What made autumn so delightful to him was the harvest of grapes to make wine. The concerto includes the cleverest depiction of drunkenness ever conceived in a musical score (and also the effects of drunken sleep). With acclaimed musicologist and pianist Daniel Freeman, Ph.D, you will explore how Vivaldi evokes a fox-hunting scene—the subject of the final movement. The class will also include selected examples of music by Romantic-era composers that evoke aspects of the autumn season in the garden and countryside.

MUSIC
It is difficult to imagine today how novel it was for city dwellers 200 years ago—before trains, automobiles, or television—to undertake an outing to the countryside. Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 of 1808, designated “Pastoral” by the composer himself, includes a narrative program in which he brings to life just such an excursion out of Vienna. With acclaimed musicologist Daniel Freeman, Ph.D., you will take a journey through these musical depictions of time spent in the countryside, including the sounds of the birds who gather there and the calm after the storm, all of which Beethoven used as an outlet to express his belief in the triumph of good over evil and his inextinguishable optimism over the future of mankind.
