Or how about a truly insiders tour of the buildings and sites where the repairs are made and the testing undertaken? Perhaps one of our favorite chefs will take the “Arb in a Box” challenge and prepare an unforgettable dish from the contents in the garden produce box. Opening of The Sculpture Garden. Excitement has been building since autumn of 2012 when the area around Highpoint when footings and platforms were first put into place, followed by the installation of nearly two dozen world-class sculptures. Come to celebrate the official opening of The Sculpture Garden in June of 2013. Learn about the international contemporary artists who created this diverse and fascinating collection brought to the Arboretum through the generosity of Arthur and Ingrid Harrison. Peter Juhl’s (www.temporarysculpture.com/) magical and exquisite balanced stone sculptures dazzled Arboretum visitors last year. He’s back and ready to teach you how to balance three or more rocks in seemingly impossible fashion without the aid of bolts, duct tape, or glue! You will revel in Peter’s story of how he became a widely acclaimed rock-balancing artist, and learn a little about physics in the process. He will demonstrate the various styles and techniques, and then guide you through the steps to create your own balanced rock sculpture. You’ll never look at stones in the same way again. (Rocks included. Some provided by Laurentian Monument, Granite and Stone.)

MAKE AND TAKE: PEONIES AND BLOOMING BRANCHES--DESIGN AN EARLY SUMMER SPLENDOR FLORAL ARRANGEMENT (100-05-11-13) Saturday, May 11, 9:30 a.m.-Noon $40 member/$55 non-member, All Levels, Hands-On / Demo, Limit 32, Learning Center Learn the basics of arranging in the open, Dutch floral style of Constance Spry, a floral pioneering master from the 1930’s. Using seasonal Arboretum and Minnesota-grown botanicals including peonies and blooming branches, emphasis will be placed on color blending techniques and using a variety of textures and scent to create complex gestural arrangements. Leave with new floral preparation practices, concepts of layering and form, and handy tips on how to create your own masterpieces at home. The class will be taught by a local, industry recognized floral artist, Ashley Fox (www.ashleyfoxdesigns.com). You’ll receive everything you need in this “make and take” class including a vase with your own floral design to take home.

Mary Bigelow is an accomplished Arboretum landscaper and curator of the Japanese garden, and will reveal to you some of the highlights of other world-acclaimed Japanese gardens. A short walk to the Arboretum’s Japanese Garden will bring your new knowledge into a fresh perspective and you will realize that even in the last days of winter, this garden has much to offer.

Whether you have a postage-stamp sized urban lot or spacious farmyard, you can grow an abundance of your own food. Learn about some of the best choices for your vegetable garden from lifetime gardener and Arboretum Director of Education Tim Kenny. For a varietal to become one of his favorites it must be easy to grow, harvest, and prepare in the kitchen. Selections must be relatively insect and disease free and promise fabulous flavor. By the end of the class, you’ll have a list of favorites, know where to purchase them, how to grow them for your unique space, and have easy-to-make recipes featuring the selections. Class offers plenty of photographs, recollections, opinions, and seed catalog references.

He will bring to you the magic and wonders of our world as he has captured it with his Nikon camera—whether from the deck of a ship or a penguin colony. Linder is acclaimed in his ability to bring clear and moving information to the public about science, to inspire the next generation of researchers, and to communicate the need to protect wild places. Trained as an oceanographer, Linder has documented 32 scientific expeditions and his photographs have been featured extensively from the Field Museum to the Smithsonian, and in numerous publications, including his own book “Science on Ice” (University of Chicago Press, 2011). We also cover the important basics of disease and mite management and control, emphasizing a reduction in chemical use within bee hives.

By special arrangement, you’ll need to arrive before the gates open to the public for this special birding experience. Arboretum naturalist Matt Schuth will lead you on this new Arboretum Exploration as the bird migration hits its peak. We have seen up to 50 species on this walk, and at least 20 warblers species have been seen at the Arboretum. Matt will talk about bird history and lore as two expert volunteers help you look and listen for birds. Make certain you bring binoculars and meet Matt in the Ordway Parking lot.
