Dan Nedrelo has been studying Wisconsin's amphibians and reptiles for many years. He has served on several conunittees relating to herpetology. He will ta1k. about studies of herps currently being done by people in Wisconsin. He will present slides of the uncommon and unusual Wisconsin amphibians and reptiles as well as the people studying them.

SPECIAL ELECTION FOR TREASURER MHS Treasurer Gloria Anton has found it necessary to resign her office for personal reasons.

Gloria has served as treasurer for 1 1/4 years. She has contributed a lot to M..HS in thi~ time and we

thank her for her hard work.

A special election to fill the office will be held at the July meeting p There is currently one candidate for the office. That person is Marilyn Brooks. Marilyn currently serves as Newsletter Assembly Coordinator and is a member of the Midwest Symposium Committee. She was the moving force behind the organization of the MHS Student Chapter and served as the frrst Student Chapter President Marilyn has a1so been active in the "hands-on " programs and was the chairperson for the 1989 Holiday Banquet Addiuonal nominations will be accepted from the floor.

HELP A HAPLESS HERP At the June meeting there were no animals up for adoption. At the July meeting the following animals will be available for adoption:Spotted Tegu, Black Spiny Toads, Surinam Toad, 2 Crested Newts, and 2 Burmese Pythons .. 7 ft and 10 ft.). A few additional animals may also be available.

Anyone with animals to go up for adoption should contact Fred Bosman prior to the meeting.

JUNE PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS The program at the June meeting was "Gila Monster Husbandry and Breeding" by John Meltzer.

The presentation began with some general natural Historyinfonnation about Gila Monsters. The Gila Monster is one of two venomous lizards in the world. The other is the beaded lizard. There are two subspecies of Gila Monsters. The Reticulated (Heloderma suspectum suspectum) occurs from Sonora, Mexico into southern Arizona, and the extreme southwestern corner of New Mexico.

The Banded (Heloderma suspectum cinctum) occurs in the extreme western and northwestern parts of Arizona with isolated populations in Utah, Nevada, and California. The habitat Gila Monsters can be found in is desert and scrub woodland areas. Much of their time is spent underground al1hough 1hey are diurnal and will come out to bask and seek food .. The prey of this lizard includes newborn and nestling young of rodents, rabbits, and hares. This is supplemented with birds, other lizards, and the eggs of birds, lizards, snakes, turtles and tortoises. Eggs of the desert (Gambel's) quail are readily eaten.

The venom of Gila Monsters is in the saliva. The danger of there bite depends on how long the animal is able to inject venom. While most bites are minor some can be serious and even fatal. Gila Monsters are a protected species. It is illegal to collect them from the wild. They can only be obtained from a captive breeder.

John has the Reticulated Gila Monsters. He feeds them mice, rats, and chicks - all they want, once a week. He stops feeding them December 1. He then turns off their lights and moves them to a cool corner of the basement where they will stay through February. When wanned up they will begin breeding immediately. Gravid females are fed a mixture of cat food and eggs. They are provided a cat litter box with moist sand. Eggs are laid at the end of June. Last year his female laid 5 eggs in one hour. He incubared the eggs in lightly dampened vermiculite kept in a shoe box with holes drilled in it They were kept at 85 degrees Fahrenheit Of the 5 eggs, 3 were hatched successfully.

This year John tried to fonow the very same procedure but he was not successful in getting offspring. John mentioned that sexing Gila Monsters is very difficult because probing doesn't work. He finds it best to compare individuals in a group. Males seem to have a broader head with big jowls and be stockier bodied while the females have a triangular head and have a smaller build.

CRITTER OF THE MONTH Critter of the month in May was "monster" lizards. There was a nice variety of animals. Critters on display were Green Iguana, Prehensile-tailed Skink, Anole, Butterfly Agama - 2, Savannah Monitor, Slender Glass lizard, Eastern Glass Lizard, Bearded Dragon, Gargoyle Lizard, and Gila Monster.

The people who brought these animals were Andrew Newman, Bruce Haig, Josh Yank, Larry Yank, Logan and Jane Odegard, John Moriarty, Aaron Hampton, and JOM Meltzer.

BOARD MEETING The meeting was held on June 2 at the home of Demrls Daly. The meeting was called to order by John Moriarty at 7: 19. In attendance were Gloria Anton, Marilyn Brooks, Fred and liz Bosman, Fred Bozvay, Dennis Daly, Bruce nelles, Greg Kvanbek, John Meltzer, John Moriarty, Bill Moss, Ann POlWoll, Mary Ann Waldorf and Jo Anne Wetherell-Moriarty. Vence Jimerson was absent The Secretary's minutes were read and minor corrections were made. The Treasurer's report was presented. On April 25 one of the CDs was rolled over for an additional 3 months. Gloria submitted her resignation citing personal reasons. A special election will be held at the July meeting.

President's Report John distributed copies of the articles of incorporation. This will combine the Constitution and Bylaws into one document A few minor adjustments were submitted 10 the lawyer. An annual audit of funds will now be required. As a non-profit organization, MHS is not tax -exempt, however, federal tax returns need not be filed for incomes less than $25,000 per year. John will look into getting a state tax nmnber.

Vice President's Report John Meltzer has speakers confirmed through October and is working on November. A good variety of programs is planned.

Old Business -There were no entries in the T-shirt design contest. This was a big disappointment The deadline for entry will be extended. It is hoped 1hat a new shirt will be available for sale at the Midwest Symposium in October. Members will be polled about the style of shirt they would like.

-Wmdow decals should be available by the next meeting. The plan is to distribute these one per membership in the next newsletter. They will also be offered for sale.

-The recycled paper has been ordered and the next newsletter will be the frrst one printed on it New Business -The topic of whether to have a picnic this year was raised. Several locations were suggested. The membership will be poned and a call for a chairperson will be made at the next meeting.

-The Desert Tortoise Preserve Council has made a request for a donation. The decision was made to donate $50 with the stipulation that it go toward land acquisition.

-Rats may become more difficult to obtain during the sunnner months and the number purchased per member may need to be limited. The possibility of purchasing rats to make sure the service is available to members was covered. Thls could mean higher prices. This will be done. The board voted to raise the price of rat pups to $6.00 per dozen.

Round Table -The adoption Committee was reviewed. Fred Bosvay volunteered to replace John Meltzer as a board representative. Fred Bosman will continue as chairperson. New appointments were discussed and will be tinalized by the next meeting. The group again discussed sending out a questionnaire to those members who have adopted animals. It will include a stamped, addressed postcard to return with information about the status of adopted animals. Fred Bosman will be working on this project. It was suggested that a future Critter of the Month be adopted animals.

-Bruce Delles presented several new books for purchase consideration. The board voted to buy them for the library. It was suggested that a second copy of some of the more popular books be purchased. The librarians will be asked to make suggestions.

-Bill Moss reported that only 5 people had signed up for Como ZDo Hands-on. He will call people to recruit volunteers.

The meeting Vilas adjourned at 9:52 and refreslunents were served.

MINNESOTA HERPETOLOGICAL SOCIETY

VENOMOUS REPTILE POLICY The Minnesota Herpetological Society does not encourage, recommend, nor promote the keeping of any species of venomous reptiles by private individuals ..

Persons who feel a need to keep venomous reptiles should seriously consider their decision. The Minnesota Herpetological Society strongly encourages these people to consider the following suggestions prior to obtaining any venomous reptiles.

1. Learn about the care and husbandry techniques needed to provide a healthy and

secure enviromnent for the animals.

2. Establish a protocol for feeding and cleaning of the animals, so as to reduce risks of bites to the keeper and others.

3. Establish a protocol for first-aid in case of a bite from the venomous reptile.

4. Never keep a venomous reptile that does not have a local source of antivenin.

5. Never provide untrained persons or minors with venomous reptiles.

6. Never allow minors to keep venomous reptiles.

7. Always remember that there is a risk of serious injury or death from working with venomous reptiles.

Minnesota Herpetological Society members who deliberately and publicly display conduct opposed to these policies may have their membership revoked.

PRICE INCREASE Due to a decrease in supply by our rat source it will become necessary for MHS to buy rats in order to continue this service to members. For this reason, the the price of rat pups has been increased to $6.00 per dozen. 1hls increase is effective immediately.

MHS T-SHIRT DESIGN CONTEST No entries were received in the contest for a new MHS T-shirt design. A new shirt would be a great addition to the Midwest Symposium and might even make some money for MHS. For this reason, the deadline has been extended to August 3. Designs may be brought to the meeting on that night or mailed in advance.

Roles: Only one-color designs will be considered. The design must incorporate a Minnesota theme. The board reserves the right to cancel the contest if no acceptable entries are submitted.

At the July meeting members will be polled an their preference for the style of shirt preferred.

Possibilities include regular T-shirt, long sleeve T-shirt, polo shirt, and sweatshirt. Think about it.

HELP WANTED The MRS newsletter has an opening for a reporter. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, writing a summary of the meeting programs to be published in the newsletter. Minimal book research is sometimes required. Qualifications include somewhat regular attendance at the monthly meetings and the ability to meet a deadline. The pay is lousy and the boss is a slave driver but you will get to see YOlrr name in print. Only serious applicants need apply. PHANTASTIC PHENOLOGICAL PHINDS There were no phenological phinds turned in. Apparently, MHS members are pretty lousy at spotting herps outdoors.If anyone had been out there what you might have seen were turtles laying eggs. In past years there have been records of Snapping Turtles, Painted Turtles, and Softshell Turtles. A non-MRS member did report the following: Week of June 17, Lake Phalen, St Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota.

Please share your phinds with your fellow members by mailing them or giving them to the Newsletter Editor at the monthly meetings. Identify the herp as well as possible. Give common name and scientific name, if possible. Report the date and time of the sighting. Be as exact as possible about the location - county, township, etc. Give as much information as you can.

SNAPPING TURTLE BITES OFF

THAN IT CAN CHEW

A large (32 lb. ) , one year old Trumpeter Swan was killed by a Snapping Turtle at Henry Lake in western Hennepin County. On May 13, 1990, a local resident noticed a swan laying in the water.

When the person paddled out to the swan a large (referred to as over 3 ft) snapper was fOWld to be attached to the swan's neck. The dead bird was brought to the Hennepin Parks office and the bird was sent to the University of Minnesota for necropsy.

The necropsy report showed that there was food in the mouth and throat of the bird. There was also water and mud in its trachea and lUngs. This indicates that the swan was drowned by the turtle and not that the turtle was simply scavenging on the dead bird.

Why would a Snapping Turtle take a bird as large as a Trumpeter Swan? It was really hungxy -no. It made a mistake -- yes. Snapping Turtles nonnally feed on fISh, frogs, carrion, vegetation, etc. They will take swans on a rare occasion and usually the swans are less than two weeks old. In this case, the swan probably stuck its head under water in front of the stationary turtle. The turtle saw the smaller head and did not realize what is was attached to.

SNAKE PULLS TRIGGER, HUNTER FATALLY SHOT Nicosia, Cyprus - An Iranian hunter was shot to death recently near Tehran by a snake that coiled itself around his shotgun as he pinned the reptile to the ground, the Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

The report quoted another hunter as saying that the victim, Ali-Asghar Ahani, tried to catch the snake alive by pressing the butt of his shotgun behind its head. But the snake coiled around the butt and accidentally pulled the trigger with its thrashing tail.

BREEDING NOTES Bertha, the 148 inch Burmese Python (Python molurus ) who resides at Cumberland High School, has laid eggs each of the last two years.Jack Walsh submitted the following information.

March 31,1989: 19 eggs laid. Eggs were incubated in an Isolette temperature and humidity controlled incubator for two months but failed to hatch. Possible reasons include 1.) Bertha and the male, Khan, were not separated for 4 to 6 weeks prior to mating, 2.) The male's sperm were not present in sufficient quantities or were not viable during mating, or 3.) the eggs were incubated artificially rather than allowing the female to incubate them herself.

Several changes were made in an attempt to avoid a repeat of the 1989 failure. These include: 1.) separating the male and female for 6 weeks prior to mating, 2.) cages were cooled from a normal of 84 degrees Fahrenheit down to 70 for 6 weeks and 3.) the female would be allowed to incubate her own eggs.

March 2, 1990: 25 eggs laid. The female's instincts took over and she incubated them herself.

Between 4 and 16 muscle spasms per minute could be seen running down the snakes coils. These spasms help the snake to keep its body temperature as much as 5 degrees above room temperature.

The snake did not eat while incubating the eggs. After 65 days the eggs had not hatched and the decision was made to open them. None of the baby pythons were alive. Of the 25 eggs, four had perfectly formed babies inside. For some unknown reason the babies did not or could not escape break. open the eggs.
