WRITING YOUR MEMOIR: INSPIRATION FROM NATURE (100-07-25-15) Saturday, July 25, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Jeannie Hanson, published nature and science writer, writing coach Whether you’ve already started a memoir or plan to write one someday, this class will launch you into creative remembering and writing using sensory experiences in nature as prompts. We’ll stroll to two of the Arboretum’s nearby gardens to use sound, sight, touch, smell and taste as springboards into personal memories of nature, Walk Stoneburner (Flickr) then use the garden as our writing “studio.” Reading aloud may follow the writing session. WRITING AN ABC PLANT BOOK FOR GROWN-UPS (100-07-18-15) Saturday, July 18, 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Jeannie Hanson, published nature and science writer, writing coach Begin the process of creating a botanical “abecedary,” an ancient form of writing often used by children learning their ABCs. Learn about this time-honored literary and fine-art format, then explore how you can adapt it for your own creative writing. The class will begin by exploring the Arboretum’s exhibit, K Is for Kiss Me Over the Garden Gate, featuring beautiful botanical images curated from Andersen Horticultural Library’s collection. Next, you’ll choose an image for each letter to include in your own abecedary; copies of the exhibit’s images will be available for you to use, or bring your own to class. In the final step, you’ll write a short piece about your connection to the images – and be well on your way to completing a beautiful, personalized abecedary! Learn about the birds that are just passing through and those who are coming to stay for the summer. Discover the ephemeral flowers of spring. Our technology-loaded lives can leave anyone eager to dig into nature and get their hands on plants. Studio activities, led by trained volunteers, will feature specific plants, and take-homes for participants.
