Tim Lewis is a biologist at the University of St. Thomas in St Paul. He received his MSc and PhD in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He studies pond turtles in the Midwest. His long-term study of spotted turtles in Ohio spanned twenty years and that with wood turtles in Michigan has lasted 15 years. Currently with collaborators he is studying environmental chemical effects on painted turtles in Minnesota.

Tim will be speaking on the rise and fall of a spotted turtle (Clemmys guttata) population in southwestern Ohio .

Frank also saw the Emerald Lizard Lacerta viridis which are very variable in color and pattern (stripes or not) the males display bright blue under their throats in breeding season; Wall Lizards Podarcis muralis related to the Italian wall lizard which is considered invasive in the US; and the Copper Skink Ablepharus kitaibelii: similar to a small Prairie Skink. As well as the Viviparous Lizard Zootoca vivpara : the Sand Lizard Lacerta agilis, and the Glass Lizard Anguis fragilis which is actually a Slow Worm and legless.

Frank also saw the European Common Frog Rana temporuria the Green/Pool/Edible Frog complex Pelophylax ridibundus, lessonae and esculentus and the Common Toad Bufo bufo. Common Toads are found all over England, Austria and most of Europe. Green Frogs are also found all over Europe and have a large complex of interbred hybrids displaying wide variation in color and patterns. Frank described them as a Leopard Frog with a Mink Frog face.

The Agile Frog Rana dalmatina looks like a Wood Frog. It is an early breeder and found up to the arctic circle. The Moor Frog Rana arvalis is also found further east into Russia and Siberia. Operation Oac Oac (Romanian frog call) was a one man mission that had Frank climbing down a ladder into a cement drain pit and rescuing the frogs that were stranded.

The Carpathian Newt Lissotriton (Triturus) montandoni in the northern part of the country and Common Newts Lissotriton (Triturus) vulgaris along the mountains and limestone quarries.

While most male newts display large crests along their backs during breeding season, the Alpine Newt Mesotriton (Triturus) aplestris show bright belly colors and engage in tail waving to encourage the females to follow them.

Frank saw most of his snakes and turtles near the Danube Delta. The Grass snakes Natris natrix are similar to our garter snakes, highly variable in color and pattern and very smelly when they musk on you.

The European Pond Turtle Emys orbicularis is very like the Blandings Turtle in shape and color of the shell. The Smooth Snake Coronella austriaca, Caspian Whipsnake Dolichophis caspius and a Horned viper Vipera ammodytes were all seen during his work with Dan Kogalniceanu.

This was a beautiful introduction to the herps of Romania and Frank did a very entertaining presentation especially when describing his encounter with a venomous non-herp Centipede Scolopendra. Well done Some of the most spectacular photos were of the vari- Frank, Thank you.

Quarantine Suggestions (Editor’s Note—this was run last month as well, but we consider this to be such an important topic we are running it again) Miller, R.E. 1996. Quarantine protocols and preventive medicine procedures for reptiles, birds and mammals in zoos.

Rev. Sci. Tech 15(1): 183-189 QUARANTINE PERSONNEL Ideally, a keeper should be designated to care only for quarantined animals; otherwise, a keeper should attend quarantined animals only after fulfilling responsibilities for resident species. Equipment used to feed and clean animals in quarantine should be used only with these animals. If this is not possible, then equipment must be cleaned with an appropriate disinfectant (as designated by the veterinarian supervising quarantine) before use with post-quarantine animals. Institutions must take precautions to minimize the risk of exposure of animal handling personnel to zoonotic diseases which may be present in newly-acquired animals. These precautions should include the use of disinfectant footbaths, the wearing of appropriate protective clothing and masks (in some cases), and minimizing physical exposure in some species (e.g. with primates, by the use of chemical rather than physical restraint). A programme of tuberculin testing and surveillance must be established for zoo/aquarium employees, to ensure the health of both the employees and the animal collection.

QUARANTINE PROTOCOL During the quarantine period, certain prophylactic measures should be instituted. Individual faecal samples, or representative samples from large numbers of individuals housed in a limited area (e.g. birds of the same species in an aviary or frogs in a terrarium), should be collected, on at least two occasions, and examined for gastrointestinal parasites.

Treatment should be prescribed by the attending veterinarian. Ideally, release from quarantine should be dependent on obtaining two negative faecal results at a minimum interval of two weeks, either initially or after parasiticide treatment.

In addition, all animals should be evaluated for ectoparasites and should receive appropriate treatment, if necessary.

Vaccinations should be updated as appropriate for each species (1). If the animal arrives without a vaccination history, it should be treated as being immunologically naive and should be given an appropriate series of vaccinations. Whenever possible, blood should be collected and sera stored in a freezer (not frost-free) at either - 70ÅãC or - 20ÅãC. Such sera could provide an important resource for retrospective disease evaluation. The quarantine period also presents an opportunity to identify permanently all unmarked animals, when anaesthetized or restrained (e.g. tattoo, ear notch, ear tag).

Also, whenever animals are restrained or immobilized, a complete physical examination, including dental examination, should be performed. Complete medical records of all animals should be kept, and should be available for consultation during the quarantine period. Necropsy should be performed, under the supervision of a veterinarian, on all animals which die during quarantine; representative tissues should be submitted for histopathological examination.

QUARANTINE PROCEDURES Evaluation of faecal samples for parasites is required for each species. Ideally, at least two negative results should be obtained from samples taken with a minimum 14-day interval, although other protocols are necessary for some parasite infestations. As noted above, all appropriate vaccinations should be performed. Recommendations and suggestions for appropriate quarantine procedures for several animal groups are presented below.

This is extremely important. ALWAYS work with newly acquired animals last.

This is the first in a series of articles on hands-on rules, procedures and general advice. Many of our members volunteer for hands-on events. One requirement is that each year, we sign a waiver. This waiver contains the hands-on rules, which most people sign without reading first. This is unfortunate, as there are many important safety rules and tips contained there-in. So we will over the coming months visit these rules, complete with pictures and witty dialogue to illustrate.

This month the topic is transporting and containing the animals. At most hands-on events, space is limited.

People are bumping into each other, the tables and the containers of animals. It is therefore important that your animals are securely contained, both to prevent escape and to prevent injury, but also that their containers, while adequate in size, don’t take up exorbitant amounts of the limited space. Unless you are planning on displaying the animal in an enclosure that demonstrates its natural habitat, you should not bring it. It is also unsafe to transport your animal loose in an enclosure—if someone runs into your vehicle, your animal is unprotected inside such an enclosure and may be injured, possibly by the hiding spot, water dish and/or cage ornaments that are in there with them.

There are of course exceptions to this. Obviously, amphibians require a container with some sort of moist substrate. However, a small container rather than its usual cage can be used for transport and display. The smaller the container, the less likely the animal is to be bounced and tossed around and injured.

Animals should be individually bagged/contained for transport. This provides them a safe, snug hiding spot that not only prevents escape but will provide added protection if something catastrophic occurs on the trip.

Several bags/containers can then be put into a HARD-SIDED, lidded container. Sterilite bins work VERY well for this. They provide both protection and a secondary level of containment. Obviously, if you are bringing a 12’ Burmese python and a 5’ cornsnake, you may want to consider separate hard containers. Or at least put the cornsnake on top and make sure it stays there!

Below is a demonstration of how to correctly tie a bag. This is not quite the no-brainer it would appear—I once had a snake get out of its bag on the trip home and crawl into the engine block of my car because the person I had let hold it did not do an adequate job tying the bag. Fortunately she came back out on her own so I avoided a very complicated explanation to a mechanic.

This bag has been incorrectly tied. A determined snake can very easily wiggle out of this sort of knot, particularly if it is bored and has nothing else to do. This is how someone tied the bag of a snake they had borrowed, which nearly turned out to be disastrous.

1. To simply tie a knot in the bag, whether a snake bag or pillowcase, first pinch off as much of the bag as possible. This is to keep the snake out of the knot as you tie it.

2. Twist the neck of the bag (this makes it easier to tie) while keeping the bag firmly pinched so the snake can’t get in the way.

4. Tie the knot firmly so that the snake cannot get into it. Having to work the knot loose later is still better than a loose snake.

5. Ready for transport. Yes, I emphasized keeping the bag pinched but you don’t want to tie your snake in a knot.

3. It is important while tying the knot that you keep one hand pinching the neck of the bag closed. It takes practice but is much safer for your snake.

Applying the Scientific Method to Education Recently, one of our younger members, Zippa Curiskis, asked the question “Does a hands-on classroom experience with snakes change the attitudes or opinions of 5th grade students about snakes?” She then proceeded to answer that question, not with the spurious speculation that is all too common in the modern media, but with scientific analysis and hard proof.

Altogether it is an impressive example of how to conduct and write-up an experiment. Well done Zippa!

Minneapolis Considers Lifting Reptile Ban The City of Minneapolis has a long-standing ban on the keeping of any type of reptile.

Even the MHS has to get an annual permit to attend hands-on events held in the city, such as the Pet Expo and any school events, as well as parades done with the Minnesota Renaissance Festival.

However, this may soon change. MHS has been working in conjunction with Minneapolis Animal Control to draft a new set of regulations for reptiles. The working draft has been accepted and will probably be put to the city council later this year for approval.

If passed, it will hopefully pave the way for other cities, which currently ban all reptiles across the board, to review and update their policies. We will keep you posted!

2015 BASE CAMP COORDINATOR NEEDED for MHS ANNUAL FIELD SURVEY MHS has a long tradition of herpetological research by hosting annual field surveys. The first one, in fact, was held in 1984 in cooperation with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. That year, 17 surveyors participated over a three-month period. Beginning in 2001, the surveys became more of a weekendlong coordinated event and became “MHS sanctioned events, completely set up, run, and reported on by and for the general membership.” This also meant that “MHS had an annual budget for the survey every year.” The location of the 2015 survey will not be known until this spring, but every location offers unique opportunities for herping!

Jeff LeClere serves as the Field Survey Coordinator, and he works with the Base Camp Coordinator to create a well-run event.

The Base Camp Coordinator(s) is responsible for … ·

Planning five meals (Friday dinner, three meals on Saturday, and breakfast and lunch on Sunday);

·

Purchasing the food and preparing the food for the five meals (or arranging to have it done!);

·

Serving as the Camp Host (helping surveyors find their campsites and being prepared with MHS provided supplies, such as bug spray, first aid kit, etc.);

·

Tracking volunteer hours and turning them in to the Field Survey Coordinator after the survey;

·

Setting up base camp Friday afternoon (having directional signs in place);

·

Breaking down base camp Sunday afternoon (removing directional signs and making sure the campsite/s are left in proper order);

·

Inventorying and packing up the MHS supplies for the following years’ survey.

In 2014, my husband and I served as Base Camp Coordinators. We were able to participate in the surveys and get to know the participants well. Due to a family commitment, we are unable to do so again this year. I am available until June 1st, however, to offer assistance to the 2015 Coordinator. Are you an experienced keeper of a particular type of herp? Are you willing and able to provide answers to others? We are looking to re-introduce the herp assistance program and need people willing to offer advice for all types of reptiles and amphibians. We are also looking for people who specialize in breeding (herps, that is) cage building, or any other aspect of keeping herps.

We are looking for 2-3 members who are willing to locate three potential sites for each of our events this year: the annual picnic in June and the holiday banquet in December. This work will take approximately 1012 hours over the next two months. Committee members will work with past chairs persons and the board to establish a list of questions to ask venues and outline what our needs are for a venue. The committee will find up to three venues that meet our needs and presented the documented information to the board for the March meeting. Committee members who wish to continue on and help to plan the events will be welcome to do so, but it is not a requirement.
