The kettle will be on and the discussion will be rich during this book-club structured series with award winning author Toni McNaron, University of Minnesota professor emerita of English. You will come to the session having read the month’s selection and learn more about the context of and the authors who have created stories centered around the deep and abiding power gardens and gardening have in our lives. A sampling of the literature includes “Gardens in the Dunes” by Leslie Marmon Silko, “Rappacini’s Daughter” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, “Kew Gardens” by Virginia Woolf, and “Quite a Year for Plums” by Bailey White. You will receive a reading list prior to the first meeting.
FOOD AS METAPHOR: WRITING INSPIRATIONS FROM FOOD | 100-03-10-11 Thursdays, March 10, 17, and 24, 6:30-9:00 p.m. $80 member/$90 non-member, All Levels, Hands-On / Demo, Limit 30, Learning Center Like cooking, writing is the process of pulling together the raw ingredients with inspiration and motivation to create a finished work of art. Food and rituals associated with it bring powerful emotions and can inspire strong writing. Published writer and educator Jules Nyquist, whose latest poetry chapbook is “Appetites: Poems on Food, Drink, Sex” (2010) will show you how to use food as a metaphor through writing exercises that will draw upon cultural images toward food, food rituals and preparation, gender, politics, body image, and hunger. You will read literature selections about gastronomy and art, food in poetry and food in fiction and character development.
THURSDAY NIGHT WITH THE ARTIST: STEVE TOBIN | 100-04-14-11 Thursday, April 14, 7:30-9 p.m. $20 member/$30 non-member, All Levels, Lecture, Limit 200, Oswald Visitor Center Artist Steve Tobin describes his exhibit Steelroots as “a fusion of art and nature.” The exhibit at the Arboretum is only the second appearance of the series worldwide and the first in Minnesota. During this exclusive evening, Tobin will discuss his journey as an artist influenced by nature and how he draws from natural forms to create exquisite sculptures in glass, clay, bronze and steel. You will learn more about each particular piece--some of which soar up to 40 feet or weight as much as 20,000 pounds--and about the artist’s intention in selecting each setting. There will be time for questions with the artist, lending a deeper appreciation for this unique exhibition and allowing you to share in the artist’s reverence for nature. Seating and cash bar opens at 6:30 p.m.

This year, participants will paint on location at three distinct settings at the Arboretum: Green Heron Pond, Bennett/Johnson Prairie, and the orchards and vineyards at the Horticultural Research Center. Improve your skills—or learn new ones!—as you learn more about the plants and animals that inhabit the Arboretum. As life returns to Green Heron Pond, artist-teacher Sandra Muzzy will help you make a personal record of spring unfolding. Sandra will show easy-to-manage techniques in watercolor, ink, colored pencils, markers, mono-printing, and collage as you develop your own style. She will also discuss book binding options. Classes will start in the Learning Center, proceed to the bog. Sandra is an award-winning watercolorist and popular teacher who has exhibited widely in the Twin Cities, including at the Arboretum. Experience is helpful but not required. A supplies list will be sent to you when you register. Dress for painting on location outdoors. Note that this class will require walking to painting sites. Trails around the pond are flat, but they are not paved and may be muddy. Inclement weather back-up: Class will take place in the Learning Center.
SPRING PLEIN-AIR WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP: GREEN HERON POND | 100-05-21-11 Saturday, May 21, 9:45 a.m.-1:00 p.m. $40 member/$50 non-member, Beginner-Intermediate, Hands-On / Demo, Limit 15, Snyder Building Lobby By mid-May, Green Heron Pond should be teeming with life. Watercolorist Georgia Kandiko will help you focus on a specific plant or animal to create accurate and personal images of a pond denizen. You will start with a quick value study and then learn more techniques–e.g., direct and negative painting, mixing colors on the paper, and glazing. Georgia Kandiko has a wide following as an artist-teacher and was one of the exhibitors in 2010’s Powerhouse Plants at the Arboretum. Some painting experience is recommended. Learn from an expert and gain insight into which trees and shrubs are best for your garden and yard. Take a hike into the gardens to see examples of Arboretum selections that will work in your setting.
HORTICULTURE Fine-tune your plant knowledge or learn a new gardening skill from expert instructors. The instructors are Arboretum staff, University of Minnesota scientists, and other invited guest speakers. The Arboretum gardens serve as classrooms and laboratories which make the classes especially unique. GROW YOUR OWN FOOD | 500-02-19-11 Saturday, February 19, 10 a.m.-Noon $30 member/$40 non-member, All Levels, Lecture, Limit 100, Snyder Auditorium Whether you have a postage-stamp sized urban lot or spacious farmyard, you can grow an abundance of your own food. Learn about some of the best choices for your vegetable garden from lifetime gardener and Arboretum Director of Education Tim Kenny. For a variety to become one of his favorites it must be easy to grow, harvest, and prepare in the kitchen. Selections must be relatively insect and disease free and promise fabulous flavor. By the end of the class, you’ll have a list of favorites, know where to purchase them, how to grow them, and have easy-to-make recipes featuring the selections. Class is lecture style with plenty of photographs, recollections, opinions, and seed catalog references. Suitable for beginner to advanced gardeners.

This may sound impossible, but it’s true. The climate controlled environment in our Minnesota homes is just what orchid plants need to grow and bloom year after year. Orchid grower and expert Jerry Fischer will present the tips and techniques you need to be a successful home orchid grower including light and water requirements, temperature needs, insect and disease management, selecting plants for purchase, and which varieties are your best bet for success. Get started growing orchids right away with a take-home seedling sized orchid plant from this class.

Taste wines and learn how to evaluate and identify the many nuances of wine flavors and fragrances with University of Minnesota’s oenologist Katie Cook.

Award winning photographer Molly Steinwald will share her techniques and views of how photographs can connect the viewer to nature and increase sensitivity for the environment through lecture-style photo-presentations and a panel discussion with other leading photographers. Stay for the day to explore the Arboretum through your camera. Lunch is included. With the Arboretum as your inspiration and your laboratory, learn tips and techniques from renowned photographers. Participation in the photography workshop includes an invitation to participate in the Student Fine Art and Photography Exhibit and Sale on December 4 & 5, 2011 each day in the MacMillan Auditorium. Unique to the Arboretum, this holiday-season sale features greeting cards, prints, framed and unframed originals, and other art and gift items by 2011 Arboretum workshop participants. WALKS FOR THE CURIOUS 2011 Spend some time on Saturday mornings and during special tribute days with a leading Arboretum expert to discover what is unfurling and blooming and which creatures are coming and going in favorite and special places throughout more than a thousand acres at the Arboretum. Enroll in several of these “classes on the move” to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the seasonal changes in this unique setting. Instructors include acclaimed landscape gardener Richard Gjertson and wildlife expert Matt Schuth. Bring your binoculars and a willingness to savor the wonders of the flora and fauna. Then sample the bounty from orchards and gardens to contrast and compare different apples, fine wines, or warming teas along with lively conversation.
