That rare opportunity highlights this class examining botanical illustration. Josephine’s interest in plants germinated while growing up in the Caribbean and culminated in her sending out explorers to obtain plants from around the world for her garden in France. Her desire to document her garden for posterity led to her patronage of one of the finest botanical illustrators of all time, Pierre Joseph Redouté. Learn about Josephine’s garden and see for yourself Redouté’s exquisite work in rare books published more than 200 years ago. Kathy Allen, head of Andersen Horticultural Library, will tell the story and turn the pages of these special volumes.

There will be drop spindles and material for everyone. You will receive clean uncarded fiber dyed with plants from the Arboretum. Bring any other fibers you wish to spin. With all the lovely yarn you will be spinning, you’re welcome to bring knitting needles. Fiber artist Kim Christensen uses stems, flowers and berries to dye her woolen wares right in her backyard.
