WILD ANIMAL BILL BACK IN SI'ATE SENATE 1

A bill requl.rlng an annual $50 penni t to keep dangerous wild animals has recently been introduced in the Minnesota Senate. This bill would include all Crocodilians, all venorrous reptiles, and large boas and pythons.

The Bill in Senate File 86 and was introduced by Senator Greg Dahl (296-5003) of District 50, 'Which includes Coon Rapids, Blaine, Ramsey, Ham Lake and Oak Grove. This is the same bill that was introduced in 1987 and 1988.

The MHS Board of Directors is proposing an amendment to the MHS By-Laws that adds the following Article.

ARTICLE XI - Student Chapters Section 1101.

A student chapter may be formed by the full time students of a University or College.

Section 1102.

The officers of the student chapter shall consist of a President, VicePresident and Treasurer.

Section 1103.

The duties of the student chapter officers shall be: President Reserve the monthly meeting room for the society.

Ensure that the student chapter maintains the minimum membership needed to remain an active student organization per university requirements.

Vice-President - Maintain a list of active chapter members.

Treasurer - Collect monies as required for the operation of the student chapter.

Pay university fees required for chapter registration and meeting room charges.

Section 1104.

The student chapter shall adhere to all regulations of the MHS Constitution and By-Laws.

The MHS Board of Directors recommends adoption of this amendment.

The formation of a student chapter will allow MHS to obtain University meeting rooms at student rates.

Fifi, a freeze dried and stuffed P짜thon, and its present owner stole the attention from the rest of the herps. The M.R.S. menibers who brought herps were: Bruce & Chase Delles, Bob Duerr, Dan Keyler, Greg Kvanbek and John Meltzer.

BREEDING NarES ON LEOPARD GECKOES

by John C. Melt.zer Leopard Geckoes make excellent pets and appear to propagate: relatively easy in captivi ty .

This is my second year to have these intE~resting and hardy lizards breed and lay eggs. Following are the met.hods I used: my leopard gecko colony consists of one rna.le and four ferrales. They are housed together year around in a large, plastic storage rox. I use newspaper as a substrate.

Cage accessories include a water oishi dish of bonemeal, and a plastic box filled with damp rross.

One end of the cage rests on a heating pad where t.he temperat.ure is maintained at 85 degrees.

The geckoes are cooled down at night. I feed them crickets and pinkies two or three t.irnes a week. Occasionally they get waxworms or mealwonns mixed with their calcium supplement.

By mid-March I noticed much breeding acti vi ty . The male would stalk the ferrales with much t.ail t.wi t.ching and then copulat.ion was observed.

Beginning in April, the ferrales started laying eggs.

They laid two at a time, approximately once a week. ThE' eggs were incubated in plastic shoe boxes at_ 80 to 85 degrees. Hatching began in fifty days. Each female laid between six ana ten eggs and o. few are still laying.

SOME FEMALE GECKOS Nor AT ALL FEMININE

The following article appeared in the June 13, 1988, issue of Insight On The News.

The heat of the egg from which they are hatched definitely goes to the heads of some female Leopard Geckos, so much so that they often go through life behaving much like a male. These ferrales are unresponsive when courted by males and never lay eggs. vVhile sex det.enninat.ion due to egg terrperature has been established in other animals such as alligat.ors, this influence on adult gecko behavior was surprlslng to David Crews and William Gutzke, Who made the discovery while doing research at the University of Texas at Austin.

All gecko eggs incubated at a t-ernperature of 79 degrees ha.tched as fema.les and rrost of those incubated at 90 degrees hatched as males. But the few females that did hat,ch at higher t.enpE'ratures exhibit.eO. masculine behavior even though they were not sterile, leading the researchers t.o speculate that egg terrperature affects t.he hormonal balance of the lizards. That. in turn affects gonadal sex of the lizards.

Aggression is elevated in malE' and ferrale lizards hat_ched in warmer terrperatures. ltJhile this does not affect the male's ability to recognize the ferrales and court them, the aggressive behavior of a "masculine II female toward a ma.le forces the male to retreat, decreasing the ferrale's opportunity to reproduce.

We are now in the post new year doldrums and eagerly awaiting the first harbingers of spring. That means that NCW is the time t.o sit down and write that_ article you have been pla.nning t.o do for the M.B.S. Occasional Papers.

You have no excuses left. not to do that paper!

We are actively searching for papers for inclusion in the next issue.

Past issues of the Occasional Papers should be used for guida.nce in the format and style to be used. The nanuscript should be submitted on 8.5 x 11 white paper.

Text should be double spaced with 1 inch margins on all sides. Figures and tables should eacn. be on a separate page.

For those of you who use word processors, we have the capability of reading both 5.25 and 3.5 inch floppy disks, in double and high density format s. Alligator on the menu? That I s the prediction of executive chef Keith Keogh of the Epcot Center at. Walt Disney World. Keogh was part of the Disney team at the lKA HCGA 188, the culinary Olyrrpics, in Frankfurt, ltJ. Germany, this fall. "Alligat.or was a hit of the show," he said.

The meat was used in 20 di fferent dishes at the conpeti tion, including t.wo of the 13 gold medal winners of the Disney cooking team. The two Disney winners were poached alligator and grouna gator tail shaped into a loaf. Keogh says the future is bright for cooking with alligator.
