Riverside County Philharmonic 2009-2010

From the President Dear Friends: It’s my pleasure to welcome you to the 50th Anniversary Season of the Riverside County Philharmonic. We’ve planned a concert series designed to enlighten, entertain and celebrate this milestone. This also is the final concert season that our late Music Director Patrick Flynn had a hand in designing and in many ways highlights Patrick’s legacy and lessons for us. This year we are welcoming back a select group of our audiences’ favorite guest artists and introducing some of the most exciting new performers appearing on the world’s concert stages. Leading each concert will be a world-class conductor who is being considered for the Philharmonic’s Music Director position. This is a breathtaking season, full of towering classical compositions and brand new music that will delight and inspire. Patrick believed music was meant to touch the soul, move the heart and make us think. I invite you to come experience all three. Subscribe today to the Philharmonic. Come celebrate our history and be a part of our future. This is a season you won’t want to miss.

What the Critics Are Saying About the Phil “Patrick Flynn, the late conductor and music director of the Riverside County Philharmonic, knew all about the immense talent and quality of the orchestra’s musicians. That’s why, more than a year ago, he programmed Saturday night’s season-ending concert to feature principals performing works of their choice. The result was a concert of serious music – some familiar – some not – all fascinating and exquisitely performed.” Sherli Leonard, The Press Enterprise, April 2009 “The strings were silky smooth, the brass was powerful and precise, and the woodwinds were delightfully bright … the orchestra performed fabulously as a unit, delivering a superb reading of this monumental symphony.” (Beethoven’s Eroica) Mark Benoit, The Press Enterprise, January 2008 “Something exciting happens when the curtain opens on the Riverside County Philharmonic Orchestra. The program, the musicians and the conductor come together to consistently create an event that takes its audience on an amazing journey.” Sherli Leonard, The Press Enterprise, January 2009

2009-2010 Celebrating 50 Years of Great Music “A California success story” (Los Angeles Times) best characterizes the Riverside County Philharmonic’s rapid development and popularity – originally formed in 1958 as a volunteer group of musicians. Each season the 72-member professional orchestra draws cheering audiences from all over the Southland to its classical and pops concerts. The Philharmonic’s many milestones include the West Coast premiere of William Kraft’s Renaissance, Ellen Taffe Zwilich’s Three Pieces for Orchestra, the world premiere of John Williams’ Clarinet Concerto, and the American premiere of Four Pacific Seasons by New Zealander, Gareth Farr. The orchestra has been acclaimed by local and out-of-town critics for compelling performances of core repertory, for its unique programming and exceptional roster of guest soloists. On several occasions, reviewers have dubbed the Philharmonic: “Best orchestra in Southern California.” Much of the credit for the Philharmonic’s success belongs to late Music Director Patrick Flynn, who for more than 18 years carefully guided the group’s development into the ensemble it is today. Currently the orchestra presents a season of four performances in its home venue, the historic Riverside Municipal Auditorium in downtown Riverside. The Philharmonic is also in high demand throughout the region, including Cerritos, Lake Arrowhead, Lake Elsinore, Fallbrook, Rancho Cucamonga, and Temecula. It performs the annual 4th of July concerts at Riverside’s National Cemetery. With these, and the free pops concerts in local parks, the orchestra has increased its audiences nearly ten-fold since 2001. The Philharmonic family is deeply committed to connecting with young people throughout the Inland Empire. In 1998 it established the Adventures in Music program for Riverside and San Bernardino County schools, annually bringing the magic of music to thousands of youths. Continuing its long history of community collaboration, in 2008, the Philharmonic inaugurated a unique partnership with Performance Riverside, co-presenting programs from their respective seasons as part of the Target® Family Series. The California Arts Council has consistently listed the Riverside County Philharmonic in its Touring Arts Directory since the year 2000. Under the direction of a committed Board of Directors and a new Foundation comprised of community leaders, the Riverside County Philharmonic continues with vigor its mission as one of the leading orchestras in the Southwest, with a goal of inspiring every segment of the community with the love and excitement of great music … Visit www.thephilharmonic.org for more information.

Make a Contribution Established in 1959, the Riverside County Philharmonic continues to fulfill its mission to over 25,000 constituents annually. The Philharmonic offers a complete concert series and is actively engaged in many community partnerships. Along with orchestral performances, the orchestra’s educational programs continue to cultivate the next generation of music lovers through their educational programs. There have been cuts in government funding and local corporations’ charitable giving for several years. Ticket revenue constitutes only one-third of the orchestra’s budget. This results in relying heavily on the generous support of donors and sponsors to bridge these financial gaps. Donors are the lifeline to this organization’s future stability and success. The Philharmonic is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, so the full amount of your gift is tax deductible. Once your gift is received, we will send you an acknowledgement letter to use for tax preparation. Some companies match their employees’ charitable gifts, providing the Philharmonic significant additional funding. If you or your spouse is an employee, director or retiree of a company, contact the personnel office to inquire if there is a corporate matching gift program.

Outreach Programs Adventures in Music The primary goal of Adventures in Music (AIM) is to increase the ability of local school children to understand, appreciate, enjoy and participate in all styles of music. AIM is specifically designed to help compensate for the lack of musical education in public schools. The Inland Empire is rich in cultural resources, yet its children are often unable to experience them. AIM creates opportunities for the diverse student population to examine, explore and enjoy the cultural richness of the region. For most students, Adventures in Music provides the only comprehensive and participatory music education experience they will receive in school. Young People’s Concert Full-fledged symphony concerts are held at Riverside Municipal Auditorium during the academic year. Here, students experience music in a formal concert setting. Fashioned in the style of Leonard Bernstein’s “Young Peoples’ Concerts,” these performances provide an informative and userfriendly setting for the students, many of whom are first time concertgoers. Informances – The Philharmonic also dispatches small ensembles – a brass trio, a woodwind trio, or a string trio – to perform at elementary schools. These ensemble performances demonstrate to the students the sounds and mechanics of the instruments, fun facts about the composers and how musicians collaborate on musical performances.

Heartstrings The Philharmonic’s Board and staff recognize the nurturing benefits that live, symphonic music can have on the soul. They established Heartstrings, a program that opens doors for individuals who lack the resources, financial or otherwise, to attend concerts. By targeting this audience-at-risk, the Philharmonic helps these attendees increase their self esteem and puts them in touch with who they really are by means of the great unifier, music. Heartstrings, started in 1999, has become tremendously successful primarily because of the sustaining partnerships established between the Philharmonic, local nonprofit groups and organizations and leading businesses. This cooperative support has made available more than 2,000 free tickets each season to those who might not otherwise be able to attend a Philharmonic concert. Among the ticket beneficiaries are individuals reached through the following community organizations: • Inland Aids Project • Salvation Army • Olive Crest Children’s Homes • Operation Safehouse • Whiteside Manor • Riverside County Department of Mental Health • Victoria Court Retirement Home • David and Margaret Home Braille Institute • Alternatives to Domestic Violence Visit www.thephilharmonic.org for more information.
