A Message From the Director...
Nearby, intertwined with the early history of the Arboretum, is the historic Berens Cabin, located near the start of Three-Mile Drive. The cabin was known as ‘the ranch’ to Mary Berens, her two sisters, brother and parents, a family summer escape from their home in Excelsior. In 1958, the Berens family sold the property to what would become the Arboretum. More than 40 years later, Mary and her sister Lola contributed to a fund established by the Arboretum Auxiliary for renovation of the cabin (the Men’s and Women’s Garden Club of Minneapolis and other donors also contributed). Mary’s estate created an endowment for the cabin and recently, her estate (she died in 2007) distributed final funds for maintenance. From afar, a Minnesota pine tree and two magnolia trees were planted in honor of the Arboretum at the University of Tver botanic garden, located north of Moscow, Russia. As a member of the Botanic Gardens Conservation International, the Arboretum has assisted Tver botanic garden through shared horticultural research, conservation practices and community outreach. May the beauty and wonder of the Arboretum touch your family this holiday.

Arboretum Oak in Winter Photo by Chris Hall
The Mighty Oak Matt Schuth Naturalist The silence of a woodland trail in winter is often broken by the lonesome stirring of red oak leaves tenaciously clinging to their branches. Though the leaves have lost their green hues of summer and have turned a faded brown, they hang on in a futile effort to defy old age and the bone-chilling gales of Father Frost. Unlike most tree leaves, red oak leaves lack an abscission layer (meaning “to cut from” in Latin) of cells which separates and releases the leaf stem from the branch. Red oak leaves are sharp-pointed, distinguishing them from round lobed white oak leaves. Acorns of red oaks mature in two years while white oak acorns mature in one year. Red oak acorns have a higher tannin content and are more bitter than white oaks, and need to be buried in the fall to effectively sprout in the spring. Gray squirrels tend to bury red oak acorns and eat white oak acorns, and along with blue jays, play a key role in the propagation and spreading of oak forests. Only red oaks are susceptible to oak wilt.
Photographing in Winter Light Photo by Gayle Fleming
A few oak facts: About half of the hardwood lumber produced in the U.S. is from oaks. Leonardo DaVinci's drawings were done in ink extracted from oak galls. Johann Sebastian Bach wrote his music with oak ink and the founding fathers used oak ink to draft the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. And did you know, in English history, commoners were taxed based on how many pigs their acorn crop could feed? The Arboretum is a wonderful place to enjoy the sounds of falling acorns and rustling leaves as the seasons pass. Read more: “Oak” – how the oak tree has played an important role in human history. Peter Young, $27, and “Oak” – one artist’s interpretation of the same 250-yearold oak tree with 50 paintings completed in a three-year time-frame. Stephen Taylor, $29.95 – both available in the Gift Store (952-443-1439).

Joe Tashjian as a Child
Marla Spivak
Tashjian Bee Center at the Arboretum Alice Tashjian grew up in her father’s garden in upstate New York, with wonderful memories of watching the gentle bees dance as they pollinated flowers. Years later, when she and her husband Harry moved their family to Minnesota, she vowed to raise her own children in a backyard filled with flowers. Son Joe Tashjian remembers tending his mother’s three formal gardens, a rock garden and one with wildflowers, attracting hummingbirds, cardinals and insects, especially honeybees. Years later, when the Tashjians learned of the crisis facing honeybees, their passion for gardens blossomed into a generous gift to the Arboretum to establish an outreach center about bees. Alice became concerned after hearing about the crisis while attending an Arboretum workshop facilitated by U of M honeybee expert Marla Spivak. Professional beekeepers across the country are worried about the mysterious demise of entire colonies of bees. Why they are disappearing is still being investigated, but one fact is certain: a threat to honeybees is a threat to fully one-third of the world’s food supply.
After Harry passed away, Alice and Joe decided to honor his memory with a transformative ($2 million) gift to establish the Tashjian Bee Center at the Arboretum. Joe, now in his second year as a member of the Arboretum Foundation’s board of trustees, states. “We hope the Center will raise awareness and support of Marla’s research. Dad would have loved it.” “What an important role the bee center will play in telling the story of bees and their place in nature,” said Arboretum Director Dr. Ed Schneider. “Its location near the iconic Red Barn will make that area accessible to visitors. The Tashjians’ generous support is a marvelous expression of their love of gardens and learning.” The bee center opening is planned for 2015. Alice added. “We want future generations to understand the importance of bees, and find ways to protect them. We want to make a difference.” Except from Legacy magazine article by Mary Winstead, University of Minnesota Foundation.

Conifer with Snow Photo by Vasic, Dreamstime.com
Arboretum Dwarf Conifers
The Seventh in a Continuing Series on Tree and Shrub Collections at the Arboretum Jeffrey Louis Johnson Woody Plants Specialist Few spots in the Arboretum are as beautiful year round as the northwoods setting of waterfalls surrounded by conifers that make-up the Dwarf Conifer Collection. It is spectacular in variety of colors, textures, shapes, sizes; weeping, tightly pyramidal, mounded and spreading. Conifers are cone-bearing seed plants. In fact, conifer literally means ‘cone bearing.’ With few exceptions, conifers are evergreen in our climate. Those exceptions are Larch, Dawn Redwood and Bald Cypress. “Dwarf” is a relative term. Most conifers naturally grow to enormous mature specimens. That may be fine for a place like the Arboretum, but many homeowners desire unusual and small statured plants. Therefore, horticulturists select mutations (“sports”) and propagate them vegetatively (clone). These are grafted onto a compatible rootstock. The cultivars are then grown into specimens that are smaller and more manageable for smaller spaces.
Wreath-Making
Some visitor favorites at the Arboretum are Tsuga canadensis ‘Moon Frost’- Hemlock – a soft needled evergreen with flat needles and light green to almost white new growth during the summer. Larix laricina ‘Deborah Waxman’- Larch is an 8' deciduous conifer (loses its needles in winter), very similar to its full-size cousin. Picea omorika ‘Pendula Bruns’- Serbian Spruce, is a twisting, narrow-growing specimen right out of a popular children’s book. There are many other Dwarf Conifers in the collection that may tickle your fancy. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Explore the Dwarf Conifers Collection and the large waterfalls, top and bottom, for respite, learning, and temptation. Read more: “Conifers of the World” – comprehensive book describes all true conifers, including 545 species of trees and shrubs. James E Eckenwalder, $59.95 – available in the Gift Store (952-443-1439).
Create your own holiday wreath Dramatic honeysuckle vine, aromatic cedar, dark feather-leaf myrtle, and tiny spruce cones are the inspiration behind the new “Make a Holiday Wreath” workshop led by acclaimed floral design artist Ashley Fox (www.ashleyfoxdesigns.com). This make-and-take class includes everything you will need to create a stunningly unique wreath that is guaranteed to put you in the holiday spirit. Perfect for a gift (with a florist value of $100) or to decorate your door, you’ll also learn design principles and shortcuts that you can use at home to create additional welcoming wonders for your holiday season. Make a Holiday Wreath, Saturday, December 14, 9:30 a.m.-noon. Fee $68 member/$84 non-member, includes Arboretum admission. To register: www.arboretum.umn.edu/artsclasses.aspx
