YOUR LIFE WITH NATURE and Fun in Learning at the Arboretum PEA PODS FOR PRESCHOOLERS Pea Pods for Preschoolers provides the opportunity for you and your special little one to experience the enchantment of the plant world. Positive interactions with nature are an important part of healthy child development and enhance learning and quality of life through adulthood. Developing this wonder in the early years focuses primarily on young children exploring and enjoying the world of nature with the companionship of caring adults. The program is created around weekly themes and stations designed with the young learner in mind. At your own pace, you and your “Pea Pod” explore planting, art, sensory and science discovery, action, music, story time, snack, garden, and outdoor/greenhouse adventures. Come play and learn about nature! Pea Pods registration is by seasonal series of 10 weekly classes that are offered Fall, Winter/ Spring and Summer. You can register for one or all of the series to enjoy this special time together through the whole cycle of seasons at the Arboretum. SUMMER DAY CAMPS FOR FAMILIES (AN ADULT + KIDS WHO ARE ENTERING K – 8TH GRADE GRADS) LET’S COOK TOGETHER! Explore tastes, textures, & seasonal recipes while you create a delicious and nutritious meal. A great opportunity to bond with a young person in your life and/or expand the palate of a picky eater. We focus on ways to make vegetables and whole grains easy and delicious. (Food is as organic and local as possible.)

NEW! We’ve listened to your feedback and divided our family cooking classes into two age groups. Families with younger kids can now come in the morning and make lunch together, with a focus on safety and fun in the kitchen at a pace perfect for small hands and short attention spans. Families with older children can now join us in the afternoon to make an early supper together, with the ability to focus on more advanced cooking techniques at a more age-appropriate pace. Families who wish to bring two or more children that cross the age group distinctions are encouraged to simply make a choice that best fits their family. SALAD MANIA! JULY 8: SCULPTING NATURE | 993-07-08-11 Build magical sculptures from found natural materials. Use woodworking tools like hand saws and cordless drills; learn quick, clever ways of joining your materials. Taught by Willis Bowman, who is an engineer, puppeteer, and co-designer and builder of the Arboretum’s “Under the Oak” nature play area. JULY 22: GARDEN PAINTING | 993-07-22-11 Use the Arboretum as inspiration to create a painting based on observation. Learn how to mix and blend colors for desired effects. AUGUST 5: INTRO TO PRINTMAKING | 993-08-05-11 Use insulation foam and safe carving tools to create a printing plate that easily makes colorful prints. Learn various carving techniques to show textures, backgrounds, and focal points. AUGUST 19: CLAY SCULPTURE | 993-08-19-11 Walk the Arboretum grounds and sketch inspiring plants or wildlife. Then use your sketches to guide your creation of a clay sculpture. Explore shape, texture, and proportion.

Use woodworking tools like hand saws and cordless drills; learn quick, clever ways of joining your materials. Taught by Willis Bowman, who is an engineer, puppeteer, and co-designer and builder of the Arboretum’s “Under the Oak” nature play area. JULY 22: GARDEN PAINTING | 998-07-22-11 Use the Arboretum as inspiration to create a painting based on observation. Learn how to mix and blend colors for desired effects. AUGUST 5: INTRO TO PRINTMAKING | 998-08-05-11 Use insulation foam and safe carving tools to create a printing plate that easily makes colorful prints. Learn various carving techniques to show textures, backgrounds, and focal points. AUGUST 19: CLAY SCULPTURE | 998-08-19-11 Walk the Arboretum grounds and sketch inspiring plants or wildlife. Then use your sketches to guide your creation of a clay sculpture. Explore shape, texture, and proportion.

Try your hand at making a tiny hummingbird nest out of moss, bark, and dry grass then peek inside nectar filled flowers with microscopes.
