The Minnesota Herpetological Society is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization. Membership is open to all individuals with an interest in amphibians and reptiles. The Minnesota Herpetological Society Newsletter is published monthly to provide its members with information concerning the society’s activities and a media for exchanging information, opinions and resources.

General Meetings are held at Borlaug Hall, Room 335 on the St. Paul Campus of the University of Minnesota, on the first Friday of each month (unless there is a holiday conflict). The meeting starts at 7:00pm and lasts about three hours. Please check the MHS Voice mail for changes in schedules or cancellations.

Protecting Amphibians and Reptiles under the Endangered Species Act. Collette Adkins Giese is a Reptile and Amphibian Senior Attorney at the Center for Biological Diversity, a national non-profit focused on protecting endangered species. She is dedicated to protecting rare amphibians and reptiles across the country. She received her law degree from the University of Minnesota, where she also earned a master’s degree in wildlife conservation. Before joining the Center, Collette was in private practice, where her pro bono legal work focused on preservation of endangered species and their habitats. She also served as a law clerk to the Honorable John R. Tunheim in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota

Jeff LeClere—Radio Telemetry of Bullsnakes and Plains Hog-nosed Snakes in Minnesota Submitted by Rebecca Markowitz Jeff LeClere is a dedicated, lifelong reptile and amphibian enthusiast who, amongst many other things, is the author and photographer of www.HerpNet.net, the chairman for the Amphibian and Reptile Subcommittee for the Iowa Wildlife Action Plan, and serves on the Amphibian and Reptile STAT team for the Minnesota Wildlife Action Plan. Jeff has also been a member of the Minnesota Herpetological Society since 1986! Jeff’s talk on Jan 3rd 2014 was about two separate subjects, Radio Telemetry of Bull snakes and Plains Hog-nosed Snakes in Minnesota, and "A Field Guide to the Amphibians and Reptiles of Iowa" the Journey of a Book.

Jeff works for the Minnesota Biology Survey (MBS) and his latest contribution was to monitor grassland snakes using radio telemetry. The snakes were also; weighed, measured, PIT tagged, and had tissue samples taken. For the survey four types of grassland snakes were being monitored; Bull Snakes, Plains Hog-nosed Snakes, Eastern Hog-nosed Snakes and the North American Racer.

mitter was used with varying signal ranges. Jeff did his research at two different locations, Weaver Dunes and Lac qui Parle WMA/Chippewa Prairie.

Amongst the Bull Snakes tagged at Weaver Dunes, there were a few of note, such as Marshy. Marshy spent a month in the marsh, earning him his name, as did two females in the area. Porchy (guess how she got her name), found a wonderful meal in a nest of turkey eggs, and quick Brushy caught himself a rabbit!

Unfortunately Brushy was not feeling well and by Oct 23rd when all the other tagged snakes were already in their burrows he was still basking trying to get over his upper respiratory infection. Though Brushy did eventually go into a burrow, he basked well into freezing temperatures, and with snow on the ground.

We’ll have to wait until the warmer seasons to see how Brushy has fared.

Jeff’s research at Lac Qui Parle/Chippewa Prairie was focused on the effects of Patch Burn Grazing on the local herpetofauna.

Pairs of sample plots were used to see how after the burns, the flora and fauna were affected by the grazing cattle. Four Plains Hog-nosed Snakes were tagged at this location and they showed an interesting similarity to Marshy, the Bull snake tagged at Weaver Dunes. Of the four snakes caught, three were female, and all of them spent significant time in the marsh. Two of the females spent three months in the marsh, which meant half of their active season was spent there.

With help from many people, including the illustrator for Jeff’s book, Mark Rouw, Jeff was able to overcome many obstacles, which included a death, and rewriting his book from a PDF, to finally complete his book! We’re all proud of him and thank him for being our January speaker!

Lessons learned: Some grassland snakes not only pass through marshes, they actually stay and hang out in them!

The second part of Jeff’s talk was about an incredible accomplishment of his, his book! Jeff is the proud author of “A Field Guide to the Amphibians and Reptiles of Iowa.” Jeff’s book is the first field guide on herps for the state of Iowa which boasts 67 species. Ten of these species are endangered, another nine are threatened, two are of special concern, and a whopping twenty-nine are species in greatest conservation need.

Jeff spent a fair amount of time with Dr. Christiansen of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, who was a mentor to Jeff and taught him a lot about field herping.

Dr. Christiansen was an old school, by the book kind of biologist who had plans to write a book on the herpetofauna of Iowa, but, he had no intentions of getting his book written any time soon. Joe Monahan, who helped Jeff create HerpNet.net in 1999, and Randy Blasus, his longtime MHS friend, convinced Jeff that he had enough data to write a book. Since Minnesota already had two good field guides already Jeff decided to write an Iowa book.

A Member’s Call to Action My name is Scott Nellis and I’ve been keeping and breeding boa, python and colubrid snakes since 1996. Unbeknownst to me, in September 2010 the city of Coon Rapids changed their “non-domestic” animal ordinance to now include the family of Boidae snakes (boas) as “non-domestic” animals and therefore illegal to keep. In October of 2011 the city raided my house on a tip from a neighbor. It goes without saying that this neighbor and I never got along very well, but that’s neither here nor there. I’ve been battling the city for over 2 years culminating in the denial of review from the MN Supreme court over the MN appeals court decision. That MN appeals court decision basically said they did not want to get involved in the affairs of the city and sided with them WITHOUT deciding anything. So, I’m back to square one. The city wants me to remove all prohibited snakes, which in my case is 47 various boas, some of which are rare and/or expensive. I do not have the means or facilities to do so and have been writing the city council to try and get the ordinance changed back to include Boidae snakes as “domestic” animals as it was prior to September 2010. I need the MHS membership’s help. We need to flood the Coon Rapids city council with e-mails and telephone calls to convince them that I’m not alone out here with my snakes. The ordinance in question is city code 6-502, non domestic animals, paragraph (2) (f) which prohibits and states (in part) “any snake, that is a member of the pit viper or Boidae family, including but not limited to……….South American anacondas, Asian reticulated pythons, boa constrictors, tree boas and sand boas.” Yes, even the small innocuous sand boa! Quite obviously, they did NOT do any research before passing the new ordinance and in fact merely copied the ordinance verbatim from Vadnais Heights city code! We need to educate the city council and sway them that Boidae snakes are NOT a threat to humans and have been kept as pets for well over 50 years.

OLD BUSINESS: T-Shirts: Only three styles will be offered at this time (regular t-shirt, ladies t-shirt, and a hoodie), but other styles can be offered if these sell well. A brief announcement will be included in the December newsletter letting people know to watch for them to be available soon.

Washington County Turtle-Crossing Project: Chris is looking for volunteers and funds. The group seems really serious about making progress. They will be submitting a grant request to MHS for $1500.00 in January. The money could be used to build additional feet of fencing to redirect the turtles or a nicer educational display. Our logo will be spread with this project, so there will be a direct benefit to .

State List of Threatened Amphibians and Reptiles: A new pamphlet is being done by Jeff LeClere.

NEW BUSINESS: Website Assistance: Kimber Anderson has offered to assist with the website. Chris and Nancy will make the introductions so she can help our current Web Administrator.

Scott Nellis – MHS Support: . He addressed the board concerning the proposed animal ordinances being discussed by the Coon Rapids City Council. Although this item was tabled by the Coon Rapids City Council, Scott feels they may be waiting for the outcome of his case before they proceed. He has thirty days to file a petition for review by the Minnesota Supreme Court. Scott has brought this issue to the Minnesota Herpetological Society because he feels we have an interest in the outcome of his case. He would like us to file to become a friend of the court in the eventuality that the Minnesota Court of Appeals decides to hear his case. He is also hopeful that our filing will increase his chance of his appeal being heard. Scott’s attorney believes if the Supreme Court agrees to review his case, there is a high probability of a positive outcome for him. Nancy Haig gave an historical perspective on the ways MHS has been involved with affecting change in the past and feels we need to form a legislative committee to help MHS stay on top of changes made at the city, county and state level concerning ordinances and laws that effect pet owners After much discussion, Beth moved that we file an amicus curriae (friend of the court) to the Minnesota Court of Appeals. This will allow us to speak later IF the Supreme Court decides to hear Scott’s case. It will cost MHS about one hundred dollars to do so. Ellen Heck seconded the motion and it carried.

Chris will work with Jake and Scott’s attorney to file the appropriate paperwork.

Ridgedale Petco: The store has an adoption fair once a month and they want to know if MHS is interested in having some of our animals there. Perhaps ball pythons and bearded dragons which we have a surplus of at present. MHS could at least do a hands-on at their adoption fairs to educate people about keeping reptiles as pets, and letting them know about MHS and how to adopt animals at meetings.

2014 MHS Budget: The 2014 Budget was discussed and changes were made to the proposed amounts. Ellen Heck motioned that we accept the 2014 Proposed Budget, Micole seconded it and it passed.

Ellen moved that we adjourn and Rebecca seconded. The meeting officially ended at 9:25pm.

Treasurer's Report for Dec 2013

Submitted by Nancy Haig What a wonderful way to start the New Year-all 16 new animals found homes, even the Slider(?) which turned out to be a Cooter. We had: 2 Leopard Geckos, a baby Red Eared Slider, 2 Red Foot Tortoises (baby & adult), a Slider(?), Cornsnake, Bullsnake, 2 Ball Pythons, 2 Common Boas ( 6' color morph and "Elizabeth"a very well fed 8') and 4 of the cutest juvenile Tiger Salamanders. We still have some animals in foster but right now they are being well cared for. Thanks to all who adopted our Hapless Herps!

Fosterparents- if you decided to keep the animal you've been fostering, just tell us. You do not need to bring the animal back to the meetings, especially when it's so cold. (Nancy Haig)

Adoption Year End Report 2013 Submitted by Nancy Haig It definitely was the Year of the Snake as far as Adoptions go.

We started out the year with 9 animals still in foster from 2012, then we took in 252 more animals during 2013. 99 of those were snakes, mainly Ball Pythons (27) and Cornsnakes (24). We had 17 Common Boas but no large Pythons (an artifact of the Lacey Act change?). We handled 60 Lizards, mainly Bearded Dragons (34) and Leopard Geckos (10) and only 6 Iguanas: 2 were adopted, 2 went to RICA, and 2 are still in foster. There was 1 alligator, 4 Tree-frogs and 1 Tiger Salamander.

Then there were the Turtles/Tortoises. We had 87 turtles- 41 Red Eared Sliders -most were sent to an out source facility.

There were 9 Sulcata Tortoises, 10 other Tortoises, 4 Snapping Turtles, 7 Box Turtles, the rest were native aquatic turtles and 2 African Side Neck turtles.

The numbers for 2013 : Intake 252; Adopted 191; placed outside MHS 41; Remaining in Foster 19; Died while in Special care 1. The 9 fosters from 2012 were also adopted.

81 individual members adopted animals this year, 43 took only 1 animal, 6 very enthusiastic members adopted a total of 52 animals. The number of intake animals is increasing each year: 166 in 2011; 220 in 2012; 252 in 2013 and it is the support of the membership that keeps this program going. White Snake Sale Is Coming up in April!

Hello, Everyone! It’s that time of year again when we begin preparations for the Annual White Snake Sale! The next White Snake Sale for 2014 will be held during the general meeting, on April 4th. This is one of our largest fund-raising events of the year, where a multitude of items are bid on and won by the membership. In going with tradition, there will be a silent auction with 2-3 rounds of bidding, as well as a live auction for some of our nicer items. So start saving up for nice high bids, and gather up some of your nice herp-related items to donate! We will not be accepting used glass aquariums again this year unless they are in excellent condition, and we will not accept more than a few. Please do not bring large heavy items to the event, instead please bring pictures with descriptions of the items. The winners of these larger items may make arrangements with you to pick them up after the auction. Photos and descriptions may be emailed in advance to newslettereditor@mnherpsoc.com.

We are also beginning to seek volunteers to help with the auction, which generally means helping out for up to a couple of hours over the course of the evening labeling items, putting them on tables or bringing them away after the auction rounds, some data entry, etc. Pizza and beverages are provided for volunteers, so there is incentive!! You are also given time to participate in the bidding, so no fear, you will not miss out on any items you may have your eye on.

With Scott Nellis’ petition for certiorari (MN Supreme Court review) being denied and US Ark challenging the ban on certain snakes, it is important that we fight for our rights to keep as pets the animals of our choice.
