This issue will finish up my serving MRS as your Newsletter Editor. When I "volunteered" back in 198i. I had no idea I would be at it this long. Volume I, Number 3 was my first attempt. Volume VII, Number 2 will be my last. At times it has been a real problem to get it out on some sort of a schedule, but most of the time I have enjoyed it. Thanks to all those who bailed me out when I was late with it. Also a special thanks to all those of you who have sent things in, articles, cartoons, and assorted stuff. This is what has made the Newsletter go.. In the beginning I had to scrounge for "fillers" to come up with a few t>ages. Now there is normally stuff I have to hold back. I hope you will give the new Newsletter Editor the same support you gave me. Keep those cards and letters coming!

PRESIDENT Ann Porwol1 Ann is a founding member of MHS. She has served as secretary and vice-president of the society. She has been involved in many activities, such as Como Zoo exhibits, Grand Old Day, and was a key organizer of the 1985 Mid-West Herpetological Symposium. Ann is interested in all types of herps, but particularly enjoys turtles and tortoi ses .

VICE-PRESIDENT John Moriarty John has been a member of MHS for over 3 years. He has served as member-at-large for 2 years.. John coordinated the State Fair exhibit, began the Occasional Papers series, and organized the herp surveys in 1984 and 1985. John is interested in the ecology and natural history of native herps and at present keeps turtles and tortoises. As vicepresident he would continue to work in strengthening the society both locally and regionally.

TREASURER Bruce Haig Bruce has been a member for MHS for almost 5 years. He has been treasurer of the society for 1 yearo Bruce has participated in exhibits at Como Zoo and Grand Old Day. He has always had herps as pets and has a special interest in small boas and lizards. As an accountant, Bruce is well qualified for the position of treasurer.

SECRETARY Melissa Hyatt Melissa has been a member of MHS for 6 months. Although she is a new member she has participated in many society activities.

NEWSLETTER EDITOR Jo Anne Moriarty Jo Anne has been a member of MHS for just over 2 years. She has worked at Grand Old Day, Como Zoo exhibits and participated in the herp surveys in 1984 and 1985. She keeps a small herd of turtles and tortoises. Jo Anne would use her experience in technical writing to continue to produce a quality newsletter.

Tom Schmitz

Tom has been a member of MHS for about 3 years. He has worked at Como Zoo exhibits, Grand Old DaY,and helped in running the White Snake Sale. Tom enjoys learning about all types of herps, but his current favorites are savannah moniters. Tom has helped with proof-reading for Frogtown Greetings. He feels his many years of business experience will be helpful if he is elected newsletter editor.

MEMBER-AT-LARGE Tad Achterberg Tad has been a member of MHS for about 3 years. He has worked at Como Zoo exhibits, helped with artwork for the society, and attended several board meetings. His herp interests are monitors, pythons and indigo snakes. Tad has a number of friends in advertising and he thinks this will be helpful to MHS. Tad is willing to help the society keep growing. fred Bosman Fred has been a member of MHS since it was formed. He has been a member-at-large for 1 year and previously served in the same pOSition.

Fred has been a member of the adoption committee, helped organize several MHS picnics and worked at the Como Zoo exhibits. He and his wife Liz coordinated the distribution of the newsletter for several years. Fred's herp interests are tortoises and lizards. He has been a steady, supporting member and he claims he has on occasional really good brainstorm.

Bruce Del1es Bruce is a founding member of MHS. He has held the offices of vice-president,president, and member-at-large. He coordinates the distibution of the newsletter and is one of 2 people who organizes feeder animals for the monthly meetings. Bruce and his wife Connie are owners of Twin Cities Reptiles.

Aaron Hampton Aaron has been a member of MHS for 3 years. He has assisted at the exhibits at Como Zoo and attends meetings regularly. His scholastic work is in biology and education. Aaron is interested in Colubrids especially kingsnakes and southern pine snakes. He wants to help in educating the general public about herps and ecology.

Geoff McRandal1 Geoff has been a member of MHS for just over 1 year. He has helped with assembling of the newsletter and several Como Zoo exhibits.' Geoff became interested in snakes while volunteering at the Minnesota Zoo and he currently has several species of snakes which he hopes to breed. He is interested in teaching the general public about snakes. Geoff is very willing to work and to contribute the time and effort needed to be a member-at-large.

John Meltzer John has been a member of MHS for a lit~e over 3 years. He has participated in the herp surveys and exhibits at Como Zoo. John has a biology degree and has kept herps most of his life. He currently has a special interest in dwarf boas and pythons. John was a volunteer at the Como Zoo and enjoys working with people.

Bullsnake (Pituophis melanoleucus sayi) Description - The Bullsnake is a large, heavy bodied snake. The adult size ranges from 50" to 72", with the record size being just over 100". The young average 16" to 17" at hatching .. This snake is marked with a series of dark dorsal blotches which vary from black to brownish in color. The tail has a banded pattern. The ground color is usually a straw yellow.. The head is also yellow with irregular markings. The ventral color is wpitish with scattered black or brown mottled rectangles. The rostral scale is enlarged, which gives the snake a pointed nose appearance. The scales are heavily keeled and the anal plate is single.

Range - This snake has been recoraed throughout southern Minnesota, mostly in the southeast. There is an old record from Polk Co. in the northwest part of the state that is no longer considered valid. Any specimen from that area would be of great interest. lbe counties of record are Anoka, Benton, Blue Earth, Carver, Chippewa, Chisago, Dakota, Fillmore, Goodhue, Hennepin, Houston, Morrison, Nicollet, Ramsey, Redwood, Renville, Scott, Sherburne, Sibley, Wabasha, Washington, Winona, and Yellow Medicine.

Habi tat - This is a snake of areas of loose sandy and gravely soils. Dry sand prairies are a favorite habitat.. Open country is favored.

Habits - Anyone who has ever encountered an angry Bullsnake will never forget its actions and loud hissing. It may also vibrate its tail when disturbed. I have yet to encounter the rattlesnake that can put on a show to match that of a Bullsnake! This snake frequents rodent burrows and may be found surming i tself near the entrance.

Food - Striped ground ~quirrels are an important food item. Meadow mice, deer mice, pocket gophers, rabbits, tree squirrels, and soMetimes frogs are also eaten. The prey is killed by constriction and may also be killed by pushing it against the side of a burrow with a loop of the boqy.

Breeding - This is an egg laying snake (oviparous) .. The eggs may number from 10 to 19 in a clutch and measure approximately 34mm x 48mm. They are laid in late June or early July and hatch in late August or early September.

Status - Special Conoern - This large, showy snake is especially vulnerable to habitat destruction and predation by humans, either through collecting or outright destruction .. Agriculture has severely reduced the range of this snake.

Commercial collecting should be discouraged or eliminated.

Herp Hints Ann Porwoll mentioned that her White's Tree Frog had laid eggs. The male had been calling (quite loudly, ask her neighbors) and she had raised the temperature and humidity (by putting an airstone in the water) in the 15 gallon ,tank she keeps them in. She had also reversed the light cycle to shut them up when the neighbors wanted to sleep. She lost many of the eggs, but has 5 tadpoles with legs now. The losses were due to failing to dechlorinate the water by mistake. The surviving tads are feeding on algae. Fran Frisch also mentioned that his White's was gravid, but the male has quit calling. Debbie Hornf'eldt had a problem with 2 long term captive Fox Snakes. They were 15 years old and one of them had gotten sick., J30th of them_' had been sexed as males, but had been engaged in breeding activity Df late. The only change in anything waS. a rise in temperature. Dan Keyler, Terry Odegaard and Jim Gerholdt all agreed that it is not real unusual for long term captives to suddenly get "busy" for no 路apparent reason. The bottom line is that all of the criteria for successful breedings are not completely understood.

******************************************************************************* Help A Hapless Herp We had a very nice 3' -4' female Common Boa up for adoption this month. There was no problem finding her a home, the problem was choosing the home for her.

The Adoption Committee always tries to be totally fair in these decisions, and uses the extablished criteria in-the selection process. If anyone ever feels we have erred, or would like an explanation, please feel free to ask one of us. BY the way, she did find a happy home!

THE MINNESOTA NONGAME WIlDLIFE CHE:CKOFF

When filling out your state income and property tax returns don't forget to give to the loon. M.onies from the checkoff go to fund various studies on nongame species, including wood turtles, five-lined skinks, cricket frogs, plus other reptiles and amphibians.

There is currently a proposal in the state legislature to remove the nongame checkoff from the short form. This would eliminate approximately half the funding for the program. Let your Representative and the Governor know that the checkoff is important. Call or write today!

, NONGAME FUND THREATENED Background Minnesota has one of the best nongame programs in the United States.

It is funded by voluntary contributions through state income and property tax forms.

Last year, $800,000 was donated by citizens through the checkoff on the tax forms.

Problem The Minnesota, Department of Revenue wants to remove the Nongame checkoff from the short in60me tax form (they will leave it on the long form).

This action will reduce the income to the nongame fund by 50%, or $400,000, per year.

The Revenue Department said the shortfall will be made up with general r~venue funds.

The problem with this approach is that the Revenue Department cannot guarantee that the funds will be appropriated by the Legislature.

The nongame program has a sure funding source now - why gamble. it away just to save 2 lines on the tax form?

The First in the Nation Seminar was held on 7 February 1987 at the Bell Museum.

HOW TO CONVERT CELSIUS TO FAHRENHEIT

I was reading an article in the Bulletin of the Chicago Herpetological Society that went " ... It has been found that ShiniIJau/LuIJ, in contrast to most other exotic reptiles, perfers an average body temperature of 20-22°C ... " Through the entire article, whenever a temperature was given, it was in Celsius. I have found this to be the case in many other technical articles and European books.

Here is a quick formula for those who want to know how to convert Celsius temperature into Fahrenheit. If you multiply the Celsius degree by 9 and then divide that answer by 5 and add to that answer 32, the result will be the Fahrenheit temperature. The formula would read: FO = [(CO x 9) -:- 5] + 32.

If we use the temperatures from the example article above, this is what it would look like: FO FO [(22 x 9) -:- 5] + 32 [(20 x 9) -:- 5] +32 FO FO [198 -:- 5] + 32 5] + 32 [180 FO
