MEMBER ACTIVITIES

MHS is an organization that WOt"ks through member participation. We conduct displays at Como Zoo) the state fair, Minnesota Zoo, and other locations. These displays are a chance for MHS members to share their knowledge of herps and for the public to learn about MHS. Without volunteers we could not participate in these d1splays. Tr,ere are no requirements except interest and enthusiasm.

Please be a commlttee volunteer. Some committee jobs are ongoing. Others require help only occasionally or for one time. Vv1len help is needed it will be announced in the "Committee Reports" section of the newsletter. Monthly meetings are also a great place to participate. There are several committees that require help monthly such as newsletter assembly, refreshments, and displays. Sign-up sheets are avallable at the monthly meetings.

Herp Hints and Cr1tter' of the Month provide a chance to exchange information. Many questions are asked regularly because they are basic information. New members, don't be afraid to ask a question. All quest10ns are 1mportant. There 1s no such thing as a dumb question.

AUGUST PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

At the August meeting Jim Gerho ldt presented a travelogue on his trip to Aruba Island.

Interspersed was a report on the Aruba Island Rattlesnake Project. In March he spent two weeks In Aruba assisting w1th the rattlesnake research, observing the flora and fuana, and having one heck of a time whlle most of us suffered through blizzardy Minnesota weather.

Aruba is a small island, just 20 miles long and 7 miles wide, located in the Dutch Carrlbean off the tip of Venezuela. The island has 16 species of herps (12 lizards, 2 snakes, and a few amphibians, including one introduced speCies, the Mar1ne Toad). He also described and showed slides of the w1de variety of birds and plants he saw on the island. Especially impressive were impressive were the many cactus.

Jim's m~in purpose for visiting was to stUdy the Aruba Island Rattlesnake (Crotalus unfe%r).

To date over $2,000.00 in donation for support of the research program haave come from various sources in Minnesota.

On October 12, 1988 the first part of the program was started. This is a one year study to learn the actual status of C unfe%r in the wlld, and to obtain animals to use 1n a capt1ve breeding program. This includes both mark and recapture work and radiotelemetry tracking.

Matt Goode, a biologist from Wyoming, heads the field work. Matt had sim111ar exper1ence with the Prair1e Rattlesnake. Matt is assisted by Candido Ras, an Aruba native who has long had an Interest 1n the species. Jim had several good stories of his adventures with these two fellows.

He helped track the snakes, visited the holding fac; llty for the captive snakes, and played tourist. The audience enjoyed h1s presentat10n very mUCh.

NOW fOR A WORD FROM ........ YOUR EDITOR

Last month's newsletter brought MHS into the age of computers. I think the typewriter has been retired. After fighting w1th the word processing software, I managed to get the newsletter done on my new Macl ntosh computer (thanks to the assistance of your pat 1ent PreSident). Bear with me while I get to know the new computer and experiment with layout. Being a born and rajsed IBM user I hate mice. After that good news here's where I get up on my soapbox.

Item #4: Classified ads will be run for a maximum of 3 months. At the end of a 3-month period it is up to the advertiser to re-submit an ad. If an ad has been running for a long time I reserve the right to hold it back 1n order to allow space for a new ad. Ad space is limited and other members must be given a chance to advertise too. I w111 try to f1t in as many ads as possible.

Item #5: If you want your business card to be run for 3 months, be sure to send 3 cards.

AUGUST BOARD MEETING

The August board meeting was held on August 5 at the home of Gloria Anton, The meeting was called to order at 7:30. In attendance were Kate Anderson, Gloria Anton, Fred Bosman, Liz Bosman, Scott Cords, Bruce Delles, Bruce Haig, Nancy Halg, Aaron Hampton, John Moriarty, Ann Porwoll, and Jo Anne Wetherell-l"'loriarty, The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved, Attendance at the general meeting was 86. The Treasurer's report was amended and approved. Membership has slipped a little. It was suggested that letters be sent to those that have dropped to try to get them to renew.

President's Report: Plans for the location of the 1990 Symposium are stalled until the Bell Museum makes a decision on a special exhibit. This should be done soon. A program committee consist ing of John, Kate, Scott. Kathy Castle (MZG), and hopefully a representative from the Bell Museum, will meet in the near future to discuss possible speakers. The new DNR pamphlet "Snakes and Lizards of Minnesota" will be distributed at the September meeting. one per membership. It was decided that members not attending the meeting but desiring abrochure wl1l be asked to send $1.00 to cover postage and handllng. Members-at-Large were ass1gned duties for the monthly meeting which include getting out and putting away the foot lockers and library, putt1ng up signs outs1de the room, and quieting noisy members during the meeting. As neither John nor Kate wHl be at the September general meeting due to responsib1l1tles related to the Trumpeter Swan conference, Aaron will preside over the meet1ng and Becky Helgeson will act as secretary. Old Business: Scott has completed the exhibit cages for the State Fair. His wife, Cheryl, painted them. Installation in the ONR building will be on August 9. It was decided that snacks and sodas will be provided for those members working Display Committee events. Our Student Chapter will soon need a new president as Mari1yn Brooks has graduated. We all need to thank her and Tom Schmitz for the work done to make this happen. There has still been only one response from a Humane Society (Hennepin County). Connie Oelles and Brenda Bell volunteered to assist Liz with the picnic on August 20. The Holiday Banquet needs a chairperson or it will not happen. The Illustration Contest will be chafred by Sally Brewer. MHS pins have been ordered (1000 of them) for give-aways at dlsplays. The proposal to order coffee mugs for member service rewards was delayed due to unanswered questions.

New Business: The purchase of several new books for the library was approved. These include Lizards of the World, Keeping and Breeding Snakes, Snakes of the Eastern U.S., Turtles of the World, and The Salamanders of Oh10.

Roundtable: S1nce only one person s1gned up for each day at Como Zoo, a decis10n was made to cancel the August dlsplay. If this program is to work more participation is needed. Any ideas?

Regarding the demise of Paesano's, Nancy Ha1g will check out other places to see if they can accomodate us.

There was so much discuss10n about some of the 1ssues that one member fell asleep. The meeting was adjourned at 10:50.

HOLIDAY BANQUET COMMITTEE - A chairman is needed to plan this event scheduled for Dec. 2.

SOCIETY HISTORIAN - Someone is still needed to organ1ze the society's scrapbook and gather information on past and present MHS activities. Contact John Moriarty.

ADOPTION COM"lITTEE - Several alternates are needed. Contact Fred Bosman.

REGULATIONS COMMITTEE - Thls committee is responsible for staying aware of legislation that would affect the keeping and husbandry of herps. It 1s to draft guidelines regarding thekeeplng of herps. The gu1delin~s should cover pubHc safety, animal prDtectlon, and responsibl1ity of owners. The guide lines wi 11 be available to state, local, and other governing bodies that are drafting laws concerning herps. A l1sting of counties and cities that currently have laws pertain1ng to herps is to be col1ected. A fl1e of the laws 1s to be made available to MHS members.

The Regulations Committee requests that members contact the1r city ha1l to. obtain coples of local ordinances regarding exot1c an1mals in your city. The Minneapol1s ordinances have already been obta1ned. Send coples of ordinances to: Dean Bowman .

CRITTER OF THE MONTH

Featured critter at the August meetlng was "Island Herps". Representing th1s group were: CatEye Snake, Cuban Treefrog, White's Treefrog, Blue-tongued Sk1nk (2), Dumerll's Boa, JUngle Carpet Python, African Aorora Snake, Savannah Monitor, and Solomon Island Ground Boa. These animals were brought by Jim Gerholdt, Greg Kvanbeck, Aaron Hampton, Thomas Smith, C11ff Lindberg, Jim Dorfler,Glor1a Anton, Chase Delles, and John Meltzer.

HELP A HAPLESS HERP

A few animals were lucky enough to f1nd new homes last month. Shawn Murtaugh took home a female Three-toed Box Turtle, Aaron Hampton adopted the 5-year-old male Green Iguana, and the two D1amondback Terrap1ns were finally taken 1n by Jeff Hering. At t1me of publication there were no adoption animals for the September meet1ng.

MONTHL Y RAffLE

The items donated for the raffle were Aruba Island T-shirt, MHS T-Sh1rt, turtle curio, turtle whistle, turtle ashtray, turtle candle holder, and undergravel filter. These prizes were won by Jo Ann James, John Walsh, Brandon Delles, Bill Ness, McClane, Bruce Cutler, and Marla Wilber. The raffle brought in $34.00. Thanks to all for your donations.

REFRESHMENTS

Marilyn Brooks and Greg Kvanbeck provided us with a great summer treat - refreshing fresh frutt cups - at the August meeting. Thanks to both of you.

ANNUAL MHS PICNIC A BIG SUCCESS

Th1s year's picnic was held on Sunday, August 20, 1989 from 11 :00 AM to 5:路00 PM at Plymouth L10ns .Park. A few members were bribed by Liz Bosman to arrive early and hold our spot. We heard Liz has the best champagne breakfasts!

About thirty people attended the picnic. Several grills were set. up and people brought their own del1cac1es to cook. Fred Bosman, as usual, p1cked out some really terr1fac sweet corn and the roasted com on the cob was enjoyed by all. Then 1t was off to the races - turt1e races that is. The compet1on was stiff atd though formal betting was not allowed we did not notice the Delles kids and the Strand kids off by the jungle gym betting their lunch money. Look out Bruce - next Chase will be betting the shop! L1z Bosmanmade some really cute glass turtles to give as prizes.

MHS STUDENT CHAPTER

A student chapter of MHS has been formed at the University of Minnesota. The student chapter wl1l act as a ]jason with other University organizations. They will also assist in room schedul1ng. Marilyn Brooks and Tom Schmitz worked out all of the detalls required by the University. They both deserve a very big thanks.

Officers of the student chapter are: President - Marl1yn Brooks, Pres1dent-El ect - Greg Kvanbeck, V1ce-Pres1dent - Peter Radford, Treasurer - Joe Palmer.

Any MHS members who are also students at the Univers1ty should contact a student chapter off1 cer or an MHS board member.

HANDS-ON AT COMO ZOO

The July Como Zoo display was well liked by the public. MHS members who generously volunteered their weekend time were Liza Van Dyke, Cliff Lindberg, John and Ruth Meltzer, Aaron Hampton, Gayle Lenz, Chris Hall, Dean Bowman, Bruce and Nancy Hafg, and Vence and Nanette Jemmerson.

There will be a d1sp lay on September 9 and 10 if there are enough people 1nterested. The hours w1ll be decreased to 12-3.

WANTED: BREEDING SUCCESS STORIES

Many MHS members are successfully breeding and gett1ng offspring from their animals. Other members can benefit from your exper1ence. Now 1s the time to jot down a few notes about your breedlng program; things l1ke whether the male and female are kept together or seperate prior to breeding season, what temperature are they kept at, how are they fed, when do you put the male and female together, 1f eggs are laid how are they incubated, how long are eggs incubated, etc., etc. At the end of the breeding season, send this information to be printed in the newsletter.

Remember, others can learn from your mistakes as well as your successes. Don't worry about your style of writing or typing. The editor will help in these areas.

SNAKE AND LIZARD BOOKLET AVAILABLE

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources recently produced a n1ce booklet, "Snakes and Lizards of M1nnesota". It features color photos by several MHS members as well as good general information about Minnesota's snakes and 1izards. John Moriarty obta1ned copies for MHS members. These w1ll be available, one per membership, to members present at the September meeting. Any member who is not able to attend the meeting 'can obtain a coPy by sending a $1.00 to cover postage and enevelope. Mall requests to MHS's Bell Museum address. These booklets are being sold at the state fair for $2.00, so we thank the DNR for their generosity.

THE CONTEST RULES ARE AS FOLLOWS: 1. Drawing size no larger than 14" by 17".

2. Drawings to be done ln black lnk on white paper. Line drawings only, no washes or pencll shading.

3. Draw1ngs must be .of Minneosta herps. Excluding - Wood Turtle, Timber Rattlesnake, Fivelined Sk1nk, and Grey Treefrog (our previous winners).

4. Drawings should focus on adult herp with some Minnesota flora in background.

5. All entries must be received by November 3, 1989. Entries can be mailed or turned in at the November meeting.

6. Mail all entries to: MHS Illustration Contest C/O Sally Brewer 1990 Iglehart St. Paut MN 55104 7.. If you wish entries (or entry) returned, it MUST b~ accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope. They may also be plcked up after the contest has been judged.

8. All entries must have contestant's name, address, phone number attached to the back of the drawlng. Each drawing must have a protectlve cover (paper flap, clear plastiC wrap, or plastic). No glass unless turned in at the monthly meeting. DO NOT MAIL GLASS. Entries do not need to be framed.

9. Contest is open to M.H.S. members only -.. locally or out of state, including past winners.

All entries will be Judged on originality) accuracy, compostlon, and clarity. It must be a good, clean drawing that can be easily reproduced. The winning drawing and all rights to 1t become the property of M.H.S.. We will take all possible precautions to ensure the safety of all entries, but M.H.S. will assume no responsibility for lost or damaged drawings.

1989 MHS PHOTO CONTEST

There are two months left before the deadl1ne for this year's photo contest. Everyone has time to get those last p1ctures taken and select their entries. Th1s year the contest will be for prints only. The chairperson for the contest is Jim Adams. Ribbons will be awarded for the top entries and there will be prizes for first place and the winner of the People's Choice award.

Contest Rules: 1. Entries may be made by MHS members only. Entries from previous contests are not eligible.

2. Entries are for pr1nts only. Categories include: a) Herps wtth people b) Herps hi a natural setting. All entries are elig1blefoi' the People's Choice award. This category is voted on by the members at the December meeting.

3. A contestant may enter up to 5 prints.

4. All entries must be postmarked by Nov. 3 or turned in at the November meeting.

5. Entries to be returned by mail must be accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

Entries may be picked up at the December meeting.

6. Size of prints may be 4" x 6", 5" x 7", or 8" x 10'. They must be mounted on cardboard or matboard at least 8" x 10") but no larger than 11" x 14". Framed prints are discouraged.

7. The entrants name, address, and entry category must be on the back of every print. Do not place names on the front of the pr1nt.

17 Fertlles eggs were la1d on 1 March. 15 hatched from 30 Aprll to 8 May. 20" at hatching.

1.1 Brazil1an Rainbow Boas c.h. 84. 5.5' and 6'.

First time breeding. Copulat ion observed November through December. 19 young born on 4 June. No st1llborn or unfert111zed ova 18" at b1rth.

2.2 Eastern Ind1go Snakes c.h. 87. 5' to 6' F1rst t1me breeding. Courtship observed 1n December between one of the pairs. 5 fertile and 6 1nfertile eggs were laid on 28 Apri 1. 1 hatched 17 July. 18" at birth.

Bruce De 1Jes Burmese Python. Heterozygous female and albino male.

29 eggs 1aid on 16 May. 24 hatched between 17 and 22 July. 12 albino and 12 normal color (heterozygous) Female incubated the eggs.

Western Fox Snakes 3 females.

Laid 59 eggs between 27 and 29 June. 54 hatched.

California Kingsnake Laid 8 eggs on 17 May. 6 hatched between 1 and 3 August.

Common Boa Constr1 ctor Gave birth to 16 l1ve young on 23 June. There were 3 stillborn and 2 masses.

Desert Kingsnake. 2 females.

Fema le 1. Mated on 25 and 26 March. Laid 8 eggs on 1 May, which hatched on 16 June.

She mated again on 9 May and laid 7 eggs on 15 June. They hatched on 9 August.

Female 2. Mated on 26 and 27 March. Laid 7 eggs on 2 May which hatched on 18 and 19 June.

Mex1can Black Kfngsnake 1 female.

Mated 5 times between 11 and 29 March. 9 eggs were la1d on 23 April. 5 eggs hatched between 13 and' 16 June. Mated again on 9 May and la1d 7 eggs on 15 June. All eggs hatched on 9 August.

All snakes were hibernated for 2.5 to 3 months at 55 to 60 degrees F. Eggs were 1ncubated at 80 to 84 degrees F in damp vermiculite.

3-Toed Box Turtle. 3 females Two clutches of eggs were induced wlth Oxytocin on 26 February and 14May for a total of 7 eggs. Two clutches were laid on 10 May and 16 June in an outside turtle pen with a total of 8 eggs. A total of 6 hatched with an incubatlon t1me ranging from 68 to 95 days. 2 eggs were full term but died while pipping and 5 eggs were 1nfertl1e. 5 female are kept w1th 3 males year round. They spend the summer outSide and are hibernated from early November to late March.
