The purpose of the Minnesota Herpetological Society is to: • Further the education of the membership and the general public in care and captive propagation of reptiles and amphibians; • Educate the members and the general public in the ecological role of reptiles and amphibians; • Promote the study and conservation of reptiles and amphibians.

The Minnesota Herpetological Society is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization. Membership is open to all individuals with an interest in amphibians and reptiles. The Minnesota Herpetological Society Newsletter is published monthly to provide its members with information concerning the society’s activities and a media for exchanging information, opinions and resources.

General Meetings are held at Borlaug Hall, Room 335 on the St. Paul Campus of the University of Minnesota, on the first Friday of each month (unless there is a holiday conflict). The meeting starts at 7:00pm and lasts about three hours. Please check the MHS Voice mail for changes in schedules or cancellations.

Submissions to the Newsletter Ads or Notices must be submitted no later than the night of the General Meeting to be included in the next issue. Longer articles will be printed as time and space allows and should be in electronic file format if possible.

How to Train Your Gator—Brandon Greaves Submitted by Beth Girard The speaker at the June Minnesota Herpetological Society meeting was Brandon L. Greaves. He has been the Lead Keeper in the Desert Zone Herpetology Department at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium for the past seven years. He has been instrumental in the zoo’s training program for their crocodilians. His passion for all things scaly began when he was very young. He included a photo of himself standing in awe of a giant tortoise when he was only three years old.

Mazuri ( http://www.mazuri.com/ )makes an exotic animal food, which is perfectly balanced for crocodilians. They hydrate it and basically make a meatball which they poke the pole into. The alligators are alerted to training time by the sound of a bucket being banged on the ground. They have been trained to line up at the water’s edge and wait to be tapped as the signal that it is their turn. The keepers do a lot of desensitization training with the alligators so The Desert Dome is the largest glazed geodesic dome in they can keep them from being overly anxious by stimulus the world and also the largest (apx. 42,000 square feet) when they are being examined. mating, nest guarding, etc. They have found that factors such as water level can have profound effects on breeding behavior. One drawback to training reptiles seems to be that food is one of the lone rewards, so it is difficult to find a motivator when the animal is not hungry. The alligators at the zoo receive the majority of their diet in training.

They may be given a few treats, but most is withheld for training time.

Artificial Insemination paired with Behavioral Training is particularly important with critically endangered species such as Philippine crocodiles (Crocodylus mindorensis) which the zoo also houses. They are hyper-aggressive toward their conspecifics, others of their species, which presents housing difficulties. There are as few as 200 of them left in the world and they are a top predator in their native environment. They are endemic to the Philippines and have been losing ground to exploitation and unsustainable fishing methods (such as dynamite fishing.) The five individuals (1.4) they have on exhibit in the Lied Jungle are on loan from the Fort Worth Zoo (Texas). Their enclosure has a mangrove swamp, land and water areas, and a holding pen. New meeting location for June, July and August Due to construction, the U of M will be closing Borlaug Hall for the summer. The June, July and August meetings will be held in Green Hall instead. As shown below, Green Hall is just across the parking lot from Borlaug. The same warnings about parking in the lot will still apply (if you park in the contract-only outer perimeter, you may be ticketed). The meeting time has not changed (it will still be at 7 PM with the social hour starting at 6:30)

MHS STATE FAIR VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The Minnesota Herpetological Society has been involved with exhibiting animals at the Minnesota State Fair since 1983.

The cages were added in 1987 and were built and painted by MHS members. Those cages were removed this year and a BRAND NEW HERP DISPLAY AREA is being built as we speak by a contractor for the Department of Natural Resources. We can’t wait to see what the new area looks like! It will be located east of where they have been for many years.

This year the fair runs from Thursday, August 22nd, until Monday, September 2nd. Daily care is provided by MHS members who volunteer to serve as Daily Investigators. Those volunteers receive two free tickets and must be in the DNR building just before it closes at 9pm so clean-up can be accomplished after the public has left the building.

If you are interested in serving in this capacity, please contact me, Beth Girard, at beth_girard@msn.com or 612/6168431. I will be at the July general meeting with a sign-up sheet. Volunteers should be fairly competent snake handlers as we will have snakes of all sizes and speeds. The enclosures are a little awkward to work with (both low and high) and some of the snakes, who may be very handleable most of the time, can become a little “snippy” as the heat and the stress of the fair wears on them. Volunteers should also be able to recognize signs of stress in all of the snakes and turtles we exhibit. A training session will be held the day before the fair when the animals are installed by Beth Girard and Jim Gerholdt.

MHS submitted a proposal to include a hands-on component this year, but a decision has been postponed pending the completion of the exhibit space. We will keep you posted, but it appears that this will not happen in 2013.

Rodent Order Rules Rodents may be ordered online at www.MnHerpSoc.com, by leaving a voicemail on the MHS phone line (612) 326-6516 or at the monthly meeting for the following month. However, MHS does not keep an inventory of rodents on hand. A group order is placed each month for the individual orders ALREADY PLACED. This is why the deadline for ordering is the Tuesday of the week prior to the meeting—to allow time for the rodents to be ordered and received from the supplier. This is a FIRM deadline. Please do not call Nancy at home after the deadline to place an order; there is simply no way for it to be filled. Thank you for your cooperation.

A letter from the RenFest Chairs

Dear friends of reptiles, We all know that there are many in society who think us bent. Horror from coworkers and family; friends who won’t enter certain rooms in your house. Reptile people are a little crazy, but then, so are many who keep pets.

Then there are the Festies. They are bent.

For seven weekends, they rise early, put on awkward costumes, and educate the horrified, terrified, and weirded out hordes. They do this in the sun. They do this in the rain. They have, on memorable inclement occasions, done it in the snow.

They endure stories of uncles killing garter snakes with hoes. They listen to hysterics about Burmese pythons invading the Everglades. They identify mystery snakes described as “long and brown.” They inform the masses how to move a turtle from the middle of the road. They correct those who mis-identify Smiley as a crocodile.

They march in parades. They scream back at those who scream. They scramble after sulcatas on missions. They decorate said sulcatas for their missions. They walk large constrictors on the grass. They drink mead. They ogle patrons.

They snark about costumes.

We are the few. The not-proud. The bent. We are Como Sapiens. Join us.

Chawna Schutte: Ozark Hellbender release work at the St. Louis Zoo. Chawna works in the herp department and is responsible for the entire hellbender project.

Toren Hill: The Burmese Pythons of Southern, Florida. A CIHS member, Toren just returned working on his masters project with both the American crocodile and Burmese python.

Dr Travis Wilcoxen: Amphibian Development and Disease. Travis is the former President of CIHS and an Assistant Professor at Millikin University.

Bob Bavirsha: Catching Crocodilians in Northern Illinois. Bob is a long time member of the Chicago Herpetological Society, he has been responsible for catching hundreds of released crocodilians.

Justin Michels: Herping in Southern, Illinois. Justin is one of the premier filed herpers in the United States.

Another topic: Illinois Alligator Snapping Turtle Release Program If you have never attended a Midwest Herpetological Symposium this is a 24/7 event! If you like socializing, listening to speakers, eating, going to a sale, or herping, this event has it all! Many of the top breeders, herpetoculturists, and herpetologists attend this meeting. The MHS Adoption Program is run as a benefit for the general membership. This past meeting was a great example of the unique animals that can appear any given month. Some of the more unusual animals adopted were a pair of red-footed tortoises, a breeding pair of Cape Gopher Snakes, two young bullsnakes (one snow and one albino), a breeding pair of Florida Kingsnakes, and a spotted python! Homes were also found for a large female red-eared slider, a leopard gecko and a bearded dragon.

Como Co age at the Minnesota Renaissance Fes val Hear Ye, Hear Ye‐The me is fast approaching for MHS’ seven week run at the Minnesota Renaissance Fes val.

Since the 80s MHS has had a presence educa ng and entertain‐ ing the patron of the fes val. First in partnership with Como Zoo, and then on our own when we replaced Como in the mid 90s’. MHS’ presence at MNRF allows us to reach thousands of people every year that we might not otherwise be able to inter‐ act with. In addi on to the huge educa onal opportuni es, those seven weekends are a significant source of dona ons for our organiza on.

The 2013 season of the Minnesota Renaissance Fes val runs weekends from August 17th to September 29thand also includes Labor Day and September 27th (Fes val Friday). We are required to staff the co age from opening gate at 9 am to closing cannon at 7pm each of the 16 days that the fes val is open. Needless to say, this huge commitment requires the help of many MHS members to make is successful. Each year we have a dedicated group of core volunteer that help us keep things running at the fes val, but we always need more help in order meet our staffing needs.

Volunteers are required to be in costume and to staff the ‘fence’ for two, two hour shi s each day, as well as walking in a short parade. When you aren’t working on fence, you are free to en‐ joy the rest of the Renaissance Fes val. See a stage show, browse the many shops or enjoy any of the many foods availa‐ ble at the fair. Or just find a comfortable spot and enjoy the people watching.

In addi on to the perk of free admission to the fes val, we will also feed you breakfast each morning that you volunteer. Sat‐ urday evenings are potluck night, when all of the volunteers gather to share a meal and relax a er a long day of educa ng the public. available through the day are also not unusual.

Volunteers are required to be in a period appropriate, peasant type costume at all mes while the fes val is open. You may wear your own, or we have limited supply at co age that you may borrow. We have everything but shoes available for loan, so you will need to show up with boots or sandals that will pass for the period.

Volunteers can come out for one day or all 16. We appreciate whatever me you want to give. We do need to know be the Wednesday prior to weekend that you want to work so that we can make sure that you are on the list at the gate to get in.
