HOUSE HUNTING FOR POLLINATORS Saturdays and Sundays June - September, Drop-in between 12:30 p.m. - 3 p.m. Make a hollow stem home-starter to hang up, find out what bare soil is best for native ground dwelling bees, and get ideas for what you can do to make pollinators welcome in your neighborhood. Bee Center

Pairs of gardeners will tend kid-sized plots of vegetables and flowers throughout the summer! Plant, water, harvest, investigate, taste-test, explore, participate in scientific discovery, learn the value of teamwork, and marvel at the delicious treats we create in the kitchen!

Non-participating siblings are welcome to attend at no charge if they are not a distraction to the group. LET’S GROW SUNFLOWERS TOGETHER! Saturday, June 9, 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. Get a closer look at sunflowers with microscopes, and learn about sunflower diversity and heliotropism- how sunflowers grow to face the sun! Plant your favorite kind of sunflower to grow at home, make sunflower snacks for backyard creatures, and sunflower snacks for you! Limit 12 adult+child projects, Learning Center LET’S HELP BUTTERFLIES TOGETHER! Saturday, July 14, 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. Learn what plants and flowers are important for Minnesota butterflies, and get an amazing up-close look with microscopes. Pot up plants to help caterpillars and butterflies in your backyard, and meet some caterpillars! Search for butterflies and make a butterfly feeder to hang in your garden! Limit 12 adult+child projects, Learning Center LET’S COOK TOGETHER! Saturday, August 4, 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. Plant some wheat to take home and grow, then try your hand at grinding wheat into flour. Make your own pizza dough, and add fresh healthy veggie toppings. While the pizza bakes, you will have a chance to investigate herbs and make a seed art picture with grains. Limit 12 adult+child projects, Learning Center LET’S BUILD TOGETHER! Saturday, September 15, 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Build miniature “gnome homes” and create creatures from pinecones. Make a tiny table complete with an acorn tea set. Play a plant parts matching game and spend some microscope time zooming in on tree seeds, leaves, bark and wood. INSECT SAFARI Monday - Thursday, August 13 - 16, 9 a.m. - noon Special Guests: Como Park Zoo Investigate insects’ unique adaptations, fascinating life-cycle transformations, and the wildly different ways they have to see, smell, hear, and communicate. Become a bug detective with exotic, live specimens from Como Zoo. Suit up like a beekeeper to look inside a honey bee hive and build bugfriendly habitats to attract and house insect visitors.

STEM STUDIO Choose a session Monday - Thursday, June 25 - 28, 9 a.m. - noon Monday - Thursday, August 6 - 9, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Investigations and innovations abound as the dynamic subjects of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) are used to inspire curiosity and new discoveries. Develop problem-solving skills using LEGO™ bricks, microscopes and other materials to conduct experiments. Team up to design, create, test, and refine solutions to engineering challenges like “the Animal Shelter,” “the Balance” and “the Mystery Box.”

BUG HUNTERS AND DIRT DETECTIVES Monday - Thursday, August 13 - 16, 9 a.m. - noon Special Guest: Exotic insects from Como Park Zoo Creepy crawlies are some of the coolest creatures around! Discover why these critters play an important role in the ecosystem and where the best places are to observe these animals in action. GARDEN HARVEST HOOPLA Monday - Thursday, August 20 - 23, 9 a.m. - noon Collect herbs, vegetables and flowers, then use the harvested goodies to mix up tasty snacks and create works of art. Use science principles to inspect the insides of fruits and vegetables and bring home some beauty from the garden to share with family.

ARBORETUM EXPEDITION FOR ADVENTURE! Choose a session Monday - Thursday, July 23 - 26, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Monday - Thursday, July 30 - August 2, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Learn paddling basics by venturing to the Arboretum’s newly-opened Lake Tamarack site for canoeing and exploration of its many diverse ecosystems. Have a blast biking with new friends to the life-guarded Lake Minnewashta Beach for swimming and a watershed study. Create solar ovens and learn survival skills with additional games and activities that encourage teamwork, safety, and a sense of accomplishment.

MAGIC SCHOOL BUS ARBORETUM ADVENTURE Choose a session Monday - Thursday, July 23 - 26, 9 a.m. - noon Monday - Thursday, July 30 - August 2, 9 a.m. - noon Based on the celebrated book series, “The Magic School Bus,” favorite kid activities like puppet shows, songs, and mud play are coupled with the use of binoculars, microscopes and magnifying glasses to look closer at scientific concepts and connections in the natural world.

ECO SPY ACADEMY Choose a session Monday - Thursday, July 23 - 26, 9 a.m. - noon Monday - Thursday, July 30 - August 2, 9 a.m. - noon * * TOP SECRET * * Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to work undercover to develop skills of stealth, awareness and survival. Receive top-secret instruction, a secret agent name, and mysteries to solve. Conduct experiments and investigations in chromatography, forensics and code-breaking. Team up with other secret agents to hunt for clues that will reveal some of the Arboretum’s hidden wonders.

TIP: Combine a morning camp with a corresponding afternoon camp for a full-day bundle! Includes an extra lunch

CREATION STATION Choose a session Monday - Thursday, June 25 - 28, 9 a.m. - noon Monday - Thursday, August 6 - 9, 9 a.m. - noon Discover how unusual art-project materials such as spray bottles, twigs and antacid tabs can be used to design unique works of art. Play with color by concocting fizzy mixtures, chalkboard slime, and a DIY lava lamp. WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE Choose a session Monday - Thursday, July 9 - 12, 9 a.m. - noon Monday - Thursday, July 16 - 19, 9 a.m. - noon Special Guest: Live birds from University of Minnesota Raptor Center Let the Wild Rumpus start! Explore the Arboretum’s wonder-filled hidden places while searching for wild things high and low. Crafts, cooking, games, hikes, dancing, wallowing in squishy mud, and experience an up-close encounter with real wild things from the UofM’s Raptor Center!

PAPER, PAINT & PLANTS: NATURE ARTS AND CRAFTS Monday - Thursday, July 16 - July 19, 9 a.m. - noon Bring science and nature together by using harvested plants and bits of nature to make petal paint and seed paper. Take home a plant in an unusual container, investigate unique leaf shapes and create prints using sun-reactive dye! Create colorful mosaic designs, origami animals, and more.

Sculpt with mud, design a nature-inspired wind chime, play with watercolors and use sunlight in imaginative ways!

Each one-day camp $30 members/$35 non-members, includes Arboretum admission, a snack, and any project supplies (Please bring your own lunch). Limit 16. ARTS AND CRAFTS-TRASH TO TREASURE Friday, June 22, 9 a.m. - noon Let trash inspire your imagination! Explore your creative side with a full morning of arts and crafts activities seeing things people normally throw away in new and surprising ways. THE BUZZ ABOUT BEES Friday, June 29, 9 a.m. - noon Go on a pollinator safari to learn about the incredible diversity of bees that call Minnesota home. Observe bee behavior, taste test honey, and put on a beekeeping suit to get an up-close look inside a working honey bee hive. FORT BUILDING Friday, July 13, 9 a.m. - noon Become a master fort builder this summer! Using sticks, rope and other natural material, campers will work together to construct oneof-a-kind shelters for a morning of imaginative outdoor play! MUD! Friday, July 20, 9 a.m. - noon Explore, play, jump and squish in mud, glorious mud! Create mud crafts, search for critters that live in the mud and eat a “dirt” cup snack. Parents, don’t worry! Kids are 100% washable, and will be sprinkler-washed before being returned to you.

GIFTS FROM THE HONEY BEE HIVE Friday, July 27, 9 a.m. - noon Explore the extraordinary life of a honey bee colony and how it creates honey, beeswax, and other treasures. Make your own beeswax products and honey treats! CSI ARBORETUM Friday, August 3, 9 a.m. - noon Put your detective skills to work solving uniquely Arboretum-themed “whodunits.” Use forensic tools and techniques, teamwork, and real plant science to unlock clues and unravel mysteries. BUTTERFLY BONANZA Friday, August 10, 9 a.m. - noon Search for eggs, caterpillars, chrysalises, and butterflies! Use magnifiers and microscopes to look at them up close, create uniquely butterfly-themed crafts. SUMMER’S GREATEST HITS Friday, August 17, 9 a.m. - noon Come for an action-packed day filled with crafts, games, science experiments, adventures and fun camp-tacular surprises!
