When bundled together, all four classes will give you the foundation of skills and understanding to take your gardening to the next level! The classes will make sense of the sometimes daunting college-level science of plants, making lessons accessible to all skill levels. You will discover how to create the edible landscape with a variety of plants, from the traditional to the unusual. Instructor Emily Tepe believes it’s unfair that tomatoes, kale and their savory companions are so often relegated to a hidden corner of the garden. And she advocates for a glorious blending of fruit bearing plants with vegetables, and doesn’t want plants jammed into stick-straight rows. The Prairie Garden: To Explore and to Bring Home (150-08-03-13) Saturday, August 3, 2013, 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Learning Center Julia Bohnen, acclaimed horticulturist who was instrumental in the creation of the Arboretum’s Spring Peeper Meadow Restoration Enter a part of the Minnesota landscape’s past and learn how to bring a little of it into your own landscape with renowned horticulturist Julia Bohnen. You’ll first learn which native species work well for her garden and how to use them as features of your own garden. Then head out to The Bennett-Johnson Prairie where you’ll see plants which existed on the tall grass prairies of central Minnesota before the days of settlement. This south-facing slope contains many plants including Indian grass, big and little bluestem, goldenrod, heliopsis, asters and golden Alexander, and more. What attracts pollinators to flowers? Zoom inside a flower like a bee, using our microscope to find out! Explore our make believe pantry to see foods produced by insect pollinated plants. Find out how you can help the pollinators in your own back yard. FREE with Arboretum Admission

Help prepare a garden fresh bite of colorful vegetables and fresh herbs. Discover how putting a rainbow of plants on your plate fuels your body. Mix paints to match the exact pigment of heirloom tomatoes, squash, pumpkins, and many more colorful edibles fresh from the garden. FREE with Arboretum Admission
November – Prehistoric Plants Saturdays and Sundays in November, 2013 noon - 4 p.m. • Learning Center
What kind of foliage did plant eating dinosaurs munch on? Stop by the Learning Center to meet some living fossils, prehistoric plants from the days of the Diplodocus. Look at spores and cones up close with a microscope. Create your own fern print on cotton cloth, hunt for prehistoric plants in the greenhouse, and plant a prehistoric plant to take home with you. Have you heard the buzz about bees? Discover who lives in a hive, and what jobs they do. Take a look at pollen up close and buzz through the greenhouse in search of flowers. Sample a taste of sweet comb honey and sooth winter’s chapped lips by making your own beeswax lip balm to take home. FREE with Arboretum Admission
January – Cozy up to a Cactus Saturdays and Sundays in January, 2014, noon - 4 p.m. • Learning Center
Escape from winter for a desert adventure in our warm greenhouse. See the spikes, spines, and inside of a cactus larger than life through a microscope. Munch on edible cactus and savor sweet agave syrup while you invent a survival adaptation. Before you go, pot up your own succulent plant to keep on your windowsill all winter long. February – Plant Partnerships Saturdays and Sundays in February, 2014, noon - 4 p.m. • Learning Center
How do animals survive the winter? Fly south like the migrant birds and monarch butterflies into our tropical greenhouse. Hunt for tropical flowers and fruit that help replenish these weary migrants. Create a natural seed ornament to feed the hardy nonmigrants outside your window. Peer through a microscope at the colorful berries, twigs, and needles in our winter landscape that sustain winter wildlife. FREE with Arboretum Admission
March – Sprouts Alive! In the plant word it is time to begin! How do seeds turn into sprouts? Let’s look in a microscope at shoots with baby leaves and roots. Prepare a sprout snack in the Harvest Kitchen, design seed pictures, and plant seeds to take home and watch as they sprout and grow. FREE with Arboretum Admission
