Grow. Restore. CHILDREN’S GARDEN The Children’s Garden is THE place for hands-on discovery, creativity, growing adventures, and nature fun. It’s a place where kids get to taste their accomplishments, use their imaginations, and build friendships while tending a kid-sized plot of flowers and vegetables throughout the summer. All participants are invited to an evening garden celebration on Wednesday, August 15, 6-8 p.m. Fee includes snack, project supplies, Children’s Garden t-shirt, and cookbook. These one-, two- and three-day camps provide a variety of ways to experience the wonders of the Arboretum. Our camps offer an engaging mix of hands-on plants, science adventure, imagination, art, food and exploring for ages 4-14. Food is as organic and local as possible. All classes take place at the Marion Andrus Learning Center. FOR FAMILIES - LET’S COOK TOGETHER!
NEW! We’ve listened to your feedback and are happy to now offer smaller class sizes and multiple dates and age groups for our popular family cooking classes. Families with younger kids make lunch together, with a focus on safety and fun in the kitchen at a pace perfect for small hands and short attention spans. Families with older children make an early supper together, with the ability to focus on more advanced cooking techniques at a more age-appropriate pace. Families who wish to bring two or more children that cross the age group distinctions are encouraged to simply make a choice that best fits their family.

JUNE 15: PLANT PORTRAITS—OBSERVATIONAL DRAWING (993-06-15-12) Practice observing carefully to increase realism in pencil drawings. Explore colored pencil techniques to create depth and a feeling of aliveness. Taught by artist Gretchen Wagener. JUNE 29: IMPRESSIONIST GARDEN PAINTING (993-06-29-12) Using the Arboretum as inspiration, and with artist Gretchen Wagener as a guide, create an impressionist-style painting. Learn how to mix and blend colors for desired effects. JULY 13: CLAY SCULPTURE (993-07-13-12) Walk the Arboretum grounds and sketch inspiring plants or wildlife. Then use your sketches to guide your creation of a clay sculpture. Taught by artist Gretchen Wagener. JULY 27: BASKET WEAVING (993-07-27-12) Weave bamboo reeds into a basket with the help of experienced basketry teacher Nancy Nelson. Take home additional reed material for a future creation! GUIDED ADVENTURES Guided Adventures are perfect for daycare, scout, summer school or neighborhood groups wanting extra hands-on fun during an Arboretum visit. Each Guided Adventure lasts one hour, and can accommodate groups of 1050 children. Complete details are available online at www.arboretum.umn. edu/fieldtrips.aspx. Dirt Detectives ages 3-5 Roll up your sleeves and unearth some of the mystery of dynamic dirt. Plant seeds and experiment to discover what plants need to grow. Venture outside to the Children’s Garden and look for clues to find out how dirt is made.
Butterflies and Hummingbirds ages 6-12 What would it be like to taste with your feet or fly upside down? Discover the amazing lives of butterflies and hummingbirds, our most colorful garden visitors. Learn how fast a hummingbird flaps its wings, how a caterpillar changes into a butterfly, and which flowers these winged creatures prefer. Pot a plant to attract hummingbirds and butterflies to your garden at home.

KNOT IN THE KITCHEN: PRETZELS! - APRIL Turn that crank, twist that dough-into the oven and out for a flavor-filled homemade snack! While your pretzel is baking, find out about Minnesota’s grain growing and milling history. Use pond scoops and binoculars to survey what plants and animals live here now. Help monitor Arboretum scientists’ work to bring nature back in a former cornfield. Participants will need to drive to wetland during field trip.
