THE PURPOSE OF THE MINNESOTA HERPETOLOGICAL SOCIETY IS TO: • Further the education of the membership and the general public in care and captive propagation of reptiles and amphibians; • Educate the members and the general public in the ecological role of reptiles and amphibians; • Promote the study and conservation of reptiles and amphibians.

The Minnesota Herpetological Society is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization. Membership is open to all individuals with an interest in amphibians and reptiles. The Minnesota Herpetological Society Newsletter is published monthly to provide its members with information concerning the society’s activities and a media for exchanging information, opinions and resources.

General Meetings are held at Borlaug Hall, Room 335 on the St. Paul Campus of the University of Minnesota, on the first Friday of each month (unless there is a holiday conflict). The meeting starts at 7:00pm and lasts about three hours. Please check the MHS Voice mail for changes in schedules or cancellations.

DR. DANIEL KEYLER In the Field with New York’s Timber Rattlesnakes

Dr. Dan Keyler, a longtime MHS member, will be presenting on New York’s Timber Rattlesnakes at the March 5th meeting, and will follow it up with a video that depicts their behavior in the wild.

Dr. Keyler has been actively involved with venomous snakes for over 30 years.

The natural history, conservation and biology of the Timber Rattlesnake has been his passion since he was young. Dan is part of the Timber Rattlesnake Conservation Action Plan, a national committee for the conservation of the Timber Rattlesnake.

Over the years, he has received multiple research grants to study Timber Rattlesnakes in the Upper Mississippi River Valley. One of these grants was with one of our very own MHS members, Jeff LeClere.

venomous snakebites. He has been involved in the treatment of over 200 bites, many of which involved exotic species. He served for 5 years as the Chairman of the Envenomations Section with the Medical Academy of Clinical Toxicology, and is the founding member of the Medical Advisory Committee to the Antivenom Index Online, as well as an author concerning the medical management of snakebites for the Antivenom Index.

Dan did his undergraduate studies at the University of Purdue and then came to the University of Minnesota, where he received his doctorate in Clinical Pharmacology.

Currently he is a Full Professor in the Department of Experimental & Clinical Pharmacology with the University of Minnesota. He is also a member of the faculty for the Department of Medicine, Hennepin County Medical Center; CoDirector of Toxicology Research, and the Minneapolis Medical Research Foundation.

Dan has authored or co-authored over one hundred articles in medical and scientific journals as well as multiple book chapters involving venomous snakebites, including a chapter on Timber Rattlesnake envenomations in the recent book, The Biology of Rattlesnakes.

An integral part of Dan’s professional career has been the medical treatment of

N EWS , N OTES , & A NNOUNCEMENTS Up Coming Hands-On Events What is Hands-On? When we attend our monthly MHS meetings, we listen to Jan Larson, our education committee chairperson announce upcoming Hands-On events. Have you ever wondered what she is talking about? Well, volunteer to help at one. Not only will you get to know other MHS members better, you help create the next generation of herp enthusiasts. Participate where and when you want.

You bring your own herp(s) to show and talk about to the people who stop by the table. You don’t make speeches to large audiences, you talk one-on-one to people who ask you questions about your animal. Parents: children are invited to participate if they have adults with them...a parent, older sibling, etc.

Requirements: The requirements are pretty basic. Bring only healthy animals. Make sure you know the basic information: what they eat, how long they live, adult size, cage requirements. There are no size limits as long as the handler can control the animal and is comfortable with it. We don't let viewers pet the head and don't allow them to hold the animal. If the animal is very young, display in a cage not hand-held. It is a good way to free ourselves from no longer used herp-related items and purchasing items we really need at really reasonable prices. Its a win-win situation!

Remember--there is something at the White Snake Sale for Everyone!

The photos/art projects will be on display in the meeting room during the April Meeting (White Snake Sale). All MHS members get to vote for their favorite entries. Voting will take place during the meeting and winners will be announced the same evening.

We ask that all donations be clean, serviceable, and in good order. Remember, it should be something that you would buy, not just toss for lack of space. If you have large items such as cages, just bring a photo with a description, including dimensions. I f photos of items are being sent by email, please send to Ellen Heck MnHerpSoc.RecSec@Gmail.com. To insure than we receive photos in time and have time to print them out, We request that we receive emailed photos no later than Thursday, rather than on the Friday o f the sale. If it sells, the new owner will contact you and pick it up!

RULES: – You must be a current member of the MHS and be the one that took the photograph. However, you do not need to own the herp in the photo.

– All entries need to show herps or be herp related.

– Color and / or black and white photographs are acceptable.

– Artwork is defined as sculptures, drawings, paintings, etc.

– Photos should be no smaller than 5 x 7 and no larger than 11x 14 (outside dimension).

– Mounting or matting of photos/art is recommended but not necessary.

– Members are allowed to submit up to 2 photos/items in each category.

– On the back of the photo, please include: your name and which category you want your picture to compete in.

CATEGORIES: Herps in the Wild / In a Natural Setting: Photographs of animal(s) taken outside and/or in a natural setting.A natural setting that has been staged is also permitted.

Herps and Humans / Non-Wild Setting: Subject(s) should be in a non-wild setting – i.e. photographs taken around your home, on or with something that is manmade. Some examples of this are: herps in their cages, people holding a herp, or photographs of animals taken at a zoo.

Kid’s Division Any photo/artwork submission by a member who is 16 years of age or younger.

Mixed Media: Herp related artwork by a member or photographs taken by a member that have been altered/enhanced using photo editing software in any manner other than cropping.

People’s Choice: Members will also vote for one submission from the above categories that they feel is the best overall photograph / piece of artwork.The submission that receives the most votes is the winner of this category.

FEBRUARY SPEAKER REVIEW:

by Ellen Heck The speaker at the February was Dr Amy Kizer from the Lexington Pet Clinic. She spoke briefly at the October 2008 meeting but expanded on that at this meeting. She graduated From the University of Minnesota in 2002 with a degree in veterinary medicine. Dr Kizer has a special interest in all exotic pets, including fish. In addition to the Lexington clinic, she also checks up on the animals in the Underwater Adventures at the Mall of America.

One of the most difficult issues facing the owner of a reptile that seems to not be doing well is the question of when should the animal be taken in to see the vet?

Reptiles and amphibians are notorious for frequently not showing overt signs of illness. She suggested the following guidelines for assessing the need to bring an animal in: –Anorexia – this needs to be determined in conjunction with how long is it normal for the animal to go without eating.

Sometimes it is a normal, seasonal thing which can last for months.

–Integument disease – this includes skin disease, lesions, missing scales or scutes, redness –Prolonged lethargy – this again can be difficult to assess in reptiles as they often don’t move much –Any lump or bump The veterinary approach to disease in reptiles and amphibians is similar to what is done on mammals, although in the case of some animals like crocodilians, it may not be as hands-on. The exam is still the most important piece of the diagnosis, although discussion with the owner

regarding the housing and feeding of the animal is also important since many diseases are husbandry-related.

Getting an accurate weight is important albeit challenging – some animals don’t weigh much. Standard diagnostics techniques such as fecal test, blood work and biopsy can be used.

Technology-related diagnostics such as radiographs, ultra-sound and CT scan are options as well.

There is no one rule for diagnosing and treating all reptiles and amphibians, since these groups encompass a wide variety of animals of differing size and anatomy with very distinct husbandry and dietary needs. For example, surgery on a 24 gram gecko will not be done in the same manner as it would be in a large monitor, even though they are in the same order of species.

However, the most common reasons most animals are brought in are anorexia and lethargy. These are not very specific complaints, so more investigation is usually needed.

Common problems in snakes can also include dysecdysis, retained eye caps, bite wounds from live prey, mites, burns from an inappropriate cage set up, reproductive issues and ophthalmic disease. For diagnosis, radiographs can be useful in determining origin of a lump, inside body or in muscle, or in the case of impaction.

Geckos are one of the more commonly seen animals, due primarily to their popularity in the pet trade. Besides the

usual anorexia and lethargy, they also can suffer from dysecdysis and impactions from being kept on a granular substrate.

Retained eye caps and other eye-related issues are also common.

Bearded dragons are another commonly kept reptile. Common diseases for them include impaction and reproductive issues. Other health issues may related to an improper diet. The diet for the beardies changes as the animals grows. Juveniles require mostly protein with some greens to grow properly, but as they become adults, the focus of their diet needs to shift towards the herbivore side.

UV light is recommended to metabolize calcium properly.

Chameleons also require UVB to metabolize calcium properly. They primarily eat live moving insects and some vegetation. High humidity is very important for them. Common diseases in them include metabolic bone disease and abscesses/infections. Most abscesses need to be treated aggressively with surgical debridement.

Metabolic bone disease, or MBD, is a common problem, generally seen in chameleons and iguanas and usually caused by a lack of dietary calcium and/or vitamin D. UVB light is necessary for their bodies to process calcium. Low calcium causes the body to get the calcium from another source – their bones. Over time, this can lead to many fractures of the weakened bones. The solution, if the animal is not too far gone, is to correct the diet and husbandry.

MBD can also be caused by renal issues. Kidney failure causes an increase phosphorus levels and decreased calcium metabolism. Its symptoms are similar to the nutritional form. Treatment involves fluid therapy for kidney dieresis.

Iguanas can also have problems with their long, thin tails, which seem prone to

Watching the Wild Snakes Feed

I

have always preached the benefits of standing still and watching nature take its course. The watcher might be lucky enough to see something really dramatic.

One of my earliest memories of unexpected drama was when I was a boy living in the country west of Minneapolis.

My brother and I were crawling through the weeds toward a farmers strawberry patch hoping to eat a few sweet, fat strawberries before the farmer chased us away.

It was a game we often played and I think the farmer enjoyed it as much as we did.

But when we finally parted the weeds at the edge of the patch, we saw a truly memorable sight. A common garter snake was stalking a sparrow!

As we kept pet garter snakes, we knew that their normal diet consisted of frogs, fish, and earthworms. The snake finally lunged and caught the leg of the bird in its mouth and as the sparrow struggled to fly, it repeatedly lifted the snake nearly off the ground. After about twenty seconds, the bird flew off, leaving the hungry snake behind. I wasn’t sure if the snake just gave up or if the bird got lucky, but I do know that the bird was way too big for the snake to swallow, especially with a leg hold and no venom or constriction to subdue the bird. And garter snakes don’t eat birds! Do they?

Many years later in the desert of west Texas another attempted predation was witnessed. This time I was peering into a giant stand of prickly pear cactus. The cactus was about ten feet tall and roughly

formed a circle with a room sized clearing in the center. I saw an adult western coachwhip snake chasing an adult patchnosed snake through the clearing. As these two snake species are among the fastest of snakes it was quite a race.

The coachwhip did catch the other snake in its mouth, but the patch-nosed snake twisted and thrashed about and was able to break free. And the chase was on again! The snakes circled toward me and once again the squirming prey escaped and sped off through some very thick cactus, leaving the coachwhip behind. And that left me thinking, “This is like a Disney movie!” But once again, nature proved more captivating than the stuff Hollywood comes up with.

As a conservationist and preservationist I was awed by the giant stumps and log sections in the coastal hills south of San Francisco. These relics were the remnants of unbelievably large trees cut down in the last century, and those cutters left no big trees for their offspring to see and enjoy.

Some of these stumps were as big as the garage where I park my little car. The new trees that grew in were pretty big too, but there was a lot of undergrowth, and that made the going really tough if you wanted to trek through it. We climbed over logs, clawed our way through very nasty spiny shrubs, and finally, EEK! The back of my elbow was on fire with the most searing pain imaginable. I’ve been stung by bees, wasps, and my favorite, fire ants, but this was a sting of a whole new level. I reached back there and felt a tick, I’d done that enough here in Minnesota, but this tick was truly evil.

I twisted and plucked it out, as per advice,

and admired the dark brown, white striped, pointy headed little beast. Well, not really admired (hated), and after about five minutes the pain lessened and I could once again think of herps.

Whoa! A garter snake! A very fat garter snake. As we startled it, the snake began an evasive technique, Barfing!

It exuded a yellow, thick, six inch long mollusk, making the snake once again slender, and it hurried off into the brush, not to be seen again.

Its meal had been a banana slug, the state mollusk of California. We felt bad for causing the loss of the garter snakes meal and also regretted the wasted death of a state critter, but I did add a new food item to my list of garter snake edibles.

Also on this hike we found several alligator lizards, of which all had their lateral folds packed with tick larvae. And the frequent streams had several western newts. And Oh Yes! We also found a Califormia mountain king snake, one of the most beautiful snakes found in the U.S. This snake was a star in my reptile programs for many years.

This was one of the most memorable herping hikes I have ever been on, and I still recall it every time I eat a banana.

Minnesota Herpetological Society Board Minutes for January 9, 2010 Treasurer’s Report Nancy made an unofficial report for December. The ending balance is below $25,000 so the MHS can still use the short 990 form. The biggest expenses for last year were the grants and conservation donations, totaling over $11,000.

Vice President’s Report The speaker for February will be Dr. Amy Kizer. April is the White Snake Sale. Tom Crutchfield is a possibility for May, or October. A member requested that the MHS get someone from HSUS in to speak and answer questions, since USArk and Marc Bailey have given one side of the issue. After discussion, it was decided to check into this, as well as contacting USArk and PIJAC for a list of potential questions to ask.

OLD BUSINESS Phone and Voice mail – The Skype account is set up; the numbers will be set up this month. The ? sheets will need to be printed with new numbers.

Petco Is Asked To Stop Adoption Of Exotic Pets Seized In Arlington, TX. Excerpt from Herpdigest posted Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010

ARLINGTON -- The SPCA of Texas asked Petco stores to cease adoptions Wednesday of 2,000 animals seized from U.S. Global Exotics because the effort violated its agreement with a wildlife welfare agency.

The SPCA had given the hamsters, fancy mice, lizards and snakes to Wild Rescue Inc. of Texas, an agency partnered with the Petco Foundation, a nonprofit linked to the pet store chain.

The Star-Telegram reported Wednesday that Wild Rescue was making the animals

The DNR has no guidelines for this, other than that they are a non-native species and it is illegal to release them. One suggestion is to have them humanely euthanized and distributed as classroom specimens.

Distributing them through the Asian market is another. The discussion was tabled until February.

The SPCA was aware of Wild Rescue's plans, but the agency stopped the effort Wednesday after learning that Petco required that the actual ownership of the animals be surrendered to the stores, which violated the agreement between SPCA and Wild Rescue, said Maura Davies, SPCA spokeswoman. "That gave the perception that the animals were going back into the pet trade industry," Davies said.

A Petco spokesman said the company was not seeking financial gain from the pet rescue. Wild Rescue, which works closely with Petco, is a separate nonprofit agency.

Reproductive issues and abscesses can also be problems.

Turtles and tortoises, being a diverse group of animals, can have a wide range of health issues. Aural abscess can be common in aquatic turtles as the tympanic membrane gets infected connected to lower part of the mouth.

SCUD (septicemic cutaneous ulcerative disease) is another problem, as are reproductive issues, bladder stones in softshell and land tortoises and respiratory infections. Treatment can be challenging; giving medication to an animal that can retreat completely into a hard shell can require much time and patience. Feeding tubes may need to be inserted to ensure proper supportive care.

Surgery may require cutting into the shell, which then needs to be re-attached with epoxy as it heals. However, depending on the exact nature of the surgery and the size of the animal, this may not always be an option.

"They were concerned that ... Petco and/or the foundation are somehow gaining benefit by the partnership," said Kevin Whalen, a Petco spokesman, adding that the adoption fee would have helped the foundation cover the cost of housing the animals. "That's not true. That's not our intent. We're extremely disappointed."

The 2,000 animals were among the 27,000-plus that Arlington seized Dec. 15 because of inhumane conditions found at U.S. Global Exotics, an international pet wholesaler. This month, the city turned custody of the animals over to the SPCA, which has placed many of them with zoos, animal sanctuaries and welfare groups.
