DECEMBER PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Speaker Bill Love came all the way from Florida to present "Helping Your Herps Photogenically".

This was an excellent presentation on the basics of photography and how to avoid the conunon mistakes made when taking photographs. Bill has been interested in photography for ten years or so. From it he has gained a lot of enjoyment and some profit There are many purposes for taking photographs. These include: keeping a record for identification of animals; documentation of changes in an animal such as color change with aging; show activity such as breeding, hatching, experiences in the field, and people with their animals.

Bill feels that a lot of fancy equipment is not as important as good technique. A simple 35mm camera and a macro lens are all anyone needs. Bill takes mainly slides because they are good for programs and most book publishers will accept only color slides for publication. He said that there are two major areas that make up photographic technique -lighting and composition. He discussed a number of problems in these two areas and measures that can be taken to correct them as wen as to enhance pictures. Bill then went into detail about special problems when working with animals.

He had many pointers on how to deal with them. As with all photographers expertise comes after shooting many, many rolls of ftIm. There is no replacement for practice. A few books recommended are Understanding Photography and The SLR Photographers Handbookboth by Carl Shipman.

CRITTER OF THE MONTH The critter of the month for the December meeting was your most photogenic or colorful animal and there were certainly quite a lot of them. The following people are expected to enter the Photography Contest next year: James Rea, Cliff Lindberg, John Meltzer, Greg Kvanbeck, Joe Matzke, David Miller, Kate Anderson, Bill Ness, Brenda Bell, Peter Yanz, Deborah Carlson, Dennis Daly, and Aaron Hampton. The critters we can expect to see photos of include: Homed Frog, Bolivian Boa Constrictor, Gila Monster (3), Corn Snake, Ball Python, Rough Green' Snake, Northern Plains Skink, Goliath Frog, Pueblan Milksnake, Scarlet Kingsnake, Collared Lizard, Plated Lizard, Leopard Gecko, Anerythris1ic Corn Snake, Red Milksnake, San Luis Potosi Kingsnake, Arizona Mountain, Kingsnake and African Bullfrog (Pixie).

MONTHLY RAFFLE

The raffle brought in $57.00. The winners were Mike Schwartz, Blair Sander, Aaron Riedel, Cliff Lindberg, Gloria Anton, Kris Anton, Ann Marie Ravnitsky, Carol Dotff,Dan Bramucci., Jamie King, Gary Pederson, Gabe Gerholdt, David Wiener, Kim Breezel, Gwinda Jorgensen, Marla Wilber, John Gidmark, and Ben Oerholdt. The loot included a large styrofoam cooler, a package of MHS notecards, an aquarium hood, turtle prints, a children's book on frogs, several hide tubes, a turtle ashtray, a number of vita-lites, a screen aquarium lid" a plastic shoebox, and frog stickers.

REFRESHMENTS Refreshments at the December meeting were provided by the Antons in celebration of Kris' birthday and by Ruth Meltzer. We were lucky enough to have a nice selection of cupcakes and bars. Anyone willing to help with refreshments at future meetings should call Brenda Bell at (612) 488-8519 or talk to her at the meeting.

HELP A HAPLESS HERP Adoptions at the December meeting were the fonowing: an intergrade python to Cliff Lindberg; a pair of Three-toed Box Turtles to Marla WIlber; an Eastern Box Turtle to Shawn Mmtaugh; and an

Eastern Box Turtle to Ann Marie Ravnitsky.

At the time of publication there were no adoption animals for the Janruuy meeting. Anyone with animals to go up for adoption should contact Fred Bosman prior to the meeting.

A SUCCESSFUL HOLIDAY BANQUET This year's gathering was held at the Terrace Cafe in the University of Minnesota's St Paul

Student Center. About 59 people brought good food and their good company. On the menu was a pot luck dinner. After enjoying a delectable array of foods the group settled back and enjoyed Bill Love's travelogue on interesting herp people across the U.S. By the way Bill arrived in shorts as he promised but he managed to come up with a pair of long pants to bring along. Bill said that he enjoyed Minnesota and he hopes to come back some 1ime. To show our appreciation and save him some trouble we sent some our fine weather along to him. If you're reading this Bill, we hope you enjoyed the sub-fteewg weather and the white Christmas in Florida.

Special thanks go to Marilyn Brooks for all of her hard work on the holiday banquet. Marilyn was the chairperson and was assisted by Brenda Bell, Greg Kvanbeck, Joe Matzke, and Craig Aberls.

FIRST ATTEMPTS AT BREEDING LEOPARD GECKOS

By Bill Ness For 15 or so years keeping snakes has been a way of life for me with other herps always taking the back seat as far as my interests and attention go. Recently, my interest in other herps has fmaRy matured and I have come to realize that there are many interesting herps that do have legs. My conection now includes tortoises, amphibians, and lizards.

As my interest in lizards progressed to the point of actually obtaining one or so, I naturally zeroed in on a species that was easy to maintain and also easy to breed while not costing an arm and a leg.

Some reading, several conversations with fellow herp keepers, and some advice from Twin Cities Reptiles led to my acquisition of deveral young Leopard Geckos. I had a little difficulty at fIrst

until I realized that those little buggers like and need to eat a lot of food.

By the fall of 1987 I ended up with a pair that had hatched in the spring of 1986. They were housed in a 15 gallon aquarium with crushed granite as a substrate, a "hot rock" at one end, and a shallow water dish at the other. The room where the cage was kept stays around 70 degrees in the winter and about 80-85 degrees in the summer. The photoperiod was quite erratic as I was often working in the room late at night Crickets, waxworms, and pinkies occasionally dusted with vitamins made up their diet. By February, the female had visible through the lower abdomen two white areas that I hoped were eggs. On March 15, 1988 the female was obviously thinner and the gravel piled up in one comer. I carefully brushed the gravel away little by little until I discovered two oblong white eggs. The eggs were placed in very damp vermiculite in a plastic container and placed the container on top of a set of fluorescent plant lights to keep them warm. After several weeks the eggs started to dent in and soon became moldy. I checked the temperature and it was over 90 degrees. The eggs may have been infertile or I may have cooked them. In either case they obviously did not hatch and my first attempt with lizard breeding appeared to have ended in failure.

The female did not lay any more eggs that year. Subsequent conversations with people who had successfully.bred Leopard Geckos and other herps on a regular basis suggested that some females lay infertile eggs their first time around.

Since I could not produce my own babies that year I had to be satisfied with purchasing one from a successful breeder. The summer was spent raising him and fattening up my adult pair. The male was a little more aggressive than the female at feeding time and frequently stole her food, so I separated them for a few weeks to give her a chance to fatten up. They were placed back together in the fall in a five gallon aquarium with gravel substrate, hot rock, water dish, and the addition of a cottage cheese container fun of damp sphagnum moss with an access hole in the side.

By February the female was very heavy. She seemed so much fatter than I remembered from the year before that I thought she was going to lay about four eggs instead of two. On March 16, 1989 the female was obviously thinner and the gravel in the aquarium was strewn all over. The two eggs were discovered in the plastic container. The moss contained a large amount of gravel that had been thrown into the container. The eggs were removed from the egg..laying container and placed in a cottage cheese container half filled wi1h damp sphagnum moss. The moss was kept slightly moist but not wet. The moss was placed on a shelf near a goose-neck lamp. When the room temperature was above 80 degrees the lamp was turned off. The temperature fluctuated from about 73 on some cool nights to about 89 on the hottest days. The average temperature was between 80 and 85. For the next several weeks I fed the female about two mouse pinkies and a bunch of crickets every week. She gained back her weight and four weeks after the first two eggs were laid she laid two more eggs. Again, she was obviously thinner and the cage substrate was totally rearranged. These eggs were placed in' a similar container to the one the frrst clutch was incubating in and placed on the shelf next to the flfSt clutch. Again, I fed the female as much as she wanted for the next few weeks and approximately four weeks later, the frrst clutch hatched.

Within days the female laid two more eggs. These were placed in the same container as the second clutch. The baby geckos were maintained in their hatching container for a while. Four weeks later the second clutch hatched, followed by the third clutch after an additional four weeks.All hatchlings fed on small crickets and waxworms within a short time. They grow quite rapidly if provided with plenty of food of the appropriate size and really seem to grow fast when they start eating mouse pinkies. The youngster I purchased last year is ahnost adult size and the babies from the first clutch are ahnost twice as big as those from the last clutch.

To swmnarize, the adults were maintained together year round wi1h just a brief separation to fatten up the female. The temperature in the summer varied from about 75 to almost 90 and the temperature in the winter varied from about 70 to 80. A hot rock was plugged in all winter and unplugged during the summer..The photoperiod was erratic, up to 16 hours some winter days.

Two eggs were laid March 15 in 1988 and both went bad after two weeks, possibly from too high incubation temperature. A clutch of two eggs was laid March 16 in 1989 and two subsequent clutches of two eggs each were laid at four week intervals. Hatching took approximately two months and all six eggs hatched.

Leopard Geckos are very interesting and rewarding lizards to work with. Their daily activities are interesting and almost comical at times. When they stalk a cricket with tail twitching cat-like in the air you can see that their names does not just apply to their color. Ease of care and the relative ease in breeding makes the Leopard Gecko an ideal first time lizard.

HERP HINTS Edited by Greg Kvanbeek $ Aaron Hampton, who keeps a lot of Colubrid snakes, has some good advice for you if you have an emaciated snake that has just begun eating again. Don't overfeed it right away, as it will probably not hold the food down. A snake that has been off feed for a long time will have a weakened digestive system and simply cannot hold down a big meal.Try a couple of pinkie mice, wait a few days, and try again. Gradually increase the amount of food until it is eating nonnally. $

When setting up a terrarium for lizards, keep in mind that males of many species are very

tenitorial and will ftght if they are overcrowded. If you do have more 1han one male, make sure

the terrarium is large and has plen1;y of biding places. Joe Matzke has noticed these problems among many of his lizards, including iguanids, skinks, lacertids, and others.

• Ann POlWOn, world-renowned turtle expert, advises caution when feeding spiny ftsh such as goldfish to your turtles. (Be careful when buying minnows from bait shops, since an occasional stickleback is found in with the minnows.) For turtles that swallow their food whole, such as Mata-matas and Alligator Snapping turtles, Ann clips the spiny upper fms off of the fish. This reduces the danger that the turtles will impale themselves on the spines.This does not seem to be a problem for turtles that tear their food to shreds before eating, such as Painted turtles. Ann does not mention what she does about bullhead spines. I assume that no one in their rightmind would waste a perfectly good bullliead by feeding it to a turtle. In Iowa, bullheads are considered a delicacy, aren't they? $ Congratulations to John Meltzer, whose Gila Monsters bred and produced three healthy young this year. They sure are cute. If you successfuny breed egg-laying reptiles, John has some advise for you. First, when an egg hatches, don't assume the others are soon due. The Gila eggs hatched several days apart Be patient Second, if you do tear open an egg, be extremely careful of the egg yolk. Do not damage it Keep the animal moist and allow it to absorb the rest of the yolk sac.

• Now that its so cold out, it is important to keep an eye on the temperature in your cages and terrariums. Just because it's 80 degrees in your herp room doesn't mean it's that warm in your cages, especially if the cage is against an outside wall.

• Another note about the cold weather. Take care when transporting animals. There are various ways of keeping animals comfortable. If you use a styrofoam cooler insert a thermometer so the temperature inside can be monitored. Don't poke pencil holes (with the exception of a single pencil hole) to allow air inside. The animal can usually get enough air for a short time. If animals will be packed for long periods - 12 hours or more - open the cooler periodically_ For short trips put the bagged animal inside your jacket, use a hot water bottle or the heat packs activated by squeezing.

• The Japanese Giant Salamander, Andrius japonicus, requires a huge aquarium and cool, clean water. If you successfully breed them, the male guards the 500 or so eggs until they hatch. If this advise is useful to you call me and invite me over. I've never seen a Japanese Giant Salamander.

At the same time members are invited to bring in their favorite home herp videos. These should be relatively short - under 10 minutes - and preferably entertaining. 1989 ILLUSTRATION CONTEST WINNER Sarina Brewer made off with flrSt prize again this year. Her illustration of a Spiny Softshell Turtle was the only entry. Sarina is currently a struggling art student and the $100.00 prize will no doubt come in handy. (No trips to Twin Cities Reptiles, Sarma!)

EXOTIC ANIMAL ORDINANCES WANTED The MHS Regulations Committee is responsible for staying aware of legislation that would affect the keeping and husbandry of herps. It is to draft guidelines regarding the keeping of herps. The guidelines should cover public safety, animal protection, and responsibility of owners. The guidelines will be available to state, local, and other governing bodies that are draf1ing laws concerning herps. A listing of counties and cities that currently have laws pertaining to herps is to be conected. A file of the laws is to be made available to MHS members.

The Regulations Committee requests that members contact their city hall to obtain copies of local ordinances regarding exotic animals in your city. The Minneapolis ordinances have already been obtained.
