CENTER STREET REAL ESTATE FIRMS CELEBRATE BIG CHANGES

Rachel Moody joins forces with Berkshire Hathaway, while Byrd & Company moves to new street-level offices Written by Sharon Sullivan | Photos by Murice D. Miller “It was an interesting time; the market was collapsing, everything was changing, loans were changing. The economic downtown was a difficult time,” she says, recalling the timing of the opening. “Since then, the market has been strong. I’ve enjoyed being a principal broker and being owner of a brokerage.” However, now she’s ready to take the next step, she says, by partnering with a company named by Fortune Magazine as one of the five most admired companies in the world for the seventh consecutive year. Moody will continue working as an associate broker to allow time to concentrate on what she says she enjoys most about the business — working with clients for the good of the community. Partnering with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Utah Properties will also allow Moody to spend more time with her daughter before she heads off to college next year.

REAL ESTATE COMPANY OF MOAB’S MOODY FINALIZES SALE; WILL STILL LEAD SALES TEAM

N

ew things are happening for two of Moab’s top real estate firms – Byrd & Company is moving to a new building, and Real Estate Company of Moab is partnering with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Utah Properties. Look for grand openings at both these businesses later this summer or fall. Real Estate Company of Moab founder Rachel Moody started out as a property manager in 2003, while juggling an infant on her hip, she says. A year later she decided to obtain her license and became a sales agent at Moab Realty — where she worked until 2008. She then opened her own business — Real Estate Company of Moab, where she was principal broker for nearly a dozen years.

Moody began seeking partnerships last year in the real estate industry to advance her technology, service and exposure, she says. “I interviewed a multitude of players in the industry. I found BHHSUP — we had the same values, mind-set in business.” Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Utah Properties is an independent, family-owned business, says Moody. It’s been a brokerage since 1976, with several brokers, agents and managers that have been with the company for 30- and 40-plus years, she notes. “I’m excited to be a part of this organization. They wanted to partner with me and my team,” which includes Nikole Andersen, Lynda Diem, Angela Houghton, Jessiqua Zufelt, Kim Kirks, and Reina Every. With the new title, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Utah Properties, the company will continue to be located at 50 E. Center St., although it’s expanding its space. Office hours are typically Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Someone is also always available by appointment, Moody says. The company can be reached at: 435-2608240 or 435-259-0150, moabreco.com, or bhhsutah.com. New to Moody’s team is associate broker Nikole Andersen who transferred from the Salt Lake City BHHSUP office to be the office manager in Moab. “I’d talked to Berkshire over the years about being here in Moab — I wanted to be here fulltime,” says Andersen. “(Management) asked me if I’d be an office manager/associate broker in Moab. It was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. We’d recently become empty nesters.” Andersen and her husband moved to Moab, March 1. “Coming to Moab was easy for us,” Andersen says. “I first came when I was age 8, for Girl Scout camp. I’ve been coming back ever since. I still have photos from that very first time.” Andersen has sold real estate since 2001, when she decided to team up with her sister-in-law who was an agent. “I found it interesting,” Andersen says. “I have a passion for helping people find homes; First-time homebuyers are my favorite to work with. I love what I do.” A grand opening and block party is planned for the fall. Stay tuned!

FAST-GROWING BYRD & CO. MOVES TO QUIET, GROUND-FLOOR SPACE

A

fter its busiest month ever, Byrd & Company moved into a new building February 1, and hit the ground running, says owner and principal broker Becky Wells. The company closed on 30 transactions in January, which was unusual for that time of year, she says. “That means people were (property) shopping during the holidays, which is not typical.” She attributes January’s high sales to slightly lower interest rates and a good economy. The company moved to the new building at 59 E. Center St., to accommodate the company’s growth in business. Whether you are home shopping or not, you’ll want to stop by the Byrd office at some point, after Wells finishes installing an exhibit of historic photos taken by her grandfather Dennis Byrd. Byrd was a Moab pilot, and, like his grand-daughter, formed his own real estate company called Byrd Agency. He also founded an airport in Moab — Byrd Aviation – near Ken’s Lake, south of town. “The old airstrip is still there,” says Wells. In college, Byrd roomed with Moab legend Charlie Steen, who discovered uranium in the area, and ended up developing much of the town. After serving in World War II, Byrd returned to Texas, where Steen convinced him to come to Moab to join his old college buddy in the uranium industry. Byrd flew supplies to miners out in the field, and also staked a few uranium mining claims himself. Byrd would also fly guests into town to attend Steen’s notorious, large parties, says Wells — at his

home, the “Mi Vida House,” which is currently leased by his children to the Sunset Grill restaurant. “It’s an old, cool, mid-century, 50s house,” says Wells. “He took tons of pictures,” in those days — of old mines, Main Street, parades, Moab in its infancy. “It was a whole other town then,” Wells says. “There were lots of big orchards. I’m working on making a gallery wall in my office. It will be neat for people to come look at them. I want to get it done before the open house. I have boxes and boxes of old Moab photos.” The Wells family typically screen the old slides during family holiday gatherings. Once she’s completed converting slides to photographs Wells will display them at the

Byrd & Company office. “I think the public will enjoy looking at it. I’m excited to share it. We’ll have an open house at some point in the future,” she says. The real estate profession skipped a generation with Wells’ father, who, instead became a farmer. Wells acquired her license in 2008, after her parents decided to develop a small portion of their farm into residential property on the north side of town. She became a realtor to help them with that process, she says. In 2015, she opened her own brokerage. “We’ve been really busy,” she says. “We have good inventory and there are more developments in the works, more products coming on line. Our website has everything for sale in Moab. You can sign up for free and receive new listings that come up on the market.” In 2015, she started with three real estate agents, and now there are seven. When a person wants to sell or buy a property, Wells recommends interviewing different realtors, read reviews online, or, seek personal word-of-mouth recommendations. Agents at Byrd & Company also include Lenore Beeson, Kali Bisco, Heidi Blake, Lexie Dalton, Chelsea Hagerman, Renerah Merett, Susan Shrewsbury, and Curtis Wells. “You can be as busy as you want to be,” she said, depending on how hard you want to work. Byrd & Company’s new building is now on the ground floor, with three additional offices and a larger reception area. Watch for an announcement later this year for its grand opening, too. Byrd & Company can be reached at: moabbyrdco.com or by calling 435.355.0576. n

Getting us through Moab’s essential workers, and others, make the difference during a crisis

T

he coronavirus has touched every part of the world, including rural and remote “get-aways” like Moab. While public health measures have slowed business, putting some people out of work and confining others to home offices, a selection of critical and essential workers are still reporting to work in person due to the nature of their jobs. Without the men and women who perform services every day — in waste management, food service, healthcare, and more — our community would be lost. Meet a few of the brave and dedicated Moab workers, and volunteers, who are serving their neighbors during uncertain times. FOOD AND BASIC SUPPLIES Editor’s note: This article reflects local conditions as of late-April. Debbie Maxwell has worked at the City Market grocery store for two years. She’s the General Merchandise Assistant Manager — she usually deals with the non-edible items found in the store, like the pharmacy and make-up aisles. “Thankfully I’ve still been able to work, unlike a lot of people,” Maxwell says. Maxwell has been working long hours at the store during the crisis. She’s glad for the work, and she says she isn’t too worried about the virus. “I feel pretty safe about keeping the distance. A lot of the people that come into the store wear masks and gloves. I’m being protected that way. I’m not going to panic,”she says. “I feel I’m pretty healthy,

26

that I could maybe fight off whatever comes along.” She maintains daily contact via group text with family members who live throughout Utah. in particular, she makes sure to regularly call her 95 year-old mother, who lives in Price. “I call her every night just to touch base,” Maxwell says, “even if it’s just to say, ‘how was the weather up there?’” Maxwell says she feels very supported at City Market. She praised the store manager, Brendon Cameron, for his leadership. “He takes care of his employees,” she says. Maxwell says Cameron has several times bought lunch for his staff, both to show appreciation for them and to support local restaurants that have lost business. Maxwell also appreciates goodwill from customers. Early on in the crisis, she says people would complain to staff about empty toilet paper shelves.

“Now, they say, ‘thank you for being here,’” says Maxwell. “That helps.” The store’s Grocery Manager Jenn Garrard has worked at City Market since December of 2018. Working through the pandemic, she’s observed not only store policies evolving, but also the way customers behave. “It’s almost like a grieving process,” Garrard says of the emotions she’s noticed among shoppers. “You go through the anger and the fear, and then the sadness and then the regret — and then angry again.” She is empathetic, acknowledging that the situation has made many people’s lives more difficult. “We’re lucky that we still are holding our jobs and working, but we also have to put ourselves in their shoes and imagine what these people feel like, our friends and neighbors and community that are not working right now and aren’t getting paychecks,” she says. Garrard has tried to comfort people who come in to the store with an obvious burden of fear or anxiety. “When this first happened, it felt like all of a sudden, us little people that just work in a grocery store, now we’ve become the counselor and the therapist for the customers,” she says, half-joking. From working in a field that many shoppers usually don’t think much about, grocery store employees are now heralded as being on the front-line in the crisis. She jokes that grocery staff should wear superhero capes emblazoned with “CM” for City Market. Despite the tension in the air, Garrard says most customers are considerate and kind. Garrard says she tries to “just go with the flow” and not get too stressed. Sometimes she does feel anxious, though. She says she has rituals to stay balanced and calm. “I go home and listen to music, sage my house and drink my tea. I play in my garden. Anything that makes me happy, so I can come back the next day and be what they need me to be here,” she says. As far as store operations, Garrard says there are fewer shoppers than there would normally

be this time of year, but it feels quite busy to the staff because they have to keep up with increased shopping from locals. “When this first happened, our shelves, everybody’s shelves, were getting wiped clean,” Garrard recalls. “It’s starting to get a little bit better now.” The store has hired around 30 new staff members to help with increased demand, particularly with online shopping orders, which have jumped from an average of fewer than 40 per day to sometimes nearly 70 per day. Three of those staff are Garrard’s family members: two of her three children and her daughter-in-law. She says she has encouraged her kids to take note of how people respond to times of crisis like this. “I said to them, during times like these, you see the true colors of people,” she says. Likewise, Garrard heard someone say we should watch how companies treat their employees during challenging times. “I can say that ours has treated us very well,” Garrard says of City Market. “So I’m very lucky to be where I’m at.”

rick says of his crew of trash collection workers. “We’re required.” Kirkpatrick says that trash collectors wear personal protective equipment like gloves and dust masks or bandanas over their faces even under normal circumstances, so that aspect has not changed much as they go about their jobs. “With our guys, it’s kind of a tough, dirty job anyway, for them its business as usual,” says Kirkpatrick. “They’re taking the precautions, but they’re all actually happy to be working.” The extra precautions include staggering shifts so that only a few at a time of the twenty local employees are at the station getting ready to start their routes, and disinfecting trucks and equipment much more frequently. In terms of business, Kirkpatrick says overall it has slowed. “Naturally, the commercial sector has suffered the most with the closure of the restaurants and hotels,” he says, creating a “pretty dramatic drop off in workload for us.” Conversely, he says that residential waste has increased. “Everybody’s staying at home doing yardwork and projects. They’re making good use of their time,” he says. That increase in residential waste doesn’t make up for the slow-down in commercial pick-up, however. Monument Waste employees are working reduced hours, but Kirkpatrick hasn’t laid anyone off.

SANITATION SERVICES Dan Kirkpatrick is the owner of Monument Waste, the company that handles garbage disposal for most residents and businesses in the Moab area. “We’re critical, not only essential,” Kirkpat-

EMERGENCY SERVICES Emergency medical professionals can’t work remotely or take time off from the job. Their skills and services are critical. Emergency Medical Technician Maggie Nielsen has been with the Grand County Emergency Medical Services team for just under a year. She described some of the changes around the EMS station since the threat of the coronavirus became a real presence in Moab. “Things are much slower than I imagine they would be otherwise,” she says of the call load right now. One reason is that Moab is essentially closed to tourism right now, during a season when visitors would normally be flocking to town to enjoy outdoor activities like mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, and driving 4X4 vehicles. Of course, all those beloved activities carry a level of risk, and even local outdoor enthusiasts are taking that into consideration. Nielsen said

Maggie Nielsen, Grand County EMS

that’s another reason for fewer EMS calls. “I think people are actually taking things seriously and trying not to do things that would risk their health,” she says. “They’re taming their activities.” Nielsen enjoys extreme outdoor sports herself and has had to moderate her activities to reduce risk of injury or accident. She said that 100 people might be involved in a rescue operation for a single person, and right now, the community is trying to conserve resources to handle a possible surge in COVID-19 infections. “I would feel really irresponsible,” she says, if she had to call for help because of an unnecessary risk. “I don’t always need to be outside,” she adds, saying that in addition to mellowing out her active pursuits, she’s been devoting more time to activities like reading and making art.

At the EMS station, the crew has developed protocols to detect and prevent coronavirus infections. Each time an employee checks in for a shift, they have their temperature taken and are interviewed about their symptoms and contacts with possibly infected individuals. Nielsen, like many, suffers from allergies, and right now has to report a runny nose and frequent sneezing when she shows up for work. She wears a mask during any close contact with patients on calls, to reduce the risk of spreading germs. While at the station waiting for a call, EMS workers pull the ambulances out of their bays and sit in camp chairs outside, at least six feet apart. They are careful not to gather in groups, and, like everyone else, are disinfecting surfaces and washing their hands more frequently. While responding to an emergency, it can be more difficult to maintain distance, but they still try. Gloves are worn on all calls, and if there is suspicion that a patient may be infected with the coronavirus, a full protective set-up including gloves, a gown, and an N95 mask will be used by any EMS personnel in contact with the patient. “It feels a little weird, but it also feels like the people who work at EMS are taking it in stride,” Nielsen says of the atmosphere at work. She has noticed that the restrictions and uncertainty are beginning to wear on her acquaintances outside EMS. “I think people are starting to maybe really struggle with what’s going on and the sense of isolation we’re dealing with,” she says. “People are a little down.”

Bottom middle: [Photo courtesy Moab Regional Hospital]

“When this passes, hopefully sooner than later, we still need to have people working,” he says. So far, there has not been a significant sense of anxiety among the Monument Waste crew. Kirkpatrick says the biggest change in the atmosphere is the requirement for social distancing. “They’re a tight knit group, they work together, they play together,” he says of his employees. However, at the moment, they have to refrain from gathering both at work and outside of work. “You can’t run out to the lake and hang out with six or eight people,” Kirkpatrick laments. “You kind of have to go out and do a solitary thing.”

As a team, one thing Grand County EMS is doing to keep the pandemic in perspective is to continue training on skills and knowledge outside of coronavirus protocols. Recently, the crew did a training on how to deal with pediatric patients. Nielsen says keeping other aspects of the job in mind is important, and refreshing. “It was nice to kind of bring it back and train on things that aren’t related to coronavirus,” she says.

A COMMUNITY SAFETY NET Some people are finding that their main business has slowed, but they are keeping busy and involved by volunteering their time and creativity toward protecting their neighbors. Dave Bierschied is the owner of Moab Realty. Real estate deals that were underway before the dramatic public health restrictions went into effect are still in process, Bierschied said, but his company is not brokering many new deals right now. However, Bierschied has stepped up to lead community volunteer efforts. He saw the need for this role early on in the crisis. At first, Bierschied thought community leaders might be over-reacting to the threat of the pandemic. After attending a public meeting and talking with community leaders he knows and trusts, he decided he needed to learn more. “I went out and got as educated as I could. It didn’t take me one day to believe that it was real,” he says of the threat posed by the coronavirus. As concerns about the virus heightened, many community members expressed a desire to contribute, and while what may be needed is constantly changing, Bierschied has been helping to get

Dave Bierschied, Rotary Club

a system organized. “We’ve got people in place and ready and willing to help those in need,” he says. One of the first things his volunteers are doing is offering to grocery shop for people at a high risk of severe infection, including elderly people and people with compromised immune systems. That protects those individuals from potential exposure to the virus, while also taking pressure off of grocery store workers who have had to drastically increase their capacity for filling online shopping orders. Bierschied’s staff has also set up a webpage, moabcovid.org, where people can find links to information, sign up to volunteer, or request help. Bierschied is a member of the Rotary Club of Utah, and he’s using his connections in that group to offer help and information to other Utah communities. That includes offering to build websites, similar to the one they made for Moab, for those communities. “It’s not a bake sale, this is the real deal,” says Bierschied, and he wants that message to be widespread and accessible. “I don’t believe there’s anybody that gets sick that’s going to go away unscathed.”

THE FRONT LINE Perhaps the most dramatically altered workplace, and the most crucial during this time, is the local hospital. Moab Regional Hospital has been preparing for weeks for COVID-19 cases. “Everyone at the hospital is working really, really hard to take care of our community,” says Darci Miller, who has worked at Moab Regional for 19 years. Miller is a Registered Nurse with a specialty in emergency medicine, and is also the Director of Clinical Support Services. That title encompasses risk management, quality assurance, emergency preparedness, employee health, infection control, education, and environmental services.

Darci Miller, Moab Regional Hospital

“And I still work in the emergency department occasionally,” she adds. Miller says that in her nearly two decades at Moab Regional, she can’t remember a time like the current one. “Our world has changed dramatically,” she says. Protocols on accepting patients, providing care, managing the facility, and using personal protective equipment have all been adapted to limit the potential for spreading the virus. The hospital has set up a tent outside the emergency room where patients can be assessed for COVID-19 symptoms before entering the building. There used to be no restrictions on visitors; now, visitation is not permitted except in a few circumstances. People in need of services are asked to call before coming

into the building. Nurses are equipped with masks and goggles. Miller says the atmosphere at the hospital has changed from a bustling center where medical professionals are active and assured, to one where the staff are anxious and in a waiting stance, anticipating potential infections. Still, dedicated staff continue providing services while staying prepared. The hospital is still accepting patients for all kinds of care. Routine doctor visits are being conducted through telehealth. “[In a way,] it’s a great time for this to happen because we have all this great technology and innovation and we can still take care of our patients,” Miller points out. “We want people to still come to us,” she says, urging especially those with severe medical symptoms or needs not to hesitate in getting care from the hospital. Miller says she doesn’t really have a moment to relax right now—when she’s not working, she’s keeping up with the latest news and research, and friends and family can’t refrain from asking for her professional insights on the crisis. Once the threat passes, Miller says she looks forward to taking a week off from technology. “I’d like to just go somewhere where I’m not attached to my phone, and just take a real break from it,” she says, noting that many other hospital staff probably share the same wish. In the meantime, she has this assurance for Moab area residents: “It has not been easy for any one of us…for the whole community. It’s just not an easy time, but I’m hoping there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.” n

He says being a contact point for volunteers and people in need is not so different from his job as a realtor. People call at all times of the day to ask questions and express interest in buying or selling properties. In the same way, volunteers are calling him throughout the day asking how they can serve. “There are hundreds that want to be helping,” he says. While waiting to see how the situation develops, Bierschied is mostly staying home, or sometimes going with his daughter while she practices horseback riding. He’s constantly in touch with the community and with the local COVID-19 task force, but he notes he has reduced his media consumption. “I have found that I’ve quit turning the news on 24/7, because it’s the same thing, different day,” he says.
