NarES ON '!HE APRIL MEErING In Feb., 1983 Carrol Henderson spoke to M. H. S. on 'hovv our money was used on the Nongame Wildlife Checkoff.

At our Jtme, 1985 meeti.ng Carrol Henderson gave us a slide presentation on plants and animals of Costa P.ica, highlighting the nesting of the Leatherba(,J< Sea Turtle, Dennochelys coriacea. M.H.S. thanks Carrol Henderson, Nongame Supervisor for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, for speaking to us at the April meeting on his latest 15 day tour of Costa Rica.

Carrol took us through noteworthy slides of rrangrove lagoons, cloud forest_s, live volcano, and coastal beaches.

He showed us colorful slides of poisonous caterpillars, bright butterflies, stinging ants, scorpions, hurrming birds, Golden Toads (endemic) , Red Eye tree frogs , Green Vine Snake, wild birds and flowers. He explained that a tree there is a substrate for other living plants and aniroals, and that nost of the acti vi ty is in the tree tops. Of the 241 species of birds that were sighted, 40 were endemic species or subspecies of Costa Rica.

Carrol explained that wid-December to late February was a good time to visit Costa Rica, and a good t.irne for watching Leatherback nesting and hatching. January is the dry season. Another short dry season is early to mid-July. June is the active period for frog enthusiasts.

Carrol's closing remarks were that if you go to Costa Rica, be open to the things t..here around you that you dan I t understand, but. can still appreciate.

April's HERPS FROM SOUTH-GF-'lHE-BORDER brought in Boa constictors, So. American Alligator lizards, Sonoran Black Kingsnakes, Cuban Boas, Sinaloan Milk Snakes, and Argintine Horned Frog. M.H.S. wishes to thank Kate Anderson, Connie Delles, John Meltzer, Eric Thiss, Toni Vangen, and Josh, Matt, & Larry Yank for bringing their herps for the April meeti.ng .. 'tnlhen you bring a. herp for 'critter of the rronth', it helps to bring something they can be sharm in. A plastic shoe-box, sweater-box, or small aquarimn with lid works fine. Everyone likes to see the herps up close, and this way they can.

BELL MUSEUM EXHIBIT M.H. S. provided animals and persons to the Bell Museum for a week long snake exhibi t. Animals were provided by Kat.e Anderson, Bruce Delles, Dodge Nature Center, and John Moriarty. On Saturday, March 19, M.R.S. members providoo a handson display and answered questions. The members present were Kate Anderson, John Jesmer, John Moriarty, and Toni Vangen. There were a number of school groups that saw the exhibit during the week with over 250 visitors on the 19th. Thanks for all of your support and help.

TROPICAL FOREsr LAND PURCHASES The ability to purchase tropical forests at bargain prices (approx. $20 per acre), has encouraged many groups to buy tropical areas These purchases are set aside as wildlife preserves to protect tropical animals including many reptiles and arrphibians. One of the major organizat.ions involved in this program is The Nature Conservancy.

The Latin American Director is the fonner director of the Minnesota Chapter. e

lYloH.S. has decided. to contribute to the cause of saving this land and its animals, purchasing one acre ($20.00). Any member who wishes to help in this cause and would like to donate, can bring a contribut.ion to the rronthly meeting, or mail it to M.H.S. DOCUMENTATION OF AMPHIBIAN AND REPrILE RECORDS In an effort. to increase our knowledge on the distribution of anpllibians and reptiles in r-tunnesota, t.he Nongame Wildlife Program is requesting records for species of int.erest (see following list). In order to maint.ain quality rec..'Ords and build a corrplete distribution data file, cert.ain criteria have been set for record documentation. These criteria are designed to be quickly and easily met..

The criteria are: 1.

NAME OF SPECIES: This should be determined from one of the listed references, or left as unknown.

2. LOCATION: The rrore precise the better.

General descript.ions are not acceptable (i. e. 5 miles S of Stillwater).

The correct location should be descriptive and have the legal description (i.e. MN, v-Tashington Co., W. Lakeland, Jct. of Co. Rd. 21 and 19th St. N (T29N R20W Sec 27 1/4NE l/4N-vÂť. A sma.ll map, ei ther xeroxed or handdrawn, would be helpful.

4. SPECIMEN VERIFICATION ...

A) Voucher: This could be a rca.elkil1 or a live animal. The collecti on of live Blanding I s and wood turtles and 5-linec1 skinks is illegal without a permit.!

Specimens can be preserved in fonnalin, frozen or kept. alive until they are turned over to the proper person. Additional info on collecting and specimen preparation can be found in Field Herpet.ology (Karns 1986) or by contacting John Boriarty.

Caution should be taken when trying to collect. any live animal.

B) Photograph: / Clear phot.ographs of a specimen are acceptable. The photos should be full frame of the animal.

If possible three views should be taken.

They C'lxe the dorsal, ventral, and a closeup of the head. Photos may be of handheld specimens, nat.ural background is not required. DO Nor att.enpt to take ventral or head photos of rattlesnakes.

Photos should be slides, preferrably Yroac"hromes . Slides should have the name of photographer, date of photo, and location printed on the border.

C) Tape Recordings: Recordings of frog and toad calls can be identified to species. Calls of an isolated species is preferred to that of a mixed chorus of frogs.

D) Wri tten Descriptions: These are discouraged. There are a m.miber of species that are easily confused and \\7Ould not be accept.eel on sight.ings records alone. If a writt.en description is all you can provide, then please be as detailed as possible.

5. ~1AME & ADDRESS: The collector should provide their name, affiliation (if any), address, and phone ntmiber. This will allow for follow-up information.

TO THE M.H. S. MEMBERSHIP On behalf of the Minnesota Zoo volunteers, thank you for allowing Zoo Lab t-e adopt one of the recently acquired boas. With Zoo Lab's expanded hours starting in rrd.dMay, it has become necessary to expand our nUlllJ:er of animals to minimize the stress of so much ha.ndling. This boa will be seen and touched by thousands of visitors, and will help in M.Z.G. 's and MeR.S. 's goal of education. The only problem that remains is alleviati.ng the stress on the volunteers. ARGH!

Kate Anderson GREEN SNAKE FIELD TRIP

The Missouri Department of Conservat.ion has approached M.R.S. to provide them with some green snakes for a reintroduction program in Missouri. M.ReS. will be going on a collecting trip on May 22, Sunday, to Suconnix WMA in Wright County. The v~1A. is located along Hwy 24, north of Annadale and west of Sugar Lake. Anyone interested, should attend the May meeting or contact John Moriarty at 626-2030.
