We have it real treat in sbore for us at the June meeting. Dr. ~val ter Breckenridge, author of the classic work on Minnesota herpetology, Reptiles and Arnr phibians of Minnesota, will be our speaker. Along with his stories of the days when he did his studies, he will show his movie on the ecology of an island in the Mississippi River near his home. This is a repeat of a meeting way back in August of 1983. As before, Dr. Breckenridge will be available to autograph his book for those ''hounds'' among us, so be sure and bring your copye TI1.e "critter" will be large turtles and tortoises. Use your imagination on this one. It can be large for its species (thus some might be only a few inches), or large for its area, or just plain LARGE. This would be a great meeting to bring your friendsito. See you there!

The May meeting was another good one. Dr.. William Schmid of the U of M spoke on his research into the hibernation of amphibians. The program was illustrated with slides and most informative. He also had reprints available of a paper he had published in Science in 1982. A special thanks to him for these! Attendance was 68.

In 1961, our guest speaker for the June meeting, Dr. Walter Breckenridge, and the 700 member Minnesota Ornithologists union, petitioned the legislature to adopt the Common Loon as Minnesota's state bird. The rest is history. Minnesota has a state fish (Walleye), state mushroom (Morel), state rock (agate), and more. Minnesota has no state reptile! The MHS Board feels we should get them to adopt a state reptile. John Moriarty will be spearheading this project. The Blanding's Turtle would be an ideal choice! *--Jd, The Third Annual .MHS Picnic will be held at Parkers Park, a stone's throw from Parkers Lake in Plymouth.

The picnic site is about 10 minutes from Twin Cities Reptiles. August 17th is the date (Sunday). 8 to 11 AM is the traditional champagne breakfast and 11 to ? is the untraditional MHS Picnic. I and the Board members would like to make this a very special picnic. If you have any ideas or would like to volunteer for the committee, give me a call. --Jdd, Dr. Dan Keyler has filmed a segment of Newton's Apple to be aired this fall. Rules and Regulations Governing Use of University Rooms (1)

All activities must be sponsored or co-sponso~edby the university; all publicity must be approved by the University; and any admission charges are to be collected by the university.

Persons reserving University rooms are responsible for supervising use of rooms and assume liability for special custodial service, special equipment, damage to rooms and equipment, or loss of equipment.

Help A Hapless Herp Alas, there were no hapless herps available at the May meeting. As of right now we have some possibilites for the June meeting, but nothing definite as of yet. Keep your fingers crossed!

. Refreshments The refreshments nor tae ~ymeeting were provided by none other than Helen Schave! Thanks to Helen from MHS! We do need more volunteers for refreshments, and you may be the one we are looking for. If you are interested, please give Helen a call.

MHS will soon have a new feature for new members. It will be a Welcome Package tOat all new members will receive. It will have information, an MHS sticker, a few free raffle tickets, and some reprints of MHS articles. Coming soon! This is something we need and it shouldlhelp to make new members feel welcome.

The Nature Conservancy The Nature Conservancy is a national conservation organization, with its premier chapter in Minnesota. TNC is mainly a land preservation organization. They work on protecting unique and rare habitats by working with land owners or as necessary land acquistion.

The Minnesota chapter publishes a quarterly newsletter which provides information on TNC activities. The newsletter also lists their annual field trip series. These trips help acquaint people with the many species and areas the Conservancy protects. Field trips cover species such as wood turtles, peregrine falcons, orchids, bats, and much more.

MHS Library We have 2 more new books in the Library. They were donated to MRS by the publisher. Be sure to take advantage of them. And a very special thanks for the generous gift! The books are: Snakes of the World by Christopher Mattison Encyclopedia of Reptiles and Amphibians of the World by Craig Adler et al We also have a new procedure for overdue overdue books! 1 month overdue will receive a reminder phone call. 2 months overdue will receive a written notice with instructions on mailing the book. 3 months overdue will result in the name of the member being brought to the Board's attention. If a book is 4 months or more overdue a bill will be sent to the member. We have had been forced to set these new policies because of abuse of library privileges. REPTILES OF MINNESarA by Jim Gerholdt

Northern Water Snake (Nerodia s. sipedon) Description - The Northern Water Snake is a medium sized, heavy bodied snake.

The adult size ranges from 24" to 42", with the record size being 53". The young range from about 7~" to just over 10". The dorsal color ranges from a gray to a brown or tan. There are 30 or more darker bands or blotches that are colored dark brown or red-brown. The venter is white with bright red half moons and dark gray speckling. The pattern becomes obscure with old age. There apparently is a population of unpatterned snakes in Whitewater State Park. The young are more brightly colored than the adults. The scales are smooth and the anal plate is divided.

Range - In Minnesota this snake is known from the counties of Blue Earth, Carver, Dakota, Fillmore, Goodhue, Hennepin, Houston, Isanti, Mower, Nicollet, Olmstead, Pine, Scott, Sherburne, Wabasha, Washington, Winona, and Wright.

Habitat - The Northern Water Snake is a denizen of the edges of streams and rivers. In Minnesota running streams seem to be its preferred habitat. It is also found along swamps. They are often seen basking on logs or the roots of trees.

Habits - This is a semi-aquatic snake. When disturbed it immediately takes to the water and hides under the surface. While totally harmless, this is truly a nasty snake. When grabbbed they will bite viciously and void their cloaca.

They might be compared to a garter snake, only much worse. They may also, if cornered, flatten their bodies to make them appear larger and fiercer.

Food - The primary food of this snake is amphibians. Frogs, toads, salamanders, tadpoles, and fish are regularly consumed. Some mammals and invertebrates are also taken.

Breeding - This is an ovoviparous species. Breeding takes place shortly after emergence from hibernation, and from 10 to 48 young are born in August or September.

Status - None - This species seems to be common where it occurs. It is not a popular snake in the pet trade and habitat destruction and pollution of the water would appear to be its major threats.

"Cri tter of the Month" The "critter" for the May meeting was any amphibian that hibernates naturally for an extended period of time. We had a rather poor turnout on this one, and also some "critters" that do not hibernate naturally. In the future, anything that does not meet the criteria for "critter" will not be allowed to be used.

Please take heed and prevent embarrassment! The "critters" were: Cricket Frog (Acris crepitans) Spotted Salamander (Arnbystorna macula turn) Tiger Salamander (Arnbystoma tigrinurn) Whitefs Tree Frog (Litoria caerulea) Golden Mantella (Mantella aurantiaca) Redback Salmnander (Plethodon cinereus) These were brought by: Fran Frisch Rachael Habeen John Moriarty Thanks to all 3 of the above from MHS!

Herp Hints We had a very busy Herp Hints segment at the May meeting. I hope my notes were able to take most of it down. If you see something I missed, please let me know and I'll correct it. John Moriarty mentioned his "amazon" Corn Snake (72") that seems to intimidate any male she is placed with. This includes proven breeders.

He asked if he needed a male as big as she is. If the male is head on head in the typical colubrid breeding position, his tale doesn't reach hers. D. K. Compton said he had had the same problem with Black Rat Snakes. Any ideas out in MHS land? Dan Keyler related how a bounty placed on the Russell's Viper in the Asian country of Burma had yielded 81,751 snakes in only 2 weeks. This is the 5th largest killer there, but this is a little too much! Therese Samudio had placed her Tiger Salamanders in tap water, and they had gone belly up almost immediately. She was able to revive them and now uses spring water. It was suggested that the water quality was the problem. While chlorine may be leached out by letting water sit, many municipalities now use something different. If chlorarnines are used, they must be filtered out by activated charcoal. Check to see what you local water utility uses and be careful! Becky Filler hadilost a 10 year captive Surinam Toad to water problems. Terry Odegaard st:ggested the use of "old" water. There are products available to neutralize the problem.\A product that was mentioned was Anqual. After this, Bob Duerr proudly ann01.rrlced that his Hissing Cockroach female had laid many eggs. Anybody out there interested? Fran Frisch had received a shipment of Tomato Frogs that had alTived dead. He tried to revive them but to no avail. Joe Fisbein asked what was the best type of snake cage, glass or wood? Ann Porwoll said that screen lids can cause nose rub. Terry Odegaard pOinted out that wood cages (front openers) can be stacked to save room. Ted Schave felt that wood cages were easier to hea.t than glass ones. The bottom line is what you like the best They both have advantages and disadvantages. Above all, be sure that whatever you use is escape proof! Nancy Haig pointed out that wood should always be sealed.

B.affle We had a very busy raffle at the May meeting. The total proceeds were $33.75, which is pretty good. We had some real ftm type prizes for this one. Tom Schmitz won ,"gummy ftogs" , Dave Hoppe won a watercolor original by Fran, Pam Gerholdt won a grab bag ~leftovers from the White Snake Sale), Vince Emerson won a wildlife print, and then he won again and picked a toy snake, Aaron Hampton won the mate to Vince's snake (maybe they can set up a breeding loan), and last but surely not least, Helen Schave won a "thing maker" kit. Let's hope she doesn't use it to make cookies! ~nd Fran Frisch won a concrete lawn frog.

We have received a number of prints of turtles and tortoises from the Gopher Tortoise Council. These will be appearing in the MHS Newsletter as fillers. MHS would like to extend a special thanks to them for sending these to us. We have also received a set of original drawings from Joe Matzke for use in-the Newsletter. There were some in last's month issue. A special thanks to Joe!

Breeding Notes Breedings from the May AAZPA Newsletter Woodland Park Zoo (Seattle) Hatches Endangered Turtles Woodland Park Zoo hatched its first ever Yellow-Spotted Sidenecked Turtles (Podocnemis unifilis) on 22-23 February, to become the third American zoo t9 smccessfully breed this endangered South American reptile. Other successes were recorded at Forth Worth Zoological Park and Columbus Zoological Gardens.

Four of thirteen eggs incubated at 85 F. in a soil/moss mixture hatched after 63 and 64 days. More than 60 eggs from subsequent clutches are still incubating.

If you keep reptiles or amphibians in captivity please submit the following information current as of January 1 ,1986 ..

(1) A complete inventory of all reptiles and amphibians held. Sexes should be listed 路'male(1.0) female(0 .. 1) unknown (0 .. 0 .. 1 ).n

(2) A list of species which bred and produced young during 1985, including numbers of young for each species.

(3) Miscellaneous breeding information not previously submitted.

(4) Possible longevity recordse List total number of years, months, and days the specimen has been in captivity, and whether the animal is still living.

(5) A listing of any publications relating to reproduction in reptiles and amphibians. Emphasis should be placed on "How to do it" publications, but general articles, and references relating to temperature, light cycle, hibernation, etc. are also of interest.

When submitting inventories, follow the taxonomic order listed in the 1985 edition. Type or print legibly and include your complete address and phone numbers as you would like them listed.
