfast, lunch and dinner 24 hours a day. Ontario, which is nearly 50 square miles and has a population of 175,000, traces its roots to the arrival of George and William Chaffey more than a century ago from Canada (hence, the name Ontario). The brothers and other early settlers planted lemon and orange groves and built fruit-packing plants. Later, grapes were planted, starting the region on its path to becoming a producer of worldclass wines. That farming heritage is still on display today at places like the Graber Olive House, an historic landmark where olives continue to be produced. Shopping, entertainment, sports, recreation, dining, history and more means that Ontario has something for everyone.

The Inland Empire region has a long wine-making tradition.

Tales of the grape Vast vineyards once spanned 20,000 acres By GINO L. FILIPPI

W

hile California is the acknowledged Wineland of America, it may come as a surprise that Ontario shares a winemaking heritage with the historic Cucamonga Valley which is still home to some of the state’s oldest vines. No fewer than five producing wineries that offer tastings and tours still survive. Here’s the real juice on vintners offering expanded and distinctive selections, where novice and expert enthusiasts alike are sure to discover favorites. But first, some background: Cucamonga-Guasti viticulture history is as complex as the old head-trained Mission, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Zinfandel grapevines that dominated the landscape for more than 150 years. Much of the area’s vintage prosperity is owed to Secondo Guasti (1859-1927), who

founded the Italian Vineyard Co. in 1883 and built it into a gigantic wine enterprise. By 1917, Guasti was advertising IVC’s holdings — 5,000 contiguous “vine to vine” acres — as the “largest in the world.” Ontario wine historian Reno J. Morra recalls when the scenery in the valley was nothing short of majestic — reminiscent of Italy’s Piedmont region that his parents and other countrymen left behind. They immigrated to towns named Cucamonga, Etiwanda, Fontana, Guasti, Ontario and Mira Loma, filled with hope and desire for a better life in a new wine country, and a desire for their children to become Americans. In 1919, Cucamonga-Guasti vines spanned more than 20,000 acres,

more than in Sonoma and twice as many as Napa County when Prohibition was enacted. Morra recalls a summertime flight in the 1940s over the vast vineyards in an Air Force training plane. “As we flew above, thousands of acres of lush green vines filled the valley floor,” he says. “It was the most beautiful sight my eyes had ever seen. ... “We followed the foothills from east to west and circled around south of the airport. My only wish was for others to have seen the view. If only I had a camera.” Cucamonga Valley was officially approved as an American Viticulture Area in 1995 by the U.S. Department of Treasury as a result of a petition written and filed by myself on behalf of area growers and vintners. This law enables producers to use the words “Cucamonga Valley” on the

plus a cluster of home winemakers. Today, local vintners are growing and producing award-winning vintages. “The advent of technology and sciencebacked winemaking practices eroded away the old-school approaches that were so prevalent from the ’40s to the ’60s,” says Jon McPherson, winemaster at South Coast Winery in Temecula Valley. Thomas Pinney, professor emeritus of English at Pomona College, who wrote “A History of Wine in America: From the Beginnings to Prohibition” (1989) and “From Prohibition to the Present” (2005), references “Cucamonga” and its important role. “Curiously enough, Cucamonga old vines Zinfandel now enjoys a prestige value such as it never had before; but one wonders how secure a tenure on life those old vines can have,” Pinney wrote

Nearby, is Piemonte at the Ontario Center, a 1-million-square-foot mixed-use lifestyle center combining luxury retail, corporate office, urban residential, a full-service hotel, and the new Citizens Business Bank Arena.
