USU-MOAB MARKS A MILESTONE

New academic building unveiled to public, just in time for summer session
AHALF-CENTURY FROM NOW MOAB RESIDENTS WILL REMEMBER THE DAY THAT UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY UNVEILED ITS NEW MOAB CAMPUS AND ACADEMIC BUILDING TO THE PUBLIC. ON THAT DAY, APRIL 1, 2022, OFFICIALS BURIED A TIME CAPSULE TO BE UNCOVERED 50 YEARS HENCE, TO GIVE RESIDENTS A GLIMPSE OF WHAT ELSE WAS GOING ON DURING THIS ERA.
Time capsule contributions came from community members, including schoolchildren who made posters for the event. A school administrator wrote about his pride meeting the challenges of educating children during a pandemic.
Steve Hawks, a former administrator who currently teaches at the college, spoke about his ancestors who resided in Moab during a time when there was only a one-room schoolhouse that doubled as a church. And how, 150 years later, the town has a college campus with graduate degree programs. People will see what progress has been made during the next 50 years when they open the time capsule, he told the nearly 250 people attending the event.
“We got a lot of (thoughtful) submissions,” says Lianna Etchberger, USU-Moab associate vice-president. “During the last two years there
has been a pandemic, murders, a big fire, rapid growth – the 2072 community will see what was going on.”
Various community leaders spoke during the ribbon-cutting ceremony, including donor Peter Lawson and former Moab Mayor Dave Sakrison, who Etchberger says helped obtain approval to build a road – Aggie Boulevard – to the new 40-acre campus, located three miles south of downtown off Mill Creek Drive and U.S. Highway 191.
The public was invited to tour the new state-of-the-art academic building. Students and faculty members were present to answer questions. During the ceremony, Etchberger named Jen Evers, a clinical associate professor of social work, as “Teacher of the Year.”
Construction on the energy-efficient classroom and administration building began in the fall of 2020 and was completed in late March of 2022 – just in time for the new summer session that begins May 9. The project experienced some delays due to the pandemic, including supply chain issues, and labor shortages.
“We were lucky,” Etchberger says. “The construction company was great. Because of the standards we wanted to keep, we had to wait on some things. But they did a great job keeping things rolling.” Among the teaching facilities that were successfully added during the pandemic were USU’s welding and construction shops.
Becky Hinchcliff, a 31-year old enrolled in a master’s program in social work, spoke about what it’s like being a grad student in Moab. “ They took our lives (living and working in Moab) into account when designing the programs and the building,” she says, adding that designers considered Moab’s unique landscape and used interior colors and materials to bring the outdoors inside. Plus, “they’ve devoted an entire wing to 4-H and Extension. 4-H is a way to connect community members to campus. That’s a huge asset this building brings.”
The academic building uses no fossil fuels –all the electricity consumed on campus is produced by a photovoltaic array on top of a parking canopy shade structure, with any excess energy going into the electrical grid system.
Architects also took advantage of the earth’s constant below-ground temperature of
around 55 degrees Fahrenheit to heat and cool the 2,000 square-feet building. Geothermal technology uses a system of wells and pumps that can extract heat or expel it back through the earth depending on the season. Wall and roof insulation will help the building maintain its internal temperature and reduce its overall energy use. And, windows allow for natural lighting and direct sunlight for warmer indoor temperatures during the winter.
The project’s principal architect Kyle Taft said that the university requested a “highly sustainable and high-performance” academic building. Utah State University requires all new buildings be Silver LEED-certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).
“The USU campus administration asked us to create a facility that does not rely on any fossil fuels,” Taft says. “There’s no natural gas, or other carbon-based fuels associated with this facility.”
Landscaping on campus was also designed to be sustainable. Drought-tolerant native plants were installed to blend into Utah’s natural landscape. Drainage water is captured to irrigate flowers and shrubs. A demonstration garden on the building’s southwest side will use permaculture principles and include edible plants to benefit both wildlife and pollinators, said MNTN landscape architect Dan Smith.
The regional campus offers more than 60 different degree programs and certificates. Some programs are offered online via interactive video broadcast systems. Additionally, there are courses offered in-person. Bachelor’s, master’s, and associate degrees are available at the new campus. Students can now earn a degree without leaving Moab.
Nursing is USU-Moab’s largest degree program, where all classes are taught in-person to provide hands-on instruction. Moab Regional Hospital made a sizable donation to the new academic building – it hopes new graduates will join its workforce.
The university looks at what the community needs and caters programs accordingly, says Hinchcliff. “As a social worker in the community, I can tell you there are (many) services and resources, but we don’t necessarily have the personnel,” Hinchcliff says. “USU has built programs to help with that,” including not only in nursing and social work, but also automotive work and welding.
Another popular degree program is recreation resource management, which works with the National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management.
Etchberger says people can engage with USU-Moab by donating to the Moab Community Scholarship Fund – which she said was inspired by a local man who did not attend college, but said he wanted his children to go. He gave Etchberger $5 to put toward the fund.
If donations reach $25,000 the fund will be considered an endowment and provide a scholarship fund forever, said Etchberger. “We’re aiming to raise $25,000 every year for five years,” she said. “It will be a legacy to remember this time. We’re here to educate people; it’s what elevates this community.”
After two years of uncertainty worldwide, Etchberger found the ribbon-cutting ceremony to be an emotional occasion. “There was finally something to celebrate; it was a happy, happy day.” n

Tiffany Butler, who’s lived in Moab for seven years, fulfilled a longtime desire to own a business when she opened Wanderlust in 2020. She and her three daughters, ages 9, 15 and 17, have all contributed to giving the store a new look and feel.
“It’s something we do all together—it’s kind of a bonding thing,” Butler says. She’s a labor and delivery nurse at Moab Regional Hospital, and the store is a fun side project for her to share with her kids.
Butler’s oldest daughter loves plants, which shows through in the decorative plants perched here and there under glass prism chandeliers. She also came up with the idea of the “Wander Garden,” a build-your-own houseplant bar, where customers can choose a pot, a small cactus, succulent or air-plant, and decorative elements.
Butler’s middle daughter loves animals, and suggests inventory for a corner of the store devoted to pets. There are tee shirts for dogs and treats for dogs and cats, and animal-themed clothes for people, including shirts whose sales benefit the Moab Humane Society.
The youngest daughter loves being active outside, and also loves sparkles. She helps select items for kids.

Butler’s daughters also work shifts at the cash register. She hopes that giving them substantial roles in the business will empower them to feel capable and independent as they grow up.
Along with the niches that reflect the personalities of the family, Wanderlust has a selection of chic clothing and jewelry and accessories made by local artists. One store employee crochets scarves and cowls, and sells them in the store; there are locally made earrings, soaps, and tee shirts.
“I really want to offer stuff to Moab locals that they need or would like,” says Butler, and she solicits input from customers on what they want to see in the store. In response to requests, she carries clothes and products like backpacks for kids, basic wardrobe items for adults, and extra large sizes. She also carries a hint of the bohemian vibe of the former store.
“I still kept a little bit of Rave’N Image,” Butler says. “I loved that store.”
Butler says that the store sees a lot of traffic as the tourist season picks up. A map on the wall invites customers to pin where they’re from, and there are pins from all over the world. But the clientele is always a mix of locals and visitors.
“We try to offer a variety, because Moab doesn’t have a ton,” Butler says.

East Ivy
350 SOUTH 400 EAST
East Ivy clothing boutique opened in June of 2021 and caters mostly to locals. The store carries trendy styles in clothing for kids, women and men; as well as a sprinkling of gifts, jewelry, hats, accessories, personal care products and home décor.
“Growing up here, there were no clothing options,” remembers Taylor Johnston, who was born and raised in Moab and owns the store with her partner Mike Johnston. “Most of my childhood, we commuted to Grand Junction for clothes.”
East Ivy has a modern look that’s both sleek, with clean lines and gray and white tones, and cozy, with a personal feel and lots of casual-chic ensembles on display. Taylor said keeping the prices low is a priority for her. Having grown up in Moab, she knows locals don’t have a huge amount of disposable income to spend on fashion.
“We get lots of comments like, ‘Wow, your prices are super-reasonable for a boutique,’” Taylor says. Graphic tee shirts, casual button-up shirts for men, felt hats, and kids’ jackets hang on mannequins or hangers, or are neatly stacked on display tables. Many items have a vintage or western vibe.
“We sell a lot of dresses,” says Taylor, adding, “Jeans are huge.” She does the purchasing and tagging, working mostly in the office. Mike or one of their two older kids usually run the storefront; they also hire locals, often students, to cover shifts. Taylor said her 17-year-old daugh-
ter is a great reference in determining what’s cool and deciding what to carry in the store.
Taylor was a hair stylist in Moab for 15 years and owned her own salon. Her life changed when her husband was killed in a work accident—after that, she didn’t feel up to interacting directly with customers all day. In brainstorming for a new venture, she remembered the scarcity of clothing options from her youth, and thought clothing retail made sense. Owning their own business allows Taylor and Mike autonomy and flexibility, so they can prioritize caring for their combined family of five kids, ranging in age from 7 to 17. The kids enjoy being part of the business, too. Those who are too young to work at the register sometimes model clothing for Facebook posts announcing the arrival of new inventory.
Taylor and Mike found a location for the store on 400 East. They continued working other jobs while they renovated the building, which needed a lot of work—it had been vacant for years before they purchased it. In the past, the property has housed the Moab Free Health Clinic, the WabiSabi Thrift Store, a coffee shop, and a ‘Magic, the Gathering’ card shop, as far as Taylor knows. She’s not sure what its original purpose was. A huge amount of interior, exterior, and landscaping work, which Taylor and Mike mostly did themselves, brought the property to life, and Taylor says they’ve been busy ever since they opened.
“Moab’s poppin’,” she says, and they’re on track to double their numbers from last year.
The first time April and Ryan Holder visited Moab was in March of 2021. They moved to town just a few months later and opened their clothing boutique, The Haberdasher, in November of that year.
“We’re spontaneous people,” explains April. They love to experience new places, and that’s reflected in their purchasing: much of the inventory in the spacious store is European brands.
“We love to travel, we love Europe, we love the styles in Europe,” April says, pointing out collections from companies in the UK and Spain. Mayoral, a Spain-based company, supplies soft, stretchy, durable clothing for toddlers with pastel colors and cute animals themes. April says the kids’ clothing is one of the best-selling categories—she thinks in part because there aren’t a lot of places to find kids’ clothes in town, and in part because parents and grandparents like to spoil their little ones.
April and Ryan were first drawn to the area for the mountain biking. For the previous two years they’d been living in Idaho on a large wooded property where April maintained a flower farm, selling her blooms to florists and wedding designers. Ryan works for a global call center company, a job that involves frequent travel all over the world.
The couple is from the Idaho Falls area, and their children and grandchildren live there; April enjoyed spending a lot of time with her grandkids, who are all under 4 years old. How-

ever, the property was over an hour away from the things they really liked to do, like snowboard and mountain bike. When they came to Moab, they didn’t specifically plan on starting a business, though the idea of owning a store had always been appealing; but when they arrived, they saw a niche.
“One thing we noticed when we moved here was that there were a lot of places to shop for tourism, or for specific activities, but not a lot of places to shop for kids, or for some footwear or a great pair of jeans,” April says. They found a location across from the City Market grocery store that was previously Moab Escape Rooms. They re-did the floor and stocked the space with some of their favorite clothing brands.
April says one of her favorite items in the store now is a loose-fitting, caramel-colored jumper with wide legs and long straps tied in a bow in the back.
“We were just in Paris, during fashion week,” she says, showing the wide pant legs of the jumper. “Everything’s wide in Europe right now.”
She pointed out a brand of footwear displayed on a shelf.
“What we love about Asportuguesas (shoes) is that they have a negative carbon footprint,” she says. They are made of natural materials like boiled wool, cotton, and cork.
So far, April says, the shop has done a steady business, with mostly local customers, as well as online shoppers ordering through
their website. This spring will be the shop’s first tourist season—April hopes that the proximity of the Canyon Pizza Co., GearHeads, and City Market will bring more traffic their way. Meanwhile, she’s glad to be offering an outlet for fashion-conscious locals, and she’s connecting with the community by having local residents model clothes for the store’s Facebook, Instagram, and website.
Moab Treasure
83 EAST CENTER STREET
Moab Treasure is a mix of souvenirs and clothing, catering to both locals and visitors. One nook of the shop carries Moab mementos like puzzles, mugs, keychains and stickers, and the rest of the shop carries clothes, accessories and jewelry.
The store is open every day, and owner Nutthakitta Boonbumrung runs it by herself, though her 4 year old daughter likes to help out and sometimes greets customers from behind the counter.
Boonbumrung came to Moab from Thailand in 2016 with a student exchange visa and worked at the Red Cliffs Lodge, and she decided she wanted to stay. She likes jewelry, and started making her own beaded earrings, which she sold through Facebook. That led to the idea to open the store. She was able to find a location close to downtown, and employees of the small business support center from the local Utah State University Extension helped her arrange the lease of the building.
Some of Boonbumrung’s own creations can be found in the store within a sparkling wall display of pretty, colorful earrings and other jewelry. One set is a string of tiny pink beads ending in a silver butterfly; another has shimmery blue feathers.
Boonbumrung opened the store in the spring of 2020, which turned out to be a difficult time—just when the pandemic shut everything down. Businesses closed and the usual crowds
of tourists didn’t arrive. Once restrictions eased, Boonbumrung opened up to locals.
“It’s good,” she says, “the community came to support us.” She makes sure she keeps the store appealing to Moab residents by regularly refreshing the inventory, ordering in small quantities of various products so there’s always a variety. She also caters to what locals say they want. People asked her to carry more dresses and shoes, so now there’s a wide selection of strappy sandals and summery dresses, along with tee shirts and sweatshirts. There’s also a selection of men’s clothing, with button-up shirts and shorts.
The price-point is another way Boonbumrung keeps locals coming back.
“We sell (items that are ) not too pricey,” she says, knowing many Moab locals can’t afford to shop for expensive clothes frequently. Moab Treasure is the perfect place to find an affordable “treat,” and Boonbumrung says some locals check in regularly to see what’s new. Local shoppers give her a reliably steady business, while tourists ebb and surge with the seasons.
She enjoys seeing tourists, who initially may come in looking for a souvenir that says “Moab” on it, but then they discover a new clothing item, too. Boonbumrung’s friendly smile seems to add to the shopping experience for many, like one recent reviewer online who said succinctly, “I like the vibe in this place.” n
