The Purpose of the Minnesota Herpetological Society is to: • Further the education of the membership and the general public in care and captive propagation of reptiles and amphibians; • Educate the members and the general public in the ecological role of reptiles and amphibians; • Promote the study and conservation of reptiles and amphibians.

The Minnesota Herpetological Society is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization.

Membership is open to all individuals with an interest in amphibians and reptiles. The Minnesota Herpetological Society Newsletter is published monthly to provide its members with information concerning the society’s activities and a media for exchanging information, opinions and resources.

General Meetings are held at Borlaug Hall, Room 335 on the St. Paul Campus of the University of Minnesota, on the first Friday of each month (unless there is a holiday conflict). The meeting starts at 7:00pm and lasts about three hours. Please check the MHS Voice mail for changes in schedules or cancellations.

Many of these declines have occurred in protected areas such as national parks and wildlife refuges with no outward signs of habitat alteration. This suggests that less visible changes may be influencing declines such as climate change, contaminants, introduced species, and disease.

Scientists have been concerned about a global decline in amphibian populations for the last two decades. Because of their close association with water (many species nave aquatic larvae) and sensitivity to different environmental stressors, due in part to their permeable skin, amphibians are considered good indicators of general environmental health.

Habitat destruction is a major cause of amphibian declines.

Leopard frog (Rana Pipiens) populations are declining throughout their range.

Northern cricket frog (Acris crepitans) populations are declining throughout the northern portion of their range, including Minnesota.

In response to these concerns, Congress and the President, in 2000, directed the U.S. Geological Survey, part of the Department of the Interior, to undertake a national Amphibian Research and Monitoring Initiative (ARMI).

ARMI is charged with measuring, understanding, and responding to the effects of environmental change on amphibian populations in the U.S. and it’s territories.

ARMI has four research goals: to provide the first nationwide assessment of the current distribution and status of amphibian populations; understand the scope and severity of amphibian

declines throughout the U.S.; determine the causes of declines; and provide essential scientific information to support effective management actions in order to arrest or reverse these declines.

April’s speaker, Walt Sadinski, is director of the Upper Mississippi Region of ARMI and works out of the Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. His job is to implement and execute the Amphibian Research and Monitoring Initiative (ARMI) in 13 states of the Upper Midwest.

Population declines of northern leopard frogs (Rana pipiens) and cricket frogs (Acris crepitans) are perhaps the most notable in this region.

Dr. Sadinski will discuss the ARMI project overall as well as research specific to the Upper Midwest. This will be a remarkable talk that will discuss the important and sometimes controversial interface of science and public policy.

News, Notes & Announcements Board Blanding’s Turtle volun- MHS teers needed, June 2004 Review Volunteers are needed in June to help with a study on Blanding’s turtles at several Three Rivers Park District Park Reserves. Volunteers are needed in the evenings between 6 and 9 pm to walk park trails to look for moving or nesting Blanding’s turtles. Turtles will then be marked for future identification, and some will also have transmitters attached so they can be tracked by radio telemetry. The study is taking place at Crow Hassan Park Reserve west of Rogers, Elm Creek Park in Osseo, and MurphyHanrehan Park in Prior Lake. If you are interested in volunteering at Crow Hassan or Elm Creek Parks, please contact Madeleine Linck at Three Rivers Park District, ______ To volunteer at Murphy-Hanrehan Park, contact Jeanine Refsnider at the University of Minnesota, We will hold a short informational meeting at each park in late May to talk about study area, methods, and to coordinate schedules, and to sign up as official Park District Blanding’s Turtle Monitors.

March Meeting Review

In lieu of a speaker this month, MHS held their yearly White Snake Sale. The White Snake Sale is held as a fundraiser for the Minnesota Herpetological Society, and it is one of the largest fundraisers that we hold during the year. The sale consists of items put up for silent auction that members and vendors have donated to raise funds for the Society that members can bid on. Members walk through the aisles of tables set up with items, and view those for sale, then, they write their member number on a bid sheet along with their bid amount in US dollars. Each round consists of about 20 minutes of bidding which leave ample time for everyone to check out all the items.

There were many, many, items up for auction. There were many nice retile cages both glass and wire along with many decorator items for the home which of course were in reptile motifs. Many vendors donated various food items along with cage display pieces and some reptile jewelry. There were two rounds of auction items for the members to bid on.

After the photo contest being held in the general meeting room, all members could come back to the sales room for checkout and pay for their items. Everyone has a great time at this event. So, just for a reminder, start collecting items for the sale for next year. We need everyone to participate to have another successful sale. Thanks so much to everyone who helped to make the operation run smoothly. Also, thanks to all members and vendors who donated items. MHS appreciates all your assistance and support.

Midwinter Adventure

It rained intermittently, and heavy at times, but it failed to accumulate at all in the pond. The next day, we checked the pitfalls to see if any gopher frogs were active, but none were found during the entire event. We found southern toads in the pitfall, as well as a mole salamander (Ambystoma Southern toad talpoideum). After the traps were ground skinks (Scincella lateralis), checked, cleared, and the approprigulf coast toad (Bufo valliceps), ate data recorded, Noah and I were southern leopard frog (Rana utricu- on our way to the Kennedy Space laria), red-eared sliders (Trachemys Center in Florida where we would scripta elegans). (Farancia abacura abacura)! This is a “dream species” you only hope to see during a herp trip, but usually eludes people on most excursions. The mud snake was about three feet long, which is a nice size to find, but by no means as big as

they get. As we opened the trap we could tell the snake had just gorged itself on a large greater siren (Siren lacertina). The snake likely entered the trap after the siren was already in it. The siren was about the same size as the mud snake! Needless to say after even minimal handling, the snake regurgitated the siren.

The mud snake was beautiful, and in good condition. It posed nicely for photos before we released it.

We let the regurgitated siren go, too, but it didn’t go anywhere. As we drove down the road, we found a peninsula cooter (Pseudemys

peninsularis) turtle crossing the road. These are pretty large turtles, dwarfing the “pond turtles” we have here in Minnesota, excluding snapping and softshell turtles, or course! The turtle was marked and

released. Then we came across a gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) grazing along side of the road. We photographed it, marked it, and let it go on its way.

The next day we made the rounds of checking the traps. As I looked down the bank of the canal, I saw the head of a large peninsula cooter poking above the water’s surface close to shore. I sprinted down the bank toward it and jumped on it. It was another large specimen.

Rich was happy about the catch as these turtles do not readily enter baited traps. They feed mostly upon aquatic vegetation during their adult lives. In fact, as we photographed the turtle, it had some vegetation hanging from the corner

of its mouth. This one was obviously a messy eater. It had a brighter shell than the one we found on the road. We marked it as number 83.

It was a good siren day as we caught many greater sirens in the minnow traps. Sirens look like eels but with external gills and two arms near the head. We also caught the usual compliment of tadpoles, small frogs, and fish. This was launch week for the space shuttle “Olympia”. This caused problems not only because there were certain areas on the island that were off-limits, but every time they were about to launch, we couldn’t perform field work. We also couldn’t leave the island during these peri-

ods. The launch was delayed each time. In fact, it did not lift off the during the entire time we were there.

at this location, and the thick palmetto begins only a few feet off the road. You could see nice large burrows everywhere. At one spot, we pulled off the road and as Noah got out he began to scream and yell “Adamanteus! adamanteus!” We had just pulled up alongside an eastern diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus) laying on the shoulder as if perfectly planned! The hooks were in the back of the jeep and Noah was panicking. We tried to get the hooks out as fast as possible, but they were buried under more recently used gear! The snake

At one spot, we pulled off the road and as Noah got out he began to scream and yell “Adamanteus! adamanteus!” began to move toward the palmettos, which were only a few feet away. If the snake reaches the thicket, it would be gone. Rich and I began throwing gear around as Noah watched the beautiful rattler reach the brush and begin to disappear. Finally, one of us freed a hook and threw it at Noah who just Page 7

barely had enough time to hook it out of the thick palmettos and into the open where we could work with the snake easily and safely. Had we

been another second, Noah may have been tempted to grab the snake! The rattler was about four feet long, heavy bodied with a nice chunky head. We were all very excited to have caught this species!

It was the first one Rich had seen on the island in four or five years. It rattled the whole time, but was more

interested in escaping than striking, which is good for handling, but bad for photography. It finally settled down for a nice photography session, after which Rich wandered off to explore. Noah and I used this time to practice our TV personality skills as we began to speak with an Australian accent and took turns tail walking and free handling the “beautiful beast”! JUST KIDDING!!

Like the mud snake, the eastern diamondback rattlesnake was a species I really hoped to see, but I Page 8

knew we may not catch one. They are declining rapidly throughout their range, and it becomes tougher and tougher to find them, even in areas where they were once very common.

A few stops later found us at Brook Shannon Trail. We found numerous brown anoles (Anolis sagrei) along a waterway which is next to the trail.

Back at the parking area, we were getting ready to move on when I noticed a wooden post that had fallen over. There was leaf litter everywhere and it was so dense that one third of the post was buried. I flipped the post and…nothing. But I just stared for a bit as I usually do when I don’t immediately see anything under an object, just in case. The depression left by the post in the leaf litter was distinctive. My eye caught what looked like part of a small band ALONG SIDE the post depression, not under it. I picked it up and discovered an absolutely stunning snake! It was a species that was higher up on the wish list than the mud or the eastern diamondback, and much more difficult to find on the island. It was a scarlet kingsnake (Lampropeltis triangulum elapsoides )!!! This little gem was about 10 inches long and had a sassy attitude. Every time I picked it up it would turn and chew on my hand. Of course, the snake was so small it could do no harm.

Unbelievable! This was turning out to be an excellent trip. This was only the third scarlet kingsnake ever documented on the island, so it was good for everyone! After a frustrating photo session (the kingsnake did not want to sit still), we did some

gator watching. We had seen several throughout the trip, but this night we were going to go out to find

American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) specifically and just watch them and take photos of them. We were successful and had a good night of it, but these notes could be another article! Afterward, we found a sinkhole that looked good for newts, so we set a couple minnow traps.

planirostris). It was cloudy and cold that day, so not much was out. We didn’t find any new species that day, but did manage to find some common species.

Later that evening, we checked the minnow traps that we set the night before. We caught about six peninsula newts (Notophthalmus viridescence piaropicola) and as an added bonus, we got a two-toed amphiuma (Amphiuma means). We reset the traps for additional night.

Thursday found us at the Dynamac Corporation on the Kennedy Space Center. Becky Smith, a wildlife ecologist for Dynamac, is radio-tracking eastern indigo snakes (Drymarchon corias couperi). Today, we were releasing a five and a half foot indigo that was caught a week ago on a

ter, although it was marked before being set free. We spent the day tracking other indigos, many of which were hiding in burrows. It was great to see work being done on these impressive yet gentle snakes.

Indigos are beautiful with their pitch black satin appearance. A lot is being learned through this, and another, radio-tracking project on indigos. I was surprised at the high number of snakes that used residential areas. Obviously, this is not their preferred habitat, but because much of their habitat is gone, they have little choice. One fortunate aspect is that indigos spend a lot of time underground or concealed, so they are relatively undetectable in these urban areas. Otherwise, they are not habitat specific, being found in a wide variety of natural habitats, and not linked to gopher tortoise burrows as closely as once believed. They will use tortoise burrows, as well as any other burrow or cover they can find.

It was raining and only 65 degrees F. after tracking the snakes, so we decided to check the newt traps. We got four more newts and then pulled the traps out. We looked around for the remainder of the day, but because it was cool, we did not find too much.

The next morning, we were set to leave the Kennedy Space Center and head back to Louisiana, but first we stopped and met Tom Ostertag and looked for salamanders at Eglin Air Force Base located near Crestview in Northeastern Florida.

We encountered slimy salamanders on the steep bluff leading to the cool ravines with clear streams below.

grobmani) are black with bright white speckles and act more like lizards than salamanders! They can run fast and will hop out of your hands. Very neat to find! The slime of these salamanders is really sticky, and will attract dirt all day, and will not wash off for days. Down the ravine, we found Florida cricket frogs (Acris gryllus dorsalis), southern red salamander (Pseudotriton ruber), rusty mud salamander (Pseudotriton montanus floridanus), southern two-lined salamander (Eurycea cirrigera), and southern dusky salamander (Desmognathus ariculatus).

Then it was back to Louisiana. The following day I was to head back to cold and snowy Minnesota, so I spent a couple hours trying to find the one snake everyone said I was

sure to see…a cottonmouth.

However, we didn’t see one in Louisiana or Florida, which was amazing, but I would be back to Louisiana and would be successful.

An excellent trip and wonderful remedy for the wintertime blahs! I found most of the species I hoped for and some I never dreamed I would see!

We had a great turn-out this year, and some really good photographs and artwork were displayed by our members. It’s evident that we have a very talented group!. The membership enjoyed looking at the entries and spent a lot of time viewing and commenting about them.

The voting in some of the categories was very close, for example, in the Peoples Choice category,

VOLUNTEERS

2003 volunteer hours are up this year to a total of almost 6500 hours. An increase from 4600 the prior year due in part to a change in the number of hours allotted for various activities that were and continue to be underreported. However, activities such as Pet Expo and Renfest continue to boost the total overall volunteer hours. Some interesting numbers include, 171 people volunteered for an average of 38 hours per person. About 60% of volunteers have greater than 10 hours. Lastly we are gaining about 10 volunteers a year - that equals 50 new people in 2003. The list of volunteers is separated by number of hours volunteered in the last year. Those over ten will receive a thank you gift from MHS at the April 2nd meeting. For all those who donated less then 10 hours we are also grateful that you were able to donate what time you had to help the Society. The gift is merely an incentive and reward for those who can and do go the extra mile.

We hope that all those who will volunteer next year can achieve whatever goal they set. Randy Blasus, President
