TOWN OF H OP E CU LT U RA L C E N T E R CE L E B RATI N G TH E CU LTU RE + HERITAGE OF HO PE

The Town of Hope Cultural Center is located in eastern central Indiana. Local town members desired to enhance Hope’s downtown square, while also maintaining its treasured heritage. A mix of old and new architecture adorns the town square, including this original Irwin Union Bank, designed by Harry Wesse + Associates. The challenge of this was to design in relation to a significant modern building, while maintaining the historic preservation. Designing for a small town requires a cohesive combination of disparate functions into one building, while preserving and promoting Hope as a historical destination. The Hope Cultural Center includes a visitors center, seed bank storage for Bartholomew County, flexible interactive classroom space for community members to learn about the seed bank or other offered courses, local art guild gallery and a letter carriers and postal museum. The outdoor space, with rooftop seating and small amphitheater, create community space for residents and visitors to gather for various types of events. With the extended addition, visitors are drawn back into the space that is open to the public. The sense of community is strengthened here when people gather for coffee or for a movie screening. This cultural center gives the first impression of what Hope has to offer. The design is innovative, informative, welcoming and engaging, including space for residents and visitors to come together to celebrate the culture and heritage of Hope.

ON C E LOVE D P HOTO GRAPH Y ST U DY DI G I TA L PH OTOG RPA HY

This series of photographs stems from my attraction to artifacts from the past. They all have stories to tell of a life full of much love. The torn and taped corner of a box tells a story of childhood hands excitedly ripping off the lid to play their favorite game. The tarnished and scratched baking tin tells the story of producing decades of savory treats. The weathered and peeling building frame tells a story of strength and loyalty as it has provided shelter for years and years. The chipped and splintered keys of the piano tell a story of practice and dedication that led to a lifetime appreciate of music. These artifacts were once an important part of one’s everyday life. I can’t help but think about how they were once loved so much that they now visibly display wear and tear. They were touched so many times they now struggle to hold themselves together. Although, many of these objects are no longer used daily, they hold many stories and secrets from past experiences, origins and owners. With each new day they usually sit, watching the modern world go by, remembering when they were once treasured and hoping that they are never forgotten.
